I'm not sure what kind of shot I was going for here... I think I was trying to get the Allerton hotel sign and the Hancock in one shot, and I just couldn't get the right angle. I am pretty sure I took this shot by accident, but when I pulled it up in post processing, I liked the way it looked. And the Chicago Police paddywagon just made it even more interesting. So I call it the Mag Mile Mistake.

We left our house for the LONG 10 minute drive down the road today to go camping at Woodchip Campground. We usually camp up north at Platte River campground, which is a beautiful and really nice campground, but we thought we would try the local place just to see how it would work for "quick & easy" weekend getaways.

It definitely was handy to be close, becauase we forgot a couple items, so I just ran home and got them. This is also the first time we have camped on a site with electricity in years. It was kinda nice, as we could use our electric fans in the tent and even an electric toaster for our breakfast!

We went with the Holleman's, whose kids are very close in age to ours. We haven't gone camping with Daryl & Kelly since before both of us had kids, so it is quite a change from last time!

The campground has a really nice pool, and we were put on a spot right next to the playground; both of which were big hits with the kids. And here's Daryl cooking up some dinner dogs with the kids for our first meal at Woodchip!

Over the lunar new year break at school I went to lunch with my uncle and cousin. We ate at the Ximending branch of Az Azu Sabo, which is part of the Zoe International chain of japanese themed restaurants in Taiwan. They serve an array of semi-japanese bento style foods. Besides the main course, you also choose different types of side dishes. This rice is cooked with preserved plums which not only made it pleasing to look at, but it had a wonderful sour bite to it.

Pan Fried Pork Chop in Sage Butter




Pan Fried Pork Chop in Sage Butter





Bought this piece of well marbled pork chop in Greensmith the other day. I pan fried it in butter sage and glazed it with a splash of balsamic vinegar. The acidity of the vinegar compliments the sweetness of the pork and the fragrant butter sage. Here's how I did it:

1. score the skin
2. heat the pan under high heat
3. season the pork with salt
4. wash sage and chop garlic into slices
5. add garlic into the pan
6. when garlic is sizzling, add the pork (skin side down, standing up)
7. when the skin is golden, put pork chop on its side in the pan
8. turn over when pork is golden on one side
9. add butter and sage
10. spoon excess butter over the pork chop (keeps the chop moist)
11. when the pork chop is almost cooked, add splash of balsamic vinegar
12. add sugar if needed
13. pepper and salt for final seasoning
14. take the pork chop out of the pan and let it rest for 5 minutes
15. garnish with left over sage butter and garlic
16. serve!

saute pork chop in a glaze of soy sauce and pepper and sesame seed oil (olive or any oil will do, mostly to keep the meat from sticking to the pan). Soy sauce for color, pepper for the fat (it sticks to the fat like bees to honey, I dunno why).
2 table spoons soy sauce, 1/2 table spoon pepper, 1 table spoon of oil, if you insist on measuring. I don't, and all I have are tablespoons.

Marinating ahead of time would be bettter, but who has time for that fancy shit, yo.

mmmm. so when i got home from work i made myself some dinner, a nice piece of Grilled Chicken, seasoned nicely, over noodles all topped with a lovely array of String Cheese...i even took the time to pull it all apart....Bring it Bobby Flay, I would stomp you! It's all in the strings baby!
ha no it was really good, and now i'm full. aaaaand tired. but i just saw some Song Titles from the new Dave CD....bah so excited... you have no clue.

Today at work, i tried to do something on the computer but for some reason it wasn't allowing me to, but it is possible i just need a better computer....they're using PC's....wtf?!?! O_o
oh, and the one lady took and deleted a file i was working on cause it was, "in the way" on the server folder....yeah 3 hours later she was trying to show me something and after it didn't work i asked her if she actually deleted the file cause i had already done what she was trying to do...she said yes, annnd SHE had to re layout the entire project.
I sometimes feel that they think i'm stupid. which bothers me because i'm not, and like I do know what I'm doing, and I can accomplish tasks. I overheard the guy i work with tell someone "EPIC is done, but it was done by J so if theres something wrong with it let me know and i'll just have to show him myself how things work around here" ...i just stood there and shook my head...thinking, I'm right here and thanks for the confidence. Don't bother Teaching me things, just expect me to know them right away....

i've found the real treasure has been in my descriptions and my photos have been lacking, I'll try and step up my game soon.

there wasn't any problems, and i did prove to them that i am in fact...not incompetent.

