The Tunnel at the End of the Light Have you ever been the sole possessor of information that could have a bunch of people put into prison for a very long time? Psychologically it's not a very good place to find yourself. After a while you start feeling kinda like you're walking around with 'bullseyes' all over yourself. You realize that for a good number of people, life would be a lot easier if you were dead. Once you come to that magnificently charming realization the next thing you gotta do is make it so that if anything happens to you, that the information isn't gonna die withya. Then ya gotta get that out there to the people who might want you dead. It's 'life insurance.' The kind that keeps you alive. It's better than the kind that pays off when you're dead... that should be called 'death insurance.' I'd found myself right in the middle of this treachery one day and I didn't like it one bit. One night as I was unlocking the front door of my house I wondered... if I took a bullet right now to the back of the head... would I feel it? Would I hear it? Would I see for a second blood and gore and pieces of my brains splattered on the front door in front of me before 'the lights went out?' Would that moment be like when you turned off an old TV and the whole picture seemed to shrink down quickly to one tiny dot of light and then vanish? What I knew scared me. I'd been told enough times to watch my back. That I knew who I was dealing with was scary enough... but as the scandal grew to incorporate more and more players who's names and faces I didn't know... Man. You couldn't know what it's like unless you've been there. And my friend... you're gonna help me out right now. There's only one last piece of the puzzle that I haven't shared with anyone. And I'm going to share it with you. Right here and right now. Right here on flickr. I've been avoiding the media for a couple of days now. I really don't wanna be talkin' about this stuff on TV anymore. The life I live 'behind the camera' is the one I really prefer. There was one moment in the whole stinking rotten episode that scared the living shit out of me. It made me drop the phone and it left me speechless and feeling pretty vulnerable. After I'd figured out their dirty little secret I hadda figure out who in the hell I could tell about what they were doing... who could I tell that would do something? I found out that the people who are supposed to make sure that water that we drink is clean and pure in this state is the Illinios Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). On some of the documents that Krista and I had obtained through FOIA requests that she'd made there was the name of a guy at the IEPA. I figured I'd start there. Jesus I can barely type right now just recalling those moments. The guy's name was Saavu. It looked like he'd been sent out there to test the water supply a couple of times and it seemed like he might be a little familiar with the setup and the goin's on there. I thought maybe I could trust him. The first time I got him on the phone he sounded kinda funny. You know I just couldn't put my finger on it but his demeanor was kind of odd. When I told him the story he assured me that he knew what was going on and that they weren't doing anything wrong. 'Maybe he just didn't get it' I thought... maybe he just needed to see the documents we'd found. Still... I figured he was the guy who could help bring all of this to light. I guess I really didn't know the true meaning of the word 'treachery' but I was about to learn it real fast. And it was gonna be a tough lesson at that. I told Saavu that I had lots more information... and I told him I'd get back to him. There were about six or seven more phone calls and I just couldn't understand why the guy from the IEPA was seeming to defend what these guys were doing. Even I knew it was fucking murder... but Saavu just seemed to keep brushing it off. I couldn't understand it. The very last time I called the IEPA I was starting to get frustrated and a little pissed off. Imagine calling 911 to tell them your house is on fire and they say 'we don't believe you... call back when you have proof.' Yeah. That's how I was feelin' here. But things were about to take a dramatic turn my friend. A very dark turn. I figured out a few more things... and I thought I'd give Saavu one more call... Maybe there was a little anger in my voice... maybe I sounded different to the receptionist... When I asked for Saavu she said 'hold on a minute Joe.' Joe isn't my name. But it is the name of The Fall Guy... the guy who ran the water operation in town. It also happened to be the name of The Snake... the guy everybody hated... The Old Man's head henchman... the one everybody figured was working with the feds first. I was on hold before I could correct her. When Saavu picked up the phone he sounded almost breathless. 