Saint Catherine's

Saint Catherine's

Day 359/365

Ah, it looks like I'll have a little fun here at the end of my project. My hard drive that holds all my raw files started clicking... sigh... I have two back-ups, but as I had been in re-edit mode the last few days I had maybe two dozen files that were not backed up anywhere. Perfect... I was able to copy them all off but the drive was VERY slow to respond. Tried to "repair" it but Disk Utility after about 20 minutes said it was toast and to try to copy off anything I could. Got it all, but so very slow. Still, glass half full, I salvaged everything and ordered a new drive. so that I can restore everything.

Anyway, this evenings edit that I finally got to is a shot of Saint Catherine's Monastery at the base of Mount Sinai in Egypt. Much happier with the re-edit than the previous black and white. I had a couple of shots, but this one with a Bedouin approaching me (I can't remember why) remains my fav.

Computer Crash! June 8th

Computer Crash! June 8th

eeekkkk!!!!! Whats the worst thing that can happen to a flickr/ etsy addict? A computer crash at midnight. Thank god for the nice guy at the DELL support center. Once it got to this point at 4am I went to bed and in the morning the computer God's were satisfied and my computer was restored. We only had to repair so nothing was lost thank the great computer gods (must back-up hard drive, must back-up hard drive). The hubby thinks I'm golden right now for fixing it, lets not tell him it was all thanks to the gnomes of Dell and the computer gods smiling down on our little slice of technology.

Brake Repair - Pittsburgh style

Brake Repair - Pittsburgh style

Ah, the first warm day of spring, It has been a long hard winter, lots of Pittsburgh road salt, Ice, cold, time to check the air pressure on the spare tire, oh, whats this? A pair of vice grips pliers on my rear brake line. Looks like its been there awhile, Probably since 9/7/06 when I had the brakes worked on.... Apparently I have been using only the front brakes since then. The same place performed state inspection of the car on 11/6/06. When I removed the pliers, the brakes were squishy, but working. Maybe a little better now. I feel lucky that the weight of the pliers did not tear the hose out of the fitting. What would you do about this?

Thunderbird 2

Thunderbird 2

Ah, the nostalgia! This is a picture I took today of the "40th Anniversary Model" of Thunderbird 2 by Corgi Toys. This die cast Thunderbird was my favourite toy when I was child (back in the early to mid 1970s). This model, however, has better attention to small details than was the case with models available back then. I'm not sure what relationship there has been between the Dinky and Corgi companies, but this model appears to be a refined version of the Dinky models I owned as a child. It's not the exact same tool, but it appears to be derived from the original.

Anyway, the most serious problem with the 1970s models was that the red plastic booster jets were too fragile for serious play and almost every kid I knew (myself and my brother included) eventually ended up breaking them off. My parents were kind enough to buy me three models between the early and mid-'70s (Well, Thunderbirds was my favourite TV show and Thunderbird 2 was my favourite toy), with numbers two and three being replacements for their broken-jet predecessors. Number three I remember was coloured blue instead of green! Just what were those weirdos at Dinky thinking? I remember being both puzzled and deeply disappointed. It was a ridiculous thing to do!

The Corgi model pictured above has a much better booster jet design. The red jets on this toy are basically thick plastic caps wrapped around sturdy metal pins. Obviously they're not indestructable (pun intended), but they do seem noticeably more robust.

Also of issue with the 1970s models was that the inside of the pod had a few rough edges which eventually caused the plastic Thunderbird 4 housed within to take on the appearance of a smoothed pebble on the beach. Today's Corgi model though, has a plastic pod (fortunately both the colour and exterior finish matches the metal of the aircraft itself) and a metal Thunderbird 4. Which, by the way, has a good level of detail considering its dimunitive size.

Another issue was that the early die-cast Thunderbirds were a bit hit and miss in the detail department. Most of the models I remember seeing had the air intake itself painted red, instead of the area immediately in front of the intake. The decals and transfers were also less accurate back then. The Dinky Toys Thunderbirds that I possessed also lacked the yellow wing tip, cruising jet and fuselage stripes. Also missing were the black and yellow bands around the rocket boosters. As you can see, all of these details are present in the Corgi model pictured above.

