Fixed hand pump

We are a conservation organisation - and we are part of life at Chimpangha Village. Just down the road from our base is another hand pump to pump water, and when it broke down recently, the villagers asked us to help them. We said if they could collect money from everyone for the part that was required (MK 20, or around 1p per person) we would buy the part on our visit to Blantyre 150 km away, and install it.

Job done, easy for us with our Land Rover but the villagers have no motor transport so the trip to Blantyre would have taken far more money for someone than the cost of the part.

CAST IRON GEAR PUMPS - GEAR PUMPS

CAST IRON GEAR PUMPS - CONDENSATE PUMP MAINTENANCE

Cast Iron Gear Pumps

cast iron gear pumps

    gear pumps
  • (Gear Pump) Gear Pumps are used for some engine oil pumps and hydraulic pumps. The concept involves generating oil flow by two gears meshing together in a relatively tight enclosure. The size of the gears and the tightness of the enclosure will determine what the pump is capable of generating.

  • (Gear pump) A small pump consisting of a casing enclosing a driven gear wheel in mesh with a second gear wheel, the fluid being carried from the suction to the delivery side of the pump in the spaces between the teeth.

  • (Gear pump) A gear pump uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid by displacement. They are one of the most common types of pumps for hydraulic fluid power applications. Gear pumps are also widely used in chemical installations to pump fluid with a certain viscosity.

    cast iron
  • A hard, relatively brittle alloy of iron and carbon that can be readily cast in a mold and contains a higher proportion of carbon than steel (typically 2.0–4.3 percent)

  • Firm and unchangeable

  • Cast iron usually refers to grey iron, but also identifies a large group of ferrous alloys, which solidify with a eutectic. The colour of a fractured surface can be used to identify an alloy.

  • an alloy of iron containing so much carbon that it is brittle and so cannot be wrought but must be shaped by casting

  • extremely robust; "an iron constitution"

Cast Iron Fry Pans

my pride and joy. Two cast iron fry pans. The smaller one I have had over 10 years. I rescued it from a thrift store where someone had "thoughtfully" scoured it to the metal. Shiver.
I got the big one from Sur La Table a couple years ago. It is only now starting to get the cure I like. The smaller one could be skated on, its so smooth. Ahhh.
Both have recently survived someone using soap on them.

musée des arts et métiers 5

The Musee des Arts et Metiers, (Museum of Arts and Crafts) is a museum in Paris that houses the collection of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers (National Conservatory of Arts and Industry), which was founded in 1794 as a depository for the preservation of scientific instruments and inventions.

In 1794, Abbot Henri Gregoire founded the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers, designed to be a collection of machines, tools and models created in the fields of technology and science. The Conservatory, established in 1802 and located in the old priory of Saint Martin des Champs, was also an institution of education and the fore-runner of the Musee des Arts et Metiers.

Since its foundation, the museum has been housed in the previosly deserted priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs in the rue Reaumur in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris.

The Benedictine priory and church of Saint Martin des Champs was built in the mid-11th century, the first Gothic structure to be built in Paris. However, this was destroyed and replaced with the church that stands there now, built in the 13th century.
Improvements on it continued through the years; Henri III constructed the large portal on rue St. Martin; in 1626, Mansart built the high altar in the apse; a cloister was completed in 1720.

During the French Revolution the priory was pillaged and the monks executed, leaving it deserted until the Conservatory occupied it in 1802.

During renovations in 1993, archaeological discoveries confirmed the existence of a Merovingian necropolis located beneath the nave of the medieval church, dating from the 6th-7th centuries. Over 100 plaster coffins were found.

The Musee des Arts et Metiers is organized into 7 departments: Scientific Instruments; Materials; Construction; Communication; Energy; Mechanics; Transportation. Each department is displayed chronologically.

The museum begins with Scientific Instruments, exhibiting tools of astronomy used for determining the place of the sun in the zodiac, weights and measures such as Charlemagne's Pile, the royal standard of weight at the end of the 15th century and Pascal's calculators, designed by Blaise Pascal when he was 19 years old.

The equipment of Antoine Lavoisier's laboratory from the mid-1700s is exhibited. Lavoisier is regarded as the father of modern chemistry.

The equipment used by Foucault for determining the speed of light is displayed, which he measured while working at the Observatory of Paris in 1862. Numerous other exhibits chronicle scientific development up to the 1990s and robotic technology.

In the Materials department we discover the creation of glass, brick and fabrics, including the development of looms and the factories which produce the vast quantities of the materials used today.

In the Construction section of the museum one can see the model used in 1690 for constructing Jules Mansart's Eglise du Dome at the Hotel les Invalides.

Also exhibited is the model for constructing the dome of what was the Wheat Market of 1809, now the Bourse, the building for the Paris stock market, located adjacent to the Garden of Les Halles. This dome, built in 1763, was one of the first metal structures to be constructed in France.

In the Communication department are exhibited printing presses, typewriters, telephone equipment from the early 1900s, telegraph systems from 1860, radio development from 1924 onward, the history of cameras, phonographs, recording instruments for producing sound for cinema and satellites, with a model of the Telstar which enabled the first live trans-Atlantic television transmission in 1962 from New York to England.

