Bungalow Details Exterior

Bungalow Details Exterior

What defines an Arts & Crafts bungalow? What makes it different from other small, one or one-and-a-half story houses? Many say that it's hard to describe, but you know one when you see it. And knowing one when you see it is all about knowing how to spot the details. With Arts & Crafts homes, it is often the way the details are combined, and the philosophy they represent, that makes a house an authentic Arts and Crafts bungalow. It is not just knee braces in the gable, nor a river rock column, or a three part front window.
In their latest book, bungalow experts Jane Powell and Linda Svendsen identify the finer points and visual characteristics that make a bungalow a bungalow, and show how to incorporate these important details into your bungalow. The authors skillfully explain how to identify the details and the ways of blending them, and offer insight into the Arts & Crafts philosophy behind their use.
A sleeping porch, a pergola, an exposed rafter tail, an extensive use of wood, stone, and brick: none of these things by themselves characterize a bungalow. With Bungalow Details, however, anyone can become a bungalow expert, and be able to confidently "know a bungalow when they see one."
Jane Powell is the proprietor of House Dressing, a business dedicated to renovating and preserving old homes. She is a frequent lecturer and consultant, and is the author of Bungalow Kitchens and Bungalow Bathrooms.
Linda Svendsen, a graduate of Music and Art High School and Parsons School of Design in New York, has been a renowned photographer for more than thirty years. Her work is showcased in numerous magazines and books; she is the author of Bicycle: Around the World.

Beneath This Gruff Exterior

18th release to date from John Hiatt was recorded in just 8 days with guitarist Sonny Landreth, bassist Dave Ranson and drummer Kenneth Blevins. Digipak. New West. 2003.

Much to his credit, John Hiatt has never strayed very far from the bluesy garage rock roots of his Indiana childhood. That fact is raucously underscored here, a gritty collection that finds the veteran singer/songwriter co-crediting his longtime band, the Goners (guitarist Sonny Landreth, bassist Dave Ranson and Kenneth Blevins on drums) for the first time--and for good reason. While Hiatt's songwriting efforts are typically strong throughout, with gems like "Almost Fed Up With the Blues," "My Dog and Me," "My Baby Blue," and "The Most Unoriginal Sin" (originally recorded by Willie Nelson in ‘93) showcasing his tough wit and tender heart, this is decidedly a band effort from the rollicking first notes of "Uncommon Connection." Recorded live in the studio, Hiatt and the Goners evoke everything from chugging Sun Records' shuffles to swampy Delta blues, early Ry Cooder and the Band, all of it informed by the almost telepathic sense of interplay these musicians have developed over decades of touring. This is easily the most overtly rocking album of Hiatt's career, but one that hasn't sacrificed an ounce of soul for its joyous energy. --Jerry McCulley

My sink is wonderful! It's Blanco's metallic-gray Silgranit super-single. The faucet is Delta's Leland. I love the pull-down spray feature. I also have a stainless sink grid. The knobs and pulls are satin nickel from Newell-Rubbermaid's "Allison" line. Our floor is Daltile's "French Quarter" laid randomly by a very talented flooring installer named Michael. Michael works for his brother, Chris Jordan. I love my floor, and Michael did an excellent job installing it.

The dishwasher is also G.E., a Profile series with smart dispense, which measures the crud floating in the water and dispenses just enough detergent to get the dishes sparkling clean. Of course, our dog, Chloe, thinks that dishwashing is supposed to be her job. See more about that below.

Alrighty.. the tools for the job. Counter-clockwise from top-left:

1) A tub of thinset that the HomeDepot guy says is certified for glass tiles (I think also my tile vendor also says to use this kind. 6 months ago its packaging was yellow, the HD guys says.)

2) Notched trowel, 3/16"x 5/32" v-notches. Use this instead of the square notches. The former is for wall tiles, the latter for floors. The small notches is due to the small size of our tiles.

3) Spacers. I got the 1/16" spacers, the smallest from Home Depot.

4) Pointing Trowel, 5". It's useful in this job for digging into the tub to grab some thinset, and also to scrap against the notched trowel to clean things up.

