Calgary Tower

You will learn the proper art of layering clothing, treating the textures of wool and cotton like gesso and oils. Your wardrobe will acquire a tinge of plaid, a wet dog reaction to rain. Walking inside is for locals, fifteen feet up in uncomfortably crowded pathways and tunnels suspended between downtown buildings. Outside is where it's at, where all the cool kids hang, freezing.

By the day of departure, temperature adaptation had kicked in, and, except for the rumbling fixation on enthusiastically swollen hockey headlines, the newspaper was less foreign. There was becoming here, a tribe I could infiltrate. Remembering gloves had become automatic. The patterns of the one way streets, a familiar philosophy learned from a minivan.

Without mountains, the sky is unrestricted, the horizon the proverbial dog, tail wagging, waiting to run for days. Limitless. From the highway, North, the city looks like a scale model of an architect's small, commercially printed card, something kind, with a phone number on the back. Inside invisible bounds, where unkind houses melt into the prairie, the city seems like a crumpled ship, collapsing the possibilities of flight into a very long walk.

Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion passed away today, on the day that his Number 5 would be retired in Montreal, at the Canadiens vs. Rangers game. This is a sad day for the world of hockey. It's also sad for me because I'm lucky enough to know Boom Boom's grandson, Blake, a USA hockey boy who attends my high school. Blake was nice enough to give me this autographed card last winter.

RIP, Boom Boom.

The plan of the grinder.

It's nice to see is so detailed but some of the details are missing.
The tool listings the parts, But there is not idea of size of any of the parts.
I would have like to see key parts on more detail, Like the air inlet size and thread used. Aslo the nuts that hold the disk on, they need lots of delails. Also there are a few different standards used around the world. ie Japanese sizes.

I hope to document this infomation in the future.

But that's nothing new from the industry.

I am, on the whole, not a fan of concrete, So, is this art?

Almost run over by Sidney Crosby !

T and I were walking round to the front of the TSN tent when a security guard asked us to stand back whilst a car parked up. We were stood within a couple of metres of the car when it stopped and Sidney Crosby got out of the back....for anyone who doesn't know, he's a bit of a superstar - rumoured to be the next Wayne Gretzky ! Anyway, he was virtually within arms reach, but dissappeared off pretty quick to within the TSN barriers.

at our wedding

at our wedding

This was taken at our wedding in 1977. Dad was 64 and really looking forward to retiring the following spring. The month after this picture, he travelled to San Francisco as a player on the Colorado Hockey team for the senior olympics. In august, he was diagonosed with lung cancer (he never smoked, but my mom was a 3-pack-a-day smoker), and he died a couple days after thanksgiving.

I'm really glad was here for our wedding. I only wish he would've been here to see our daughter, and to offer some adivse to me as I struggled with being a parent and husband.

But I have to say, I think he's been with me all along.

The little girl in the photo is my niece Karen, who is getting married this coming October in Calgary. I hope to be able to attend.

I wish this picture was better. Many of the color photos from those years seem to be bleaching out. Perhaps I can find the negative, and have a fresh print made for Karen before October.

Mom, bless her heart, was with us another ten years after this.

Shattuck-St. Mary's: Ice Arena

Shattuck-St. Mary's: Ice Arena

The main reason for Shattuck's fame is its hockey programs. As you can see from the banners on the ice arena, they have won numerous national titles for boys and girls, and run prestigious (and expensive) hockey camps. Along with Sidney Crosby, many NHL players have played for the Shattuck School: Ty Conklin, Patrick Eaves, Ryan Malone, Kyle Okposo, Jordan & Zach Parise, Jonathan Toews, and others. Also, it was recently discovered that Mario Lemieux's 16-year old daughter, Stephanie, will be participating in the girls hockey program in the fall of 2009.

Shattuck-St. Mary's is a prestigious boarding/prep school in Faribault, Minnesota. The school, established in 1858, has an annual enrollment of about 400 students. Students from 39 different states and 17 countries have attended the school, and pay as much as $41,000 per year to attend. It is known across the country for excellence in arts and sports, primarily hockey. Pittsburgh Penguins star, Sidney Crosby attended here along with several other noteable NHL players. Marlon Brando was also a Shattuck student, as was Hubert H. Humphrey III and Brent Musburger.