'Joe' he said 'that guy keeps calling about the well.' My jaw dropped and the phone f 7days: Day 5 -- UP! I suppose I wasn't paying enough attention to Mary Ellen this morning because she felt the need to mess UP the magnets on my fridge, which meant I had to clean UP those magnets and restore them to their rightful place. Clearly I have too many things UP on my fridge, but it makes me feel at home to see the same stuff on my fridge every time we move. It just doesn't feel like *my* home till all that stuff is back up on my fridge. I headed to Ross and found this cute little case for $3.99 and bought a zip-up makeup brush case for another $3.99. I headed to the Dollar Store to find the plastic blue organizers and after wiping everything down with a swab of rubbing alcohol - it was ready to go! 358/365: underneath it all. Yep, me with zero makeup and zero creativity. I got nuthin' today. The fam is upstairs watching a movie, and while I usually partake on movie night, I just did not feel up to it. Today has flown by, but I guess I feel productive. I slept in, and Dave and I had a quiet breakfast together - it was nice. When I was not working we had breakfast together every morning and I realize how much I miss that. The makeup-less-ness is due to my spa day, where I got my usual 2 waxes and I also got a free mini-facial (not because of a referral or anything, but I think she felt so sorry for me and my skin becoming so dehydrated from moving here and we were talking about products so she just did it). Then I came home and picked up kiddos and we did the shopping we did not get to last night because we were running so late and then I finished up a ton of laundry and cleaned pretty much the whole house (Dave did some for me while I was gone, yay!). And then made dinner. And had dinner. And did the dishes. And gave myself a pedicure. And went into the basement to take this photo. And then wrote up a desc. with terrible grammar starting sentences with 'and'. ;-) I am tired. No early bedtime though. I have things I still want to do. I suspect the next 4 days until vaca are going to drag but I want to get the house clean (I hate coming home to a mess, especially since I will NOT have a rest/unpack day after we get home before going back to work! We get home fairly late that night and then work the next day) and just take care of some things. I have done photos with no makeup but this one just feels so BARE. You know how when you get a facial in the end your skin is better off but it really looks like hell the rest of that day? Yeah. Have I mentioned how much I am looking forward to getting away with Dave? I need it. WE need it (he may disagree but I strongly feel that way. It's been too long. We need time.). 50 Random Facts About Me #43: I think my biggest pet peeve is when people preach 'The Golden Rule' to no end and then do NOT follow it. I have had people do it to me (or you know, "do as I say, not as I do") and it amazes me how people can be. Things like that are the quickest way for me to lose respect for a person, and sadly I have lost some or most respect for people over the years who I interact with a lot because of this. 134: Pretty Green Eyes 134/365 +1 SOOC in comments! 4 down....1 to go! Exams that is...I only have my 'Performance Managment' next friday but that's my best topic and so I'm not too stressed about that one. I'm glad the others are over but I'm not looking forward to results day but anyway, nearly over now, can't go back! If your a regular visiter to my steams you'll know I live in student accomodation BUT not for long, the house we made an offer on, finally accepted... I'm so excited, it's a gorgeous house and should be living there within 8 weeks!! I had a different idea for this photo but I didn't have masking tape and so I just messed about with the make up with this being the result, I must say I love good lighting!! Resolutions - I'll explain everything {a recent period of severe illness combined with me moving sluggishly into a new stage of my life got me thinking. And when I think, I think a lot. About a lot. This resolution series is the outcome of me looking at myself reflectively and trying to weed out what pains me, and build upon what aids me} Resolution 1 is to understand and excavate my travels, share what I can, explain what I can't. ______________________________ Can a place stay with you? Can a town or a city, a building or a road uproot itself from all it is entangled in and become a part of you? Can even the slightest splinter or a cracked fragment of some fixed place lose its geography and become something of you? Logic would suggest otherwise, give a negative answer to thoughts so whimsical. But then logic doesn’t always hold sway in our lives: or at least not my own, I won’t speak for you. Instead I would say that in my life there are