Findland - Chapter 9

Findland - Chapter 9

Magic is real. It exists in the world and in everyone. However, like evolution, many otherwise reasonable people refuse to believe it. This is due the fact that there is so much misunderstanding of what magic means. A large degree of misunderstanding comes from the fact that there is so much fraud and misrepresentation of magic. Palm reading, tarot cards, zodiac signs, crystal balls, tasseography and all other forms of fortune telling are a frauds. The future can not be known, because if it was known, then it would change. Items that are to bring good luck or fertility or whatnot are frauds. Any curse is a fraud. The difficulty is that those who sell such nonsense are rarely aware that they are frauds, they believe their own nonsense more than anyone.
The other difficulty was that people usually turned to magic looking for easy solutions. Pick up some magic to bring you good fortune rather than be bothered by hard work. It is not uncommon for people to show an interest in legitimate magical practice only to quickly wander off to the more fraudulent types. The fakers might not offer any real results, but they offer quick results. To become a legitimate practicer of magic takes an enormous amount of hard work and study. To be exact, it takes 10,000 hours of study, which is a bit more than most people are willing to put in. As a further deterrent, magical skills are not gradually acquired, but rather all at once-- people achieve their first magical spell after 10,000 hours of study. (Also it helps if you're born with a caul.)
So if Hutch was hard to replace then O was near impossible to replace. O was responsible for infusing objects with unique magical properties (of course 'unique magic' is redundant, every magic is unique). Most of the things she created never left the TSC headquarters, some because they were either used for security or examination of evidence in the building, but sometimes because they were seen as too valuable to be released. Only a few top agents were allowed to ever take magically infused items, such as the leather bag Hutch had used, into the field. O herself never even left the TSC basement. Not that she wasn't allowed, she just didn't want to, which suited all parties involved. When Hutch walked into her basement lab she immediately ordered him to leave.
“Come now O is that anyway to treat your biggest fan?”
O rolled up a parchment she had been studying and stood. “I don't care what you are, just get out.”
“But I need your help with something.” Hutch stepped forward, undeterred.
O picked up a foot long iron rod. Hutch knew from experience that if O touched him with the end of the rod that he would get the sensation that his entire body was on fire. The feeling only lasted a second but it was enough to keep prying hands away from her works in progress. “The whole building wants my help with something. I don't have time to help people who don't return what they take.”
“What... the bag?”
“Yes 'the bag!' I spent a month working on that and I understand it worked, that it saved the whole mission. Then you didn't bring it back!”
Hutch was at a bit of a loss “But I didn't lose it, I handed it off to another agent. It's what the mission required.”
O came very close to prodding him at that point. “I don't care what the mission required. I gave the bag to you, you took responsibility for it, you agreed to return it. Now it's not here, I don't know who has it and I'll probably never see it again because once a department gets their hands on some magic they never want to return it.” She then pushed turned him around and pushed him towards the door. “Now get out.” If Hutch resisted she would have never been able to physically make him leave (She looked like a dwarf next to him. In height that is, she was much cutter than a dwarf.) but he knew that if he fought back he'd never get what he came for.
“I didn't come here to ask you for new toys. It's the album leaf, I used it.” O stopped pushing.
“You used it?” O asked. Hutch turned to face her.
“Yeah I did. You said that I ever needed to know where someone was going slip it on them then come to you. Well I slipped it on someone an hour ago and I need to know where he is now.”
O gave an exaggerated exhale then went to a set of small narrow drawers. She unlocked the seventh one down and took out a leaf that was identical to the one she had given Hutch five months prior. She told him to sit down, Hutch grabbed a stool and sat on it. “No” O corrected “On the floor.”
Hutch looked down at the floor. It wasn't clean, O maintained that earthen floors were best for her work (she never bothered to explain why). He didn't have time to waste. He sat down on the floor cross legged. “Now how does this w...” Before he could finish his sentence O took a knife and cut him across the hand.
“Ow!” Hutch cried in genuine pain “What was that about?”
O grabbed his recoiled wounded hand again. “You talk too

The Three Gifts of Earth Hour

The Three Gifts of Earth Hour

Earth Hour 2010 has passed by–has its message passed us by too? In this post, I express my personal experience of seeking to find the meaningfulness behind celebrating an occasion that I believe matters.

In the days following Earth Hour, news stories jostled between it having been the best Earth Hour yet, to claims of less lights off than previous Earth Hours (see, for example, Fewer lights off for Earth Hour). I saw a number of online discussions suggesting that people “waste their time” observing this occasion, and I was blown away when I learned that some people intended to turn on all of their lights to celebrate Edison Hour, thereby thumbing their nose at any initiative trying to raise awareness of our real and present energy and climate challenges! My disappointment deepened when I visited a regular forum, only to read uncivil language shouting at the “preachy people” to go and turn off their computer forever and to stop “sitting in the dark” when more practical things could be done.

It is a truism to say that the environment would benefit more from doing something practical like planting trees in the local reserve instead of turning off our lights for an hour. But that killjoy attitude totally misses the point of what this occasion represents: Earth Hour is an opportunity to learn from a purposeful interruption to our “energy-on-tap” lives. And ironically, did those wanting to celebrate an "Edison Hour" realize that Edison once said: "I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run our before we tackle that." Indeed, their very "rebelliousness" of switching on all the lights acknowledged that energy is something we all have a choice about, either to switch on, or to switch off. I do hope those who vetoed Earth Hour in favor of "practical things" are actually out there planting the trees, untying plastic bottle rings from birds’ necks and participating in community restoration projects...

