The black X1857 bike.
This is the bike I bought from working bikes a few years ago. I think the bike started out as an Evans but I am not sure what model or year as it was sort of pieced together with random parts from other bikes. I stripped the frame of paint, cleaned everything up and painted it flat black. New parts include the Springer fork, headset, headlight, ape hanger bars and grips, BMX style peddles, a used saddle from a swap meet and a cheap tail light repainted to match. The rims are original, sort of, the rear was kind of cruddy looking so I cleaned it up as much as I could and gave it a coat of black, and it has a Bendix coaster brake that I will need to rebuild at some point. The front rim is secondhand; the one that came with the bike was too small.
I fabricated the mount for the headlight with some angled aluminum, then fitted it in the stem of an old BMX I bought for parts. The “tank” insert is a piece of ? inch plywood painted flat black with the lettering and skull painted in antique white. The insert is held in place with small leather straps and stainless nuts and bolts.
For the most part this is the finished bike; I may get a nicer set of rims at some point, as well as another saddle. I have the original handlebars and stem that I have set up in track racer style.

- A motorcycle that meets the legal requirements for use on ordinary roads
- A bicycle that is suitable for use on ordinary roads, as opposed to a mountain bike
- A how-to or a how to is an informal, often short, description of how to accomplish some specific task. A how-to is usually meant to help non-experts, may leave out details that are only important to experts, and may also be greatly simplified from an overall discussion of the topic.

Abandoned & Existing Madison County Railroad Lines
Abandoned Railroad Lines In My Area:
Green=Abandoned Norfolk Southern(NS) lines (ex- Illinois Terminal Railroad[ITC]), and were abandoned in 1999. A major portion of them were owned by Troy & Eastern Railway, originally. The portion between Horseshoe Lake and Mont Junction is still railbanked due to large untapped coal reserves left in Maryville, Collinsville, and Troy.
Orange=Abandoned Union Pacific(UP) line (ex- Chicago & North Western[CNW]) abandoned March 2000, and I should also mention that before CNW bought out this line in the 1950s, it was originally built & owned by the Litchfield & Madison(L&M) Railway, UP tried to railbank the line and was unable to reach an agreement with the STB so they abandoned. This represents one of 21% of abandoned lines in America that had been attempted to become railbanked and failed. Had these 21% of the lines been approved for railbanking, 56.8% of lines abandoned since railbanking began in 1982 would have been railbanked, but in stead, due to the 21% that weren't approved, only 36.8% of lines abandoned since 1982 were railbanked. In total, there are 14,184 miles of post-1982 abandoned railroad lines in America, and in stead of 8056.5 miles being saved by railbanking, only the 36.8% (or 5079 miles) of those have actually been railbanked. For some reason the Surface Transportation Board(STB) denied 21% of the railbanking requests. How stupid.
Yellow=Abandoned NS Line (ex- Wabash) Spur Line to downtown Edwardsville, abandoned 1988.
Black=Abandoned NS Line (ex- Nickel Plate Road[NKP]), abandoned in March of 2000, originally built in 1882 as a narrow gauge line (the Toledo, Cincinnati & St. Louis) and converted to narrow gauge in 1889, and was the first railroad built through Glen Carbon. It eventually in the 1920s was merged with the New York, Chicago, & St. Louis, more commonly known as the Nickel Plate Road.
White=Abandoned lines I don't know about (only two small spurs)
Red=Still existing & operating train tracks
Purple=Abandoned Burlington Northern(BN) line to Brighton, IL, abandoned because BN acquired trackage rights on UP trackage through far northern Edwardsville (and Gard, IL). Abandoned in the 1970s.
Blue=Abandoned Illinois Central Railroad (IC) line, abandoned in 1982. In the 1980s, the IC rationalized and tore out the majority of their system, keeping very few of their lines. When they purchased the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio(GMO) Railroad, a more direct route from Springfield to St. Louis originally belonging to the GMO was favored over the original IC route so the IC abandoned.
There are 7 mainlines that have been abandoned in Madison County, and a spur line. Madison County has sufffered more railroad abandonments than anywhere else in the St. Louis area, and most of the lines that were abandoned were abandoned between 1999-2001. Four were abandoned by the NS, one by UP, one by BN, and one by the ITC. The one line that I think could have most likely been saved was the ex-NKP Cloverleaf Sub, as the BNSF could have bought it to connect between their St. Louis lines and their Beardstown Subdivision in Sorento, Illinois, which, had they bought it, would have eliminated their need for trackage rights on the UP Pana Sub, which connects them to their Beardstown Sub from St. Louis at Toland, Illinois (near Walshville, or about 10 miles south of Litchfield). The BNSF still uses trackage rights on the Pana Sub, and operates on those trackage rights daily, so they could have saved the ex-Cloverleaf. But, that is a moot point.
Dave Lloyd 753 O/S road Frame
Dave Lloyd 'Concept 90' Road Frame. appx 1989
Quite unusual in being built from 753 O/S tubing, very similar to my Vernon Barker frame in Columbus EL O/S.
This is where my bike collection started! having dusted down my Hetchins, from the back of my garage 27 year's of inactivity, (both myself and Hetch ).
I bought this frame via eBay..because it was for sale in my local City of Norwich. (oh what a slippery...but good..slope to follow).
I had , post purchase, read some bad things about Lloyd frames..with many a joke saying..how long before it broke?...
All rubbish IMHO...because I believe they were not built by him, but by Argos Cycles...and as such, early production was probably handled soley by Arthur Needham..who was taught by the great Stan Pike.
It's seen a lot of use..from a very fast veteran rider, whom I purchased it from..and owned by him from New..a big, heavy rider ( both of us over 200 lbs) like myself...and of course, has never broken...

