The all analog controls! This is one of the things that makes me love this machine. There is a dial for the cycle programs that can be advanced or changed on the spot and the heater has its own switch. I can do a Sani-Wash on "Short" setting in 45min. and get gleaming dishes.

Took a while to get everything apart. Remove door skin, take control panel apart, open plastic housing (how?). Two seconds to solder the bad connection. Put it back together, viola.It pulls too much current through that point, it's a relay and a piss-poor design.

Maytag engine

This is just one of 12 Maytags that my grandffather and I removed from an old shed of his this week. My grandfather has over 30 Maytag engines, and parts for about 20 more.

This engine was originally used on a Maytag Brand Washing Machine from the 1930's. Yes, washing machines ran on gas back then. Growing up, I was around these things constantly. We would take these engines out to the threshing shows to display them to the public, and I always had fun with them.

My grandfather and I emptying out a shed since the roof collapsed. Inside the shed are a lot of old engines, oil cans, antique scooters, and pedal cars.

Hotpoint Washer

After a light exterior cleanup I decided to snap a shot of the washer's control panel. This is a MOL (middle of the line) model and is a 2-speed unit with 3 wash temperatures, 4 water levels and 3 separate fabric cycles. This machine also has a bleach dispenser, ramped agitator and Hotpoint's version of the GE Filter-Flo lint filtration system.

(Ovens) The small dome-shaped adobe ovens are used just as the old Dutch ovens of Pennsylvania were used. A fire is built in the oven and when it becomes sufficiently hot the coals are all raked out and the bread put in to bake in the heat.

Broad Weir Summary

Broad Weir ran from the junction of Merchant Street and Castle Mill Street with a very gentle rise to the junction of Philadelphia Street and Lower Castle Street. It took its name from a weir on the River Frome, this being near the site of a ducking stool which was on the north bank of the river. Today the river flows under the roadway of Broad Weir.

The street numbers of the buildings ran consecutively along the north side (Nos 1-20). On the south side the buildings were not numbered and much of this side was the old castle wall covered by advertising hoardings. Double tramlines ran along Broad Weir, going into Merchant Street and Lower Castle Street at either end. At the junction with Lower Castle Street, on the south side was a crude, narrow, whitewashed men's urinal, open to the elements.

The site of the Gem Cinema at 6-7 Broad Weir was badly damaged in December 1940 and Nos 19 and 20 were destroyed on 28 August 1942 — all other buildings in Broad Weir survived the Second World War.

Broad Weir still exists today, but all the buildings which survived have been demolished - the north side was rebuilt as shops in 1957 and still exist today (this is when Philadelphia Street disappeared, Penn Street widened and Lower Castle Street straightened). The south side is now a high wall forming the edge of Castle Park.

6-7 Vacant (Gem Cinema)

This building was the site of the Gem Cinema. It was originally called Broad Weir Hall (which in 1908 was used for religious services and had a billiard room and soup kitchen) and in 1909 it was refurbished and renamed Gem Cinema, the proprietors being The Gem Electric Theatre. - The cinema had 1,200 seats, the main entrance being on Broad Weir. There was a side entrance to the gallery in Merchant Street —along an alley next to a newsagents shop and up a flight of external iron steps. It was one of several 'flea pits' in Bristol - you came out with more than you went in! Young ladies played the piano and violin between films and young boys dropped apple cores from the gallery, aiming at the heads of patrons below!

The cinema closed in 1932 and the building was used for boxing. In the 1930s unlicensed boxing shows were frequently held in Bristol and many mismatches occurred. One such bout held at the Gem will be long remembered — on 12 February 1934 a scheduled six-round fight for a purse often shillings (50p) involved fourteen-year-old Jimmy Cooper whose opponent was eight years his senior. In the second round Jimmy threw a punch and, as his foot slipped, he fell and caught his chin on the canvas. The impact broke his neck and he probably died before being moved from the ring. His funeral brought Bristol to a standstill - the service was at the Dockland Settlement and the procession led to Avonview Cemetery at St George.

The premises closed for public use in 1936 and was intermittently used as a store until it was blitzed on 6/7 December 1940. The remaining shell of the building was demolished in 1957.

This building was used as a store - F. Brown & Sons had their main premises at 12 Narrow Wine Street.

9-12 W.H. Vowles & Sons Ltd (Eagle Brush Works) Brushmakers

This building survived the war and Vowles occupied it until its demolition for redevelopment of the area.

13 Percy Daniell - Baker

These premises had a bakery on site and supplied many local shops. Ashes from the fires which heated the ovens were constantly disposed of by dropping them through a manhole to the river below, despite several warnings from the local authority not to do so!

Between Nos 13 and 14 Broad Weir was an archway and passage to the Friends Meeting House in Quakers Friars.

This building was built in 1624 and Taylor Bros moved here in 1879 (this company was established in 1866 at premises in Baldwin Street). It was destroyed following an air raid on 28 August 1942, when Taylor Bros temporarily moved to 17 Philadelphia Street. In 1955 they moved to premises in Wilder Street; the company is still trading from this site today.

