Blizzard "substantially increasing" its WoW Classic server capacity

Blizzard has announced that it's "substantially increasing" its server capacity after huge queues of players began forming to play World of Warcraft Classic. Since launch earlier this week, images started appearing online of players forming actual in-game lines waiting patiently to complete quests. Outside the game, other queues formed as saturated medium-sized realms couldn't let in any more players.

A Wednesday post on the Blizzard forums for WoW Classic says the developer is deploying a fix to increase the number of people who can log in and play the game. It expects this to shorten the wait time, and for some servers to have no waiting at all. Ian Hazzikostas, World of Warcraft game director, responded to the criticism on the Blizzard forums over the long queues. "We've tried to prioritize the long-term health of our realm communities, recognizing that if we undershot the mark in terms of launch servers, we could move quickly to add additional realms in the opening hours," he said Tuesday. "But if we went out with too many servers, weeks or months down the line we'd have a much tougher problem to solve." Players on the WoW forums are reporting that there are still up to 10,000 player queues to enter some popular servers. Whether the fix has gone live or not is hotly debated, but mathematically speaking, even if server capacity is increased by few thousand, that's likely not going to put much of a dent in a five-figure queue.

While I'm personally baffled by the huge success of World Of Warcraft Classic, I can't help but feel that long server queues and developers scrambling to fit more players in is an authentic part of the retro MMO experience. Probably not intentional on Blizzard's part, but even the forum complaints have me a little nostalgic. If there's one thing both Horde and Alliance can agree on, it's that queues are their real enemy right now.