places which have become me, that have strung themselves through me and around my person in a way that goes beyond recollection or recall. These places, the markings on their walls, the expanse of their horizons, the people and the stories that they carry are all diminished within me: but they do not diminish me. I feel them even now, even years since I last left them. I feel them as surely as I do my chest rising with a morning breath or my eyes flitting in a nervous blink. It is a sensation of something stronger than memory, of something a touch more profound than simple pleasure or pain. These places, something of what they are and why they changed me is now within me even now. Careless words I know, slight little sentences looking for drama in the rolling clicks of recollections and emotion. I know that the flimsy replays of our minds can plays tricks on a willing man: their visions are effortlessly capable of pulling into focus vibrant recollections of something that was in fact altogether normal. I am aware thsat memory strips away hunger, fatigue, nerves and boredom and leaves you with only the deeper ebbs of emotion. But that is not what I am talking of right now, not what I experience when these places revisit me and I them. I can only say again that they are within me. I can only say in finality that it is not an earnest slideshow of my memory that I experience. It is instead the truth that I carry with me weightless fragments of the tired cities of my travels, I breath the opaque vapours of tales told to me in rooms long emptied, I walk to the beat of the un-ceasing pulse of hidden pastures clustered high in lonely mountain ranges, I lie at night with the weight of rotten roads and aching buildings weighing me into sleep. I have all this and more buried deep inside of me. I feel some places more than others, I feel more for some than others, but I feel them all at sometime. They are latent and patient and then suddenly, startled into life and urgency. Triggered by the smaller tracts and slivers of emotion that are there in the everyday, if you feel them enough. A lonely familiar walk is interuppted by the rolling minor piano chords from a half heard song. Those notes are heard, are felt and then they shift and fall through my senses, twisting themselves itself into the cracked pavements of a deserted street and onece more I am in Sarajevo and Sarajevo is in me. For those moments, for as long as I feel those piano chords I also feel the weave and warp of the door frames that lined that street, that begged for their old lives. I can feel the cool air of the abandoned rooms, I can feel the loss of those tired places. Those rooms and those walls became me at sometime and it feels as if they will never leave. Maybe as I pulled myself up and into the stairwells and corridors something fractured and embedded itself under my skin? Maybe the dust that floated in those rooms coalesced as it was inhaled; gathering somewhere beyond physiology to become something of me? Maybe none of this is true, but they are within me nonetheless. At other times life interrupts, radio static cracks and falters; dying analogue flaws amidst all this digital clarity. With each hiss and abrasion the sensation of jolting movement, of the past growing into form and I am a cooling sky high in the Caucasus Mountains: immediately around me would be the creaking frame of a wooden porch; the structure of that long gone moment. But it is not there that is lost inside me, it is not the truth of that place that I have carried home. No, it is that pallid sky that bowls across the mountain valley that I begin to breathe. It is Mount Kazbegi’s cragged black shard that cuts into that sky that I feel solidifying in my chest. It is the serene silhouette of the Mt Sameba church perched high in the folds of that very same mountain and that very same sky that calms me as it takes its place and form. It is the distance and mystery of places left behind that I have absorbed, it is the pitch and emotion, the anxiety and the apathy funny faces for auntie mcb A shiny and v. safe metal plank doubles as a very short wall-mount mirror. The kids demonstrated how they could check faces and hands after washing at the (oojieboojie) mini industrial sink, toddler height and completely adorable like the miniatures in doll houses. ATHENS, Ga. 4.15.05 Alicia Pinckney, the costume designer for “Pippin,” showed each actor how to apply makeup and style his or her hair during a workshop on the Friday before the show opened. On the night of each production, actors will be expected to create his or her own look. Here she works with Megan Doyle, a junior from Miami, Fla., who plays Fastrada, one of the lead roles. She has her own musical number called “Spread a Little Sunshine,” and played the Nurse in University Theatre’s production of “Antigone” last season.