Work on the Derwent Valley Railway started in 1865 and the line was opened on 2nd December 1867 Four viaducts were constructed and a deep, 800 metres long cutting was dug near Rowlands Gill. The Nine Arches Viaduct was one of the major engineering feats of the railway; it is five hundred feet long and was built because the Earl of Strathmore would not allow the railway to pass through the Gibside Estate.

Stations were built at Blackhill, Shotley Bridge, Ebchester, Lintz Green, Rowlands Gill and Swalwell with High Westwood added in 1909. The line was single track between Blackhill and Lintz Green and double track between Lintz Green and the junction at Derwenthaugh. At its peak in 1914 the railway was carrying over half a million passengers a year with a regular goods traffic of timber, bricks and coal to Newcastle and iron ore to Consett.

The line also has a gruesome claim to fame in 1911 Lintz Green station was the scene of the inexplicable murder of the stationmaster by an unknown gunman the crime never solved.

By the 1920's, buses started to take the passengers. Freight fared better, continuing to deliver to collieries, coke-ovens, brickworks, paper-mills, dairy farms and the livestock mart at Blackhill, but even the freight traffic declined after W.W.II. High Westwood Station was closed in 1942 while the remaining stations survived into the 1950's but passenger numbers failed to recover after the war and one by one the stations closed. Shotley Bridge and Ebchester closed in September 1953, Swalwell and Lintz Green followed in December 1953. Rowlands Gill closed in February 1954 and Blackhill survived until May 1955. As road traffic became more efficient the freight service continued to decline until the line finally closed completely on 11th November 1963

The track was lifted in 1964 and for many years little was done to the line until Durham County Council developed it as a country park. The viaducts and bridges were repaired and the trackbed has now become an excellent cycle route and country path.

At Lydgetts Junction near Consett, the Derwent Valley route links with the Lanchester Valley Railway Path, Waskerley Way, and the Sustrans Consett-Sunderland cycle path, the latter two form part of the C2C (Sea to Sea) Cycle Route.

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) is faster than contemporary utility and attack helicopters of the 1960s. It is one of the few aircraft of that era, such as the C-130 Hercules and the UH-1 Iroquois, that is still in production and front line service with over 1,179 built to date. Its primary roles include troop movement, artillery emplacement and battlefield resupply. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks.

The Chinook was designed and initially produced by Boeing Vertol in the early 1960s. The helicopter is now produced by Boeing Rotorcraft Systems. Chinooks have been sold to 16 nations with the US Army and the Royal Air Force (see Boeing Chinook (UK variants)) being the largest users. The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters.
Design and development
Early developmentIn late 1956, the United States Department of the Army announced plans to replace the CH-37 Mojave, which was powered by piston engines, with a new, turbine-powered helicopter. Turbine engines were also a key design feature of the smaller UH-1 "Huey" utility helicopter. Following a design competition, in September 1958, a joint Army-Air Force source selection board recommended that the Army procure the Vertol medium transport helicopter. However, funding for full-scale development was not then available, and the Army vacillated on its design requirements. Some in the Army aviation corps thought that the new helicopter should be a light tactical transport aimed at taking over the missions of the old piston-engined H-21 and H-34 helicopters, and consequently capable of carrying about fifteen troops (one squad). Another faction in the Army aviation corps thought that the new helicopter should be much larger to be able to airlift a large artillery piece, and have enough internal space to carry the new MGM-31 Pershing Missile System.

In June 1958, the US Army awarded a contract to Vertol for the aircraft under the YHC-1A designation. The YHC-1A had a capacity for 20 troops. Three were tested by the Army to derive engineering and operational data. However, the YHC-1A was considered by most of the Army users to be too heavy for the assault role and too light for the transport role. The decision was made to procure a heavier transport helicopter and at the same time upgrade the UH-1 "Huey" as a tactical troop transport. The YHC-1A would be improved and adopted by the Marines as the CH-46 Sea Knight in 1962. The Army then ordered the larger Model 114 under the designation HC-1B. The pre-production Boeing Vertol YCH-1B made its initial hovering flight on 21 September 1961. In 1962 the HC-1B was redesignated the CH-47A under the 1962 United States Tri-Service aircraft designation system.

The CH-47 is powered by two turboshaft engines, mounted on each side of the helicopter's rear end and connected to the rotors by driveshafts. Initial models were fitted with engines of 2,200 horsepower. The counter-rotating rotors eliminate the need for an anti-torque vertical rotor, allowing all power to be used for lift and thrust. The ability to adjust lift in either rotor makes it less sensitive to changes in the center of gravity, important for the cargo lifting role. If one engine fails, the other can drive both rotors. The "sizing" of the Chinook was directly related to the growth of the Huey and the Army's tacticians' insistence that initial air assaults be built around the squad. The Army pushed for both the Huey and the Chinook, and this focus was responsible for the acceleration of its air mobility effort.

But I don't like HB's face from series 1, looks like he got a mustache.
2nd series Hellboy (HB with rocket) got a better face(more smooth) and brighter skin.
So I swapped their bodies. Now, I use HB face, body, and legs from series 2 for my HB trench coat.

