HOW TO BALANCE A BIKE. BALANCE A BIKE
HOW TO BALANCE A BIKE. CALOI MOUNTAIN BIKES. How To Balance A Bike
Day 202: A life skill Today after the whole church-day, I got forced to learn how to ride a bike, [in a good way] by Mel and Shau(!) I was full of excuses [genuine excuses may I add, like I didn't have my trainers with me, wasn't in the right clothes, I'm too heavy and might break Mel's new bike etc etc etc. Even made up the excuse of not learning with Mel's 9 year old cousin Rebecca was mocking me and scaring me that if I fall off the bike it'd really hurt, only to have Rachel the 13 year old cousin tell off her sister for discouraging me, a 22 year old who can't ride a bike(!)] But despite all these valid reasons as to why I shouldn't learn, Mel was still determined to teach me how to ride. Shau helped later on too when she realised I really was helpless. And we found flatter ground further on down the cul-de-sac area. Let's just say I'm all achey all over, and tomorrow I'll start bruising. I never fell off, but was so close to doing so. And can I ride a bike now? No, I can't [but Mel and Shau swear I started to peddle on my own when they secretly let go of me!] It's so incredibly hard for me to find my balance on a bike. I have no such thing as balance! Oh my days. I regret telling them about the challenge someone had set for me recently, to learn a bike before September!!!! Mel and Shau are sooo determined that I'll learn how. Sigh. ps, I used my strobes today! But sadly the lil dude on the bike was added in on photoshop.... way after the actual main picture was taken... solly. learning how to balance - explored :) seems that i am not balanced when i took this shot. haha! the sides are not equal here. haha, Life is about balance and I need to learn it. Today, I'll try. I had my first 12-hour sleep since November! it was awesome. i have a max of 6 hours of sleep everyday. that is awful. its a good start, i think, to live in balance. Rest. play. work. work and God. Work x2 for school papers and internship responsibilities. haha! Good day every one, HAPPY WEEKEND! Honda Brake Pads $33 Full Set at Saber Cycle Saber Cycle has sold many different brands of brake pads over the years but now we offer pads made according to our specifications under our house brand, Barracuda Bike Parts. You won't find many vendors who provide the material and performance specs of their brake pads like we have. SPECS: Friction Rating FF (.40 average), "Little Metallic" Type (15% copper, 3% ferric oxide, graphite, friction particle and powder), colophony bonding resin (organic), organic and mineral fibers, high friction coefficient with minimal wear, laboratory tested friction, coefficient .41 @ 150C ranging to .35 @ 300C. Magna V65 Oil Filter Comparison The one on the left is a Genuine Honda oil filter, 12 bucks at the dealer in Davenport, IA. The one on the right is a Fram which is 7 bucks at Wal-Mart. I'm not sure if fewer, larger ports is better than many, smaller ports, or vice versa. I prefer to use Geniune Honda parts since they made the bike in the first place and I figure they know whats best for their products. I would have used GN4 Honda oil but it was $20 for a gallon. I went with Wal-Mart SuperTech oil, 3 quarts for about $7. I'll probably kick myself for it later lol. Fuel Dump on Talawana Track - 1974 Yamaha Canning Stock Route Dirt Bike Expedition - 1974 Even in those days the Talawanna Track was a important access to the Lake Disappointment area and beyond. The fuel dump was used for those proceeding further in inland on the Talawanna Track. Up to that point in time only one of two 4WD a year, would make the journey each year from Wiluna to Halls Creek, and in the central part of the stock route there was no defined track. This caused some navigation difficulties for the riders, and we were unable to locate them for two days from the aircraft, despite searching for hours. We did locate a lone aboriginal running through the desert lighting fires about 45 miles SE of Lake Disappointment. The aircraft being low on fuel we did not waste time identifying the riders, but prepared to make the drop at the location of the last fire being lit. I was about to push the fuel out the door when I recognised it was just a lone and naked aboriginal, not the bikes or riders at all. He was the last remaining nomadic aboriginal in Australia. I often wonder what he thought as we lined the aircraft up for the drop and flew over him at about 20 feet. The motorbikes on the expedition relied entirely on fuel dropped in 1 litter oil cans wrapped in foam from the aircraft. Dirt biking on honda dreams Pakse - attapeu 4 day loop and waterfall trip. Great scenery, mountains, forest, clouds, rain etc and one hell of a mud fest - this is the good part of the mud track! We made 5ks in around 45 mins, when the locals started skidding and falling of we called it a day and turned around. I will be back in dry season to see the waterfall and complete the loop. 3four7.5six5 These magic fingers have multiple talents... Not many of you will know but before I started working in the hospitality industry, I worked as a factory hand.... and I loved it (well, certain parts of it). My mum pulled me out of school at the age of 15, because she said "I wasn't applying myself" and so she made me get a job. To tell you the truth it was the best thing she ever did. That year I worked in two factories and learnt that I was really good with my hands. My passion was for machining and making various items that the factory needed. I was offered an apprenticeship and then the company went bankrupt! The other passion that I picked up that year was my love for mountain bikes and most of my pay went to doing up my bike each week... this was short lived as it got stolen after a few months! I moved on to a sheet metal factory that made water tanks, I work there for four years. Starting out as factory hand I worked my way up to a store person and then got myself an office job within the company. I loved making things, designing new features for the tanks and watching ideas turn into products. While working here I bought my second bike and over the space of six years I had spent nearly $6000 on it. Just before I stopped working in factories and warehouses I sold this bike and stopped riding for several years. I started working in my first hotel as an assistant manager and twelve months later