Suzuki RE5 Rotary My first (and probably last) photograph to be published on the cover of a national magazine. The bike is mine as well. I have been collecting and restoring vintage motorcycles for well over 20 years now. It keeps me out of trouble (mostly) during our long Minnesota winters. The RE5 has a rotary engine. Suzuki spent untold millions of dollars in research and development to produce these machines. They were sold for only for two model years, 1975 and '76. They did not sell well and Suzuki nearly went out of business absorbing the loss. A total of about 6200 were produced during those two years. I have 4 in my collection. This one is all original, including the tires, and has less than 9000 miles on it. It does get ridden every season, however. I was lucky and picked up mine many years ago when they were cheap and readily available. Their desirability as a collectible bike has increased quite a bit over the past 5 years. 1975 was a bad time to bring out a motorcycle as thirsty as these babies. I can get mileage as poor as 18 per gallon when ridden in anger. They were Suzuki's answer to the question no one asked. Now if I just could have coaxed a bird into landing on the handlebars. :) Lanesplitter Mercier Kilo TT 50cm, blacked out w/reflective motorcycle tape. 2010.03-29.1501. Ebbtide St., Christchurch 7, New Zealand. A 2010 picture of a street where an aunt of mine lived from 1971 to 1980. You can tell it's not in England because: 1) The grassy area looking out over the estuary would be littered with beer cans, vodka bottles, dodgy looking cigarette butts, fast-food containers, syringes, etc. as it would be a late-night hangout for yobs in cars playing loud 'music', etc.. 2) The wall outside what was my aunt's bungalow would have graffiti tags on it & the verge would be litterd with crisp packets, food wrappers, dog muck, etc.. 3) Louts would be riding off-road motorcycles on the estuary mud-flats. 4) Even at 3pm on Mondays there would be vehicles parked on the pavement, belonging to people who don't bother working for a living & belonging to 'cowboy' builders & dodgy tradespeople preying on older residents. 5) The grassy area by the estuary would be a magnet for 'fly-tippers' & would have a few dumped fridges, tyres, televisions, building materials, etc.. We stopped to drag this off the road. Hitting tire at speeds of 100+km/hr would be not nice, and this was just over a ridge. 1952 Agajanian Special left Joshua "J.C./Aggie" Agajanian (June 16, 1913 – May 5, 1984) was an influential figure in American motorsports history. He was a promoter and race car owner. Agajanian was born in San Pedro, California, just six months after his father had immirated to the United States, with his entire family, including some cousins, out of war-torn Armenia. He grew up a hard-working young man in the family’s refuse collection and hog ranching businesses, which Aggie would later oversee. At 18, Agajanian had saved enough money to buy a race car. When he told his father that he was going to become a race car driver, the elder Agajanian’s reaction was not what young Aggie had hoped. Looking at the car in the garage, his father said to J.C., "So you are going to be a race driver, that’s fine. Just a few things I want you to do first. Go kiss your mother goodbye, pack your bags since you won’t be living here anymore and while you’re at it, change your name." The racing game was brutal in the 1930s. Drivers were dying almost every other week on the dirt ovals of Southern California and Agajanian’s father understandably didn’t want his son to become another statistic. A compromise was settled upon. J.C. could keep the car, but only in the capacity of an owner. J.C. agreed and at 18 became perhaps one of the youngest car owners in automobile racing. While Agajanian never achieved his childhood dream of becoming a race driver, he did almost everything else, from promoting races to building cars and discovering drivers. While promoting a race under the blazing desert sun in Arizona, Agajanian purchased a Stetson cowboy hat to protect his head. The hat became Aggie's trademark and he was rarely seen without it. His trademarks were a cowboy hat and high-heeled boots made especially for him in Spain. The Armenian heir to a fortune built on pig farming and garbage collection. J. C. was partial to the number "98" and used the number his Indianapolis, Sprint and Midget cars, a tradition which has continued for generations in the family. He was instrumental in the development of the air jack for faster tire changes at Indy and in the 1930s was president of the Western Racing Association. His race organizer expertise spanned the country and he became the first race organizer to present 250 United States Automobile Club events, ranging from Midget races like the traditional Turkey Night Grand Prix at his beloved Ascot Park in Gardena, California (now held at Irwindale