    bicycle trainer
  • A trainer is a piece of equipment that makes it possible to ride a bicycle without moving forward. They are commonly used to train for races, or when riding conditions outside are not favourable.

  • The programs and other operating information used by a computer

  • Computer software, or just software, is the collection of computer programs and related data that provide the instructions telling a computer what to do. The term was coined to contrast to the old term hardware (meaning physical devices).

  • (computer science) written programs or procedures or rules and associated documentation pertaining to the operation of a computer system and that are stored in read/write memory; "the market for software is expected to expand"

  • Software is Grace Slick's 1984 album. This album was recorded after she had re-joined Jefferson Starship. After working on this album, Peter Wolf would go on to contribute to Jefferson Starship's 1984 album, Nuclear Furniture. A music video was made for the single "All the Machines".

Raleigh 'Police' Bicycle 1960 (UK) With Double Crossbars

Raleigh 'Police' Bicycle 1960 (UK) With Double Crossbars

More detailed view in 'All Sizes' mode.

Bicycle built by Raleigh in Nottingham (UK) in 1960 for export to Nigeria where it was considered a status symbol due to having the unusual feature of two crossbars providing extra strength.

The bicycle has a 26" frame with 28" wheels,(rider, when aboard, can easily get a nose bleed due to being so high up!) 3 speed Sturmey Archer gear and rod brakes. Still has original stainless steel wheels, mudguards, chain, chain guard, bell, rear light, pump and reflector etc.

Cycle was used for general police patrols and home beat duties by officers of the Metropolitan Police (London UK) at Chelsea Police Station, Sutton Police Station (Cheam Village home beat patrols), Banstead Police Station and for 2 months each summer by officers attached to Scotland Yard's Royalty Protection Department (SO14) for security patrols at Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the British Royal Family were in residence.

During the early 1980's the London Metropolitan Police actively encouraged the stamping of a post code (zip code) on bicycles and this particular bicycle was used heavily in the promotion of this crime prevention initiative by the force.

Contrary to general perception the Metropolitan Police did not own the bikes, they were in fact owned by the individual officer who received a cycle allowance when used for official police duties (miniscule amount).

Before receiving the cycle allowance the bicycle had to be inspected and tested by a senior officer as to its road worthiness and general condition. However, some UK forces did supply their officers with an 'official' bicycle.

Originally the official police description of this type of bicycle for reporting purposes, would be, a 'black gents ped', but as political correctness descended upon us the description was changed to 'gents black ped'.

A very heavy, solidly built bicycle to say the least! Is now used on a very regular basis and housed permanently in the Highland village of Ballater, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK, although not as a method of police transport, now used for simply collecting the daily newspaper from Yules the local Ballater newsagents.

The bicycle now receives many admiring glances and interested enquiries from locals and tourists alike when 'parked' in the village of Ballater. The main comments are "We haven't seen a bike like that for many a year" or " They don't make 'em like that anymore " or " I bet that's an old police bike" or "That's a proper bicycle that is!" or "Look it's got two crossbars".

The rider does not look forward to fairly steep hills on their proposed route.....hard work! Always looking and hoping for a flat route.

Also, thanks to 3-In-One oil and WD40 for keeping things running smoothly and shining bright. Can't believe the bike is now 50 years old! Probably will go on for another 50 years or more!

The owner is showing signs of age quicker than the bicycle itself!

I have my doubts that it began life as a motorhome..
Originally a diesel but now a 2.0L petrol, I imagine the box on the back is for gas bottles and the scaffolding is for cayying bikes and supporting the roofrack. On the back appears to be a motorcycle carrier..
No idea what the pipes on the roof are about though..
The front wheels are the later type from the single wheel 190, presumably this means he has two spare wheels !

280/365 07/10/2011

280/365 07/10/2011

I left early this morning and drove all the way through Italy to Frejus, not very far from Nice. A big mountain biking festival is happening from Wednesday to Sunday, with a bunch of races and events. This evening, Sebastien and I participated in a special race called "Roc Ruelles". It is a relay where you have to do as many laps as possible on a 1 km loop. The "track" is in the tiny streets of Frejus, going through sharp turns and up and down stairs. The place is full of spectators and the atmosphere incredible.