Ralph & Robin
Brooch: Ralph and Robin – photo brooch made from a photo Tom took of Ralph from his studio window one day when Ralph, a long time subcontractor of TMD, came to pick up his "list". Ralph was driving his motorcycle that day, as he was many times when he came to get his list.
Brooch Materials: Bronze, anodized aluminum, acrylic, brass, stainless steel, photo
Panel Materials: Wood, acrylic, stainless steel, objects found on the slab of Ralph's house post-Katrina.
"Ralph & Robin"
I miss Ralph. I am always going to miss him.
I don’t know how Ralph found us initially. Maybe it was a flyer on a local coffee house bulletin board, or an ad in the paper or word of mouth that we had an opening for an “apprentice” level job makingjewelry, but his appearance and involvement with me and our studio was one of the more delightful periods in our history.
Ralph was enthusiastic, hard working, dedicated and responsible. He was working three jobs because he had a dream. That dream was to build his own house for his family, his wife Robin and a little boy Ralph Jr. So, he worked for us, did his own leather making work at home, and had two large paper routes that he got up every day at 4am to do before he did everything else. He worked and saved and eventually had enough money saved to buy a lot, right next to his mom’s house in an area of New Orleans known as Gentilly Woods. The lot was immediately adjacent to the London Avenue Canal, so this meant there was a big wall at the back of his lot that ran from way down by Dillard University out to Lake Pontchartrain.
Several years later he was ready to start on the house. He designed the house, contracted the project, did a lot of the grunt work himself and built a beautiful two story brick home with a two car garage and a studio workshop for his many projects and hobbies (he was big into radio controlled model boats). During a visit with him we walked the property and went out to see his fishing boat on a trailer at the back of the yard. I noticed puddles of water here and there near the base of the flood wall and wondered aloud to him about what they indicated…”Oh,” Ralph said, “They come and go, I guess there’s a little seepage from the canal comin’ through there. He wasn’t worried about them.
After working in-house with us for a number of years, and, having moved on quickly from the apprentice to artisan level, Ralph requested a move to become a sub-contractor for us. He had his home studio fully functional, was making some of his own jewelry and wanted to be around more for his son as Robin was working full-time as well in hospital administration. So, after that, we didn’t see much of him except when he delivered his work to us on his motorcycle (really a crotch rocket, we called him Mad Max) and at our annual company holiday party at the infamous Rock’N’ Bowl.
Ralph was into his hobbies to say the least — Especially his motorcycles. He actually installed a very large steel U ring with a huge hardened steel chain as they poured the slab for his house in what would be the garage where he would chain up his very valuable and expensive bike. That’s planning ahead! He was a member of a local motorcycle club and he and his pals would ride big circuits out on the highways around southern Louisiana on the weekends. At some point, they encountered another club with whom they, apparently, had a contentious rivalry with. In November of 2004, a member of that rival club escalated that rivalry to murder. On a Sunday morning, Ralph had gone out to get the morning papers. For whatever unknown reason, this rival club member decided to settle some unknown grudge by stalking Ralph, sneaking up behind him at as he exited the store and shot him twice in the back of the head.
I can hardly write this...I can hardly think it. There are murders all the time in New Orleans....always have been...probably always will be. And while most are rooted in the contemporary insanity of the disadvantaged drug-gang-teenager urban American gestalt, every now and again, one of these assaults strikes close to home, it penetrates the emotional perimeter of friends and family. This was, most assuredly...one of those. Senseless loss over a senseless slight or insult. Mind-numbing senselessness.
I made little silver "R" pins for all of his family members and our staff and we all went to his funeral. I had to make a lot more of those pins when everyone there got a look at them and I still get requests for more 6 years later.
August 2005
Robin and Ralph Jr. evacuated "the house that Ralph built" and New Orleans to Houston just days ahead of Hurricane Katrina in late August. Katrina came in on the 29th. The same storm surge that came down the Mr. Go (MRGO) and devastated the Lower 9th Ward pushed into lake Ponchartrain through the Rigolets outlet to the Gulf of Mexico and forced its way down t