The Three Gifts of Earth Hour

Although saddened at seeing this symbolic event maligned and resented, it hasn't swayed my conviction in its importance. I’d like to share with you my own experience of Earth Hour 2010, spent with a bright young person born this millennium. A much anticipated occasion in our household, we reminded one another in the lead-up to Earth Hour to set aside Saturday night’s hour: no TV, no radio, no computer, no lights! Things were busy as usual and as the hour approached, we hadn’t managed to “plan” anything specific, although there were plenty of suggestions. Dinner over, with 10 minutes left, I realized we didn't have any candle holders, so we had to fish make-do's out of the recycling bin. Two nice clean jars and a saucer later, we placed our candles on the table, lit them in readiness, took the phone off the hook, shut down computers, and checked that all the lights were off. My son advised that we were not allowed to use “anything that is powered smartly”.

At 8:30pm, we switched off the last light and excitedly rushed to the window to see if others were doing the same across our lovely hillside view. At first it seemed that other houses weren’t participating; a house across the way had its large TV images flickering constantly, another house had many lights on, and the hillside seemed its usual brightness. My son quickly nicknamed the lit-up houses “the Wild West” because, he told me, “they face West and aren’t turning off their lights!”. Then, as we waited patiently, we started to see lights turning off. Bit by bit, there was a distinctive change and my son became more excited as he saw people taking part. All of a sudden he cried: “Look! The lights are out in that house and they’ve turned off their big TV! They’re doing Earth Hour too!” Eager to see that others were also participating in Earth Hour, the anticipation of waiting while it took up to five minutes past the starting time paid off–many others were participating too! My son’s excitement was infectious, and I realized then that the sense of “solidarity” with my many neighbors sharing and acknowledging the point of the event was the first gift of participating in Earth Hour.

We sat at the table in front of the glowing candles. At this point, I realized that there was a full hour ahead of sitting there and wondered if this was going to work. Would he get bored with "just talk"? Would we feel tempted to go and do something with a light on? Should we go for a walk like we did for last Earth Hour? I decided to ask him what he wanted to do. He laughed and said we could do shadow tricks on the wall with the flashlight, adding that “This feels just like when we go camping, only at home! I love this!” Suddenly he proclaimed: “I want to read!” He took his flashlight and went and found his current favorite library book, The Comic Strip History of the World. When it was my turn, my flashlight alighted on the di

The skeleton is to do with the big Day of the Dead festivals on November 2nd.

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Dia de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated by many in Mexico and by some Mexican Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 2 in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. The Day of the Dead is a time of celebration when eating and partying are common. Due to occurring shortly after Halloween, the Day of the Dead is sometimes thought to be a similar holiday, although the two are celebrated differently.

Scholars trace the origins of the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl. In Brazil, Dia de Finados is a public holiday that many Brazilians celebrate by visiting cemeteries and churches. In Spain, there are festivals and parades, and, at the end of the day, people gather at cemeteries and pray for their dead loved ones. Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe, and similarly themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures.

The Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico can be traced back to the indigenous cultures. Rituals celebrating the deaths of ancestors have been observed by these civilizations perhaps for as long as 2,500–3,000 years. In the pre-Hispanic era, it was common to keep skulls as trophies and display them during the rituals to symbolize death and rebirth.

The festival that became the modern Day of the Dead fell in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, about the beginning of August, and was celebrated for an entire month. The festivities were dedicated to the god known as the "Lady of the Dead", corresponding to the modern Catrina.
In most regions of Mexico, November 1 honors children and infants, whereas deceased adults are honored on November 2. This is indicated by generally referring to November 1 mainly as Dia de los Inocentes ("Day of the Innocents") but also as Dia de los Angelitos ("Day of the Little Angels") and November 2 as Dia de los Muertos or Dia de los Difuntos ("Day of the Dead").

People go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars containing the favorite foods and beverages as well as photos and memorabilia of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so that the souls will hear the prayers and the comments of the living directed to them. Celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.

Plans for the day are made throughout the year, including gathering the goods to be offered to the dead. During the three-day period, families usually clean and decorate graves; most visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with ofrendas ("offerings"), which often include orange mexican marigolds (Tagetes erecta) called cempasuchitl (originally named cempoalxochitl, Nahuatl for "twenty flowers").

In modern Mexico, this name is sometimes replaced with the term Flor de Muerto ("Flower of the Dead"). These flowers are thought to attract souls of the dead to the offerings.