So we arrived there and decided to take a look at this loop. After a few trials, I realized that my back tire was losing pressure... and managed to found a hole in it. As I have tubeless tires and didn't have spare tubes, I couldn't use my bike for the race. Too bad. So we decided to use Seb's bike only. The race was in 3 parts: qualifications for bib numbers from 1-35 at 19h00, then at 19h30 for 36-70, and the 15 first teams of each group would compete in the final at 20h15. At the start of the first race, we realized that Seb also had a flat tire. Fortunately, we were number 68, so in the second group. We quickly took the tube out and fixed it, put it back... but the tire was still losing pressure. We put it out again, and found another hole, fixed it and put the tire back again. At this point it was time to go, but the tire was still losing a little bit of air. So we started like this, and at each relay, we would pump a bit! It was super intense! 2-3 laps before the end, the valve got bent, so it became impossible to pump, and I noticed that we were 14th in spite of all those problems. We finished with the air we had left and managed to secure this position! So we were qualified! w00t!

We weren't sure if we could do the final though. During the 10min break, we actually managed to find someone who gave us a new tube, and we changed it in no time. And there we left for the real race, with almost no rest! The race went much better, and we finished 12th! We were extremely happy and proud of our fight against bad luck :-)

Banshee Wildcard

Banshee Wildcard

I have almost finished the updates to my bike since buying it in November. I find bike modification to work in surges, where parts are changed until a plateau of completion is achieved. The single biggest change to the Wildcard is in tires and tubes, with an estimated 4 pounds lost in replacing the 2-ply tires and downhill tubes with Maxxis Minion EXOs and standard tubes. The bike now weighs close to 35 pounds, quite respectable for what is still a relatively burly build.

Beyond that, I bought a pair of Wellgo B065 pedals in red, and came across a WTB Devo saddle on the cheap to top my 400mm RaceFace Deus post. In this photo I also have Andrew's RaceFace Atlas FR bar, which is pretty much a perfect match for the pedals and red rebound knob on the fork. The evolution of my bikes is inevitable, but for now, the Wildcard seems to have achieved stasis.

My co-worker Delia rides this EG electric bicycle from the office. The 200 Watt hub motor provides electric assist and is controlled from a handlebar mounted switch similar to what I've seen on BionX equipped eBikes. The motor is speed governed to 18 mph and the 24V Lithium Ion battery has a claimed range of 35 miles, which isn't too bad.

As near as I can tell, these are imported from Indonesia, retail for about $1000 and are sold mostly online and from scooter stores.

High Sierra Fall Century 2009 Finish

High Sierra Fall Century 2009 Finish

I'm finishing the half century portion of the annual High Sierra Fall Century ride near Mammoth Lakes, California in September, 2009. This is my first serious season of road bicycling since high school and on a new carbon fiber bicycle. The half century starts at 7,040 feet, climbs two divides or summits of 7,500 + feet, with one of those having about 0.3 miles of a grade of 8% plus, with 0.1 mile at 13%. Tough when you are beginning the training for long distances. Some locals climb it using their big crank! This is the largest gear on the front for those of you not familiar with cycling lingo.

I'm both addicted and passionate about riding. Too bad the cycling season here is only 5 months in a good year. This year (2009) we had almost 4 months and had intermittent snow for about 2 weeks near the end. The rest is winter with ice and/or cinders (used for traction) along the sides of the roads, and is hazardous for riding, not to mention cold temperatures. The lowest temperature I will ride at is about 38 degrees F/3.5 C. The temperature needs to be rising or I call it a day.

