Flight Journal to Phoenix

Flight Journal to Phoenix

Flight Journal

A journey is a turning point. We are subject to new winds. The horizon
is deep blue. I am lost in a compartment of thought, of hazardous
journeys, unbidden sorrows, of wrecked lives that I fumble and twist
with in hopes of bringing meaning.

"There is something hidden go find it !" says the voice. The window is
full of creme colored clouds. "Everytime we leave home and go to another
place, we open up the possibility of having something wonderful happen
to us," says the prophet.

I drink coke classic, eat a feast of crackers, listen to Sinatra sing
"I've got you under my skin" and read about the Laser monks at the
Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Spring Bank in rural Wisconsin. They
sell ink cartages and have an online click check for online prayers.
So why not try lasermonks.com?

More peanuts are on the way ! I take a bite of fig newton. I hate fig
newtons. A man beside us heads to Phoenix to see his daughter and seven
grandchildren and a 16 year old grandson who throws a baseball at 90
miles per hour.

The trip grows cloudy. Night falls. The flight takes 3 hours and 33
minutes. Welcome to "the valley of the sun." Next stop Surprise.
Arizona.

San Diego, CA

San Diego, CA

airport sunset - San Diego International Airport (IATA: SAN, ICAO: KSAN, FAA LID: SAN), also referred to as Lindbergh Field, is a public airport located 3 mi (4.8 km) northwest of the central business district of San Diego, California and 20 mi (32 km) from the Mexico – United States border at Tijuana, Mexico. It is operated by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

San Diego International is the busiest single-runway commercial service airport in the United States, and second in the world after London Gatwick, with approximately 600 departures and arrivals carrying 50,000 passengers each day, and a total of 18.3 million passengers in 2007. San Diego is the largest metropolitan area of the United States which does not serve as a hub nor secondary hub for any airline, however the airport is a focus city for Southwest Airlines, who is the largest operator.

The top five airlines in terms of market share for 2010 were Southwest Airlines (38.45%), United Airlines (17.05%), Delta Air Lines (10.73%), American Airlines (8.8%) and US Airways (5.94%).

The airport is located near the site of the old Ryan Airlines factory, but it is not the same as Dutch Flats, the Ryan airstrip where Charles Lindbergh flight tested the Spirit of St. Louis before his historic transatlantic flight. The site of Dutch Flats is on the other side of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, in the Midway area, near the current intersection of Midway and Barnett avenues.

Inspired by Lindbergh's historic flight and excited to have made the plane he flew, the city of San Diego passed a bond issue in 1928 for construction of a two-runway municipal airport to be operated by the city. Lindbergh himself encouraged the building of the airport and agreed to lend his name to it. The new airport, dedicated on August 16, 1928, was given the name San Diego Municipal Airport – Lindbergh Field, by which name it is still known. This naming occurred because San Diego was the city from which Lindbergh began the journey that would ultimately become the first solo transatlantic flight, in addition to being the place where his aircraft was designed, built, and tested, at Dutch Flats.

The airport was the first federally certified airfield to serve all aircraft types, including seaplanes. The original terminal was located on the northeastern side of the field, along Pacific Highway. The airport also served as a testing facility for several early U.S. sailplane designs, notably those by William Hawley Bowlus (superintendent of construction on the Spirit of St. Louis) who also operated the Bowlus Glider School at Lindbergh Field from 1929–1930. On June 1, 1930, a regular San Diego – Los Angeles airmail route was initiated. The airport gained 'international airport' status in 1934, and a United States Coast Guard Air Base located adjacent to the field was commissioned in April 1937. The Coast Guard's fixed-wing aircraft made use of the runway at Lindbergh Field until the mid-1990s when the fixed-wing aircraft were retired.

World War II brought significant change to the airfield when the Army Air Corps took it over in 1942 to support the war effort. The infrastructure of the airport was improved to handle the heavy bombers being manufactured in the region during the war. This transformation, including an 8,750 ft (2,670 m) runway, made the airport "jet-ready' long before jet passenger planes came into widespread service. After the war, commercial air service at Lindbergh Field expanded rapidly. Pacific Southwest Airlines established its headquarters in San Diego and inaugurated service at Lindbergh Field in 1949. In 1960 Lindbergh Field gained its first jet service, with American Airlines and United Airlines operating the Boeing 720 to Phoenix and San Francisco, respectively.