Toys are brought for dead children (los angelitos, or "the little angels"), and bottles of tequila, mezcal or pulque or jars of atole for adults. Families will also offer trinkets or the deceased's favorite candies on the grave. Ofrendas are also put in homes, usually with foods such as candied pumpkin, pan de muerto ("bread of the dead"), and sugar skulls and beverages such as atole. The ofrendas are left out in the homes as a welcoming gesture for the deceased. Some people believe the spirits of the dead eat the "spiritual essence" of the ofrendas food, so even though the celebrators eat the food after the festivities, they believe it lacks nutritional value. Pillows and blankets are left out so that the deceased can rest after their long journey. In some parts of Mexico, such as the towns of Mixquic, Patzcuaro and Janitzio, people spend all night beside the graves of their relatives. In many places, people have picnics at the grave site as well.
Some families build altars or small shrines in their homes; these usually have the Christian cross, statues or pictures of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pictures of deceased relatives and other persons, scores of candles and an ofrenda. Traditionally, families spend some time around the altar, praying and telling anecdotes about the deceased. In some locations, celebrants wear s

We woke up around 11 cause Colter kept texting. Apparently he was going to come get her soon. Which totally ruined our days plans but thats ok. So she showered n what not. Made strawberry whipped cream and finished the cupcakes. They are good but the pink part of the pink lemonaide is sort of lacking.. Theyll be better next time. We went and got Little Caesars pizza n crazy bread, yum. Ending up getting more Christmas lights. We pretty much just hung out all day cause we didnt know what was going on with Colter. We listened to music, watched movies, talked, walked to the store a few times, redid part of my christmas lights lol. Its wild how no matter how long either of us are away it falls right back like it was before just like that. It was between I wanna say 5 or 6 when she got picked up lol we totally didnt have to wait around for him! But he let me borrow Dantes Inferno. I cleaned the room up n started playing Dantes Inferno. It started out alright, its a lot like God of War.. but not near as good. He even kind of looks like Kratos lol but the block is different in them so its been throwing me off. I played til it pissed me off n then put a movie in til 9 rolled around n I went downstairs to watch 16 and Pregnant with Rachael, I was down there watching some Jail show til like 11. Then I came back up here, watched a little more of the movie and ate pizza til the gaming urge took over and I put Dantes Interno back in. I dont like it. The game play is just pissing me off. Everything is just accomplished stupidly. Its like a GOW rip off n I dont like it at all. I might give it another shot but Im pissed that it doesnt auto save, n that I get stuck behind things, n cant see what Im fucking doing. Its just set up weird. My ps3 is offset btw. Its like they took off the top and didnt put it back on right, Im gonna have Ryan look at it. I want to game but I think Im done with Dantes Inferno, atleast for the night lol. Probably just gonna pop in a movie and either work on my story, which Ill explain in a minute or read Feed. Oh I started my sea monkeys, well Im purifying their water right now and tomorrow at 11 I can put the eggs in, so in like a week Ill have tiny shrimp to look at.
So about that story. TJ gave me that idea about coming up with a story and taking pictures to go along with it. I came up with a general idea, Chiara likes it but TJ told me it wasnt a real story... See heres where Im at after just a day of thinking about it so its gonna change a lot. But what I want is to change and flip the prince and princess story, maybe even darken it up a bit cause Im weird like that. But I want the princess to rescue the prince, and it is NOT going to be a love story. Not every story needs to be a damn love story people. Now either she will rescue him and turn down his offer to make her queen and become just another normal person outside the kingdom and he will go do his thing and marry some chick in a different story. Or she will rescue him, turn down his offer to make her queen, and go on to be some badass warrior saving the people from general evil and mistreatment. Or we can just cut out the rescue and make this really twisted and she can kill him as some "free the people" sort of thing lol. Its a working progress but I want a prince and a princess, and I dont want a love story. We will see where it goes from here. Ryan says hes gonna find me models, but Id really be more comfortable just using my friends. Im patient, I can wait til Chiara comes back lol.
Its 2.. I just attempted to clean out my top drawer n decided I need to invest in something to put my shit in. I need a job.. Things cost too much, Christmas is gonna come in like Jan./Feb. lol just like when I was a kid. Hey, it doesnt matter when you get someone something, it just matters that you got it at all. Well I think Im gonna get a bit of candy, brush my teeth, work out, crack open my book and call it a night. I hate being alone.

