After a long day/week at work, I have a penchant for napping all strewn about the living room like a fat cat. It's been a while since I've done cloing, which I've combined with reflections and low light conditions.

Dust Mop

This dog was found by the rangers at Steph's work yesterday. It had no collar, was ragged and dirty, had nowhere to go, so S brought it home, fed and washed it. It is a very nice little animal, though I usually don't care much for dust mop dogs. I am calling it Dennis. Dennis, your balls have to go.

Dave's cleaning the floors at his parents' house in preparation for the night's dinner party. The house was under semi-completed renovation, so there was lots of dust to be mopped up. Hence the hilarious protective slippers, dust mop and growling pug.

Is that the reason for the death of Carolyn Moore, the young, beautiful project manager of the government project; or does the reason lie closer to home? Kevin Moore, the disingenuous husband of the victim, has the best of motives, perhaps, but his grief at her death appears genuine. Chase Pollard, wife of the senior partner, has a strong motive for killing Caroline and appears a good candidate, but she has, perhaps, extracted revenge in a more satisfyingly feminine way.
Police Detective Bernard Knowlton and Sgt. Corn must find out what would make someone take the enormous risk of killing her at work. Other employees of the firm, past and present, have reasons to dislike Caroline.

Evans House

The Evans House was built in circa 1904 by H. K. Evans, an engineer at the Roane Iron Company. It is of Edwardian style and retains much of the original features. The entrance hall is lined with dark oak wainscoting and woodwork. The ceiling with its boxed-in beams and the elegant oak staircase that soars upward three floors all add to the feeling of luxury and ambiance.

The home is currently owned by Stephen Brown, the founder of Glitterville, an international company that makes ornaments for all seasons. Items from his "One Hundred 80 Degrees" were on sale in a tent in the yard.

Thumper's Nest

Cranston Herd digs v2.0. The Cranston Herd is about to get its long promised renovation. The plans call for an insulated raised sub-floor complete with a new porcelain tiled floor and backsplash, full width floor drain for easy floor cleaning, a central vacuum system vented outside, finished ceiling, automatic lighting, and a ventillation fan. Details of hay storage, automatic watering (reverse osmosis), and general storage are yet to be finalised. One thing I do know, the herd's three story condos will be getting elevated onto a plinth or risers; recent back issues are making that a desirable option. The herd will be free to come and go from their condos while safely contained behind a waist (mine, not theirs) height tempered glass partition when I am not present. This sketch just allows me to plan and scheme in an appropriate scale. Details will be added to the CAD sketch on appropriate layers. Thumper does not yet have a beer fridge, but the sink is indispensible in helping to look after nine rabbits. The following summer I hope to build them a summer home. Spoiled rotten!

That's eh, toilet paper mostly. From the second floor bathrooms. Except instead of continuing through the sewage system, it backed up into the lab, and spread all over the floor. At times, a fountain of sewage would erupt from the floor drain.

The plumbing for the second floor bathrooms have been rerouted-- the sag in the pipe under the TEM remains, but only lab waste water flows through that stretch.

Can I Sit With You, Too? Cover Art by Lea Hernandez

Lea's notes:

This piece was *entirely* scratch-built from cardboard, brass tubing, fabric, etc. I made the dolls, their clothes, the music stands and chairs.

I also lit and photographed it.

The only thing I didn't make is the monkey hanging in the background. My daughter Summer made that--from scratch!

Both dolls are wearing hand-sewn clothes, the platypus costume on the doll on the right, Peri, is removable. The claws and beak are Apoxie-Sculpt.

The music stands and trombone are made from brass wire, tubing and sheet copper. (I bought a scrap bag of copper tubing and a packet of scrap metal sheeting) from Hobby Lobby.

The legs of the chairs are brass tubing, the seats are plastic shampoo bottles.
The trombone is brass tubing, some sheet brass, a small metal bell, an eraser and hot glue!

The set is all built from cardboard. The posters and brick wall on the left side are from Mayang's textures.

The Emerald City gates are cardboard, beads, a broken piece of jewelry, fine-grain glitter and gold-star printed netting. The monkey on the gate is a felt toy Summer made that survived a house fire two years ago.

The "grass" is some hideous green...stuff I bought a couple years ago for a buck. It was so weird I had to have it.