The original terminal was located on the north side of the airport and was used until the 1960s, by then air traffic in San Diego had increased considerably and new facilities were needed in a location on the airport where aircraft did not have to cross the runway to get to and/or from the gates. The current Terminal 1 was opened on the southern side of the airport property on March 5, 1967. It was not until July 11, 1979 that Terminal 2 was opened. A third terminal, dubbed the Commuter Terminal, opened on July 23, 1996. Terminal 2 was later expanded by 300,000 square feet (30,000 m2) in 1998, opening on January 7, 1998. In the 1990s, the official name of the airport became San Diego International Airport, but is still often referred to as Lindbergh Field by the local residents. As downtown San Diego developed, one of the airport's two runways was closed. This 3,600 foot runway was rarely used and insufficent in length for commerical aircraft.

Originally funded, built and operated by the City of San Diego, then the San Diego Unified Port District, the airport is now operated by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

Diamond DA 42 Twin Star N238US

Diamond DA 42 Twin Star N238US

S&G SKY
Serial Number 42.AC128
MFR Year 2008

Engine Model THIELERT TAE 125-02-99

The DA42 was originally powered by two Thielert Centurion 1.7 diesel engines. Based on production Daimler Mercedes TDI automotive engines, Centurion aerodiesels are modified with propeller reduction drives and redundant hardware specific to aeronautical use. These engines can operate on diesel fuel, but according to TAE Centurion, Thielert's aircraft engine subsidiary, the company has elected to license the engines for jet fuel use only. In the United States, Jet-A or Jet-A1 fuel (or mixture) is used. A significant percentage of DA42s are used in flight training, where the aircraft is about 30% to 40% more fuel efficient than its main competitor, the Piper Seminole, which uses 180 horsepower (130 kW) Lycoming engines to deliver similar cruise speeds and payloads.[citation needed]

Thielert Aircraft Engines ended its production of the 1.7 L. Centurion engines (designated as TAE 125-01 Centurion 1.7) in favour of a new 2.0 L. (TAE 125-02-99) engine.[7] Diamond began installing this new 2.0 L. engine in early 2007. Although engine displacement increased, it was de-rated to produce the same horsepower (135) and torque (302 ft·lbf.) as the 1.7 L. engine.[8]

In late 2007, Diamond aircraft announced it would begin building and installing its own aerodiesels, through a subsidiary, Austro Engine gmbH, and with other partners that included Mercedes Benz Technologies.

The future use of Thielert engines on the DA42 came into question due to Thielert filing for insolvency in April 2008.[9]

In May 2008 Diamond Aircraft indicated that they were acquiring as many engine parts as possible from Thielert to ensure serviceability of the existing DA42 fleet.[10] Negotiations between Diamond and Thielert failed to find a solution and Diamond informed its customers with Thielert engines that "Unfortunately, the insolvency administration has not accepted any part of our proposal." [11]

In May 2008 Diamond Aircraft had more than thirty DA42 Twin Stars on the production line in London, Ontario waiting for engines to be available. Diamond planned to continue DA42 production, but warned customers at the time: "given the current situation, there may be unusual delays in service and response to technical inquiries."[10]

On May 14, 2008 Thielert announced that it would no longer honour engine warranties for the engines installed in Diamond Aircraft. Owners who required warranty work were required to pay cash in advance for parts that they needed. The engine gearboxes must be inspected or replaced every 300 hours and Kuebler, the company handling Thielert's bankruptcy, offered new replacement gearboxes for US$16,000 and used, inspected ones for USD$7,800.[12] These gearboxes had to be paid for in advance and did not come with a warranty.[12] At these prices, gearbox replacement, amortized over the life of the engine, threatened to more than double the cost of engine operation to over USD$100 per hour, plus fuel.[12] Lycoming engines of similar horsepower cost less than USD$12 per hour to overhaul.[12] This announcement caused a predictably negative reaction from Diamond DA42 owners. Diamond Aircraft attempted to honour the warranties in place of the engine manufacturer and commenced negotiations for parts and maintenance certification authority.[13]

Due to the insolvency of Thielert and the decisions of the insolvency administrator, including cancelling warranty support and the prorating of time-between-overhaul for the Thielert engines that power the DA42, Diamond announced in July 2008 that production of the DA42 was suspended. At the time production was suspended the DA42 was reported to have 80 percent of the piston twin market.[1][14]

In November 2008 Diamond Aircraft CEO Peter Maurer said the insolvency commissioner responsible for Thielert's restructuring had accepted that the eventual sale of the company would depend on product support. This lead to Thielert reducing the cost of parts and actively working on extending inspection and replacement requirements for gearbox clutches as well as other parts.[15]

In November 2008 Diamond was still pursuing maintenance certification authority for the Thielert engines, developing its own line of Austro diesel engines and certification of the Lycoming O-360 powered DA42 all as possible solutions to the situation.[15]

In March 2009 Diamond achieved EASA certification for the Austro engine and returned the DA42 to production as the DA42 NG. The new engine produces 20% more power, while giving better fuel economy than the Thielert engines and results in a higher gross weight and increased performance.[1]

The first Austro-powered DA42 was delivered to a customer in Sweden in April 2009, with the first US customer aircraft expected in mid-2010.[

Interior of a DC-3. Boise, Idaho. August 1983.