Sticky note. I like racoons, raccoons... Is it a double c? It very well could be but fuck it, I used one lol I dont have internet to check myself. Anywho, they are cute and I want to pet one. One that wont bite me preferably lol.
I stuck it to Shyannes dresser, which my stuff is sitting on lol well minus the TV but Im currently using that. Juno, GOW Collection, and Dantes Inferno are up there along with my PS3. Iv got friends in low places is playing on the TV, and you can see my purdy Christmas lights. Oh and I totally did bubble letters :D I know, Im a dork.. but Im very much ok with that

Well goodnight all, all that actually read this lol Um thanks for reading? Sweet dreams to you. Id say I love you, but who knows.. Maybe your some creep, but even if you are I mean I love you for reading? I dont know, please dont kill me :) lol I need sleep!!! XP

the pillow queen

the pillow queen

I love how in the mess that is my room right now (I haven't had the time or the energy to clean it, but believe me, on friday it's getting a mini-makeover) nitelite has found the one pillow on the floor. I'm kind of relieved because she keeps wanting to use this throw pillow I like to sleep on. it's really silky softish (can't remember the name of the material right now...but it's kind of a large knit material, not like cotton) and whenever she wants to wake me up in the morning, she does the little kitty claw kneading thing which is making pulls and holes in the fabric. I'm glad she's using a different pillow (until I get in bed at least) but I know she's putting holes and pulls in the squish pillow too. grah.

I think she's getting old too. she's not acting like it or anything, but I was thinking about how old cleo is and how much older that makes nitelite. she's got to be pushing 13 I would think...that's old in kitty years. I think our oldest was miso who died at 16. milo is getting on up there too. I got her in kindergarten...so that puts her at 16 like miso. assuming my math is right. she's still alive and kicking though. she gets midnight crazies (or at least when she lived with me last semester she still did) and I bet she still catches critters outside, although since her snakebite incident mom and dad have tried to keep her safely inside. she liked to lay on the back porch with the dogs though, but maybe she doesn't want to be out there now there aren't any dogs...sorry, my mind wanders.

I can't believe how soon my birthday is. I still remember my birthday last year and it seems like it was only a month or so ago. what a year that's gone by.

I hope nitelite and cleo live until the big move to graduate school. I don't think I could do it without them. even if I got new pets, I like coming home to the girls I've known for more than a decade. that familiarity is comforting. a new puppy is fun, but I wouldn't really "know" them yet. it would be like having a baby--they're not even a person yet, they're just something that plays and eats and poops. cleo and nitelite do those things too, but I know I can hug them whenever I want and i know when I get in bed, they'll get in too and I know nitelite will wake me up in the morning when its breakfast time...I still really miss snowball too. I cried over him yesterday in the shower. I never know what makes me think of him. I cry over willie sometimes too, but I was closer to snowball. some animals are such charming characters, they're unforgettable and it's rare a day goes by that I don't miss them. I know I'll miss my girls when they're time comes. I hope I won't have to make the decision to put them down or not. I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

can you tell I'm supposed to be doing homework?

A Goose in the Shower . . . Is Good Clean Fun

This collection of verse transports the reader through seas of double meanings, suggestiveness, intimate views of personal behavior, satire, and elusive love. It parallels the seriousness of Poe with parodies of form evoking the terror of The Raven, and with an air of levity, these portray the frustrations of a self-storage center manager in The Craven, and a language professor in The Maven, both of which follow the style and form of the insuperable E. A. Poe. A look at the innocence of alternate sexuality and the novelty of youthful personal interaction is portrayed in The Young and the Gay which itself expresses an attitude about social views of human emotion without taking a stand. It leaves the perception up to the reader to come to any conclusions. A Goose in the Shower is a playful presentation of the fads and foibles of human sexual behavior, and it objectively observes the patterns of courtship in many of the venues where it is least expected to be observed.

Dark That Day, After All (Nights Gone By)

Dark That Day, After All (Nights Gone By)

Excerpted from the anthology NIGHTS GONE BY -- by #1 Kindle Suspense author Jason McIntyre comes the story of two old souls connecting under darkening skies.

On this day, as they peer into the heavens together, elderly Jarvis Schloss unburdens his soul to another park dweller as they sit on his favorite park bench. In the tradition of Rod Serling, this eerie tale begins as the two each reflect on the primes of their lives and uncover something even darker than the sky overhead. DARK THAT DAY, AFTER ALL explores our relationship with others, our duty to them, and whether we can expect to trade someone else's good fortune for our own.

How Mirror Neurons Help Us to Empathize, Really Feel Others' Pain

How Mirror Neurons Help Us to Empathize, Really Feel Others' Pain

Sharon Begley
Wall Street Journal
March 4, 2005; Page B1

As the argument at the bar grows more heated, you notice that you're right in the flight path should the ranting man decide to turn glassware into missiles. You watch tensely as he clasps and unclasps the tumbler in front of him, and then suddenly his grip changes. Is he about to take a gulp ... or fire the glass in your direction?

If you duck just as it sails over your head, you can thank a cluster of neurons whose existence scientists didn't even know about a few years ago: mirror neurons.

Their modest name reflects their most obvious function but hardly does justice to their talents, which neuroscientists seem to uncover more of every time they look -- from intuiting other people's intentions to feeling their pain. Literally.

