- (Photo Printer) A photo printer, also called snapshot printer, is a computer printer that is specifically designed to print high quality digital photos on photo paper. These printers usually have a very high number of nozzles and are capable of printing droplets as small as 2 picoliters.
- (Photo printer) In computing, a printer is a peripheral which produces a hard copy (permanent readable text and/or graphics) of documents stored in electronic form, usually on physical print media such as paper or transparencies.
Not A Photo
Not A Photo
This image is a good example of the type of work that I do. You may not like it; the composition is all wrong . That doesn’t matter; this is an instructional picture….. I painted this image to demonstrate that my work is not photography.
I insist that this is a “light painted” image not a photograph and I think I can prove it to any rational person.
In this image you can see the “blue” iridescence of the candlestick glass. That can only be done with black light on the glass. And it must be a long exposure to get the glow. Some objects here would glow if exposed to the black light but don’t so they must have been added after the black light was turned off. You can reason this out by looking at the picture.
This image is in fact one long open shutter exposure. There is no stacking of composite images going on here. Nothing inserted or changed after the shutter was closed.
But, while there is obviously a long exposure of black light on some glass and white cotton; there is also candle wick light that is only about 5 seconds (this must be true because the candle flame would blow out the entire image if left for the entire exposure.)
Also, the cotton napkin was moved during the exposure as was the candy dish from camera left to right. See, the same objects in different locations. But no streaked blurring showing motion.
And , the background blue light shows action and must have been applied during the long exposure in the dark.
All the above taken together means that this can’t be a photograph as we understand the term.
So, from the beginning…..
I paint images.
The “canvas” that I use is a digital sensor that measures 22mm by 15 mm. Like two US postage stamps side by side. This is very small so I need a way of magnifying the “canvas” surface so I can see the image I’m painting on the sensor.
Ok, so I’ll use a magnifying glass or several stacked together in a tube. A camera lens.
Now , I want to share the image with others on the internet and show the picture that I painted to a photo printer so they can print my painting. Best to do this by digitizing the image.
I’ll need a computer to do the digitizing after the sensor has captured my painting. I might as well connect the sensor to a computer and put all this in a box. Let’s call the box a camera and the magnifier is as I said a camera lens. Why invent all this from scratch? I’ll just by the parts containing the sensor and use that as a kit.
Problem is; people will look at my work and call it a photo. But it is not.
If you go into an art museum or gallery and look at a Dutch Master still life painting on the wall and call it a photograph you would be wrong.
Miss-naming something causes confusion to all who hear the error. I could take a snap shot of the painting and call it a photo of a painting. That would be correct. If you look at the above image and call it a photograph ; that would be wrong, it is not.
It is a painted image on a digital sensor. The ‘paint’ is not acrylic nor water color nor oil based paint. Those media would mess up the sensor surface and void the warranty. The media I use is determined by the designers of the digital sensor and must be light. Any kind of light. Some direct at the camera and some reflected.
In the above image several kinds of light were used to paint the image on the sensor “canvas”. Fire (candle wick ), electrical wire (background shone at the camera), black light reflected off the glass and white cotton; and LED key chain light aimed at the objects through wax paper to filter it.
No flash bulbs, no compiling of several images (just one exposure) , no post processing….but, lots of work moving things around during the exposure and applying different light to the scene.
Now, all this must be done in the dark, obviously. You can’t have overhead lighting on the scene or it would wash out all the applied painted light.
So there has to be skill used in focus, framing and light application in the dark. It must be light painting not a snap shot and not flash photography.
As you can see there are few “views” of this image on my Flicker photostream. So I’m just talking to myself here. But I’m trying to say that I told the world that the work on this, my site, is not, not photography (except for a very few images). Out of doors in the dark of night and indoors creating a still life…. These are light painted images only.
Sorry for sounding strident or preachy. I’m just trying to prevent people from misunderstanding what they are looking at here.