Interior of a DC-3. Boise, Idaho. August 1983.

The interior of the DC-3 seen in the previous photo. This aircraft is rigged for smokejumping, thus the canvas-and-steel-tubing bench seats running along both sides of the fuselage. Not the most comfortable accommodations for a long flight. The rest room on this aircraft was a funnel, a piece of plastic tubing, and a small hole in the floor near the tail. As so many people I knew in the Forest Service were found of saying, "I shit you not." But then, not shitting is what you did on the DC-3. You pissed, and then only if you really needed to. Badly.

I enjoyed flying on the "Doug." It was a fine old aircraft, built long before anyone on the crew was born, and elegantly slow. A trip in the Doug was more like sailing on a really tall ocean liner than flying in an airplane. You could get a good look at the landscape when you poked along in a DC-3, flying low for the simple reason that the aircraft was not pressurized and carried no oxygen. While flying the Doug at night over western spaces, it comforted me to see how much empty darkness there was between the tiny points of light marking the outposts and edges of progress.

In 1979, the year before I started with the Boise I.R., a Forest Service DC-3 based at McCall, Idaho blew a jug (i.e. a cylinder) and crashed in a river canyon, killing a dozen or so seasonal workers along with the pilots. A teenage kid and his dog, Beetle, walked away unharmed. What disease of the brain causes me to remember that dog's name? I certainly don't remember the kid's name. A lot of the pogues who were still on the Boise I.R. in 1980 had gone for a ride on that very aircraft on its last flight before the crash.

In the Forest Service, the word "pogue" designates an ordinary worker, a peon, a grunt. Like a lot of Forest Service slang, this word was borrowed from another occupation. The military, logging, sports, and college fraternities were big sources of slang for fire fighters, with some of that slang coming via movies and television rather than straight from the source. The counterpart to a pogue is a "green shirt," a full-time Forest Service employee with a year-round appointment, health insurance, retirement benefits, and a future. Because the Boise Hotshots were in Forest Service Region 4 (Utah, Nevada, most of Idaho, and a little bit of Northeastern California) a high percentage of our green shirts were Mormons. In general, there is a high percentage of Mormons among the ranks of the Forest Service green shirts, and Region 4 is their Mecca.

One slang term that may be unique to the Forest Service is Ned. A Ned is a rookie; specifically, a first-year smokejumper. To be referred to as a "second-year Ned" is not a compliment.

B-52

B-52

Nine members of the United States Air Force left Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts at 12:11 p.m. on Thursday January 24, 1963. The mission of this flight was routine: practicing low level navigation to avoid the newest Soviet radar technology and return to Westover at 5:30 p.m.

heir B-52 Stratofortress-C, an $8 million aircraft, was unarmed for this training run, but was capable of carrying 2 nuclear weapons and 12 short range attack missiles. The wingspan of these planes is 185 feet and measures 160 from nose to tail. The 8 jet engines can propel this aircraft at speeds of up to 650 mph at altitudes above 50,000 feet.

The crewmen were flying at an airspeed of only 280 knots at an altitude only 500 feet above the terrain. Outside it was 14 degrees below zero with winds gusting to 40 knots. About 5 feet of snow lay on the ground. When the plane began to encounter turbulence the crew commander, Westover's Most Senior Standardization Instructor Pilot, attempted to fly above it, Just after it started to climb, a loud noise was heard, sounding like an explosion. The plane went into a 40 degree right turn and was pointing nose down. The pilot, Lt. Col. Dante E. Bulli, attempted to level the plane, but when he could not, he ordered ejection. The navigator, Capt. Gerald J. Adler, ejected first, followed by Bulli and the copilot, Maj. Robert J. Morrison. Time did not allow the others to escape before crashing into the side of Elephant Mountain at 2:52 p.m, They were: Lt. Col. Joe R. Simpson, Jr, Maj. William W. Gabriel, Maj. Robert J, Hill, Capt. Herbert L. Hansen, Capt, Charles G. Leuchter, and T-Sgt. Michael F. O'Keffe. Morrison was killed when he hit a tree while parachuting to the ground a mile away.