The only retrograde step to my mind is the addition of the rather obtrusive, grey buttons for releasing the pod and mock-telescopic legs. If I were to be *really* picky, I'd also point out that the pod-latch (which secures the pod within the aircraft body) is rather weak, the pod door has no latch at all (it falls open whenever the pod is freestanding) and perhaps the nose is just fractionally too pointy (lthough this is not evident in the picture above)? Nevertheless, all in all it's pretty accurate for a metal toy, and possesses a sufficient level of detail, I'm sure, to satisfy all but the most fantical and demanding of Thunderbirds fans.

By the way, I bought this for Jake, my son and not for myself (honest!). It seems to be the only one of the five Thunderbirds machines readily available in British toy stores at present, although, as in the 1970s, Lady Penelope's pink Rolls Royce is available in die cast (this always puzzled me as a child. Why didn't Dinky make models of *all* the Thunderbirds? I never met a child who wouldn't have rather owned Thunderbird 1, 3 or 5 over and above Lady Penelope's car). After doing some research, I realised that the until quite recently the toy market was awash with Soundtech models, particularly during and after the last screening of Thunderbirds on British TV. But it seems that most of these are now only available, in various states of repair, on ebay. Copies of the model pictured here can be purchased directly from the Corgi toys Web site for ?14.99. I haven't bought any toys for myself since I started listening to punk rock back when I was 12 years old. But this model is so evocative, bringing back so many fond memories that I may well buy one for myself - even if it's only for use as a desk ornament.

Tidy original Ford D series

Tidy original Ford D series

Just around the corner in Amberley at a truck repair facility was this local farmers very original D-series Ford. D-series sold very well in the New Zealand Market. Many of the lighter D300s and 400s were petrol powered and it was not unknown for bigger ones to be petrol either. A 6-cylinder engine from the US Mustang car was used! This is a transitional model or circa 1973 vintage. It has the small mirrors and thin mirror arms but sports the newer syle door badges which give weight and power information. This model is likely a 1311 or 1313. The tipping body whilst not a tipper in the common UK sense is a very common spec in NZ. It would be referred to as having a deck with a hoist! Most agricultural lorries have this facility. The vehicle retains its original black number plates.

Space Epik on former SOLID COLD "The Chiller"

Space Epik on former SOLID COLD

The name, solid cold comes from my all time favorite boxcar: The mechanically refrigerated Solid Cold "reefer". The story of the Solid Cold is as follows: In 1982 Fruit Growers Express, or FGE (owned by CSX) needed to repair and upgrade their 20 year old existing fleet of RBL boxcars (insulated plug door cars with moveable load dividers). 2500 of these RBL cars were to be retrofitted with a modified load divider system, as well as installing Chemply fiberglass resistant lining to the sidewalls and upgrading the cushioned underframe and plug door system.

The new refurbished RBL cars cost a fraction of the price of what a new car would have cost ($12,000 vs $60,000). These rebuilt cars were as good as “gold” and as “solid” as a new car. To market these new cars to shippers, FGE had the new cars re-painted with a 3D looking scheme that read Solid Gold.

The first prototype out of shop (in Alexandria, VA) was to be stenciled “Solid Gold” on the right side. During stenciling however, part of the ‘G’ had slipped and the horizontal leg of the ‘G’ was missing therefore making it look like a ‘C’. The stencil blunder gave FGE the idea to market their mechanical reefer cars in companion-like fashion to the Solid Gold and at that moment the name SOLID COLD was born.

In 1987 CSX replaced their marketing director with someone new. In an effort to establish his “identity”, he changed the “Solid Cold” to “Real Cold”. About 50 cars were repainted in this new scheme. The concept and the individual behind it were laughed off the property. As another interesting note, in 1983 FGE retrofitted 50 RPL cars for Stroh’s beer, in which they installed a 20,000 gal stainless steel tank for moving product at a protected temperature. These 50 cars had “The Chiller” logo in the same script as the Solid Cold cars.

During later years and subsequent changes in ownership, Solid Colds began to bare reporting marks such as SFLC, BNFE, ARMH and UPFE. These days, catching a Solid Cold is like finding a peice of hay in a needle stack. The majority of Solid Colds these days have been retired or upgraded/rebuilt under OT-37 or greater to make interchange rules. Rumor has it that many of the Solid Colds have been refurbished into the new UP Chilled Express cars. But that is another story. If anyone knows more on the whereabouts, history or even wants to trade photos of Solid Cold's feel free to drop me a line anytime."

