Jimmy Page described this as the band's most important album. The album was conceived after Robert Plant sustained injuries from a car accident on the Greek Island of Rhodes. The album was recorded in just 18 days with Robert Plant recording from his wheelchair. Page stated in an interview with Guitar World in 1998 that he worked an average of 18-20 hours per day during the mixing period at Music Land Studios. Now that is dedication! The album artwork produced by Storm Thorgeson features people interacting with a black obelisk-shaped object. This item was simply referred to as "The Object" inside the album sleeve. It was intended to represent the force and presence of Led Zeppelin. The background of the image is an artificial marina which was installed inside Earls Court for the the 1974/5 Annual Boat Show.