"Mirror neurons promise to do for neuroscience what DNA did for biology," neurobiologist V.S. Ramachandran of the University of California, San Diego, has written, explaining "a host of mental abilities that have remained mysterious."

In 1992, biologists at the University of Parma, Italy, were probing the brains of macaque monkeys when they made a curious discovery. It had been known for years that brain cells in the premotor cortex, the area that plans movements, fire right before the monkey grasps, manipulates or reaches for something such as fruit. But it turns out that these specialized neurons also fire when the monkey sees someone else (monkey or human) do so. Whether planning a movement or seeing one, mirror neurons fire the same way: The firing pattern that precedes, say, the monkey's lifting a raisin to its mouth is identical to the pattern when it sees someone else doing that.

The human brain has mirror neurons, too, and recently neuroscientists have been behaving like Egyptologists after the discovery of the Rosetta Stone: using mirror neurons to explain a backlog of enigmas.

For one thing, mirror neurons may be how we understand the intentions of other people, a crucial social skill whether or not you frequent fight-prone bars. In a new study, neuroscientists scanned the brains of volunteers while they watched videos of a hand reaching for a mug. In one clip, the mug sat in a neat arrangement of teapot, mug, pitcher of milk and plate of cookies; in another, it sat amid a knocked-over pitcher, used napkin and cookie crumbs; in a third the mug sat alone.

If the only thing mirror neurons do is fire when they see someone perform a movement, the volunteers' brains should have shown the same activity whether the hand was reaching for the mug as if to drink, in the first scene, to clean up in the messy scene or with no context. But that's not what happened. As Marco Iacoboni of UCLA and colleagues report in the March issue of PLoS Biology, mirror neurons were only a little active when the hand grasped the lone mug. But they perked up when the hand reached for the cup as if to drink from it (in preparty mode) or to wash it (post party).

"This suggests that mirror neurons do not simply recognize actions but are also involved in decoding people's intentions," says Prof. Iacoboni. "People seem to have specific neurons that code the 'why' of some action, predicting the behavior of others."

And that makes social interactions possible. At the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science last month, researchers said that because these neurons fire both when we see someone move as when we move ourselves, they make equivalent "what others do and feel and what we do and feel." We do not just see an action; we also experience what it feels like to someone else.

Mirror neurons "re-create the experience of others within ourselves," as UCLA's Mark Thompson put it in his AAAS remarks. They "allow us to put ourselves in the shoes of another." That makes them the neural basis of empathy.

"To function well with other people, we need to understand where they're coming from so as not to misread their intentions," says Regina Pally, a psychotherapist in Los Angeles and a clinical professor at UCLA. "Mirror neurons are what let us understand others' emotions." In fact, mirror neurons in people are connected to the brain's emotion region, the limbic system: When your mirror neurons fire in a reflection of someone else's, it triggers empathic emotions.

Mirror neurons also let us feel another person's pain. The same cortical neurons that process the sense of touch also fire when you see someone else touched. And a region that registers disgust that you feel directly also fires when you see expressions of disgust on others (hence the visceral wallop of "Fear Factor").

Instead of merely seeing what other people do and feel, said Christian Keysers of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, "we start to feel their actions and sensations in our own cortex as if we would be doing these actions and havi

Seven Falun Gong practitioners were arrested while doing exercises in a local park in Singapore on Oct. 5.

Police handcuffed four of the practitioners, citing “vandalizing public property” after they put posters on a wall. Three others, who were meditating, were not handcuffed, since "meditation is allowed," according to police.

Police are still holding the passports of the practitioners, who are Chinese nationals. Falun Gong, a spiritual practice, is currently persecuted in China by the Chinese regime, and if the practitioners were deported it is likely they would face torture.

In Singapore, the practitioners have done their daily exercises at Esplanade Park, a popular tourist site near the Singapore River, for years. On the wall, they use Sticky Tack to put up posters illustrating the persecution in China.

The police officers claimed that the posters damaged the wall. The practitioners explained that the Sticky Tack does not leave marks, and offered to sweep the ground and clean the area every morning.

Practitioners said the police handcuffed the four without warning or clear explanation. The police took all seven to the police station.

After police confiscate all posters. (Mingguo Sun/The Epoch Times) The three practitioners who had earlier meditated were asked to write statements and reveal personal information before they could be freed, while the other four, all Chinese nationals, remained handcuffed and were interrogated at the police station.

According to the practitioners, they left the police station at around midnight, after being locked up for more than 14 hours.

Another Arrest

In a related incident the same morning, five to six plainclothes policemen, along with a cameraman, arrived unannounced at the office of Zhang Tao, another Falun Gong practitioner, and demanded to check his car.

According to Zhang, who helps to ferry Falun Gong banners, posters and fliers to the Esplanade Park every morning by car, the policemen confiscated his materials and took him to the police station.