Speedway), to numerous Championship Dirt Car races at state fairgrounds tracks. From 1948 through 1971, his cars won three pole positions for the Indianapolis 500, set four track records and won the race twice. Troy Ruttman (1952) and Parnelli Jones (1963) both won the 500 in Agajanian machines. "I didn’t even know my dad was bald until I was a teenager," joked his son, J.C. Agajanian Jr. "He even wore the hat sitting down for breakfast in the morning. My mother was always getting on him about that." Notable drivers for Agajanian included: Bill Vukovich II, Walt Faulkner, Troy Ruttman and Parnelli Jones. Troy Ruttman won the Indianapolis 500 in 1952, and as of 2007[update], he is the youngest winner of the race. From 1950–1960, the Indianapolis 500 also counted toward the World Drivers' Championship (now synonymous with Formula One), although most of the racers did not compete in the other races in the Championship. Ruttman was the first Indianapolis 500 winner to participate in a Formula One event beyond Indy[1] and his 1952 Indy 500 win earned him the distinction of being the youngest driver to win a round of the World Championship, an honor he held until Fernando Alonso won the 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix. The Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, often shortened to Indianapolis 500 or Indy 500 and commonly known simply as The 500, is an American automobile race, held annually over the Memorial Day weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. The event lends its name to the IndyCar class, or formula, of open-wheel race cars that have competed in it. The event, billed as The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, is one of the oldest, and considered one of the three most significant, motorsports events in the world. While the official attendance is not disclosed by Speedway management, with a permanent seating capacity for more than 257,000 people and infield seating that raises capacity further to an approximate 400,000, it is the largest single-day sporting event in the world. 1952: Bill Vukovich leads 150 laps until his steering pin breaks and he crashes on lap 192. Twenty-two-year-old Troy Ruttman takes the checkered flag, the youngest-ever winner. On the pole for the '52 race was Fred Agabashian's Diesel-powered racer that succumbed to supercharger trouble on lap 71. I got to the park twice as fast and with less effort than I would've using my mountain bike. FANTASTIC. I'm overjoyed. I'm never riding that steel hunk of metal again. PLOTS OF COASTAL TRIANGULATION MAP ROSLYN what you see here is a raster image of a very small piece of a very large map that the DeLorme people have put into a computer program that i use a lot in my surveying job. it is a series of lines and points that were plotted in the program showing as best as possible the modern-day and most-probable locations of the triangulation stations, azimuth points, and bearing points that you can see on the photo of the Chesapeake Bay Progress Sketch Map, just previous to this entry. i really wish i knew more about the Coastal Survey. but this is what i do know. the previously depicted map is entitled as a Progress 'sketch', showing at the time of its publishing in 1873, how much of the entire Chesapeake Bay had been surveyed by the field mapping section of the department, The United States Coastal Survey. the sketch map was hanging on a wall of my home, until i recently put it 'on loan' with the Henricus Foundation at Dutch Gap, Chesterfield County, Virginia, and it measures around 2.5 feet wide and 3.5 feet tall. it is hanging now on a wall near the cubicle of one of the interpreters, and needs to be taken down to the gift shop and hung there when i can get back out there again. what i do know is that numerous of the best and brightest men graduating from the U S Military Academy at West Point, New York, would almost automatically gravitate to the Army Corps of Engineers and that the U S Coast Surveys borrowed from this source of talent rather liberally. a gentleman named E. O. C. Ord, who was present as a Union Army corps commanding general, appeared in the parlor of Wilmer McLean, at Appomattox Courthouse on 9 April, 1865, as Lee signed the surrender papers. from the annual reports of field activities of the Coast Survey map-makers, it can be noticed that Ord had gotten a job on one of the survey crews and one of his first assignments had been mapping the James River in the early 1850's. those folks who are interested in Colonial Heights history can begin to enjoy the tale that unfolds herewith: if you look carefully at the Appomattox River section of the map, you will notice a circle with lines spoking to the north, east, and south, and an annotation, "Brick House", that shows the map historian that the Coastal Survey mappers used one of the house chimneys as a reference point. also on the west banks of