My ham handi-talkie mike is clipped to my sternum strap, but can't really be seen in the picture well. When I ride the Fall Century route I can listen to the Inyo National Forest radio system, the Forest I retired from, all the local agencies I used to work with (fire, police and EMS) and can talk on 10 ham (amateur radio) mountain top repeaters. Two of these repeaters provide access to wide area linked repeater systems where you talk through a nearby repeater and simultaneously are talking on several dozen repeaters all over California, southern Nevada, and western Arizona. I can be on my bike and talk to someone on a bike in Phoenix, Arizona. On one of these systems an interface to the Internet is provided allowing me to talk with people all over the world. Repeaters in foreign countries are linked via the Internet. Big deal you say, I can do more with a cell phone. But I can talk for free using a system designed, built, maintained and owned by volunteer ham radio operators that will hold up better in a disaster than the cell phone system. I can talk on three different ham radio bands and listen to everything from AM radio to microwave. All of this on a radio 2.5" wide, 3.5" high, and 1.5" thick with most of the bulk being the battery. For those of you using the better system (metric) that would be 6.4 cm wide, 8.9 cm high, and 3.8 cm thick. I"ve found that combining my ham radio hobby with hiking, peak bagging, backpacking, cross country skiing, overnight cross country ski trips, and bicycling is a lot of fun. Some folks read peak registers after reaching summits while I spend my time seeing how far away I can make a contact.

At the time this picture I had lost 20 lbs (yes I know, I was really heavy when I started) and have 40 lbs to go. Next year I will be in the full century!

A Road in Wakayama City - Film

A Road in Wakayama City - Film

Film from my Canon EOS 1

This was the road that my host family lived on during my stay in Japan. Where do you think they stayed? Add a note and guess! :)

I loved this road. It was so nice to listen to whilst falling asleep: the sounds of motorbikes was weirdly soothing and put me to sleep. I loved Japanese roads in general, they were so cool for two reasons!

1) They had vending machines at ALL roads, even small ones. C.C Lemon is the BEST. If you ever go to Japan try it!
2) They're so clean haha.

Another thing I noticed whilst I was in Japan was the amount of people who cycle. People cycle everywhere! Pretty much 90% of school students cycle to school, including my host brother! I saw some unusual things while I was there, such as people revising for tests whilst riding next to me.

I wish I could go back here again.

Finally got a hold of a coveted GT GTB frame! It is even a dreamy fit for size.
This frame is super stiff in sprints, its light, and the geometry is amazing (proper track). It really makes for a totally different feel than a road bicycle.

I love it!

Smp Bicycle Saddles : 2011 Road Bike Reviews.

Smp Bicycle Saddles

smp bicycle saddles

    bicycle saddles
  • (Bicycle saddle) A bicycle saddle, often called a seat, is one of three contact points on an upright bicycle, the others being the pedals and the handlebars. The bicycle saddle has been known as such since the bicycle evolved from the draisine, a forerunner of the bicycle.

  • (Smps) A switched-mode power supply (switching-mode power supply, SMPS, or simply switcher) is an electronic power supply that incorporates a switching regulator in order to be highly efficient in the conversion of electrical power.

  • (SMPS) Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer

  • (SMPs) Small- and Medium-sized Ports

You Better be Good

You Better be Good

SELLE SMP is the only producer in the world that can boast being certified for the design and production of seats for bicycles entirely made in Italy.

The latest goal was reached in July 2009: Selle SMP is the first seat producer in Italy to receive ISO 9001 certification for the “Design and production of seats for bicycles entirely made in Italy”.

SMP seats can be recognized by the Italian flag on the back, they stand out for their tapered shape designed to improve performance by increasing blood circulation in the legs.

The central channel of the seat is an unusual feature due to its dimensions: almost a hand can pass and it assures not compressing the rectum, prostrate, pudendal vein, the dorsal vein and artery of the penis, scrotum and testicles, as well as the labia minora and majora and clitoris for women.

The central channel also permits natural aeration.

Air can also freely circulate around the genital area and this prevents the unpleasant sensation of heat or the typical irritation and chafing from friction with the seat.

A cyclist’s backside and the lower part of the pelvic bone (ischial tuberosities) rest on a SMP4BIKE seat and this position is favored by the shape of its rear, which, apart from avoiding compressing the coccyx on rough terrain, it also permits cushioned forward and backward movements of the rear when required by the terrain, also for those who take part in extreme cycling competitions with long pants.