“I began to sense something was very amiss when they ordered me to remove my personal possessions such as wallet, shoes, socks, and belt before asking me to sit on an iron stool inside a long dark alley where I could hear noises coming from the locked up cells,” said Zhang. “The next thing I knew was I was handcuffed.”

“I told them I needed to see the prosecutor immediately, for I have done nothing to deserve this senseless treatment.”

One of the policemen told Zhang that he would be charged with public property vandalism, and questioned Zhang about the origin of the Falun Gong banners and posters, as well as how frequently he drove the materials to the Esplanade Park.

People are reading posters at the walkway below Esplanade Bridge, before police confiscate all posters. (Mingguo Sun/The Epoch Times) Zhang said "public property vandalism" could not justify his being handcuffed, and demanded to see the prosecutor. The officers ignored his entreaties.

After more than 13 hours of detention, Zhang was allowed to return home on bail around midnight, but the police kept his passport.

The practitioners were told to return in two weeks time, on Oct. 16, for the verdict.

Spokesperson for the U.S.-based Falun Dafa Information Center, Levi Browde, said there is a real concern that the practitioners could get deported to China.

“If they are deported they are at risk of severe persecution,” he said. “We will reach out to the Singapore government to make sure they are safe, and to explain the exact facts of the persecution in China to make sure they understand the stakes of an action such as deportation.”

Knight After Night (Vampire Assassin League)

THE VAMPIRE

Highland Vampire Thoran MacKettryck's lonely. Bitter. Vengeful. For centuries now, he's taken lives for profit and drained blood for free. Just like always. But then he's gifted what every immortal craves: his mate. He just can't believe his eyes when he finally hunts her down.

HIS MATE

Jolie Pritchard's young. Studious. Driven. Studying Medieval Literature is her life and this scholarship - her dream. She's the last thing an arrogant, gorgeous, world-class playboy should be pursuing and she knows it. If only he wasn't the most thrilling male she's ever imagined...

THE CURSE

She was warned. She didn't listen.

Knight After Night is a 20,000 word paranormal romance novella.

EXCERPT

"You want this?" He lifted an eyebrow.

"Not especially."

"Good."

He pitched it into the center of the river without any effort. They both watched it hit water and immediately sink. The muscles displayed in his arm had moved. Flexing. Rippling. The guy was built. Masculine. And he was gorgeous. And he was worried about performing for her. Jolie sighed. She'd known it was too good to be true. But it had sure been a fun fantasy.

"What is it?" he asked.

"You. And your...uh...impotence. I'm sorry. Truly."

"What impotence?"
"I should've known, really. It was right in front of my face. No wonder you're here. Right now. With me."

"What...does that mean?"

Thoran had his hair pulled back, but a lock had escaped the bond. Jolie noted how it caressed his brow and moved with every blink of his eyelashes as he looked down at her. He'd moved again, turning toward her, as if to envelope and encompass her completely. With the confused look reflected in those silver eyes, it was impossible not to feel a swoon coming on. She knew exactly what it felt like. And to disguise all of that, she opened her mouth and started talking.

"There's no reason to get all uptight and upset. I'm sure it happens to every guy. If they've used it too much. Or taken the wrong kinds of drugs for too long. Or had a bad experience with the wrong party. I read the tabloids. Get bombarded with the television ads. It's not that uncommon. Even in a guy as young as you."

"What are you speaking of now?"

"You're unable to...get it up. And now you're mad," she whispered.

"Get what up?"

"That's it. I'm done. I can believe you're a world class playboy who's lost his ability. I can definitely believe you'd attempt to get it back by pursuing and then charming the hell out of a little nobody from the end of nowhere. But I can't believe I actually thought for one moment you were a vampire. I can't. I must've inhaled something from the fumes in that basement. That's the only explanation."

He wasn't just closer. He was overpowering, looming over her and making certain of his domination with an arm about her back. He pulled her close. Right atop his lap, while his eyes narrowed to slits of mirrored silver.

"It's ok, Thoran. Really. I won't tell anyone. I promise. You don't have to worry."

"Tell anyone what? That I'm a vampire?" He hissed the words.

"Who would believe that?"

GIVING HIMSELF A BATH

GIVING HIMSELF A BATH

My sweet Zooie had his teeth cleaned on Wednesday. He's five and this is his first cleaning. Just a routine procedure, but turned out to be a good thing we did it now. One of his lower canines had a pocket of tartar and beginning inflammation. Chronic inflammation can cause health problems over time in dogs and people. I want to keep my boy healthy. He's very special to me.

I'm feeling overwhelmed with the homeschooling, so still not on flickr as much as I'd like. I hope to get into a routine soon, so I can have a bit more time to myself.

