Hiking Light Handbook (Backpacker Magazine)

Hiking Light Handbook (Backpacker Magazine)

New entry in the Backpacker magazine series: Practical, reasonable strategies for everyone who'd like to lighten their load on the trail.
*Written by a former contributing editor for Backpacker Magazine
*How to pick and choose light hiking strategies to fit your needs and hiking style
*Light hiking is one of the biggest trends in backpacking today
Lightweight hiking strategies apply to everyone, says master hiker Karen Berger: the less weight you have on your back, the more comfortable you'll be on the trail whether you're hiking five miles or five hundred. She's not talking about extreme strategies (such as cutting the handle off your toothbrush to save a few ounces). It's all about evaluating and analyzing what you carry, whether you truly need it and really use it.
Berger helps you strike a balance between comfort on the trail versus comfort in camp. Always, the emphasis is on hiking wisely--and safely.

Yup, I take all of this with me on each of our hikes, you never know when you'll need it, and the 500mm is especially useful out in the wild. The backpack is very comfy, so you hardly notice the weight :)

The Ultralight Backpacker : The Complete Guide to Simplicity and Comfort on the Trail

Developed primarily for long-distance treks, the ultralight method is considered by many traditional backpackers as too austere. Author Ryel Kestenbaum shows that thanks to recent improvements in equipment design and manufacture, as well as in food processing, ultralight backpacking now offers a safe and comfortable alternative to traditional backpacking methods. In The Ultralight Backpacker, he dispels the myths surrounding this rapidly growing trend. Kestenbaum acquaints readers with the ultralight philosophy and shows how backpackers can once and for all do away with heavy packs and move quickly and comfortably on the trail, whether on a day-trip or season-long trek. He also provides the most complete survey available of ultralight equipment, clothing, and footwear, along with tips on how to select the right gear for each reader’s unique interests, needs, and personality.

Tom Carey

Tom Carey

Just a few years ago I upgraded my bow equipment getting a new Hoyt Trykon
and while at the store I was commenting on the tree stands that they had on
display and how they were no better than sitting on a 5 gallon bucket for
comfort. The shop owner pointed me to some Millennium stands that he had
still in the box. He took one out for me to look at and when I saw the Cam
and receiver design for ease of hanging I liked it. He let me take it
outside of his shop and put it on a tree to see how it felt. I was hooked
right then. I knew I could be in this stand all day long and not have my but
fall asleep and it was silent and I couldn't make it tip or be unstable as
hard as I tried there on that tree. I went in and bought it immediately.
In the years since I have been able to sit all day weather bow or rifle
hunting, in fact it is more comfortable than the chairs at home or in the
hunting cabin.

Well this year I decided to hunt in the Chequamegon National forest in an
area that I had not bow hunted before. Years ago there was a deer that
roamed this area, I was going to hunt, that everyone in the area called
Bigfoot, as many had seen him crossing the road at night and all agreed he
was a monster. Well I figured that some of his offspring had to be in this
area so I scouted during the spring and found an area, I liked. That fall I
set up in an area I was sure the deer would be coming though along the side
of a ridge. The first night I saw nothing but I the rut was on here in
Wisconsin so I knew I had to as the add says "Just sit down and shut up". I
spent two more full days in this stand with nothing. I began to doubt my
stand placement but on the 4th day just before closing I heard the tell tail
sound of branches hitting the antlers of a deer. I looked in that direction
and then I saw the deer sneaking through the brush. He got downwind of me
and stopped looking in my directions. I could see he had horns but not how
many or how big they were he was about 80 yrds away. The past two days I had
been spraying in the air 2 pumps of Knight and Hales synthetic doe in heat
every hour on the hour and just letting the scent move through the air. I
was sure that this buck had just come from being locked down with another
doe and was looking for the source of this scent. His horns were so dark
against the marshy timber that he was coming through that I couldn't tell
how wide or how tall he was. As he came right below my stand I tried to
draw but I couldn't. I was so cold from sitting there all day. I tried
again and finally came to full draw. I put the pin on his chest as has his
head was behind a tree and let fly. I saw my lumenok disappear right were I
had put the pin, the deer turned and tore off were he had come from.
Stopping briefly out in the marshy timber before running again. I knew I
had made a good shot so I got down and immediately started to track the deer
as light was fading fast. He went about 125 yards and I found him
collapsed on a logging trail with his legs under him. When I hit him with
the flash light I was overjoyed as I figured he was just a basket racked 8
pt. There was no ground shrinkage on this deer. The I was able to go get my
truck and drive to within 40 yards of the deer as I new where the logging
trail that this deer had fallen on came out to the main road.

