SHRINK stars Kevin Spacey as Henry Carter, L.A.’s top celebrity psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a famous actress (Saffron Burrows), a wildly insecure young writer (Mark Webber), and an obsessive-compulsive super-agent (Dallas Roberts). Disillusioned with both his career and personal life, Henry’s only hope of salvation could come from his first pro bono case, a beautiful but troubled teenage girl (Keke Palmer). My dye-pot is a little small. So I make the dye bath in two rounds, but its not really necessary.

The pigment dissolves readily in hot water, making a highly concentrated bath that can be diluted with water to increase the portion later. (While the water will dissolve a significant amount of pigment -- water may turn a deep deep red -- the cotton will abosrb much less.)

So: boil the onion skins in water. Some people say it needs to simmer for an hour. I usually simmer it 5-15 minutes, depending on how it looks. At high heat, some colors actually begin to dull. I'm the kind of person that enjoys tinkering, so I watch closely to see how the color is doing and try to call it off when I feel it is "just right". Again -- being that picky can be fun, but is not that necessary with onion skins 'cause they do just fine under many circumstances.

By now -- the mordanted shirts should have been rinsed a few times, but not dried. Preferably, they are already in a small amount of fresh water. (I like the shirts to be in a hot dye-bath for a little while, but I don't want them to be in a boiling-hot one and shrink excessively. )

Make sure there is enough pigment bath for the shirts to move around freely. Leave for 2-3 days, depeding on the intensity of the color you wish to achieve. Stir and move the shirt around to ensure a more-even result.