The pots at the start of cooking. The blue wires lead to a digital thermometer. The only preparation was that the black-eyes were washed and then soaked for an hour or so before cooking started, and the rice and lentils were washed.

This year I prepped, gathered and created games for our Fall Carnival, Kermes. When a third grade teacher became the target for Skeleton Sponge Splash the line went clear across the basketball court. Busy, busy day. Spent the night at Erin's so I could leave school late on Friday and come back early on Saturday to set up for Kermes. Then I painted faces all day, enjoyed homemade pizza cooked in our school garden mud oven, cleaned up, rushed home, drove to the city with Rob to see History Boys (got lost on foot and ran around). Busy sums it up.

This the great pit cooking, the year before we did a huge beef roast, 50 lbs on a spit and it never fully cooked and all the drunks attacked it so we needed a way to keep the fans away fomr the chow!. This was a sort of luau/clambake thing where we built a huge fire on rocks lowered 30 chickens, 4 turkeys, 100 lbs of corn and potatoes and covered it for 10 hours. This is either where we were covering or uncovering it.

Maelgwn won this tourney(2009) and will be the king of the Outlands for the 3rd time.

Maelgwn sat upon the throne

Golden Lillian at his right

From him came the stern decree
“E’re a prince chosen can be
You shall hearken to my plea.”

From Listmaker’s sacred door"

To a craftsman did he say

From the north, east, south and west

In real life photos Jon usually can be seen in the background with his camera. Here he is as a priest in the lower right, way off in the distance. He has a fast horse and I'm eating its dust.

I didn't start taking screenshots until we began our tour to get gryphon routes - when we were fighting big hulking monsters I somehow didn't think about screenshots. I'm also just calling all of this Outlands because I have no idea where the heck anything is yet. Or what it's called.

I went old school this year, technique wise. I have grilled and butterflied and fried and made interesting herbal designs under the skin before, but this one is just thoroughly salted and peppered, buttered, and stuffed.

Yes, I still stuff my bird. Yes, I have read about all the reasons I should not do this. If you stuff it right before it goes into a very hot oven and make good use of a cooking thermometer, you won't die.

Use the BACK of the paring knife and kinda make a peek-a-boo cut, following its natural curve....

Here's the start of the top vein. Whatever you do, don't cut into the arteries, because then.. Blood will seep into the liver, and once cooked, you'll have, black-brown stains everywhere. That, would suck big time, friends.

Just follow the vein, using BACK of the knife until it ends.

WW All-Time Favorites Cookbook

Hands-on Prep: 10 min Cook: 10 min Serves: 6

2 tsp canola oil 1/2 tsp mustard powder
1 onion, chopped 1 lb ground skinless turkey breast
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped 1 c. prepared barbecue sauce
2 garlic cloves, minced 6 multigrain hamburger rolls
1 1/2 tsp chili powder 6 lettuce leaves
3/4 tsp ground cumin 6 thick tomato slices
1/2 tsp dried oregano

1. Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet set over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic; cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the chili powder, cumin, oregano, and mustard powder. Add the turkey and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, 3-4 minutes. Stir in the barbecue sauce and cook until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes.
2. Spoon 1/2 cup of the turkey mixture onto the bottom half of each roll. Top each with 1 lettuce leaf, 1 tomato slice, and the top of the roll.

Per serving (1 sandwich): 273 cal, 6 g fat, 2 g Sat Fat, 0 g Trans Fat, 49 mg Chol, 603 mg Sod, 30 g Carb, 3 g fiber, 24 g Prot, 79 mg Calc.

New character design. We really really want to cast the kway teow uncle from yesterday in a movie showcasing how kung foo masters blend into todays society with regular day jobs. His moves are honed from the daily practice he gets perfecting his ultimate kway teow. His primary weapon is the cloth he uses to clean up stray kway teow that falls out of the pan. He carries a wok on his back which doubles as a shield and frisbee when necessary. Or even a raiden hat.

His arch-enemy is Flying Man, a fat merchant who sells cooking oil rich in trans fats and schemes to poison the peasant populace. Or generally any evil and rich upperclassman.

Yes, I just watched Kung Foo Panda this morning.

The Thanksgiving turkey is just about finished in the Wolf range. It was a chipotle turkey from the November 2008 Bon Appetit.