I wouldn't have ever been able to hunt that many hours using any of the
other stands that I have had throughout the years they just were not
comfortable for the long haul of serious bow hunting.

I now have 2 T-100 hang on stands and recommend them to everyone who is
considering them.. As I tell them "What is a comfortable pair of boots
worth? Would you buy an uncomfortable pair of boots just because they are
$25 dollars cheaper. Why, you will not want to use them, and the stand is
meant to be used."

Thanks for truly bringing comfort to the woods.
Tom Carey

Here are some of the bucks I have taken off a Millennium Stand, the one
without snow is the one that the story is about..

This room is insanely large. The ceiling is a cathedral ceiling which makes the space feel even larger. The ceiling fan helps cool down the apartment. We barely used the heater during the winter. Now that it's starting to warm up, we just open the door and windows and turn on this fan and the apartment stays cool.

The door/balcony looks out to the park/recreation area on the apartment complex property. We find this particular location extremely beautiful and peaceful.

We use our trundle twin bed as our couch. We've also placed our dining table in front of the large sliding door. That way, we can eat in front of the tv or the beautiful scenery.

The carpet is one and a half years old. It's in great condition. Best I've ever seen at an apartment (and I've lived in 5).

**We're looking for someone to take over our lease. We signed it in January 2011, so the lease is up Jan 2012, but you have the option to renew the lease. Our rent is $689. It's supposed to be $719, but hey, we got a deal. Dogs and cats are allowed.

They have a basketball court (just fixed up), a tennis court, a swimming pool and a fitness center. They just got new equipment in a month ago, but we haven't gone to see the new stuff yet. They also have a dvd library where you can borrow movies, but we've never checked that out before.

This apartment is one of the three newest to the complex. There are more older family type residents that live in our building, so we've never had a problem with our neighbors. They're pretty friendly. We've also never had a problem with the management, but we try to stay away from any trouble as much as possible. We've placed probably three or four work orders and each have been taken care of within a day. The maintenance guys (or at least the ones that have helped us) are really friendly.

This highly effective tool for the management of interference problems in electronic equipment treats the fundamentals of electrostatics as they relate to electromagnetic phenomena. Specifically, this volume deals with the new interference problems created when analog designs are buried in the middle of hardware that must meet radiation and susceptibility standards. It features:
* Effective techniques for handling noise problems in a variety of circumstances
* Step-by-step instructions for building noise-free instrument systems
* Strategies for reducing or eliminating noise in interconnecting systems
* Expanded discussion of multishielded transformers
* An overview of current trends to limit the use of transformers
* Real-world examples of factors influencing electronic noise
* Simplified, practical explanations of the physics of fields
* Dozens of illustrations and a clear, readable text.

Grounding and Shielding Techniques, Fourth Edition is a state-of-the-art problem-solving guide for electronic design engineers and technicians. It is also an extremely useful text for short courses on electronic noise.

R.I.P. Bobby Harvey Local 7 Victim of Goliath

R.I.P. Bobby Harvey Local 7 Victim of Goliath

QUINCY - A massive support leg of a 30-story-tall crane once used to build ships collapsed yesterday as it was being dismantled at Fore River Shipyard, killing a 28-year-old iron worker.
It was the third death in three years resulting from a crane failure at the shipyard.