I was the manager..... and a few months after this my partner of seven years broke up with me.... The first thing I did was walk straight into a bike shop and bought miss HR!! The love of my life! I don't know where'd I be without this bike... it manages to pull me away from the hard times and get me outside doing what I love, riding. This week for some reason I've made three trips to the bike shop. As she is just over a year old, I feel it's time for some upgrades, a bit of servicing and some tlc! So here I am stripping down my pedals and giving them an overhaul... with the fingers that began my working life. New (old) frame: Marin Pine Mountain I finally have a new frame: Marin Pine Mountain steel 21". I bought it second hand. Actually I bought the whole bike, though it just had a few original parts: cantilevers, headset and front derrailleur. The rest was a mix of stx and unknown parts. The overall condition is good. Just some superficial rust that I am still wondering how to remove before painting. I stripped down the bike as soon as I recieved it to prepare it for the powdercoating but i have to decided the color yet. So many good options out there! The frame, despite its size, it´s surprisingly light. I was planning it to be my next touring bike but I am afraid that it is too delicate to haul panniers and a big load. 20080206153103-bryan I was walking around Kumily when this woman's neighbor waved me over to her house. We had some tea, and I met a lot of neighbors and relatives. This photo appeared in the following ideotrope albums: Southern Kerala and Tamil Nadu - February 2008 - On the road in India At Thanksgiving Rudi reminded me of a grim statistic regarding Indian traffic: India has 4% (or is it 5?) of the world's motor vehicles and 25% of the world's traffic fatalities. Even having visited India once before, I couldn't imagine the chaos and frequent danger of being on the road. Of course the conditions we encountered ran the gamut from smooth, quiet country lanes where our tandem was the fastest on the road to unbelievable chaos where it felt like a bit of a miracle to make it through the day. By the end of five weeks though, we never crashed, and except for one goat I can't even recall that we ran into anything. As in the U.S. the traffic law in India seems to be that if you get there first, you have the right to the road. This law is taken to its logical extreme such that there's really no reason to ever look behind you. Pay attention to what's in front, be ready to brake and avoid sudden turns. In this sense I could see order to it all and certainly enjoyed heavy, slower traffic to the far too common high-speed chicken matches with buses which left us more than once bouncing off the edge of the tarmac. It's no surprise that fatal bus accidents are reported almost daily in the newspaper. Coastal Kerala We arrived at the Thiruvananthapuram airport at about 4am and cycled out of the "city" 26 hours later. The city hardly ended. During our first three days of pedaling, I'm not sure that we were ever out of sight of people and buildings. Perhaps we shouldn't have found this surprising. Kerala has the highest population density of any state in India. And within the state the highest density is found in the southern half of the state on the flat strip of land between the sea and the hills - exactly where we rode the first three days. We mostly avoided the fast traffic of the main road, usually riding a road closer to the coast. The network of paved roads is dense. There are many possibilities. It wasn't always easy to follow these roads, and I can think of three funny incidents from these first three days: We were on a narrow road with a fair bit of bus traffic. We noticed lighter traffic. Suddenly the road ended, and we looked across 100m of water with no bridge. Thinking we had missed a turn, we backtracked and quickly came to the spot where the buses turn around. Locals directed us back to the water and down a sandy single track where we loaded onto an oversized canoe with a motorcyclist and another bicyclist. Two men poled the craft across, and soon we were on our way again. Further north on a similar narrow road we somehow managed to miss the main fork. The road continued to narrow and narrow until we were on a three-foot wide dirt track between two walls. Still we continued and cycled right into someone's yard! All found it amusing. In another section we had been warned that the coastal road was a bit broken in places and we'd have to push the bike so we weren't surprised to come upon a sandy single track. It was surprising to come upon a mahout on his elephant traveling in the opposite direction on this track. It was very sandy off the track and thinking the elephant would have an easier time of it than we would I kept on the track. The mahout hollered at us, and we were quite close before we ducked out of the way! Cardamom Hills After three days of riding to Alappuzha we were ready to try anything besides the Kerala coastal strip so we headed east into the hills. In less than 10km we came to the most peaceful, beautiful riding that we'd seen up to that point. Of course it all wasn't like that, but we had made a good choice. We rode for three days to get to the Kumily/Thekkadi/Periyar tourist area and two more to get to more beautiful, more touristy, and higher Munnar. We climbed a lot on four of those days, but the roads were well-graded and simply by luck rather than any planning we only had a couple climbs that lasted more than 15km. On the other hand after climbing out of Munnar, we descended about 70km down to Kurichikottai. That would have been a brutal climb. Through the hills and mountains we pedaled in misty, forested areas where all we could hear was the sounds of monkeys and birds. I thought of Jack Zuzack and the sounds he recorded on his 'round the world trip. We also rode through cardamom (these are the Cardamom Hills after all), rubber, tea, coffee, pepper, jackfruit, and coconut. The tea plantations were particularly beautiful as they seem to glow a translucent green. The Tamil Nadu plains Along the road from Munnar we met David who invited us to stay with his family in Kurichikottai, our first night in Tamil Na 20080213133147-bryan I looked over, and Julie and this woman were looking at a map and animatedly attempting to communicate. But by the time I had the camera ready they were posing.
