Civil Wars. AD 68-69. AR Denarius (3.55 g, 5h). Revolt of Vindex issue. Vienna (Vienne) mint. Struck March-May AD 68. Victory standing left on globe, holding wreath and palm frond / S P Q R within laurel wreath. Cf. RIC I 72 var. (oak wreath); cf. AM 77 var. (same); cf. RSC 420 var. (same).

Gaius Julius Vindex (37-69): Roman senator, governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, first to revolt against the emperor Nero.
Gaius Julius Vindex was a member of the former royal family of Aquitania, which had lost its throne when Julius Caesar had subdued their country. However, it was still an influential family, and the father of Julius Vindex became a Roman senator after the emperor Claudius had permitted noblemen from Gaul to enter the august college (48).

His son was a senator too, and after his praetorship, he was appointed governor of Gallia Lugdunensis (Central France). Since senator's sons usually held the praetorship at the age of thirty, we may assume that Vindex was 31 years old when he arrived in his new capital Lyon (68). According to the great historian Cassius Dio, he "was powerful in body and of shrewd intelligence, was skilled in warfare and full of daring for any great enterprise; and he had a passionate love of freedom and a vast ambition" (Roman History, 63.22.1?).

He had been in Rome for several years, and had seen how the emperor Nero had indulged in his cultural passions and odd love for the Greek way of life. Like many other senators, he thought that it would be better to overthrow the ruler, and he invited representatives of the communities of Gaul to discuss the subject.

Vindex called together the Gauls, who had suffered much by the numerous forced levies of money and were still suffering at Nero's hands. And ascending a tribunal he delivered a long and detailed speech against Nero, saying that they ought to revolt from the emperor and join the speaker in an attack upon him, "because," as he said, "he has despoiled the while Roman world, because he has destroyed all the flower of the senate, because he debauched and then killed his mother, and does not preserve even the semblance of sovereignty. Many murders, robberies and outrages, it is true, have often been committed by others; but as for the other deeds committed by Nero, how could one find words fittingly to describe them? I have seen him, my friends and allies -believe me- I have seen that man [...] in the circle of the theater, that is, in the orchestra, sometimes holding the lyre and dressed in loose tunic and buskins, and again wearing in general-soled shoes and mask. I have often heard him sing, play the herald, and act in tragedies. I have seen him in chains, hustled about as a miscreant, heavy with child, aye, in the travail of childbirth - in short, imitating all the situations of mythology by what he said and what was said to him, by what he submitted to and by what he did. Will anyone, then, style such a person Caesar and emperor and Augustus? Never! Let no one abuse those sacred titles. They were held by Augustus and by Claudius, whereas this fellow might most properly be termed Thyestes, Oedipus, Alcmeon, or Orestes; for these are the characters that he represents on the stage and it is these titles that he has assumed in place of the others. Therefore rise now at length against him; succour yourselves and succour the Romans; liberate the entire world!"
[Cassius Dio, Roman history 63.22.2-6;
tr. Earnest Cary]
Vindex was a Roman senator and a nobleman, and behaved according to the principle that nobility obliges. He did not fight to get the empire for himself, but started to search for a distinguished and decent man. In April 68, he found Servius Sulpicius Galba, the governor of Hispania Tarraconensis, an honest man who was skilled in warfare, and by common consent possessed the makings of a ruler.

Galba (Musei Vaticani, Rome)
Now, Vindex revolted. He recruited soldiers and announced that he no longer obeyed the orders of Nero. We don't know what he said to inspire his people, but a late source that sometimes contains reliable information, the Life of Apollonius by Philostratus, says:
He declared in it that Nero was anything rather than a harpist, and a harpist rather than a sovereign. And he taxed him with madness and avarice and cruelty and wantonness of every kind, though he omitted to tax him with the cruelest of crimes; for he said that he had quite rightly put to death his mother, because she had borne such a monster.
[Philostratus, Life of Apollonius, 5.10;
tr. F.C. Conybeare]
The emperor responded by sending the First legion Italica, which had recently been constituted, to Lyon. When it arrived, however, the revolt had already been suppressed by another force: the legions XXI Rapax, IIII Macedonica and XXII Primigenia of the army of the Upper Rhine, commanded by Lucius Verginius Rufus.
Rufus, the governor of Germania Superior, set out to make war on Vindex; but when he reached

"PIECE FOR THE WIND" ('62) by Yoko Ono for "INSTRUCTIVE AUTO-DESTRUCTION" by Anthony Cox in "Art and Artists", August, 1966

"PIECE FOR THE WIND

Cut a painting up and let them be lost
in the wind.

