Tranquility

Tranquility

When I was staying in Yangshuo at the Holland Inn which was an old farmers house turned into a mini hotel I rented a bike and drove for 4 hrs. I am not sure how I made it back but lets just say 2 weeks later my ass is still killing me. The one thing I noticed while biking on a dirt raod along the river was the amount of chinese tourists on the river on bamboo rafts. It was inane where I could not even take pictures as I felt it was ugly, I can also imagine the strain on the river with so many boats and people on it everyday!!! When I went there 12 years ago everything was so pure and clean but today my heart bleeds for this natural beauty of land. I was lucky to get couple of shots with no tourists on the water from the Dragon Bridge, Yangshuo.

This is Holland!

This is Holland!

Sunday we went on another adventure. This time to Heusden here in Holland. It’s a fortified little town, adjacent to the Maas river. It’s surroundings looks like a fort, the way it’s landscaped etc. And they have loads of windmills and little bays where you can park your yaught (little harbours). Such a pretty place! Photo taken by my hubby ;)

Cinderella's Castle

Cinderella's Castle

Cinderella Castle is the iconic fairy-tale fortress that serves as the gateway to Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom theme park. It is not only one of the central icons of Walt Disney World Resort, but its romantic beauty has also come to represent all of the Walt Disney Company.

The castle is located in the heart of Magic Kingdom theme park—just above the central hub of the Park. Many Guests catch their first glimpse of the castle from Main Street, U.S.A. When you first see the soaring spires, ornate turrets and shimmering moat, you know you've left the world of today and entered a magical new land full of fun and fantasy.

While it may be initially startling to see a medieval castle rising 190 feet into the sky at the end of a street right out of classic small-town America, the dream-like magic of the contrasting images captures the promise of the enchanted adventures awaiting you.

Step inside Cinderella Castle, and it's like you're walking into a fairy tale come true. The castle is as beautiful inside as it is on the outside. Inspect an amazingly detailed mosaic mural—including tiles made of real 14-karat gold—and enjoy vignettes from the 1950 Disney animated classic, Cinderella. The mural contains one million pieces of glass in approximately 500 different colors.

Also inside the castle, families are invited to dine like royalty at Cinderella's Royal Table.

Inspirations for Cinderella Castle

A variety of real and fictional castles served as inspiration for Cinderella Castle—including Fontainebleau, Versailles and the chateaus of Chenonceau, Chambord and Chaumont. The chief designer of Cinderella Castle, Disney Legend Herb Ryman, also referenced the original design for the castle in the film Cinderella and his own well-known creation—Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park in California.

Views Beyond the Magic Kingdom Berm

Guests lucky enough to be staying at one of the Resort hotels surrounding the Seven Seas Lagoon—Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa—can enjoy views of Cinderella Castle from the grounds of their Resort, and in some select cases, even from their rooms.

If you've ever wanted to end the perfect day with the perfect final vision of fireworks exploding above Cinderella Castle, be sure to ask for a Disney Resort Hotel room with a view of the castle when making your reservations. It's an experience you will treasure forever!

Albergo Pietrasanta

Albergo Pietrasanta

Albergo Pietrasanta is located in the historical centre of the artistic town of Pietrasanta, a few kilometers from Pisa and Lucca. A grand sixteenth century palazzo, formerly known as the Barsanti-Bonetti, has been transformed into a quaint hotel with 20 luxury rooms, 3 suites and 8 junior suites. The guest rooms and public spaces have been designed to respect and enhance the character of the ancient palazzo, often incorporating and preserving features such as frescoed ceilings. Contemporary art works are displayed in staircases, lounges, and conference rooms, creating a comfortable atmosphere reminiscent of a fine private home, but coupled with the fastidious service of a first class hotel. A lovely veranda, facing landscaped gardens faced into gardens with century-old trees, connects the main building to adjacent converted stables and provides a peaceful setting to have a quiet conversation or read book.Located in the heart of Tuscany, the town of Pietrasanta is a convenient destination for the traveler eager to explore the artistic and architectural treasures of the region - Take off for a morning excursion and visit the world-renowned Renaissance architecture of Pisa and Lucca. Have lunch in Florence. Tour the marble quarries of Michelangelo. Take a day trip to Portofino, Cinque Terre, the beaches of Versilia, or to the exclusive shops at Forte dei Marmi. Pietrasanta has been a well-kept secret among art aficionados for years. In addition to its convenient location, the town has quiet a few charms of its own: spend time meandering through the medieval square, discovering the town's monuments, visiting the workshops of the local artisans, or luxuriating in the surrounding landscape. Whether looking for a holiday of art, beach, or sun, Pietrsanta is a destination point for the discriminating visitor.

