Vaio Pictureframe
(Formerly a broken Sony Vaio Picturebook C1VE)
In the end I decided to go for something a little smaller than in the previous image. Hanging a keyboard and mouse on the wall isn't entirely practical anyway.
I've still not come up with a "proper" use for this, and I'll probably replace the 802.11b wireless card (left) with something faster and with an aerial that can be moved so it doesn't stick out.
Currently streaming movies over the Internet via Shoutcast... the 1024x480 widescreen display is quite good for that, and of course, it has built in speakers.
Software wise, it's running a modified Slax Linux Live CD installed on the internal Microdrive. Possibly an odd choice, but I needed something small with a desktop environment, and Slax recognised all the obscure Vaio hardware out of the box.

This is what I spent this weekend making, including fitting it in a box badly. The wire coming into it is to flash it with firmware.
In an attempt to make my house more like a 1950s "home of the future" one thing I want is to be able to wirelessly control stuff. B&Q do a range of cheap devices called HomeEasy that aren't very good but will do until I can produce my own line of better ones.
This device can wirelessly communicate with devices on the 433MHz frequency, and also has some general I/O. My current plan is to buy some cheap wireless temperature sensors meant for in/out thermometers, put them in every room, read the settings from those and control the central heating boiler by a modified HomeEasy lighting unit.
The I/O will also make my doorbell work via the computer.
Dan leaps the Sun... Day 144, 24/5/2010, 365/2010
I've had in mind this shot for a while, after I saw it on Joe Mcnally's blog/video/book.. Haven't quite executed it to my complete level of satisfaction, could be a little sharper, probably needed a bit more shutter speed and a bit better light setup, and a bit better this or that! Also needed to warn dan just after the BBQ he'd be leaping around the beach like a fool!
Also as i took a little longer than i planned.. the sun had gone! next time!!

My grandfather on a Belgian-made Sarolea motorcycle, somewhere in the 1930s around Neede, The Netherlands.
When I grew up, he didn't ride a motor any more. I guess he stopped somewhere around the second world war.
One story about that is that he had his 1920s 4 cylinder FN motor hidden in a barn to stop the germans from nicking it. It survived the war, and grandpa traded it... for a sewing machine, which they needed more then.

Friday evening the wireless connection we were using didn't work anymore, and saturday morning it still wasn't up. So after going to the office to get my fix ;-) we went to Comcast in Sunnyvale to get cable (both TV and internet). Got an appointment for today. After that we just drove around a bit, mostly in San Jose. When we got home the connection was back up.
So today we looked up a TV on craig's list and went and picked it up in South San Francisco (very heavy!). After that the Comcast guy came by and installed the cable stuff (on a sunday!). So now we've got our own connection, so we can do something about it when it's down :-)
It's slowly starting to look like a real living room... I'll post a picture of the couch tomorrow (if I remember).
Year 3~Day 210 +181/365 AND Day 941: Another Day - Another TV Show
I am healing just fine from my surgery, but it is a little boring sitting in my lounge chair 24 hrs/day. I only get up to walk with Rosalie's walking cane to walk to the restroom.
Today I am watching 'I Love Lucy' shows on Hallmark. I don't remember seeing these shows, but it has been a long time since I've seen Lucy shows.
Thanks, all my friends, for your nice comments. I am still using my Treo Smartphone for my Internet connection.

Wireless collection point
I was one of the people who helped set this up. It's part of the equipment that provides free wireless Internet for all of downtown Silver Spring (I didn't do hardware, I worked on OS and program setup).
It seems odd that the collection point is covered by a set of blinds peeking out the window.
wireless internet phone
Wireless mobile phone access to the Internet will add a new dimension to the way we access information and communicate. This book is devoted to the presentation of recent research on the deployment of the network protocols and services for mobile hosts and wireless communication on the Internet. This book examines these two methods of Internet access and presents research papers that propose extensions and optimizations to the existing protocols for mobility support. One can assume that in the near future new mobiles will appear that will support multiple wireless interfaces. Therefore, the new version of the Internet Protocol (IPv6) will be one of the next challenges for the wireless community.