Absolutely Wascomat

A visit to the Speedwash Laundromat in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.

An eclectic assortment of functional and non-functional laundry machines await you at this charming laundromat, located in the shadow of the Bourne Bridge at the Cape Cod Canal. Unfortunately, the largest machine, a 75 pound capacity Wascomat W244, was out of order this particular day. However three, 50 pound capacity, Wascomat W184's are prominently featured in their wash and extract cycles.

The lineup of other equipment at the Speed Wash Laundromat gives the launderer plenty of choices. From various other sizes of Wascomat Junior, Senior, and Giant washers to nostalgic top-loading Maytags, you're sure to find a machine that will match the personality of each load of laundry.

When it's time to dry, there's also a dizzying variety of dryers to choose from. Though all approximately the same size, there are various models manufactured by Speed Queen, WascoDry, American Dryer Corporation, Hoyt, and many, many more.

Among the non-working machines are another W184 with no front door, a Wascomat WE16, and two rare Hoyt Windsor I dryers in spectacular Harvest Gold!

The staff at the Speed Wash Laundromat are very pleasant, eager to offer laundry advice, and are always standing by ready to help in the (unlikely) event a machine you're using malfunctions.

As 2007 closes and 2008 begins, one of the great questions that hangs in the cynical European air is how America will carry itself in the world next year. From the outside, the coming election seems less about "the economy, stupid" and more about America's role in the future of the planet. I think it's even deeper than that. I think this election is about how America sees itself. That's not really an existential question, or a spiritual one; mostly, it's a practical question. In this election year, Americans are looking for leadership that can turn spiritual yearnings into practical realities. Al Gore is the kind of leader these times require. Not as President — God and the Electoral College have given him a different job. As it happens, Al is at work repositioning his country from the inside out as a leader in clean energy; and along the way restoring faith in the U.S. as a moral powerhouse that can lead a great, global spiritual revival as the temperature rises.

That's right, a spiritual revival. Because this apostle of all things digital is the first to admit that technology alone will not reverse the damage done. He says it's going to take "a shift in consciousness." This isn't loopy Sixties stuff, or I wouldn't tune in. Al is tough-minded. He marshals history to make his argument, and countless examples of civilizations changing course and attitudes midstream roll off his tongue.

For Al, 2008 is a rendezvous with destiny and an appointment with the enemy. The foe he sees is our own indifference to the future and a lack of faith in our ability to do anything about it. He stresses that through crisis we can find opportunity. His language is pretty Biblical, but, then, doesn't the Bible say something about floods? He is like an Old Testament prophet amped up with PowerPoint and an army of the world's scientists at his disposal. The right response to the global-warming crisis, he explains, will be a mosaic of solutions that will kick off a whole new economic boom, one that is low-carbon and high-productivity, with truly sustainable development, and an atlas for planet management — using not New Age technology but old age wisdom generating sustainable solutions.

Is he Noah or are we King Canute? Are we prepared to make difficult choices on behalf of children not yet born? We cannot let the children of the developing world become canaries in the coal mine. If the tide should rise by 3 ft. (1 m), there could be over 100 million climate refugees in low-lying areas such as Bangladesh. If the tide rises 20 ft. (6 m), it's not just the summer homes of rock stars that will take sail; 400 million poor people could be uprooted and at sea. And one man's flood is another's drought: as coastal areas in Africa are drowned, travel inland and anything that isn't underwater will be even more parched than before. Think Sudan. People forget that extreme poverty as a result of desertification explains much of that country's travails.

Over the past year, "mild green" (me) and "khaki green" (him) have talked about how the fight against extreme poverty in the developing world and the struggle against climate change can reinforce each other. The poorest will be hit first and hardest by climate change. We can help them adapt, but they can help us, too. Vulnerable as the poor are, they can be powerful allies in stopping the cycle of environmental damage and extreme poverty. With the poor as partners we can slow overpopulation — as we must, because more population means more pollution. And we can help developing countries rev up their economies in a cleaner way than we did during the Industrial Revolution. The choices of the poor affect us, just as ours affect them; we are all part of one world, one moral universe, sharing one oxygen tank.

Desmond Tutu often uses the word ubuntu, meaning "I am because we are." It's my favorite epithet, an ode to interdependence. When I told Al that, he responded with Gandhi: Satyagraha, meaning "hold tight to the truth."

Personally, I'm trying to live up to both words, but it's hard. Like a lot of folks, I've got a lot on my plate without trying to make sure the dishwasher liquid is in a biodegradable container. (It is, but were it not for the eco-warrior with whom I share a bed, I would have fallen behind.) As Al leaves our house, I fall over myself to explain that my fancy car runs on ethanol, then laugh nervously, like when you meet a parish priest in the supermarket and it turns into confession.

Al isn't like that at all. He leads from the front, and if some sheep in the family stray, he's not stressed. He's not a zealot. Leaders often shout orders; generals bark; bellicose preachers, to save our souls, get gothic on our asses. But Al speaks in measured tones. He shows slides. He has an almost embarrassing faith in the power of facts to persuade both believer and skeptic. His enduring and overarching trait is, as it turns
