Ta Prohm Ta Prohm is the modern name of a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara. Located approximately one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray near Tonle Bati, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm has been left in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors. Foundation and expansion After ascending the throne of Cambodia in 1181 A.D., Jayavarman VII embarked on a massive program of construction and public works. Rajavihara ("royal temple"), today known as Ta Prohm ("ancestor Brahma"), was one of the first temples founded pursuant to that program. The stele commemorating the foundation gives a date of 1186 A.D. Jayavarman VII constructed Rajavihara in honor of his family. The temple's main image, representing Prajnaparamita, the personification of wisdom, was modelled on the king's mother. The northern and southern satellite temples in the third enclosure were dedicated to the king's guru and his elder brother respectively. As such, Ta Prohm formed a complementary pair with the temple monastery of Preah Khan, dedicated in 1191 A.D., the main image of which represented the Bodhisattva of compassion Lokesvara and was modelled on the king's father. The temple's stele records that the site was home to more than 12,500 people (including 18 high priests and 615 dancers), with an additional 80,000 souls in the surrounding villages working to provide services and supplies. The stele also notes that the temple amassed considerable riches, including gold, pearls and silks. Expansions and additions to Ta Prohm continued as late as the rule of Srindravarman at the end of the 13th century. Abandonment and restoration After the fall of the Khmer empire in the 15th century, the temple of Ta Prohm was abandoned and neglected for centuries. When the effort to conserve and restore the temples of Angkor began in the early 20th century, the Ecole francaise d'Extreme-Orient decided that Ta Prohm would be left largely as it had been found, as a "concession to the general taste for the picturesque." According to pioneering Angkor scholar Maurice Glaize, Ta Prohm was singled out because it was "one of the most imposing [temples] and the one which had best merged with the jungle, but not yet to the point of becoming a part of it". Nevertheless, much work has been done to stabilize the ruins, to permit access, and to maintain "this condition of apparent neglect." The design of Ta Prohm is that of a typical "flat" Khmer temple (as opposed to a temple-pyramid or temple-mountain, the inner levels of which are higher than the outer). Five rectangular enclosing walls surround a central sanctuary. Like most Khmer temples, Ta Prohm is oriented to the east, so the temple proper is set back to the west along an elongated east-west axis. The outer wall of 1000 by 650 metres encloses an area of 650,000 square metres that at one time would have been the site of a substantial town, but that is now largely forested. There are entrance gopuras at each of the cardinal points, although access today is now only possible from the east and west. In the 13th century, face towers similar to those found at the Bayon were added to the gopuras. Some of the face towers have collapsed. At one time, moats could be found inside and outside the fourth enclosure. The three inner enclosures of the temple proper are galleried, while the corner towers of the first enclosure form a quincunx with the tower of the central sanctuary. This basic plan is complicated for the visitor by the circuitous access necessitated by the temple's partially collapsed state, as well as by the large number of other buildings dotting the site, some of which represent later additions. The most substantial of these other buildings are the libraries in the southeast corners of the first and third enclosures; the satellite temples on the north and south sides of the third enclosure; the Hall of Dancers between the third and fourth eastern gopuras; and a House of Fire east of the fourth eastern gopura. A bas-relief over an entrance at Ta Prohm includes this intense meditating or praying figure.Ta Prohm has few narrative bas-reliefs. One explanation that has been proffered for this dearth is that much of the temple's original Buddhist narrative artwork must have been destroyed by Hindu iconoclasts following the death of Jayavarman VII. At any rate, some depictions of scenes from Buddhist mythology do remain. One badly eroded bas-relief illustrates the "Great Departure" of Siddhartha, the future Buddha, from his father's palace. Implosão da Fábrica da BRAHMA - Sambódromo A implosao do predio da Brahma para as novas arquibancadas, camarotes e frisas do Sambodromo. Neste domingo a velha fabrica da Bhrama foi demolida pela propria empresa em acordo com a Prefeitura do Rio apos o destombamento dos predios da antiga fabrica. O Objetivo da prefeitura e a construcao do lado par do Sambodromo e para a cervejaria e a construcao de um grande hotel. Os dois sao muito bem vindos. Acho que foi a primeira obra de Oscar Niemeyer a ir para o chao, nem que seja parcialmente com foi o caso do antigo Setor 2 do Sambodromo. E a antiga fabrica da Bhrama ja foi tarde