It's the American Dream to own your own home. We sold our old house almost 5 years ago because we were tired of replacing things in it and bought a newer build.
We are now in the process of refinancing our mortgage & our home equity together in one loan. It will save us money each month by doing this. The lady that does the home value assesments came today and she asked for a list of all the improvements we have made as of today in our home.
I was shocked when I saw the final total. Over $60,000 we have spent on improvements in our home within the past 4 years and 9 months!!!
It's funny because we bought a newer house so we didn't have to spend this kind of money.
At least the only thing we have left remaining in our house to replace or redo is 2 rooms upstairs need new carpeting & I would really like a new/bigger kitchen. We did get an estimate for that but I wasn't willing to spend $40,000.
American dream? I'm not sure now.

Home values of owner-occupied units in Austin. Again, you can see the least valuable home are in East Austin, the yellow-cream area in the southeast. I'm somewhat surprised to see the most valuable owner-occupied units to be right around the UT campus. Certainly the monocentric-population density model of land values would indicate this, but there is a lot of other stuff going on, like the beginning of suburban development, potential conflict with the growing student body, etc.