"65 Roses" is what some children with Cystic Fibrosis call their disease because the words are much easier for them to pronounce.
In early June, my 29 year old Godson was about to be married. Three days before the ceremony, he was in a near-fatal motorcycle accident caused by an animal that ran out in front of his bike. Miraculously, in intensive care for a week, Doug survived yet another stumbling block in his life, having been born with CF and not supposed to live beyond 2 years. On Saturday, less than a week after our devastating storm, the wedding took place in a town still occupied by power workers from all over the country who were restoring electricity lost, due to Hurricane Irene. (I so wanted to do a stranger interview with one of the amazing crew who was staying at our hotel, but circumstances just weren't conducive; however, I was able to thank an exhausted worker as we passed one another in the hall. He was from Florida and had just come to Connecticut from Maryland).
To say this has been the most emotional week of my life is an understatement. Fortunately we were able to procure a room at an inn where not only did we have power, but were able to bathe in a nice hot tub of water! My last post was uploaded with a slow internet connection, so I was unable to respond in any detail to all of you dear friends who have sent best wishes our way.
We are home now, both sporting lousy head colds, but glad to be over the hurdle. Our pump is still working, but we're not comfortable drinking the tinted well water as yet.
Presently, I'm just counting my blessings that my dear Godson is happily celebrating his marriage to an amazing woman who nursed him through his accident. There was a whole lot of celebrating on Saturday evening, believe me!
I was so touched that "yellow roses" were themed throughout. The story behind the title is a touching one which I can share at another time. A donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation had been made in each guest's name.
PHEW, what a week!

IRON MAN - IRON WOMAN
Voce vai gastar muitas horas treinando toda semana. E ira gastar varias horas pensando, sonhando, conversando, lendo e surfando na internet, sobre tudo que diz respeito ao Ironman. O Ironman vai consumir voce. Sua vida vai girar em volta de treinar, dormir (deitar por volta das 21:00hs e se levantar antes dos entregadores de jornais), comer e beber (voce vai querer comer tudo o que ver);
Envelhecer e reviver o ontem e agradecer o hoje, e nao pensar no amanha.
Envelhecer e tristeza e alegria, resignacao e esperanca, valentia e medo. E presuncao, arrependimento, humildade e gloria.

A small town Nordby on the island Samsoe, one of the best preserved half-timbered and thatched roof villages we have, and a big tourist goal. In the 1700- and 1800 century there were around 50 farms, a rectory and a bell tower all build in half-timber, and gathered around the village pond with all the fields around. They had ships in the sea so quiet a wealthy community at that time.
Now a days a lot of the house has been bought of people from the mainland and a lot of artist have moved here, or the houses have been turned into summerhouses.

Cars honked & I got to explain to some curious drivers what Chiditarod is...

Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Princess Leia were not here this day...
I am a big Star Wars fan and I was extremely happy to be here although one can get bit disappointed by the empty couliesses, since the film stars are not present. The scenery here is amazing with the beautiful bright pink/yellow desert sands and the endless blue sky. The beautiful road which led here we took on a fantastic quad bike ride in very high speed and to see this film set was "La piece de resistance"...