tambem. Uma enorme area sem uso ao lado do metro e da Cidade Nova que esta em expansao com novos e modernos predios. Tudo ao redor daquela area vai se valorizar com a quebra do gabarito que estava engessando aquela area. A fabrica da Brahma na verdade nao tinha nenhum conceito artistico, cultural ou religioso para ser tombada pelo poder publico, so o pequeno valor historico por ser uma fabrica antiga, mas nenhum dos predios era original e toda area estava degradada muito antes da construcao do Sambodromo. Is this a German joke? Satisfies my appetite for silly tags though, but not my general appetite. A starter in a meal (which to be fair seemed to be compiled entirely from canapes), which was a sliver, about 2cm across and .5cm thick, of fatty black pudding, with some pickly pish on it, served on a teaspoon visited by arch spoonbender Uri Geller, atop a side plate. Served on a boat chartered by Raleigh Cycles on The Bodensee/Lake Konstanz. On the plus side, I got to visit Austria for 10 minutes which is a first. Beer made up for the food though. FreakBoat Work continues of the FreakAngels Lego project. Here we see a partial build of Jack's boat - part one of the "Ambushed by Mudlarks" playset ;D I got some more parts in the mail this weekend and hence have been able to start fitting them together. There's still a lot of bits missing, and a lot of the pieces used here are temporary, but it's actually starting to resemble Jack's boat. Dressing Table with Canopy The long shelf was created from a tall shelf, that I found in the garage. I mounted it to the wall, primed it and painted it the same color as the wall paint. Why you ask: #1. It wasn't that interesting shape-wise. and the wall paint was purchase at the Green Project in a 5 gallon bucket. So I wanted to make good use of it. The chair was a donate from a client- I painted it to go with the space, and added the pillows for comfort. The mirror was also found in the clients garage- and I painted it Black, so it would Pop off the wall. Princesses on X-mas Eve The excitement started a little early. Jane and I bought the girls these bed canopies from Ikea. My plan was to hang them above their beds while they were sleeping and then have them wake up on Christmas morning and see them. But we decided to surprise them with the canopies before they went to bed. So while they were still downstairs, I hung them up and when we called them to bed they came upstairs are were so excited to see them hanging there. Very attractively toned, a well-nigh perfect coin, the most beautiful of all the facing-head tet-radrachms of Amphipolis and one of the prettiest of all ancient Greek coins. Extremely fine. From the Thessalonica Region Hoard of 1965 (Coin Hoards I, 37). This coin is unquestionably one of the great masterpieces of Greek numismatic art, and is surely one of the loveliest. Facing heads were very difficult to engrave, and only the very best, or most confident, die cutters attempted to do them. First used successfully on coinage in late 5th century Sicily (as above, 68, 74, 108), there was a great vogue for such heads in the 4th century, the best known being those on coins from Rhodes, Amphipolis, Ainos, Klazomenai and Larissa. On the whole, those from Amphipolis were the best made, by engravers of great ability, though often with highly varied ideas about how Apollo should look. In some cases he has the toughness of an athlete, while in others he can be very delicately portrayed. The present coin shows us a very young Apollo of a dazzling, ideal beauty, without, however, even a hint of either the staring intensity which makes him clearly godlike on some Amphipolis dies, or the insipidity which appears on others. LEU81, 158 Get this! I just got this from Amazon...It is a book of not learning to draw, but MASTERING the Human figure. And from its contents, it is clear to me that this is its intention. It is based on the drawing course at the Art Students League of New York. It has advice from how to sharpen your pencil (I kid you not)...to how to make forms recede or pop out with different line widths...it explains the planes of the different parts of the body, shadows, hair, and there's some drapery stuff in there too. Some of this stuff is the missing link in my development as a self taught artist. I am going to STUDY this book and do all the exercises. I am very excited! They weave together to create an interesting carpet of different colors and textures. However, it's important the plants have similiar growing requirements (light, soil, moisture) and spreading habits so the more aggressive plant(s) don't overtake the slower growing ones. This is a shade garden and receives only a couple hours of direct sunlight per day. Subdued chrysanthemum in shade garden This bright striped chrysanthemum began life as a florist's mum. I always break off stalks and stick them into the garden wherever I have a vacant spot. They take root so easily. I've noticed that many flowers, certainly including this one, change color depending on the exposure. This was much brighter -- almost gold and orange -- last year in the sunny garden, but here in the shade it has bloomed yellow with coral stripes.