Users were the ones who pointed out how the patented features of Selle SMP, such as the original beak nose on the saddle, designed to not compress genitalia and to provide a flat base, are particularly valid, above all when facing long uphill climbs and they also help during descents. They enable greater control through the thighs, also when moving on the front part, and are easy to ride even in tough conditions.

The length of the frame permits the broadest regulation currently on the market for moving the seat forward and backward with regard to the handlebars, making it particularly easy to fit on any frame/rod combination of the seat.

SMP4BIKE seats are the pioneers of a new way of conceiving bicycle seats.

X19 S2 Super Bike

The X19 S2 is our latest addition to the super pocket bike family. We took a great bike, the R32 Interceptor, and added the most requested features. Like its cousin, the X19 Super Bike is a powerful machine. Not quite the size of a full motorcycle, yet a lot larger than our mini pocket rockets, the X19 handles superbly at high speeds and maneuvers with ease.

X22 Fighter Super Bike

X22 Fighter Super Bike

As with our X18 and X19 series super bikes, the X22 has a complete safety package, including oversized front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, extra-bright rear tail light, front and rear turn signals, extra-loud horn, and keyed ignition. The X22 is the only super bike to also come with a tachometer for a true racing look.

My resting place

My resting place

Back on the first warm and sunny day back of April, I decided to pack about 30lbs of photography equipment in a backpack, take my bike and tour some of the weird or abandoned places I knew – during the day, for once (nighttime is usually more my thing). I left my house and headed towards the usual starting point for our adventures, the Canal and the Old Port. Passing cars at a more cautious version of my usual high speed, due to the sobering effects of an accident this past September, I cycled my way through the streets on a lovely and promising day.

With about a fifth of the way left to go and in heavy traffic, a traffic light located half way down a sloping hill decided to stop me. I did as it commanded and when it turned green once more I started pedaling as hard as I could to match the speed of the heavy traffic. I got three stokes in when the tension in my pedals gave way to absolute freedom of movement, both my feet left the spinning pedals and landed flat on the moving ground with my knees in a straight, locked position. I still had the heavy backpack on. I was able to use my grip on the handle bars to bounce back on to the seat and swerve away from the cars towards the sidewalk. I got off my bicycle and noticed that the chain had left the front sprocket* and noticed a sharp pain in my left knee. I put the chain back on and decided to get back on the bike since walking back home would be too painful. Being the stubborn person that I am, and given that my knee didn’t really hurt (that much) when pedaling normally, I decided taking a break to assess the damage could be postponed until I reached a better vantage point than the sidewalk. I elected to rest my knee at the very top of the Redpath silos located nearby. I got to the Redpath, used the stairs leading up 100+ feet, noticed that unbending my knee was NOT a good idea and stayed there with a bottle of wine for 6 hours, waiting for my knee to feel better. It did not. I left at sunset and carefully made my way back home.

My knee didn’t feel any better the next day.

I called a cab, went to the emergency department at the Jewish General Hospital, a nurse got a wheelchair for me when she saw me limping heavily, met the doctor, was told that my meniscus was most likely torn, was put in a splint, and given a referral to see one of the resident orthopedists as soon as possible. Two weeks later an impatient looking orthopedist examined an X-Ray of the injury, pushed, pulled and twisted my knee briefly and told me that I had a bruised meniscus. She was on her way out of the room when she stopped and asked me to walk for her. I did, and as I had explained to her earlier, couldn’t unbend my knee while putting weight so I limped.
– Why aren’t you walking straight Mr. Harrison?!
-Uhhh, I told you, if I do I will fall down because I will have a stabbing pain in my knee.
-Oh. Ok, that’ll go away in a week or two. Here’s a referral to see the Physiotherapist.
I had to stop her two times from rushing out of the room to get a referral to go see another Orthopedist and to get a medical note covering the days I had missed work.

What followed was three weeks of private Physiotherapy, thank god for insurance, and worsening pain leading to the therapist telling me that something was definitely not OK with my knee. She insisted that I get an MRI and stop all exercises until I see another orthopedist. I was able to get a rush MRI thanks to my mother who works with an MRI machine in Ottawa and got an appointment promptly with one of the physiotherapy clinic’s semi-private orthopedists.