Bulli broke his ankle when he landed in a tree 30 feet above the ground. He survived the night, with temperatures reaching 28 degrees below zero, by tucking the sleeping bag from his survival kit into the snow. Adler struck the snow covered ground about 2,000 feet from the wreckage at a force estimated at 16 times the force of gravity. His skull was fractured and three ribs were broken. The impact bent his ejection seat enough that he could not get his survival kit out. He survived the night by wrapping himself up in his parachute, which did not deploy upon ejection, but both feet were frost bit.

Scott Paper Company dispatched plows from Greenville to clear the road near the crash. They plowed snow drifts of up to 15 feet out of the 10 mile road getting the rescuers within l.S miles of the site. They had to snowshoe or snowmobile the rest of the way. Eighty rescuers from the Maine Inland Fish and Game Department, the Maine State Police, the Civil Air Patrol, Air Force Units from Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine, along with others from New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and other volunteers quickly went to work. Bulli and Adler were rescued the next day. Bulli spent three months in the hospital then returned to active duty. Adler later became unconscious for five days with double pneumonia was hospitalized for most of the next year. His leg had to be amputated during this time from the frostbite and gangrene that had set in.

The crash was caused by a structural problem. The vertical stabilizer came off the plane, falling to the ground 1.5 miles from where the plane impacted the mountain side.

On the 30th Anniversary of the crash, a special commemorative service was sponsored by the Moosehead Riders Snowmobile Club. Adler returned to Greenville for the event and went to the crash site for the first time since being evacuated out by a helicopter thirty years earlier. He was honored at several ceremonies. Bulli was unable to attend the event.

A salvaged engine and Adler's ejection seat can be viewed at the Moosehead Rider's Clubhouse. Gravel roads now pass by the crash site, making it a short 400 yard hike to view the wreckage. The remains of this B-52 still are still on the side of Elephant Mountain just outside of Greenville.

MJ627

MJ627

MJ627 (G-ASOZ) (G-BMSB)
Sqdn - code: 441-9G-P, IAC-158
Yet another of the Spitfires built at Castle Bromwich against Contract No. B981687/39, MJ627 was an LFIX manufactured at the end of 1943 and delivered to No.9 MU at Cosford on 4th December. It seems to have been stored until August 1944 and on the 18th of that month appears to have been allocated to General Aircraft Ltd, a civilian servicing unit, followed by No.83 Group Support Unit the next day. It was awaiting collection on 1st September and five days later was again to be found with No.83 GSU. All of this was probably associated with preparation work required to get the aircraft up to operational condition, this being achieved on 28th September 1944, when it joined No.441 squadron. On 9th March 1945 it suffered a Cat.E (write-off) flying accident, but the damage was not that serious as it was reclassified as Cat.B on 11th September on allocation to Air Service Training Ltd. It was repaired and awaiting collection by 21st February 1946 and dispatched to the storage depot at No.29 MU High Ercall one week later, remaining there until July 1950, when it was declared non-effective stock and sold to Vickers Ltd.

Vickers converted the aircraft into a Tr.9 trainer and test flew it as G-15-171 prior to sale to the Irish Air Corps as IAC158, to which it was delivered in June 1951. Following retirement in 1960 it was used as an instructional airframe at Baldonnel until acquired by Film Aviation Services Ltd and shipped to Biggin Hill, where it arrived by road on 13th November 1963. It was offered for sale at ?1500 in Flight International, but remained unsold and dismantled, being placed on the civil register the following February as G-ASOZ. It remained uncertificated and in September 1964 it was bought by Tim Davies, removed from the register and taken to Elstree, where it was placed in store as spares for G-ASJV (MH434). It was at the time of its collection from Biggin Hill that its wings were mistakenly exchanged with those from MJ772/IAC159.

The composite airframe remained at Elstree until 11th December 1967, when it was taken to Bossington House airstrip, Stockbridge, Hants. – the home of John Fairey – and placed in store once again, remaining there until sold to M S & P K Bayliss, who registered it as G-BMSB on 3rd May 1978 and restoration began to a flying condition at Kenilworth, Warwickshire. A Mosquito Merlin 76, No. 183741 is installed in the airframe.

