The Tulip nebula and Cygnus X-1 black hole

The Tulip nebula and Cygnus X-1 black hole

A tulip and a black hole?!

Found approx 6000 light years away in Cygnus (the summer swan), the Tulip is an emission nebula notable for its proximity to Cygnus X-1, a small quasar that was one the first suspected black holes. (See the note for locating Cygnus X-1.)

As someone from Toronto, there's a cool local connection for me here. Cygnus X-1 was identified in 1971 by University of Toronto astronomer Tom Bolton as a potential black hole candidate and the source of some crazy strong X-ray emissions. Bolton used the 74 inch telescope at the David Dunlap Observatory in Richmond Hill, a suburb of Toronto.

(Sadly, the dark parkland around the Dunlap observatory is soon slated to be built up with condominiums and suburban homes, rendering it much less useful for astronomy.)

Details for nerds:

TMB 130SS and QSi 583wsg
HaRGB (minutes) = 200:24:24:24
Captured in June from downtown Toronto, Canada
Stacked in Maxim DL, levels curves etc in PS CS2

The star spikes are fake! I don't normally use them, but for this image it just felt appropriate.

My love for my widefield setup (FSQ85 and STL11K) means I've been missing out on smaller targets. So I picked up a QSI 583 wsg for its smaller pixels, and mated it to my TMB 5" f7 refractor for smaller fields.

Oyster Bay - Par 3 17th Hole - My First HDR Photo

Oyster Bay - Par 3 17th Hole - My First HDR Photo

This is a picture of the 17th hole at the Oyster Bay golf course in Sunset Beach, NC. We are staying at a house on the course for our vacation. I brought along the newsest issue of Shutterbug and in there they have an article about creating HDR photos. After reading the article I got inspired and attempted to make an HDR photo. I ended up using 6 different photos to create this shot. 2 of them were the same shot but I used them both anyway.