Four other ironworkers suffered minor injuries when the support leg gave way beneath the crane, nicknamed Goliath, which has loomed over the shipyard for 33 years. Authorities identified the worker as Robert Harvey, a Quincy native who recently married and moved to Weymouth.

"This is just a very sad day here in Quincy," Norfolk District Attorney William R. Keating said during an afternoon press conference at the shipyard. "It's a sad day when a landmark has become a tragic memorial."

The ironworkers were preparing to remove the support leg as part of a larger effort to dismantle the crane, which was to be ferried to a shipbuilding company in Romania and put to work beside the Black Sea.

"It did collapse in the manner it was designed to collapse," Quincy Fire Chief Joseph Barron said at the press conference. "It just did not collapse when it was supposed to, obviously."

The collapse did not affect the structural stability of the rest of the crane, Barron said.

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration dispatched three inspectors to the scene. The federal inspectors are trying to determine the cause of the collapse and whether any workplace safety rules were violated by the workers or companies involved, OSHA spokesman Ted Fitzgerald said. The investigation could take several months to complete, he said.

Family members and co-workers gathered yesterday afternoon outside the Quincy home where Harvey grew up. "He was just a great son," said the victim's father, Robert Harvey. "Just a great son."

At the home where he lived with his wife in Weymouth, Kim Harvey, who is married to a cousin of the victim, said he was a big hockey fan who had graduated from Quincy High School.

"He was just a really caring and giving and sweet person, always there to help someone," she said.

She said that he and his wife married about two years ago. The couple had no children.

Harvey's fellow ironworkers were "very traumatized by this, very moved," Keating said. "Our sympathies extend not only to the family, but to what is obviously a close-knit group of co-workers."

Many of them stood outside the gates of the shipyard, waiting for news.

On the ironworkers union website, there was a posting about Harvey. "Bobby was highly regarded, supremely talented, and his presence will be sorely missed," it said.

The collapse of the support leg sent an enormous thud echoing throughout the neighborhood.
"I was vacuuming, and then I heard a loud boom," said Lisa Crowley, 41, who lives nearby. "I knew something was not right, because I heard it over my vacuum."

Quincy police and firefighters responded to a flood of 911 calls that began at 12:26 p.m. Two of the four injured ironworkers were taken to Quincy Medical Center, where they were treated and released. The other two were treated at the scene.

Standing outside the shipyard, Don Gauthier said he spent 22 years working at Fore River, many of them as a crane supervisor. Over the years, he said, the shipyard helped build 12 liquefied natural gas tankers.

Gauthier said he had been watching how the crane was dismantled and had been concerned about the decision to take it apart from the bottom up. "It's a shame. They should have taken the main girder off first and then removed the support beams," Gauthier said. "Personally, I don't think they went about it in the right way."

Gregory Nordholm of Norsar LLC, the Washington state-based company that was hired to dismantle and move the crane, said he was about 15 feet away from the 370-foot crane when it collapsed. The work crew was preparing the crane so it could be lowered closer to the ground, he said. The plan was to lower it 80 feet today.

"I don't know exactly what happened," he said.

It appeared to be part of the leg of the crane that initially failed, he said. "That leg section landed right on him and killed him instantly."

Nordholm said he did not know the cause of the failure.

"We're determined to figure out what happened and why it happened, so this doesn't ever happen again," he said. "The crane is safe and secure now."

The crews stopped working on the crane and will not resume until investigators determine what occurred, he said.

Nordholm said that in addition to OSHA, the Quincy Building Department is also investigating.

Investigators from the state Department of Public Safety were at the scene yesterday to check the crane operator's licensing, according to spokesman Terrel Harris.

"It's early and preliminary, but they haven't found any problem with the op

Got problems with bad results from the Game boy Printer? Its probably not the printer that is damaged as you first might think, its the thermal paper that is old!

I bought a "new" unopened box of the official Nintendo thermal paper and the result was really bad. So my guess is that the paper has really passed its expire date witch caused the bad print, after all it was made in 1998!
So i went to a cafe and a pizzeria and bought some stuff and saved the receipts, cut it with a scissor and tested it in the game boy printer, the results where really good!