The stage was raised a bit so that the lights underneath would add shine by reflecting off the floor of the set (which was painted metallic red).

The "poppies" on the ground are small ribbons roses cut from ribbons with multi-colored roses on it. Summer did that for me.

A new graphic novel starring Fritz, Fritz, and...Fritz!
The third in Gilbert Hernandez’s line of original hardcovers featuring Love and Rockets’ “Fritz” in her guise as a Z-movie actress (the first two were Chance in Hell and The Troublemakers) is a trippy thriller that stars Fritz in no fewer than three roles.

A beautiful waitress (Fritz, of course) and her hospital nurse brother (also Fritz) visit their estranged father, a once successful but now retired writer (amazingly enough, also Fritz), in order to find out the true reason why their mother committed suicide. When dad’s health fails, the siblings are then more concerned with the money he might leave them.

The story weaves in and out of reality and hallucination and possibly back in forth in time, and to complicate things further, the sister is sexually obsessed with a mysterious man throughout the tale — or is it her brother (at one point posing as his sister so that he might gain his and her inheritance) that is so hot and bothered by this mystery stud? And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. There’s also a venture into ghost territory, with frauds bilking the gullible and Fritz’s character(s) right in the middle. 120 pages of black-and-white comics

This is me, drawn by Janneke Tangelder on the 13th of February 2001. The drawing was a birthday present and it comes with a story.
From sixteen until twenty four I was a member of a group of volunteers that organised exhibitions, performances and concerts in my home town Neerijnen in the Betuwe. In those days we had the use of Het Stroomhuis, a former transformer station of the electric supply company. It lay at the edge of a wood, a meadow away from my parent’s house. It was the sort of disused, solid and peaceful industrial building where you immediately feel at ease. Brick walls with metal emergency stairs running along them, stone stairs with metal banisters, pale yellow and black tiles on the floor, numerous passages and rooms with iron doors – and three magnificent naturally lit rooms. Art galleries in the big cities would kill for such a space.
We organised about six exhibitions annually. With each new exhibition and each new performance Het Stroomhuis seemed like a different building. You could do anything with it, maybe because it had lost its original function. There was no heating, so we could only use it in spring, summer and autumn, even then we often had to keep our coats on as the thick walls held onto the cold for a long time.
The first exhibition of 2000 consisted of paintings, drawings and prints by Wendelien Schonfeld and Janneke Tangelder. Here I actually got to see a large amount of work by Janneke for the first time. The great breakfast still lifes. Train passengers. Lots of pencil drawings depicting figures in smoky cafes.
We spent three days in the beginning of April on the installation and everyday there was an upbeat and happy atmosphere in Het Stroomhuis. As it happened, the first day was my birthday. Wendelien had brought some homemade cakes from Amsterdam. Janneke had come to Neerijnen with twenty-three candles. They had a pot of daffodils with them, not just for my birthday but also to celebrate the spring. On top of this I received two framed… not sure how to describe them. Drawings of heads in profile, where instead of faces there were thin chains which you could move and shake so that all sorts of different faces appeared each time. I remembered these kind of games from my childhood, just like I remembered blowing out the candles. I was an old fashioned birthday boy that day.
The chain faces actually represented something else, as was written on the back. I was allowed to exchange one of them for a portrait of myself, to be drawn by Janneke. The other one could be exchanged for a portrait by Wendelien.
I posed ten times for them in 2000 and 2001, an afternoon each time in their separate Amsterdam studios. These sessions were always just as festive as the birthday in Neerijnen. Wendelien and Janneke made food and jokes and drawings. They stared at me and I stared back at them. It was interesting to see how differently they worked. Wendelien was very serious when it came to the drawing. She would sit straight up and with a deep concentration, stare intensely at me and her drawing. She produced one or two complete drawings during each session, often using several colours. She would listen to what Janneke and I discussed, saying little herself. If she felt like making a contribution she would stop drawing for a while and carefully concentrate on what she had to say. It always made sense.
Janneke would sit all relaxed, with her legs crossed and a small sketch book on her lap – that is, if she sat at all, because she would often walk around. In order to better understand the dimensions of my body or head she’d move a little from right to left, backwards and forwards. When she returned to her original position, it wasn’t her old position anymore: she now knew what she couldn’t see from there. Sometimes she would draw while walking, scratching passionately with every step as if she was moulding me with her pencil. She made lots of small sketches per session.
Eventually it wasn’t just the one portrait I got from Janneke. She gave me a pile of drawings, and even after a few years she would come up with another drawing she had found somewhere. I think I’ve got the whole lot of them at home now. She also made a painting of my head based on sketches and photos, but she doesn’t think it looks like me. ‘It could be a brother of yours.’
The drawing shown here is especially interesting because it also reveals a bit of the interior of Janneke’s studio boat. By standing or sitting there for whole afternoons I got to know the place very well. Behind me is Janneke’s piano, which she uses to study her singing parts and holds choir rehearsals with. Since then a bookcase has been built around the instrument, but ten years ago framed works by befriended colleagues hung above it. To the right you can just see the kitchen door opening.