The Energy department displays the history of the machinery used for harnessing every form of energy including steam, wind, electrical, atomic and solar.

The Mechanics department of the Musee des Arts et Metiers is impressive with its collection of the development of mechanical machinery. Here are several "hands-on" exhibits where one can operate pulleys and pumps and gears.

The Transportation department shows everything from the bicycle to rocket ships. This is the final department visited in the museum and an impressive section of it is located in the chapel of the old church.
Here we find the first "horseless carriages", steam powered trains, propeller driven racing cars, modern cars cut in half and complete airplanes which are suspended overhead, dramatically contrasting with the ceiling of this medieval church.

Also found in this part of the museum is an in-motion Foucault Pendulum. This 156 year old demonstration continues to fascinate and prove the measurable reality of Earth's rotation. The actual orb used by Foucault on February 3, 1851, at the Paris Observatory, his first public demonstration of his pendulum, is exhibited here and protected within a glass case.

The museum, which underwent major renovation in 1990, includes an additional building adjacent to the abbey, with larger objects

THE GORDON C. EVANS HMAS SYDNEY 1948-1952 ALBUM: The carrier in her name port.

THE GORDON C. EVANS HMAS SYDNEY 1948-1952 ALBUM: The carrier in her name port.

1804. THE GORDON EVANS STORY - CONCLUSION.

CPO Gordon Evans left the Royal Navy in 1955 as an Air Articier Second Class [ his decision not to sign on for another 10 years had denied him 'a 'First Class' rating.

Gordon returned to his old home town area of Chatham, with his wife Sylvia and a young family of daughters [three eventually]. Gordon had been half-way across the word with the Navy - Ceylon, India, Australia and New Zealand, and points between. But it was in the year of his discharge, aged 30, Gordon saw the great city of London, less than 30 miles from his hometown, for the very first time. He and the family, he says, were 'goggle-eyed 'like American tourists.'

Gordon was working for a milling company, CAV Ltd at Rochester, eventually as a bench instructor in the firm's Engineering School. Becoming a little concerned about the future prospects for his children in the gloom of postwar Britain.
in 1961 Gordon and his family migrated to New Zealand where he was to take up
position with Tasman Empire Airways Ltd [TEAL], but found that they would not start him immediately, because his artificer's tools [six box crates] were still coming by ship.

A walk along the waterfront in Auckland brought him alternative position on the same morning that this news was delivered. Passing a shipping repair firm Gordon paused to look at an ancient piece of machinery, of a kind that he's once worked upon, and the boss came out to chat. No-one could get it working, he said. Gordon said he could - and he had a job immediately! -

In 1963, the family emigrated again to Australia where Gordon set up a new Engineering School for Apprentices and Tool Setters for Lucas Ltd in Melbourne. He worked there until the firm closed in 1980, and went on to turn his hand to gardening. From his home in Frankston, he has worked as a gardener and turned his artificers skills to many odd jobs in the area.

In his little spare time, he spent 29 years patiently re-building a marvelous 1929 American R.E.O 'Flying Cloud' sports sedan which is sometimes used for wedding receptions in the area, and which he takes on vintage car rallies.

Among other interests he became a a founder and secretary of the Amateur Winemaking Guild for 29 years, and was also a long time secretary of the HMAS Sydney Association, which eventually merged with the Vietnam Logistic Support Veteran's Association, which is from the carrier's fast troop transport years. His daughters gained university educations and became professionals. Sylvia began an Arts degree at 65 and completed it, something Gordon feels could never have been done back in Britain.

This photograph also appears in the RAN Sea Power Australia Centre's website page for 805 Squadron RAN.

A tangibly English man in manner, still only 85 years old now, quite late in life Gordon astounded his daughters by a resolute decision to take out Australian citizenship.

Gordon and Sylvia Evans have lived at their home in Frankston for 45 years.

Mr Evans has been enormously generous in making his photo albums available for this Unofficial RAN Centenary 1911-2011 Photostream. Approached within one day, he allowed albums which also contained precious family photos to be taken away on trust, and I spoent the afternoon with him, returning them yesterday. I would be glad if anyone else who has also enjoyed them might let him know that here.

tank on 4 october

Current state of the tank. Removed one dead Cory cat (name, Robert Paulson),dead of unknown causes, 1 shrimp moult, 1 excessively powerful Stingray filtration unit. Added, 7 blue neons, 1 albino pleco, 1 cannibal snail, 1 galileo style thermometer tower.

Working on outfiting a more appropriate level of filtration. Need to stir the soup and filter stuff out, but that Stingray thing was WAY TOO POWERFUL, we think that cory actually died of exhaustion. (they like stagnant water) The shrimp became far more active when we took out the stingray and just subbed in a smalled submersible pump to keep things moving. That's not real filtration, obviously. The plants and fish should keep a decent balance, but it's not ideal. Will work it out eventually.

Fish tank, upper tank

Fish tank, upper tank

The 1/2 tank on the left goes up top, gets filled with water, and then flushes the water down through the growbeds and back into the fishtank.

The fishtank is on the right. Obviously it will be lying on its side. The pump attaches to the plumbing coming out of the "top."