Oh and btw if you wonder how i got that "Hello!" text to print, simply hold the red "feed" button down and switch on the power to make it do a test print.

1995 Geo Tracker Turbo intercooled

1995 Geo Tracker Turbo intercooled

The Turbo Tracker, a work in progress. I began this project with the goal of increasing power for mostly highway use. It was fine off road, but the added weight of the off road equipment, coupled with the oversized tires left it sorely lacking in hill and passing power. I'd already lowered the overall gearing by swapping in the 5.13 gearsets from a manual trans Sidekick ( This Tracker is an auto originally equipped with 4.30 gearsets), but it still needed more power. I also wanted it to be reliable and everyday usuable so peaky race derived cams and other hot rod tricks were out. After doing some research, the solution came in the form of FORCED INDUCTION.

I played around with the idea of supercharging, especially since it would produce more low end power, but the engineering was too complicated . The answer was Turbocharging. Unfortunetly, nothing was available for this vehicle in the way of kits so virtually everything had to be fabricated from scratch. Initially, I spent weeks researching turbocharging on the net, in books and on the Zukiworld forum ( Thanks a bunch to Darrin/ AKA Wild) before coming up with a plan. Lots of metal dust and scraps were created in the process. I also donated some hair, skin and blood to the build. It was all worth it.

The turbo Tracker runs beautifully, with plenty of power to spare. I've been driving it for almost 6 months now, and have most of the minor wrinkles worked out. It starts, idles, and drives normally, that is to say like a stocker, until you give it just a little bit of encouragement. As soon as you put your foot in it , your on boost and accelerating the way no overweight, over tired, and undergeared Tracker should. As an added bonus, the Turbo actually works in off road situations as well, especially when in 4WD low, where the RPM's are higher However, I did experience some engine compartment heat related problems.

Towing my small trailer with my rock crawling wheels and tires or my camper through the mountains, those mountain grades meant I was on boost for long periods. The Tracker pulled the grades without a problem, even being able to accelerate up the long grades! The build up of heat under the hood was causing some problems though, eventually melting my distributer cap into somthing resembling a Salvidor Dali sculpture. The heat also deformed my plastic master cylinder reseviour. In order to vent the heat build up in the engine compartment, I installed a set of hood louvers. A 6" electric fan was attached to the underside of the vent directly above the turbo. I got a marine bildge fan from a local marine supply ($13) and cut a 3" hole in the top of the fender well on the passenger side. Cool outside air is drawn in via the hole in the fender well, and blown directly in to the vunerable areas. Both fans are controlled from a dash mounted switch and do great job of cooling and venting the engine compartment.

As an added precaution, I made up some heat sheilding to go around the exhaust manifold and turbo,( covered with heat reflective material) and I wrapped the upper portion of the manifold with commonly available header wrap. The engine compartment now stays safely cool. Some of these mods are probably overkill, but I have not experienced any heat related problems since.

Update Feb 23rd 2007: The Turbo Tracker passed New Jersey State emmisions testing registering lower overall exhaust emissions than it did stock.

Update, Dec 17th 2007. It's been about 1 year since I installed the turbo and it hasn't been without some problems. First, my manifold developed a crack near the top of the collecter, due to vibration and the weight of the turbo. I repaired the crack, and added some bracing to control vibes and help support the turbo better. That seems to have taken care of that problem. Second, the turbo itself started to leak oil into both the turbine and compressor sides, causing some smoking on trailing throttle, or when backing off the gas after a hard run on boost. This problem was traced to an omition of a bypass air valve that I should have included in the charge air lines during the build. The oil problem never surfaced during normal driving, and only began during a cross country trip, towing my camper through the mountains. After quite a long time on boost, climbing long mountain grades, sometimes being on boost for 5 or more minutes, and having to back out of the throttle rapidly after cresting a hill, or to slow for traffic, the build up of pressure in the charge air lines had no where to go, and caused the turbine rotors to basicly stop and reverse direction almost instantly. This in turn pressurized the internal cavity of the turbo, forceing oil out past the seals, and into the compressor and turbine, where it got sucked into the intake, or poured into the exhaust system. It didn't cause any real damage to the motor, other than oiling the inside of my exhaust system and stinking a bit, and smoking as it burned the inhal

through the jungle

through the jungle

The Kilimanjaro climb begins in jungle, some of which is pretty thick, as you can see here.

