California: San Francisco International Airport - Bay Area sports Hall of Fame - Al Davis

As a coach first and then as the managing general partner, Al Davis turned the Oakland Raiders into one of the most successful franchises in professional football. Building on an unwavering philosophy that stressed a strong-armed quarterback, a powerful offensive line and a man-to-man defense, Davis’s teams played in five Super Bowls and, in an eight-year period beginning in 1976, won three of them. In Davis’s first 40 years with the franchise, the team suffered only seven losing seasons, won 12 division championships and played in 12 conference championship games. For many years, his teams were known for a physical, almost intimidating style of play. Davis also was renown for hiring the first African-American coach in the modern NFL and hiring a female as his team’s chief executive. Davis was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. He was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2010, and his plaque can be found at SFO Gate 81.

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, started in 1979 by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s Sports Committee and former president of the San Francisco 49ers, Lou Spadia, honors the Bay Area’s athletic legends. The first Enshrinement Banquet was held in 1980 and honored Bay Area sports legends Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Hank Luisetti, Ernie Nevers and Bill Russell. Each enshrinee receives a bronze plaque of their likeness which is displayed at the banquet and featured in the United Airlines terminal at SFO International Airport before being moved to a permanent location near the stadium, university, golf club, or school they were involved with in the Bay Area.

San Francisco International Airport (IATA: SFO, ICAO: KSFO, FAA LID: SFO), located 13 miles south of downtown San Francisco in unincorporated San Mateo County, offers non-stop links with more than 30 international points on 25 international carriers. The Bay Area's largest airport connects non-stop with more than 65 cities in the U.S. on 20 domestic airlines. The airport originally opened on May 7, 1927 as Mills field Municipal Aiport and was renamed San Francisco Municipal Airport in 1931, witht he Municipal replaced by International in 1955.

SFO was voted “North America’s Best Airport” in 2008 by passengers for its outstanding customer service and amenities.

In 2007, the San Francisco International Airport was ranked #121 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

Personality

Personality

Aside from his idiosyncrasies, Sheldon is purely logical. As a corollary, it is apparent that he believes everyone else to be intellectually inferior to him, including fellow physicists and even Isaac Newton.[6] Sheldon has an overly extensive general knowledge, such as shown by his comments regarding the introduction of the fork into Thailand.[7] Despite his intelligence, Sheldon is usually inept in most social interactions.Sheldon's eccentricities, snide remarks, and high logical and intellectual personality put him at odds with his own friends and especially Penny. He not only fails to understand the simplest sarcastic jokes made by Leonard[7], but also regards Penny's sadness over her breakup with blatant confusion.[8] However, recently, he has begun to understand the concept of sarcasm, attempting unsuccessfully to employ it himself towards Penny in the second season,[9] and successfully employing it towards his friends in the third season. Sheldon occasionally uses slang but essentially fails, and his new catchphrase is "Bazinga!". He isn't entirely sure how to hug someone.[10][11]Sheldon also has childish qualities. For example, he must get his way, such as in naming the Caltech Physics Bowl team or choosing the way to go to San Francisco for a conference where he seeks Nobel laureate George Smoot's approval, and he needs his mother (or Penny) to care for him when he is sick, which involves singing "Soft Kitty" and rubbing Vicks on his chest. He cannot stand to be interrupted, concede when he doesn't know something, lie, or hear a person bicker or people fight, crinkling his lips with insane frustration when any of these happen.[12][13][14] Sheldon cannot drive an automobile, and needs his friends to take him places; he feels someone of his intellect does not need to learn how to drive.[15]Like his friends, he is scientifically inclined, and is fond of comic books, video games, and general science fiction, with numerous references made to Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, Stargate, Star Trek, and Star Wars. Sheldon is particularly fond of the Star Trek franchise and is a fan of science officer Mr. Spock. Penny once gave Sheldon a napkin used by Leonard Nimoy, the actor who originally played Spock, and this greatly overwhelmed Sheldon as he now possessed the DNA of his famed idol.[10] He also used to idolize fictional prodigy Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation for qualities of the character he found similar to himself, but Wil Wheaton's surprise cancellation of an appearance at a Jackson, Mississippi Trek convention in 1995 caused Sheldon to swear vengeance against Wil in the form of a customizable card game tournament.[16] Another favorite character of his is Batman.[17][13][18] He likes playing Halo every Wednesday[19][17] and paintball on the weekend with his friends.[17]Unlike Leonard, Sheldon embraces his genius fully and is not ashamed of admitting his particularly eccentric interests (such as Klingon Boggle).[8][20]Sheldon does not seem to be able to tolerate alcohol, caffeine or other drugs very well as demonstrated in different instances. A small amount of alcohol made him extremely boisterous;[21] and a small amount of coffee made him extremely hyperactive;[22] taking valium also affected his behavior.[18]Sheldon often wears vintage t-shirts adorned with superhero logos, specific to the DC universe, among them the Flash, Superman, Aquaman, and the Green Lantern. He usually wears his shirts with a long sleeve underneath and commonly wears plaid pants. Sheldon is tall and thin (setting him apart from his shorter colleagues), with Penny saying he looks like a praying mantis, and Raj likening Star Wars C-3PO to "a shiny Sheldon".

Rexall Over 100 Years Of Caring

Rexall Over 100 Years Of Caring

In 1902 Louis K. Liggett persuaded 40 independent drug stores to invest $4,000 in a retailers' cooperative called United Drug Stores, which sold products under the Rexall name. After World War I, the cooperative established a franchise arrangement whereby independently owned retail outlets adopted the Rexall trade name and sold Rexall products. The company was based in Boston, Massachusetts, in an area now occupied by Northeastern University.