It made its first post-restoration flight on November 8th 1993. Damaged in a wheels-up landing at Coventry Airport on 25.4.98 and being restored by a team of volunteers from BBMF. Repaired and test flown on 14th February 2002 - now based at East Kirby.

    flight times
  • (Flight Time) Herbert "Flight Time" Lang (born 1977) is a basketball player for the Harlem Globetrotters.

  • (Flight Time) That portion of the trip actually spent in the air.  For billing purposes this definition is generally strict and only applies from moment of liftoff to moment of touchdown.

  • (Flight-Time) The time you have spent, in an hour-to-hour ratio, hooping in your life. You may or may not have been practicing tricks. Any time you spend interacting with your hoop counts, even if the hoop is not spinning.

New York City Hall

New York City Hall

Financial District, Lower Manhattan

The New York City Hall is the most beautiful city hall in the United states.

It was designed in competition in the Federal Style of architecture with considerable French influence. It is basically C-shaped in plan with two end wings projected forward at the front. This fine marble building consists of two stories above a high basement. At the center an attic story rises above the main roof level and is surmounted by a handsome domed cupola.

In front of the central section, of the building, an imposing porch with columns rises above a sweuping flight of stairs which approach it from three sides. The roof of the porch, with a railing (balustrade), forms an open deck in front of five large arched windows set between columns. The great size of these second floor windows relative to the masonry surraunding them is reminiscent of the famous French palace greenhouses (orangeries) and represents a radical piece of design for this country in Federal times.

Historically, City Hall is important as the building which, for over one hundred and fifty years, has been the seat of City government. Through its doors have passed all the great personages most intimately connected with the development of this City. Many portraits of these notables adorn its walls today. In addition it has done honor to the dead. The bodies of Lincoln and Grant have lain in state within its walls.

The architectural importance of this building is to be found in its superb proportions and in the beautiful French detail of its exterior and central rotunda. This part of the design may be attributed to the French architect in producing this masterpiece.

The more strictly Federal detail of the handsome interior rooms has been attributed to McComb and is typical of the Federal work being designed in this country at that time.

LUTECE, New York City, New York

LUTECE, New York City, New York

Lutece, the world-renowned Manhattan restaurant that has epitomized classic French cuisine for more than 30 years, was sold yesterday by its chef and owner, Andre Soltner, to a company that primarily owns theme restaurants.

To generations of sophisticated New Yorkers, Lutece has represented a gastronomic lighthouse in an ever-changing sea. Mr. Soltner's soulful Alsace-style cooking has evolved over the years, but never lurched to the left or right with the latest dining fad. Regulars knew they could always get the golden onion tart, the blood-warming Alsatian tart of eggs, bacon, parsley and potatoes, or maybe foie gras with caramelized onions. Among the most coveted main courses were roasted duck with caramelized pears, braised baby lamb, and saddle of venison with chestnuts, red cabbage and vinegar. Dinner runs upward from $70, depending on one's taste in wine.

Lutece has a written menu, but hardly anyone except first-time diners uses it. Mr. Soltner likes to visit most tables, his towering toque tilted to one side, and say to patrons, "What can I cook for you?"

Mr. Soltner has always been guarded about his restaurant's finances. Even his closest colleagues can only guess what 75-seat Lutece grosses annually -- more than $5 million is a rough consensus.

Mr. Soltner opened Lutece in February 1961 with a partner, Andre Surmain. Lunch cost $8, dinner about $12. Mr. Surmain discovered the young chef Soltner working in an Alsace restaurant, Chez Hansi.

After a rocky start, the fledgling Lutece took flight. In 1973, Mr. Surmain decided to return to France, and Mr. Soltner bought his shares of Lutece. He has been running it with his wife, Simone, since. Lutece, named for the Celt term for ancient Paris, has received four-star ratings from restaurant critics of The New York Times continually since 1980.

One Way 301/ 365

It's not that I'm always look to go against the grain, it's just that I really think there is more than one right way to get things done. And maybe, just maybe, the expected way isn't the best way :)

On my way to take the girls to school today, i passed this little river that goes past the old Visteon plant. it has the most amazing mist coming off it.... and not just that light mist... it was so thick it was like a standing fog. As soon as I got the older one off to school, I raced back with my camera for a selfie. But in the short half hour it took me to drop off two kids, the thick mist was gone. It looked like maybe it was better a bit further down the river, so i jumped back in the van and went cruising through Ypsi to see if I could find a patch. No luck. *However*, i did spy a couple spots in downtown Ypsi that caught my eye. And let me just say... the downtown bus depot in Ypsi at 9am...wow. pretty special.