We were a party of eight doing the trek, Marie and myself plus two friends and an American and an English couple. The guy in this shot is Chris, an American who signed up for the trip at the last minute.
When we arrived at the start point the clearing was full of Tanzanian guys and lots of gear and food scattered all over the place. We wondered what they were doing there until we discovered they were our porters and all this stuff was for us. You cannot climb Kilimanjaro without a guide (the rules of the national park) and while we had two fantastic guides in Felix and Edward I didn't really expect to see so many supplementary guys who would be carrying the gear up the mountain. These guys carry VERY big loads (tents, cooking equipment, food) and often with the minimum of their own equipment - we had our stout hillwalking boots, they had flipflops. Nice warm fleeces for us at night, they had a kagoul if they were lucky. It did make me feel a bit uncomfortable having folk do all this heavy lugging for us, just so we could have our adventure holiday, but Felix did point out that having a job as a porter was a pretty big deal for them - they had an income from this and were pretty well paid for the job. Having said this, not all tour companies are as rigorous at ensuring porters are paid properly. We used a company called Gane and Marshall who have a proper policy for their porters and guides. At the end of the climb, when we got back down off the mountain, we gave a lot of our clothing away to the porters - fleeces, hats, gloves, waterproofs, stuff that we could easily replace when we got home.

The climb starts off in jungle, moves on to scrub land as you get higher, then into volcanic ash and bouldery scree and finally glaciers and snow on the summit crater rim - four temperate zones in the one trek.

Lawn Jockey - Full pic

Lawn Jockey - Full pic

A lawn jockey, also commonly known as a "Yardell". is a small statue of a man in jockey clothes, intended to be placed in yards. A popular lawn ornament in years past, in certain parts of the US, was a cast replica, usually about half-scale, of a man dressed in jockey's clothing and holding up one hand as though taking the reins of a horse. The hand sometimes carries a lantern.

It is said that the 'lawn jockey' actually has its roots in the tale of one Jocko Graves, an African-American boy who served with General George Washington at the time that he crossed the Delaware to carry out his surpise attack on British forces at Trenton, NJ. The General thought him too young to take along on such a dangerous attack, so left him on the Pennsylvania side to tend to the horses and to keep a light on the bank for their return. So the story goes, the boy, faithful to his post and his orders, froze to death on the river bank during the night, the lantern still in his hand. The General was so much moved by the boy's devotion to his duty that he had a statue sculpted and cast of him, holding the lantern, and had it installed at his Mount Vernon estate. No records exist to support any of this story and it is likely revisionist folklore. There is a collectibles market for these items.

There are typically two traditional lawn jockey styles that are produced, commonly known as "jocko" and "cavalier spirit". Typically these statues are made of concrete but are also made of other materials such as Poly Resin and aluminum or cast iron.