the Appo can be seen circles labeled "Walthall", "Hare", "Archer", and "Rosylyn", and even inside the city of Petersburg are circles "Pres. Ch.", and "Meth. Ch.". this is where the story gets technically interesting...taking a look at the map just to the northeast of Petersburg you can see a thickly drawn line labeled "BASE", not due to any precognition of Fort Lee being nearby oneday in the distant future. a shortline railroad venture, the City Point Railroad, had been run through from Petersburg to City Point, that was apparently financed by merchants of the two communities who were a bit tired of the fact that the siltating of the river prevented many ocean going vessels from getting all the way up-river to Petersburg's wharves. goods and tobacco hogsheads had to be loaded onto smaller barges to navigate this piece of the stream. why not link things up with the newfangled railroad cars, and bypass the good-old-boys running the river barge companies? so the map-makers were savy enough to use the clearing of this railroad from a point just across the road from the present-day Va Power center, thence up the arrow-straight right-of-way, to just another point just shy of where the rails crossed Harrison's Creek. they measured the heck out of this line, anchored on each end with a small stone monument sunk in the ground with a 'x' chiselled on the top, pulling right on the ground surface, marking the 'pulls' with small nails, dozens of times, applied in their calculations the proper temperature corrections for their brass metal chains, until they had ascertained that the God's-Mind distance was no more than a hair's-width of difference from the calculated-on-paper distance. then the survey crew would build a wood-frame tower over each monument, usually about 75 to 100 feet tall. a hole was in the platform flooring at the top and a wood frame was constructed right over this hole. a large brass theodolite instrument was then mounted on the small frame, and a 2 pound plumb-bob was suspended via a strong piano wire from the center of the instrument down the 33 yards to the 'x' in the stone monument. then the crew sets an oil lamp with a shiny reflector (you've seen an example of one if you have ever been to a Cracker Barrel restaurant) onto the center-plumbed upper frame of the other tower, waits till twilight, climbs up to the top platform of the opposing tower, levels up the theodolite perfectly using the vial bubbles mounted on the plate of the instrument, centering the plumb-bob right over the chiseled 'x' down below, and begins the t PLOTS OF COASTAL TRIANGULATION MAP WALTHALL what you see here is a raster image of a very small piece of a very large map that the DeLorme people have put into a computer program that i use a lot in my surveying job. it is showing a series of lines and points that were plotted in the program showing as best as possible the modern-day and most-probable locations of the triangulation stations, azimuth points, and bearing points that you can see on the photo of the Chesapeake Bay Progress Sketch Map, just previous to this entry. i really wish i knew more about the Coastal Survey. but this is what i do know. the previously depicted map is entitled as a Progress 'sketch', showing at the time of its publishing in 1873, how much of the entire Chesapeake Bay had been surveyed by the field mapping section of the department, The United States Coastal Survey. the sketch map was hanging on a wall of my home, until i recently put it 'on loan' with the Henricus Foundation at Dutch Gap, Chesterfield County, Virginia, and it measures around 2.5 feet wide and 3.5 feet tall. it is hanging now on a wall near the cubicle of one of the interpreters, and needs to be taken down to the gift shop and hung there when i can get back out there again. what i do know is that numerous of the best and brightest men graduating from the U S Military Academy at West Point, New York, would almost automatically gravitate to the Army Corps of Engineers and that the U S Coast Surveys borrowed from this source of talent rather liberally. a gentleman named E. Studded tyre time :: 323/365 What is it about bikes that makes them such uncooperative participants in the self-portrait? It doesn't help that my remote is broken. After some struggling with the bike and the camera I couldn't manage much better than this, and didn't get around to trying to take a more exciting photo today. Anyway, studded tyre time of year, lots of biking in the snow to get around town. For FGR - Look up Thursday and TOTW - Feelin fit 3/8 inch screws do the trick The instructions I found online said to use 1/2 inch screws but they were way too long... I had to back out all of the screws on the one tire I had finished and then re-do it again with 3/8 inch screws. I then couldn't get it to mount on the rear wheel, so I'm running a standard knobby mountain bike tire in the rear (works fine).