All of the master pattern pieces include 1/4? (6 mm) seam allowances. This is the best seam allowance to use when sewing toddler clothes. You can use a regular sewing machine or a serger/overlock machine.
The master pattern includes sizes T1 to T4. Toddler sizing assumes that the toddler is wearing diapers. Patterns are made to fit specific body measurements with ease allowed for comfort and style. Before you trace the pattern, choose the size by comparing the toddler's measurements to the measurement chart. Choose the size closest to the height, then compare the chest, waist and hip measurements. If in-between sizes, choose the larger size. The book gives instruction for altering the patterns for the proper fit.

KWIK Vending Service has stocking issues.

KWIK Vending Service has stocking issues.

The company (KWIK Vending Service) that handles the vending machines where I work isn't perfect at stocking the machines.

They put the wrong things in them, with the wrong prices (which costs my employer money, because it's subsidized, and I've been told that KWIK charges based on what passes through the machine, regardless of price).

They often just spread out the items that haven't sold (presumably to avoid bringing new inventory in). They're losing sales, and people can't get what they want. It's annoying.

For a while, we had a chart hanging on the machine to remind the stocker how the items were supposed to be laid out... but it was consistently ignored.

I guess the competition for vending companies in Utah isn't very stiff.

Chaffinch with viral infection on legs

Chaffinch with viral infection on legs

Becoming quite a cause for concern, the level of infection in this species, make sure you wash your bird tables and feeders down with disinfectant and boiling water weekly out there folks.

For those interested , this is caused by a pappiloma virus, this virus enters occassionally through a small wound but is more usually injested as infected tissue , swells the individual cells on the legs and other bodily areas, but has a preference for highly keratinised areas (its no coincidence fish and lizards have their own variant of this virus, for they too are covered in keratin) and these highly expanded cells cause crusts and nodule-like growths. These are literally individual cells that the virus has caused to swell up to 400 times normal size. Its very much like being covered in and penetrated by hundreds of little hard warts. Net result, circulation is eventually lost in the limbs over many months, secondary infections or debilitation eventually claim the birds life. There is unfortunately no known cure

This virus should not be confused with bumblefoot, a common bacterial infection of the feet, often staphylococcal strains, spread by fecal material, dirty perches etc, which can be cured by antibiotic injections and topical antibiotic creams, combined with rigorous captive hygeine. It too is spread by bird table contact.

Chaffinch (along with pigeons, many birds of prey and most of the corvids - in fact in my time in animal rescue I never saw a bird species that couldnt get it )also regularly suffer frounce/canker/trichomonad infections. These basically cause respiritory and predigestive problems and is by far the mostdeadly of the three infections in terms of infection rate and death vs time. This again is spread by close contact, water baths, and is often initially ingested into the crop by mouth on infected foods. There is a treatment, various antiprotozoans like metronidazole can be force fed into birds or given in water, but for treatment to be successful treatment must be administered very early. By the time the infection is pronounced with strong smelling breath and cheesy secretions in the throat and lungs and crop, often its too late to save the bird, and for larger birds who may find the condition more survivable, secondary antibiotic therapy would probably have to be considered.

The one thing all these diseases have in common- dirty bird tables, perches, and old seed left around will increase levels of transmission, so when feeding your birds, clean everything at least once a fortnight, and do bird baths weekly at least. If you ever see an infected bird like the one above in your garden, cleanup must begin.

Trigene is often the professionals weapon of choice, though milton baby fluid, dettol etc all works as well. The ultimate weapon is of course a 5% bleach solution, pretty much nothing survives alkali that strong, but birds can be affected badly by the fumes of bleach and other non-ionic surfectants, so when bleaching stuff, rinse very well, and give a couple of days for the fumes to go before putting bird feeder items back in service.

Remember also that dehydration is your friend when it comes to killing bugs, small permeable perches (not plastic obviously) or metal feeders could be roasted on a low heat in an oven for an hour, and remember just hosing stuff down does not count as cleaning, if you keep all the wooden stuff in your garden wet with daily hosing and you could actually increase chances of infection. Stone baths should becleaned left to go dry occassionally, you can always put a bowl out temporarily if the birds have an urgent need for water. If you want to kill bugs, the theme is clean and dry, not a bit cleaner and perpetually moist.

Steam cleaners are good though and if you feed a lot of birds a good hot one is worth the investment, gets the bird crap off a treat, and of course will kill some germs. Sunlight UV is also your friend, it kills most bugs in hours when conditions are dry.

So this is after the kill & during clean-up. The killroom is full of bloodspatter as is the kill surface. The knives are cleaned and packed away. Just one pesky hand to wrap and put in the black bag. Some of the plastic sheets in the corner (you can never have enough of those). The victim pics are also covered in blood. Used 2 different red paints to try and imitate blood drying vs wet blood.