Bumper 101: Whammy!

Bumper 101: Whammy!

Spraying flexible primer over the existing paint on this bumper caused several locations to orange-peel badly. I tried zip-stripping those areas only (did not have enough primer to do the whole part over again) and that revealed the problem - the areas that wrinkled were never sanded - at all! The plastic must be rough for good adhesion, and the previous repair missed some spots.

After screwing with this for several days, running out of flexible primer, and sanding all the nooks and crannies by hand, I became frustrated here and broke out the sand-blaster and ablated the problem areas as can be seen. Tomorrow I'll smooth it all out and apply some 2-part primer, then maybe this project can get finished sometime soon.

Otto performs a laparoscopic squeakectomy

Otto performs a laparoscopic squeakectomy

Otto is REALLY good at removing squeakers from toys. If he doesn't do it the moment he gets his little paws on a new one, it will happen. It's just a matter of when.

Last night a friend came by for dinner. As it was raining all day and he'd been stuck indoors with his dog, Jake, he brought Jake along for some R&R with Otto.

After much trading of toys, guarding of bones, and competing for chewies Otto normally ignores, my friend and Jake left. They left behind a small red squeaking ball. Otto of course found it.

This afternoon Otto ran about the house squeaking it constantly. This evening, when I went to throw it for him, the squeaker no longer squeaked. It just rattles around inside the ball, a dead piece of plastic.

Somehow Otto managed to disable the squeaker without the usual shredding and left over body parts. A sort of laparoscopic squeakectomy. I've called him the surgeon before when he's dismembered some stuffed critter; I guess he's upgraded his skills.

laparoscopic ventral hernia repair

laparoscopic ventral hernia repair

Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair

Primary and incisional ventral hernias are common conditions often encountered in surgical practice. Because of the frequency of this problem it has come to be managed by surgeons in general, regardless of the type of hospital or the conditions dealt with in their daily practice. Laparoscopic surgery has demonstrated to have an important role among the different technique described to repair ventral hernia with less recurrent rate, less morbidity and less overall cost than open conventional repair, with all the advange of the laparoscopic approach. As a result the indications for this surgical technique are currently being debated since the advantages are evident and progressive implementation is ensured. Now is the time to analyze the usefulness, results, technical variants, anatomic, physiologic and scientific basis and implications involved in implementation of laparoscopy as the technique of choice.

Male Red-Rumped Parrot

Male Red-Rumped Parrot

Here we have the much more colourful male Red-rumped parrot, partner of the more drab female, as pictured in the previous post.

These are wild and free parrots - , another Australian native parrot. A small number of these birds live around the sports playing fields of La Trobe University in suburban Melbourne.

Here, it is sitting on the wire boundary fence of the Baseball diamond, which is one of the very few places with a lush green grass, during the terrible 12 year drought in South East Australia.
This is a wild and free red-rumped parrot – a species that I have only ever seen around the precincts of the University.
Normally I only see them on my lunchtime walks, around the distant sports fields.
These birds, being ground feeders are very vulnerable to attack, and therefore are very wary and skittish – and this is a rare moment for me to get a reasonable photo – mainly due to having a 600 mm film equivalent lens!
Scientific name: Psephotus haematonotus
Family: Psittacidae
Order: Psittaciformes
Red-rumped Parrots are medium-sized, slender parrots. The adult male is bright green, with a blue-green head, a red rump, and yellow shoulders and belly. The female is a duller, olive-green, with a green rump and faint yellow or light green scales on the belly. Young birds of both sexes are duller in colour.
The Red-rumped Parrot is found in south-eastern Australia, throughout most of New South Wales (less so on the coast) and Victoria, with an isolated population in north-eastern South Australia and south-western Queensland.
The Red-rumped Parrot feeds in pairs or small flocks on the ground, preferring seeds and leaves of grasses. It also will feed on seeds, fruits and flowers in trees. Often seen feeding in suburban parks around Melbourne. They will feed with other parrots, including Eastern Rosellas and Galahs.

Legacy

Legacy

We got word yesterday that our paper "The effects of repeat collaboration on creative abrasion" was accepted for publication in the Academy of Management Review, one of the premier journals in business research and one I have been wanting to get into during my career. The paper proposes a theory of why repeat collaborations are often creatively disappointing, and what teams can do to counter these negative effects. This is about my 70th journal publication.