Im wondering how many people in NYC have shot this same shot (not wedding persay, but with this stencil and wall). When we walked by this little grungy spot on the way to the peer for some shots i got all excited and proclaimed to them "THIS IS THE MONEY SHOT".

I'm also really pleased that i got a laughing couple in, I'm really not super confident taking candid shots so this was pretty exciting!

Tamanawas Falls (N.W.Oregon)

Tamanawas Falls (N.W.Oregon)

My friend Bob and I went hiking yesterday and this is where we ended up. I do believe you could explore the northwest everyday for the rest of your life and never hit the same place twice Oregon and Washington is filled with more beauty than one can ever imagine.

Info from Oregonwild.org
Oregon Wild Hikes: Tamanawas Falls

Tamanawas Fall is located on the east side of Mount Hood and is part of the Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Proposal

Part of the Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Proposal

Difficulty: easy
Distance: four miles
Elevation Gain: 300 feet
Season: spring, summer, fall*
Maps: see below

About the Hike

To take a trip into the wilds of the east side of Mount Hood that is truly a highlight of the Mount Hood Loop, scoot off HWY 35 to visit Tamanawas Falls. This 100 ft waterfall is less known than its rivals in the Gorge, but is equally as breathtaking. Besides delighting in this beautiful waterfall, hikes in this area take you through lush vegetation and critical wildlife habitat.

The water that spills over Tamanawas Falls is from Cold Spring Creek; a clear, cold creek that is a tributary to the proposed Wild and Scenic East Fork Hood River. This area, which includes nearby scenic Polallie Creek, hosts winter and summer steelhead runs. In addition, these cold waters help keep the East Fork of the Hood River cool for the river's threatened Coho salmon.

While you're noticing the creek's ideal steelhead habitat, be sure to look up and notice the area's diverse vegetation. The Tamanawas Falls area has remnant old-growth Pondersa Pines along with a mix of Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir trees. Don't miss Tamanawas Falls in the fall, as the area's Western Larch and Cottonwood trees turn brilliant shades of yellow that contrast nicely with the area's abundant evergreen trees. Elk enjoy the vegetation of this area, as they benefit from the old-growth forests that provide protection and a corridor to other wild areas of the forest.

The Dirt

Oregon Wild and other conservation groups are currently working to gain Wilderness protection for the Tamanawas Falls area as part of the Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness proposal. Wilderness protection would forever safeguard the land from logging, mining, and other development while preserving the public’s right to enjoy back country recreation.

How to Get There

From Hood River

From HWY 84 take exit 64 to the junction of HWYs 30 and 35 (the China Gorge restaurant is a great landmark at this intersection). Take HWY 35 south. The turn off for Tamanawas Falls is on your right, about 1.5 miles south of Polallie Creek campground. If you reach the Sherwood campground you have gone too far.

From Portland via Government Camp

From HWY 26 go past Government Camp and take HWY 35 (towards Hood River). The turn off to Tamanawas Fall is on your left about a 1/4 mile past (north) of the Sherwood Campground. If you reach Polallie Creek campground you have gone about 1.5 miles too far.
Recommended

For the easiest route to Tamanawas Falls, head north from the parking area on the East Fork Trail #650 for a 1/2 mile. Turn left (west) on Tamanawas Falls Trail #650A. This hike will take you to the base of Tamanawas Falls. (easy, four miles round trip)

If you're interested in a ridge top view of Tamanawas Falls, follow the trail uphill away from the creek and Trail #650A. When this trail meets Trail #645 at the top of the ridge, turn left (south) and follow #645 until you see Tamanawas Falls. (moderate, five miles round trip)

Another possibility is to take a longer loop back to the parking area. If you visited Tamanawas Falls from the creek side trail, take the trail that heads up away from the creek and turn right on Trail #645 at the top of the ridge. This trail will take you back down to the East Fork Hood River. At the East Fork Trail #650, turn right (south). Continue on this trail past the turn off to Tamanawas Falls trail and a 1/2 mile later you will arrive at the parking area. (moderate, five miles round trip)

* The creek side trail is accessible in the winter by snowshoe if there is snow (this area is in the rain-shadow of Mount Hood and therefore gets less snow that many locations on the Forest).
For More Information

Contact Oregon Wild’s Portland office at (503) 283-6343 or visit our Wilderness pages here. The Forest Services' Mount Hood website also contains useful info.

Maps can be found at Mount Hood District Ranger Stations and Nature of the Northwest in Portland.