Justin Whitlock Dart, heir to the Walgreen's drugstore chain, took control of Boston-based United Drug Company in 1943. The chain operated under the Liggett, Owl, Sonta, and Rexall brands, which Dart rebranded under the Rexall name.
Rexall gained national exposure through its sponsorship of two famous classic American radio programs of the 1940s and 1950's: Amos and Andy and The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show. Both shows were often opened by an advertisement from an announcer portraying "your Rexall family druggist," and included the catch phrase "Good health to all from Rexall."
In 1946, United-Rexall Drug Inc. purchased the Renfro chain in Texas. It also launched the Owl Superstores chain. In 1958, the Rexall Drug Company was the largest U.S. drug store franchise, with 11,158 stores (for comparison, there are less than 12,000 McDonald's restaurants in the U.S. today). Time Magazine noted that 2/3 of its stores were in areas where 1/3 of the population lived. However, this comprised more than 20% of all drug stores in the United States.
Dart sold his stake in Rexall in 1978. Dart had acquired stakes in West Bend, Duracell, Hobart, Tupperware, Ralph Wilson Plastics, and Archer Glass, which were collectively known as Dart Industries (later Premark International).

Luther Mack, the owner of this fuddrucker's location, was in the restaurant with us tonight and he told emerson that he fell asleep and crashed his 1961 corvette.....emerson did not buy it

this is a model replica of Luther's corvette that he had made for display inside his Fuddrucker's at the Sparks Marina.....he also owns or owned all the mcdonald's in reno and a few other franchises, something like 12 locations!

ps ask what I ordered?

I had an ostrich burger......tasted like turkey to me, on an overly dry wheat bun served on an odd triangular melmac plate that it seemed to slide around on....we met my parents who are picky diners and like this place, I thought it was loud and crowded

Looking to the Future, Missouri City Reflects on a Successful 2010

Looking to the Future, Missouri City Reflects on a Successful 2010

Missouri City built strong partnerships with businesses during 2010. The City received $2,275 from a new AT&T outlet to use for the preservation of the historic Dew House. From left to right, Ivan Butterfield, Museum Board Member, Diane Ware, DeWalt Heritage Society, Mayor Allen Owen, Lisa Glenn, Dew House Volunteer Coordinator, Alice Aanstoos, AT&T Regional V.P. External Affairs, and Anthony Morado, AT&T Southwest Houston Sales Manager were at the ceremony.

Photos courtesy of Missouri City

Missouri City has achieved significant successes in 2010, continuing strong collaborations with citizens, building on the City's infrastructure, gaining new business partnerships, planning future amenities, and earning local, state and national distinction for excellence.

"In 2010, we focused on capital improvements and economic development," said City Manager Frank Simpson. "By leveraging funding from others, less than 25 percent of all capital improvement projects are being paid for with City property taxes."

The cost of all current infrastructure improvements is more than $82 million; the City's share being paid for from property taxes is $18 million. The remaining $64 million comes from, state and federal funds, Fort Bend and Harris Counties, utility user and capital recovery fees and Special Districts. Here are some of the major projects under way:

*Texas Parkway Revitalization: Phase I of the transformation is taking place and features sidewalks and drainage improvements; completion is expected to take nine months. Phase II will involve landscaping and signage.

*Community Center & Golf Pro Shop and Tennis & Recreation Center: With City Council approval of a $7.375 million settlement for the Quail Valley Golf property, community meetings followed seeking citizen input on development of the two projects. The design process is under way for both facilities and construction for the structures is targeted to begin in summer 2011.

*Surface Water Treatment Plant: The state-of-the art plant is currently being constructed and will have the capacity to produce 10 million gallons of water per day. Completion is scheduled for next winter, ahead of the deadline to meet the mandated groundwater reduction requirements.

*Gessner Road Revitalization: A full reconstruction of South Gessner Road from Beltway 8 to Cravens Road is ongoing; completion is scheduled for summer 2011.

*Intelligent Transportation System: Along Murphy Road and State Highway 6, major intersections underwent turn lane and traffic signal improvements, with median installation on State Highway 6 continuing into 2011. These are the first steps of the synchronization of city traffic signals so that they can communicate with each other and adapt to different traffic patterns. Overall, this project will improve mobility and safety and shorten travel times.

*Emergency Communications: City Council approved the installation of a new low-power AM radio station-1690 AM. Staff will follow FCC guidelines for station usage and transmit emergency information, weather bulletins and traffic and road construction updates, featuring directions to City landmarks and events.

Facing Challenges with Proactive Policies

Last June, City Council approved the fiscal year 2011 operating budget of $31.2 million, a 6 percent reduction from the previous year, with no tax increase for residents. "We have had a very busy and productive year in our City, however, we are not without our challenges," Mayor Allen Owen said. "Like other cities across the country, our revenues from sales tax and property taxes have been reduced. We are faced with doing what everyone else has to do, and that is to look for ways to do more with less. Our employees rolled up their sleeves, tightened their belts, and made a commitment not to let this affect the service levels to our citizens."

New Services Benefit Residents

Based on two voter referendum items on the May election ballot, City Council passed two ordinances-one bans smoking in public places and the second implemented a city-wide municipal trash program.

The solid waste collection service will be provided by Republic Services for the next five years. Service for subdivisions was chosen by homeowner associations and municipal utility districts and will result in savings for about 75 percent of residents.

In other City Council action, members took a step further with the state ban on most cell phone use in school zones and passed an ordinance that bans motorists from texting throughout the city.