Rome - West from Spanish Steps

Rome - West from Spanish Steps

This photo was taken one year ago tomorrow, the second full day of our Italy-Switzerland trip. I took many photos in Rome and Tuscany, but shortly after arriving in Switzerland my camera gear and nearly a thousand photos from 10 days in Italy were stolen. Ruth Ann kindly told me to make a copy of her Italy photos to edit as I see fit, and she insisted that I use her camera in Switzerland; aside from a few of my Swiss photos, though, I have not been in the mood to work with photos from that trip. But after a year, it's time to really accept that my photos are forever gone. We both think I took this picture, but we're not sure. I took only the 24-105mm lens, while Ruth Ann had a 17-85mm on her camera, so when I wanted a wider view I used her camera; we wrote in a notebook the image numbers that were mine, but the notebook was among the stolen items.

This was taken in front of Trinita dei Monti at the top of the Spanish Steps (next photo). The Spanish Steps were built 1723-25 to link the church on Pincio Hill with Piazza di Spagna at the foot of the hill. There are 138 steps and the staircase is said to be the widest in Europe (nearly 300 years later, I didn't hear any creaking!). The azaleas (in large pots/planters) were at their peak and added greatly to the beauty of the scene. Does anyone know if they are rotated with other planters, so that summer and fall also benefit from a beautiful floral display?

Rome is full of churches, many with domes. The large dome in the center of the image is that of the Church of Sts. Ambrogio and Carlo; the gabled facade with the oval window in front of the dome is part of that church, as well. The church was built during the 17th century, with the dome being completed in 1668-69 and the facade in 1690. To the right behind the Ambrogio and Carlo dome is the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City; one of the smaller domes of St. Peter's can be made out, as well, on the right side of the main dome.

We had the afternoon of April 28 through early afternoon of April 30 on our own in Rome, before joining a Trafalgar tour to Tuscany that started in Rome. April 29, we walked literally all day, into the evening hours, taking in the sights (and some gelato!) of old Rome; our hotel made the walking distances easy. We'd love to return, with more time in each place; another time, I may chain my camera to me.

Information is from various online sources and the Eyewitness Tavel Italy guidebook (DK, 2010).

Rimini

Stortorget, Old Town, Stockholm - December 2010

Stortorget, Old Town, Stockholm - December 2010

Stortorget (Grand Square), Gamla stan (Old Town).
The annual Advent market, with selling booths from all over Sweden, carrying local foods and beverages like the Glogg (a mixture of red wine and spices; 15% alc.), which is something of a Swedish specialty.

The old town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.
Stortorget is the name of the scenic large square in the center of Gamla Stan, which is surrounded by old merchants' houses including the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building. The square was the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath, where Swedish noblemen were massacred by the Danish King Christian II in November, 1520. The following revolt and civil war led to the dissolution of the Kalmar Union and the subsequent election of King Gustav I.
As well as being home to the Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Museum, and the Riddarholm church, Gamla stan also boasts Kungliga slottet, Sweden's baroque Royal Palace, built in the 18th century after the previous palace Tre Kronor burned down.
The restaurant ''Den gyldene freden'', located on Osterlanggatan has been in business since 1722. According to the Guinness Book of Records it is the oldest existing restaurant with an unaltered interior.

Office, Rainbow Motel, Truro Nova Scotia

Office, Rainbow Motel, Truro Nova Scotia

We decided to head back towards Halifax without a clear plan of where to stay. The Lord nelson wasn't that great and it was expensive but staying in Antigonish meant a long drive back in the morning when I'd rather be sleeping and/or drinking coffee.

So, we decided to head towards Truro which was most of the way there. There was a Howard Johnsons with free wifi and decent rates but we kept driving up and down the street it was supposed to be on, only to find that it was closed, possibly forever, being remodeled, something. We saw the sign for the Rainbow Motel (free wifi!) and were pleased to find a nice comfy room and a nice manager guy who let me take a picture of the old switchboard that was at the motel when he started working there. Apparently it worked when he first started. He said "you ladies are too young to remember Laugh In, but I used to love Lily Tomlin do that 'one ringy dingy' bit" We assured him we'd both seen it.

We're happy at the Rainbow Motel in Truro.

Salisbury - English Wine

Salisbury - English Wine

I ate at the White Hart Hotel while I was in Salisbury. The dining room had English wine on the menu. I tried it, enjoyed it, and drank it with two or three dinners. It is rather like Mosel wine. It comes from a town near Hastings, in southeast England. The label calls it "English table wine." Perhaps English wine did not have sufficient pedigree at that time to allow higher classifications. This photo is "geotagged" with the location of the vineyard. Click on MAP at lower right.

Villa Roma Motor Hotel, San Francisco 1963

Villa Roma Motor Hotel, San Francisco 1963

Promoted as “San Francisco’s Most Elegant Motor Hotel,” the Villa Roma opened around 1962 in the city’s North Beach district. The Villa Roma, once located at 1212 Columbus Ave., offered the utmost in modern furnishings, a view with every room, and a fabulous cocktail lounge. Alas, the Villa Roma disappeared in the 1990s, only to be replaced by a mega-Marriott Hotel.

I have an old Villa Roma postcard, postmarked June 7, 1962. On the back, the hand-written message begins... "this is the motel to end all motels; the view from our window is the Bay, shipping, and Alcatraz, so interesting, we can hardly tear ourselves away..."

And so it was.