I met with him on Monday. It turns out that a piece of bone measuring 2cm, by 1.8cm, by 7mm thick broke off inside my joint and was being loosely held in place by a ligament. An operation will be needed.

The operation will consist of the following:
The large piece of bone will have to be removed but will have to be replaced since it is load-bearing.
“Bone plugs, which look a lot like Popeye’s cigarettes”, will be fractured off the left and right sides of my knee and grafted on to the load-bearing portion of my joint in order to replace the bone that was removed.
The cartilage will be sown back and attached to the grafted bone.
The success rate is 80% for a person my age.

My leg will be completely immobilized for 3 weeks. I will be off my leg for 6 weeks and will only be allowed to put my full weight on it 12 weeks after the operation.

Unfortunately, I cannot use crutches to get around due to the injury related to the previous briefly mentioned accident - a torn the TFC in my right wrist. I‘m still awaiting final treatment. I’ve been pretty much house-bound since April and I am slowly going crazy.
I will hopefully be posting more photos of stuff I did before April and a new version of my personal website will be up in a week or two. I might also be able to push my photography more, do more freelance stuff for magazines, most likely Business Week again but probably others also and cont

The perfect society?

The perfect society?

A year ago, I was sitting in another Hyatt hotel bar at the top of a skyscraper in Shanghai, China. There are many similarities between these two Asian capitals of commerce, surprisingly many considering the fact that Japan is an established industrial nation - one of the richest in the world - and the fact that China is still considered a developing country.

I like Tokyo, I like the order, I like the politeness and I like the peace and quiet. Yes, really. People reserve seats in cafeterias by putting their bags on the chair and then walking to the counter. When people park their bikes they don't lock them because they don't need to. And when people enter shops there are special "umbrella wrappers" that wraps wet umbrellas in plastic to prevent you from accidentally rubbing your wet umbrella against someone.

This is one of the biggest cities in the world with all the services you would expect in such a city, but there are almost non of the problems usually associated with large cities. This is what a society with a virtually 100% employment rate looks like.

The view is from the Peak Lounge & Bar at the top of the Park Hyatt Tokyo in the Shinjuku Park Tower skyscraper - as central as it gets in Tokyo.

  • (Bicycle Rim) A metal or composite ring that is part of the bike wheel and on which the hub with the spokes are attached.

  • Made from a tube or tubes

  • (of a wave) Hollow and well curved

  • constituting a tube; having hollow tubes (as for the passage of fluids)

  • (Tubulars (people)) The Tubulars were one of the northern Altay peoples in Russia. They lived along the tributaries of the Katun River and the Biya River. They are closely related to the Tofalars.

  • Long, round, and hollow like a tube

  • Superleggera is an automobile construction technology used in Italy from the middle of the 20th century. The name means "super light" in Italian, and was coined in 1937 by the Italian coachbuilder, Carrozzeria Touring.

Super Champion Arc en Ciel bicycle rim

Super Champion Arc en Ciel bicycle rim

This rim for tubular tires probably dates from the early 1970s. This was a solitary rim which I had found in a local bike shop. Although the rainbow decal looks a bit rough, this rim was unused and any scrapes are just from many years of shop wear during storage. A nice quality polished aluminum rim with a narrow width (20.5 mm.) and a shallow profile height (11.75 mm.). Metal ferrules fully enclose the spoke hole openings at the rear and I believe those are stainless steel grommets finishing the holes. Smooth braking track (no dimples on this model) and 36 spoke holes. 350 grams. This was a premium road racing rim but not the lightest Super Champion model. It might compare to a Mavic "Montlhery" (a bit lighter than the Standard model and heavier than the Pro or Extra Legere versions of that model).

Fiammi Red label tubular rims

Fiammi Red label tubular rims

Because of my local reputation as a sucker for odd old bike bits, I was tipped off that a local shop owner would just love to unload these old rims on me - Cheaply! How could I resist such an invitation?

These still have some spoke nipples stuck inside the deep eyelet sockets, embedded in ancient dried on tire cement. They should clean up nicely.