1962 summer"

"Ono leads in a direction that might be called Concept-Art

INSTRUCTIVE AUTO-DESTRUCTION

THE FULL MOON hangs over the Lower East Side, its light
shines on paper-littered streets. In the daytime 2nd Avenue
is jammed with traffic and it's possible to look up through
the dust and heat at the sky and imagine what those few
seconds would be like before it came if eternity were to fit.
What an EVENT!
What is an Event and what does it have to do with Art?
Circa 1950: Yoko Ono is sitting around some-place
striking matches. She is observing the significance of a
natural act. Many matches later she finds that by lighting
a match and watching til it has gone out she is making
something that has a shorter existence than herself, and
by comparison is making her life longer.
When people are asked to observe the passage of time
they may feel ill at ease. Is this why we have a term like
auto-destruction? One of Yoko Ono's first events is
called LIGHTING PIECE: 'Light a match and watch
till it goes out.'
1961: her first one-man show in New York, in which
fifteen works were what she calls INSTRUCTUER;
'Something that emerged from instruction and yet not
quite emerged - not quite structured - never quite struc-
tured --- like an unfinished church with a sky ceiling.'
One of these works which was described by a critic as 'a
grimy unstrung canvas with a hole in it' is SMOKE
PAINTING: 'Light canvas or any finished painting with
a cigarettes at any time for any length of time. See the smoke
movement. The painting ends when the whole canvas is
gone.'* For Ono, paintings like Event do end: an ad-
ditional act in life; something to solve the temptation of
insanity.
Other works in her 1961 show were, PAINTING TO
BE STEPPED ON: 'Leave a piece of canvas or finished
painting on the floor or in the street.'* A + B PAINTING;
'Cut out a circle on canvas. A. Place a numeral figure, a
roman letter, or a katakanao on canvas B at an arbitrary
point. Place canvas A on canvas B and hang them together.
The figure on canvas B may show, may show partially, or
may not show. You may use old paintings, photographs, etc.
instead of blank canvases.'* PAINTING FOR THE
WIND: 'Make a hole. Leave it in the wind.'* PAINT-
ING TO SEE THE SKIES: 'Drill two holes into a can-
vas. Hang it where you can see the sky. (Change the place
of hanging. Try both the front and the rear windows, to
see if the skies are different.')* PAINTING TO LET
THE EVENING LIGHT GO THROUGH: 'Hang a
bottle behind a canvas. Place the canvas where the west
light comes in. The painting will exist when the bottle
creates a shadow on the canvas, or it does not have to
exist. The bottle may contain liquor, water, grasshoppers,
ants or singing insects, or it does not have to contain.'*
BLOOD PIECE: 'Use your blood to paint. Keep painting
until you faint (A). Keep painting until you die (B).'*
These and the others in the show were designed to be
done by anybody although at the time it was not apparent
to most observers and as well the works had been made by
Ono, they were regarded as going in one direction only:
purely auto-destructive. Actually all her paintings exist
in two phases. (1) The instruction phase; which may be
compared to a musical composition; written, copywritten,
distributed, and generally at large for anybody to make
(perform) and show (2) the existence of the particular
piece, which generally has some aspect which is in a state
of flux. Sometimes this may be only one-way, sometimes
it may be oscillating, or the piece may just need to be
refuelled, so to speak.
The one aspect which is considered so important in
most painting, the graphic element, or visual design, is
almost never stated except in the vaguest way as in A + B
PAINTING, and like a Swiss Patent, it is never clear
exactly how the formula goes. This is left up to the indi-
vidual who is to construct the work and how he feels about
such things. For the maker of the work and the audience
this opens up all sorts of possibilities. One is able to
observe certain relationships between art and life that are
usually overlooked in purely graphic art. Instead of saying
how the hell did he do that one might say why the hell do
I have to do that. The owner and/or maker of the painting
must continually come to grips with certain problems that
force him to consider what the concept of art is all about.

Recently, while the works of hers constructed by various
painters and sculptors were being collected in a gallery
for a show this coming fall, a piece was accidentally sold.

which produces a card with the word 'sky' on it when 25c

Impatiens

Looks gigantic here but actually a small bloom about an inch in diameter, the Impatiens is a genus of about 850 to 1000 species of flowering plants that are widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere. In the middle of the flower, as seen in this photograph, is a seed capsule. When this capsule matures it will literally explode when touched shooting the seeds inside several yards away. The bright red flowers in the background of this photograph are begonia.

Impatiens: The Vibrant World of Busy Lizzies, Balsams, and Touch-me-nots

Many gardeners know of Impatiens walleriana, the species that lies behind the myriad colorful garden varieties that brighten up containers, window boxes, and shady spots throughout the world. The genus Impatiens is enormous, comprising over a thousand species—many of which, although highly desirable, remain lilttle known to Western gardeners.
Raymond Morgan first examines Impatiens through a botanical lens, describing their physiology, morphology, and seed dispersal mechanisms. He then recounts Victorian-era plant-hunting forays into the Himalayas and notes how modern-day expeditions, with due concern to conservation, continue to bring back species that will eventually find their way into nursery catalogs and gardens.
Perhaps most excitingly, the author describes over 200 species ranging from Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and the Himalayas to New Guinea. Along the way the reader is acquainted with remarkable species, including the giant African Impatiens tinctoria, which grows to 6 feet tall, and Tibet's ultramarine I. nanchabarwensis, which grows in the deepest canyon on earth.
The genus Impatiens contains a wealth of untapped treasures for gardeners. With wonderful photographs complementing the detailed plant descriptions, this book is essential reading for curious-minded gardeners keen to unearth this fascinating and largely unexplored genus.

his unique piece of jewelry was carefully handcrafted with thin pure copper wire. I added a few vintage brass headpins which are imitating the flower stamens.
Flower pendant hangs on the vintage brass collar but you can easily attach it to any other chain or collar. The whole piece is very romantic, with gentle modern touch.

Dimensions:
Circumference: approx. 46 cm (18”)
Measures of flower pendant: approx. 3.5 x 4.5 x 4.8 cm (1 3/8” x 1 6/8" x 1 7/8")