For an academic, the hope is that at least one of our ideas will become a legacy, but the reality is that only a few theories remain in the buzz of the community year to year and decade to decade.

Coates Window

Coates Window

Claude Coates was a Churchwarden of All Saints from 1979 to 1980. On his death in 1980 the Church Council received a substantial bequest to be used exclusively for the repair and restoration of teh fabric of the church.

In 1992, the Church Council decided to commemorate the generosity of Claude Coates by commissioning a new stained glass window. The Church Council was anxious that the new window should also pay tribute to many others who over the years have enabled Walsoken Church to be kept in a good state of repair. The completed design in detailed and the following may be of some help when inspecting the glass.

The window consists of five lights. In the centre light is the figure of St Dorothy, an unusual Saint, who, like the other Saints in the window, appears on the church's famous Font.

Day 122: The night everything happened...

Day 122: The night everything happened...

The reason why I haven't been uploading is because...my computer crashed! Yay! I had no programs running besides my basics (windows, anti-virus software, a few others) but I was not performing on the laptop. Once I saw that I had gotten a message from Adobe stating I needed to upgrade I kept thinking "UGH, not again". Well, little did I know that pressing cancel just pressed that sweet spot for my computer. I tried ctrl+alt+delete and nothing. I had to do a hard reset then did a cold boot. Well, then my "percentage" when trying to load all my software basically kept telling me in it's own way that it hates me. Well boy does it. Regardless I have now encountered the blue screen of death and have spent quite a bit of time since last week to recover my harddrive.

Lesson learned. Keep everything on a external HD.

I'm still glancing over at my laptop right now, trying to run recovery console on it, but the chkdsk isn't working out for me very well at this point. I think I'm just going to need to get the adapter and hope that I can save my harddrive myself or take it to best buy. Man oh man...

I am so not happy...

    plasma tv
  • (Plasma TVs) Plasma TVs uses tiny tubes of gas for each pixel displayed, and electricity makes each of the pixels glow. Plasma TVs will create deeper blacks and at times much brighter colors than LCD TVs, as well as having better contrast.

  • A plasma display panel (PDP) is a type of flat panel display common to large TV displays (80 cm or larger). They are called "plasma" displays because the pixels rely on plasma cells, or what are in essence chambers more commonly known as fluorescent lamps.

  • Images are produced by xenon and neon gas contained in hundreds of thousands of tiny cells positioned between two plates of glass.

Defective Samsung capacitors

Defective Samsung capacitors

IF YOU VISIT THIS PHOTO THROUGH A LINK FROM A NON-FLICKR WEBSITE PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT. This photo receives nearly all its views from "unknown source" and am curious as to what that actually indicates.

Shown here are defective capacitors on the power supply board for a Samsung plasma TV. When these capacitors fail, the relay which controls the on-off switch no longer functions correctly. The problem manifests as the TV repeatedly failing to fully turn on and eventually becoming completely unresponsive.

The four capacitors noted in the image are all 1000uF/10V and can be replaced by equivalents available at Radio Shack for about $1.50 each if you have a soldering iron. I found soldering wick helpful in removing the old solder from the pads, especially since my iron was insufficiently hot to completely melt it.

Stripe Of Death

Stripe Of Death

TV woes.

I've enjoyed almost 2 years of trouble free ownership of my PX60, when last night a vertical black stripe appeared . I've tried unplugging, and removing components, resetting to factory settings, but the stripe still appears across all inputs. The TV is out of warranty, I called Panasonic and they suggested I call a technician. Is there anything else I can do before I call in the cavalry? Comments welcome

Red-light district (De Wallen) Amsterdam

De Wallen is the largest and best-known red-light district in Amsterdam and a major tourist attraction. It is located in the heart of the oldest part of Amsterdam, covering several blocks south of the church Oude Kerk and crossed by several canals. De Wallen is a network of alleys containing approximately three hundred tiny one-room cabins rented by prostitutes who offer their sexual services from behind a window or glass door, typically illuminated with red lights. The area also has a number of sex shops, sex theatres, peep shows, a sex museum, a cannabis museum, and a number of coffee shops that sell marijuana.

De Wallen, together with the prostitution areas Singelgebied and Ruysdaelkade, form the Rosse Buurt (red light areas) of Amsterdam.