Our hike up Longs Peak with Catherine Jones, 15, sophomore, Niwot High and her friend Hannah Biddle, 14, Niwot High, and me, Curtis Jones, 51, Old Geezer, started “normal”. To avoid thunderstorms, we started up the dark trail at 4am with flashlights in hand. Being the age that they are, the ladies (I call them ladies rather than girls after this trip) were still asleep the first couple of miles. As we left the trees and the sun poked up through the Twin Sisters, both girls, usually preoccupied with texting on their phones and worried about their looks, were truly amazed at the majestic beauty around them and continued to be amazed as we saw Longs Peak from the Boulder field and went through the “keyhole” to see what arguably is the best mountain view in the world. Something about the grandeur of it all is good for the soul. As we climbed our way to the top of the trough, stopping about every 15 feet to gasp for air, we wondered WHEN we would get to the top. Shortly, we hit “the narrows”, a scary ledge with a huge drop off. Something stopped us there. Having done Longs before alone, my somewhat overprotective nature kicked in and I told the girls that if they wanted to continue, we could but there would be no shame in turning around – they had made it to 13,900 feet and seen the most beautiful views anyway. Normally, I believe they would have gone but something in both of them said it was time to head down. That decision probably saved us. Except for a cut finger and a fall on a tailbone, the trip down the very steep trough, through the keyhole, and partway down the boulder field was “uneventful” even though extreme attention must be paid on this section of the hike or it quickly ends up “eventful”. As we exited the boulder field, we felt a few drops of rain. Looking back at Longs Peak, a dark cloud hung over the peak. It popped up out of nowhere. We worried about the people still behind us. Quickly, the drops of rain turned into a downpour and Mother Nature added hail to the mix. The trial was completely full of water – attempts to sidestep the stream quickly turned into walking right through it because the rocks and grass beside the trail were too slippery to walk on. The temperature dropped probably 30 degrees, there was a wind, even rain gear was soaked and mother nature decided to add on lightning and thunder, several bolts which hit 200 yards from us (while we were walking in 6” of water). My previous explanations of the conditions can never convey how hard things were – as both Catherine and Hannah would say as we sat in Hannah’s hot tub that evening enjoying the little things that we didn’t appreciate before having a life threatening/changing experience like that one – “why tell anyone? They simply wouldn’t understand”. And the conditions were hard. We were barely surviving. All of us had to fight to move because we were soaked and cold, hypothermia was setting in, the hail hurt badly is it pelted our faces, heads, and hands. In my 51 years of life, I have never been that scared. Every other hiker we walked by asked if we were OK, all agreed that they had just had a life changing experience. Catherine and Hannah were unbelievable. When conditions were at their worst and I was very worried about these two young teenagers in front of me and how they would react, their true tenacious characters surfaced. Several times, both girls would look back to make sure I was still with them and when I started to fall back a bit because my legs would stiffen, both girls would give me a look like “you get your butt up here old geezer or we will start dating boys you don’t want us to date”. Later I found out that they were as scared as I was. Having such an experience, an experience many people will never experience in their lives, at such a young age matured them beyond their physical years and showed me what they are made of. I think they will handle what life throws at them well. Even though we were more prepared than most for Longs, we weren’t prepared enough. Partially waterproof equipment isn’t enough. But sometimes having all the equipment isn’t enough – not much could have helped us if one of those lightening bolts had hit 200 yards closer. We are just happy to be alive and worried about the people who were behind us and still on the steep parts of the hike. And the little irritations in life that occasionally get us down? We have better perspectives now. Like all bad things, there is some good … the bond I have with my daughter just got a lot stronger. We survived together. Sometimes, most of the time, tee

Dragon Dreams

Dragon Dreams

Drakolimni (= Dragon lake) is the name of several alpine or sub-alpine lakes in northwestern Greece Epirus periphery. According to local folktales the lakes used to be inhabited by dragons that fought each other by throwing pines and rocks and thus created the peculiar landscape and gave their names to the lakes. Drakolimni of Tymfi resides at an altitude of 2100m above sea level, on the mountain range of Tymfi and is inhabited by a species of alpine newt, called drakakia by the locals. According to local sources, the newts' resemblance to small dragons gives the lake its distinctive name.

…and this was my most difficult capture to get. Not to capture, but to reach that sliver of paradise we had to go through a kind of hell. To set things straight, when I say WE I mean WE. Most people traveling light, with only their clothes in their backpacks or with no backpacks at all reach that place in 5 hours of fairly easy uphill track (or even less, we met people that jogged that track just for fun). Well, let me give you the version of two mildly to seriously out of shape and heavily packed photographers carrying with them all of their photographic equipment (to talk with numbers that’s translated to 25 kilos for male photographer *KirlianCamera and 15 kilos for female photographer me –that’s just a little less than one third of my weight)...