This is what time I finished the room! And that's having my husband's help on a quad and a half! And I still got up and went to church service!

Water leak caused sagging floor.

So I evidently had a very tiny pinhole in my water line feeding the kitchen sink. My floor got wet and sagged badly. Now that I tore the floor up I know why it drooped so much in this spot. The joist is extra wide to accommodate the sink drain pipe. The leak is fixed, now I need some extra time off to put down new flooring and tile.

The new building that went up on the corner of City Road attempted an approximation to its predecessor's roofline, although it had only three floors instead of four. I seem to remember that the development had some idiotic name ...something Meads I think. But Oh! those thousands of identical, smooth, homogeneous, mass-produced, machine-made, relentlessly durable, evenly-coloured bricks. They were probably made in somewhere like Bedford and look the same wherever they are used, from Aberdeen to Bournemouth. I doubt if they will ever weather or look other than vulgarly brand-new. No Toadflax or Oxford Ragwort will ever take root between them.
The traffic lights came in July 1986. The junk shops have melted away ...probably discouraged in what is now a conservation area due for gentrification. Mind you, when I took this photo I found myself standing in the doorway of a massage parlour.

Guest Bathroom

Nothing terribly fussy about this bathroom, it's done with functionality in mind, using simple homogeneous tiles for both floor & ceiling. lighting is important and we tried very much to make this bathroom airy and less claustraphobic.

Today’s photo is a story of Man vs. Wild. It’s a case of nature vs. nutter (with me being the nutter in question).
For months, we’ve been plagued by a possum in our house. It’s common in Australia to get possums in your ceiling. Our possum lives between the ceiling of downstairs and the floor of upstairs. Yes, they’re cute. And yes, they wee and poo and make a mess. If you’re really unlucky (and, to be fair, if the possum is really unlucky) they die in your ceiling or your wall and if you can’t get out the body they stink up the place.
I like possums. I just don’t like them living in my roof. When it moves around under the floor, Gizmo my groodle follows it around the house. It’s like someone is running a magnet under the floor attracting the dog (okay, in that scenario, my dog’s nose is metallic).
Anyway, I’ve slowly been starting a campaign against Lucy (that’s what we call her). It’s a war of minds. It’s a battle of wits, with me being the half-wit. Think of me as Elmer Fudd and the possum as Bugs Bunny.
On the weekend, Meg and I possum proofed the garage. I know it enters the house through the garage, because sometimes it likes to sit up high on the garage and wee in my direction when it looks at me. It’s personal. Sometimes I’ve been tempted to wee back. Having possum proofed the garage, my concern was that I trapped the possum out, and not in. I put a trap in the garage (it won’t hurt the possum, it’s just so I can release it outside). It’s seen the trap. I know it’s seen the trap because it looked at it, looked at me, did a wee, and moved on. So last night, when I heard noises at 2am, I began a night ritual sitting on my front steps in my pyjamas, with the garage door open to let the possum out. About an hour later, I saw a possum outside and told it to stay out while I closed the door. Back to bed to finally get to asleep just as the possum noise began again. Back downstairs and I saw Lucy trying to get back in. I told her to wait, so I could go back upstairs to get my iPhone. Top left is a portrait of Lucy at 3.38am with lighting by a torch. It's grainy in low light, but it's also the earliest I've taken a picture of the day in my 365. Bottom left is the trap, which she ignores. Top right is how I’ve blocked her path to freedom. And bottom right is the report card my girls wrote yesterday, to document this war of wills.