Alarm clock set at 7.30 am, arrival at the nearest village at 9.00am. We saddle up and start walking. First half hour is a mere torture to me as what starts as a merely annoying pain at my right shoulder becomes a stab real fast. I keep fumbling and messing with my backback straps, tightening some and loosening up some until I find a comfortable combination at last. We carry on panting laboriously, tongues lolling out of our mouths; we do innumerable stops to catch our breath and I use each of these stops to munch enthusiastically through our supplies of food not because I’m hungry but because I want to lighten up my burden. Fortunately at some point the carbohydrates I have consumed kick in and I feel much better, find a reasonable pace and 6 hours later we reach the refuge and collapse on the front porch unable to shoo away the horses that come to greet us, sniff, lick and nibble at our bags. After a hot drink and a tasty dinner we sleep like logs.

That was not the end, the lake still lay ahead of us and we set off to explore it and time ourselves on the next morning. Stop clock verdict: 2 hours. Which means that since we want a sunrise at the land of the dragons we wake up at 3.30am, leave by 4.00 am, snow sparkling like diamond dust under our headlights, moon shining behind the peak of Astraka, mildly worried about wolves and bears waiting for their nicely wrapped up in isothermal clothes take-away breakfast. We reach the lake in our usual, unbecoming fashion (panting laboriously, tongues hanging out of our mouths etc etc) just in time to catch the first light touching the peaks before it was snuffed out by a heavy cloud right behind us.

Do I dare do it again? H E L L, Y E S!!!

JOIDES Resolution

JOIDES Resolution

A really "cool" ship! “JOIDES” stands for Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling. The name reflects the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program's (IODP) commitment to the science of exploring what lies beneath the ocean floor... “Resolution” honors an earlier ship, the HMS Resolution, commanded more than 200 years ago by Capt. James Cook, who explored the Pacific and Antarctic regions. Around the ship, in the lab and during on-shore operations, crew and staff refer to the JOIDES Resolution affectionately as The JR.

Data from the JR's ocean drilling offers a scientific means of understanding climate and environmental change throughout a significant part of our planet’s history—often termed Earth's paleoclimate. The JR’s core samples are the “smoking gun” in evaluating many historical events related to paleoclimate, changes in the solid earth and more -- like the extinction of the dinosaurs.

From 2006-2008, The JR was completely retrofitted with exciting new scientific drillling equipment, new structural improvements and significant upgrades. It is almost a whole new ship!

Work aboard the research vessel never ceases; operations continue 24 hours a day. JOIDES Resolution’s complement can consist of 50 scientists and technicians and 65 crew members. The crew consists of marine professionals and ocean drilling specialists, among others. The JR’s science party is specific to each mission, with skills and science disciplines chosen especially to best achieve the mission’s goals.

Jennifer Steinkamp: "Daisy Bell" @ Lehmann Maupin

Jennifer Steinkamp:

in one of her most significant installations to date, the Los Angeles-based artist utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to wed her projections to the dramatic architecture of the gallery, dematerializing the space and creating an eerie environment.

The title, Daisy Bell, refers to a particular moment in the history of science and culture: in 1962, Bell Labs used the IBM 704 to synthesize the popular 19th-century English song of the same name. The song was also used in the climactic scene of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey in which the supercomputer HAL 9000 begins to sing Daisy, Daisy as his consciousness is degraded.

Steinkamp's Daisy Bell series is comprised of a variety of poisonous flowers that appear to cascade down the gallery walls. Much as Bell Lab's Daisy Bell consisted of a human application reinterpreting nature, Steinkamp reprises the idea, and defines this new series of artwork by its relationship to human innovations.

This is the story of how the most famous vegetarian in the world came to sponsor the world's only vegetarian professional sporting team. Hear about how a small-time British outfit grew so quickly they elbowed their way into the Tour of Italy, and then delve into the mystery of how a team personally funded and endorsed by one of the world's richest men could dissolve into thin air virtually overnight, millions in the red.
