Bad bike parking

Bad bike parking

This is an example if bad bike parking. This rack is at Best Buy's
South Loop location on Roosevelt and Clinton, just north of Home Depot
which also has bad bike parking.

What is wrong?

1. This style bike rack requests that cyclists respectfully lock their
bikes perpendicular to the curb. In doing so, the bike will block more
than 60% of the sidewalk width. If a cyclist recognizes this and locks
thief bike parallel to the rack, the amount of bikes that can be
locked to this rack is reduced.

2. The distance between each wave is so small that only one bike can
fit in the wave. City wave racks are crafted with waves that allow two
bikes in each wave.

3. This rack can easily be stolen and I will not be surprised when it
is. Gaze your eyes to the rack's attachment point at the base. Only
the base is "firmly" joined to the sidewalk while the rack is joined
to the base with a simple bolt and nut.

4. Location. This rack faces a blank wall of the Best Buy, over 100
feet away from the entrance. No one is looking out for this rack or
this stretch of the street.

Best Buy installed this same rack on the north side of the building,
on Roosevelt.

AAgora market, Athens, Nov 2011 - 70

AAgora market, Athens, Nov 2011 - 70

(more details later, as time permits)

*******************************************

On my second trip to Athens, I knew I would have one day free before I had to hop on an airplane for the long, 11-hour flight back to New York City. But what to do, what to see on my day off?? It was mid-November, and while the sun was out, the temperature was chilly; I didn't expect to see any well-dressed young men and women strutting down the main streets in their summer outfits.

I thought I might head down to the Parliament building in the middle of the city, to see what the protesters were up to -- after all, they had been there in full force back in June, and I expected they would still be grumpy about the austerity measures being proposed by the new Prime Minister. But several people told me that the demonstrations were over. "Besides," said one Athens native, "they don't protest on Saturday." In Greece, apparently the revolutionaries need to rest on the weekend.

Of course, I could have gone back to the Acropolis; and I could have found any number of statues, columns, pillars, and ancient buildings to photograph. But I wanted something a little livelier, so I ended up at the Agora Central Market in downtown Athens...

Wow - what an experience: it makes the farmer's markets that I've seen throughout the U.S. look pretty tame by comparison. Along Athinas Street, there's a huge, block-long complex with four long rows of stalls; two of them are filled with every conceivable kind of fish, and two of them are filled with every conceivable kind of meat. All of this is laid out on tables, hung from racks, and presented by exuberant vendors in their individual stalls, shouting at the top of their voice to let the entire world know what it is they're selling. At least I think that's what they were shouting; it was all Greek to me, in quite literal terms.

And it seemed that half the population of Athens had come down to the market to inspect the offerings, and do their meat/fish shopping for the week. I think it may have been even busier during the morning hours, but it was still jammed when I arrived a little after noon. People pushed, shoved, jostled, elbowed, grunted, yelled, and haggled with the vendors. And all around us, in two of the block-long rows of stalls, were sides of beef, rows of steak, lines of chickens and ducks and geese, pigs, rabbits, and strange animals I couldn't even identify. As for the fish, in the other two rows of stalls: I have no idea what most of them were, other than the occasional familiar sight of salmon, octopus, crabs, and shrimp. There were some large fish that looked like trout, and some small fish with incredibly long, pointy snouts. There were teeny ones and big ones, short ones and long ones curled around in a circle, skinny ones and fat ones.

Across the street, perpendicular to the meat/fish markets, were two more lines of vendor stalls, but these were outdoors with no roof covering. Fruits and vegetables of all kinds, along with olives and grapes and eggs were being hawked by vendors who were only slightly less noisy than their comrades across the street.

I spent almost four hours wandering around the market, photographing the food, the vendors, and the customers; as usual, the people were more interesting than anything else. I ended up with 700 images, and after making the first couple passes to eliminate the blurred shots, the mis-framed shots that cut off the head of the person I was photographing, and the frustrating incidents where someone walked in front of my camera just as I was pushing the shutter button ... I still had 150 photos that I wanted to upload to Flickr. But I knew that that would be overkill, so I forced myself to continue editing and discarding until I got down to 70 "keepers."

I'm not sure if I want to return to the Agora market in the summertime, when the temperatures are hot, and the odors from all of those animals get a little overwhelming. But at least in the fall, it's a trip well worth making -- and I recommend it next time you're in Athens!

Remains of the day...

Remains of the day...

Early home from work, and enough daylight remains for me to shoot something outdoors for a change...

Unfortunately, I have more of a scrap heap than a garden, but it occasionally throws up some interesting textures of decaying elements such as bicycles and this old rusting tray, covered in detritus from sundry animals and the like.

My Surly Cross Check

My Surly Cross Check

So here's my big, goofy Surly Cross Check (AKA 'Willie', AKA 'the dump truck') in its current mild-mannered Schwinn Suburban winter mode. It's a 62cm 2010 model. I bought it as a complete bike minus the wheels and put on my Mavic Open Pros with Ultegra hubs. Other doo-dads include MKS Touring pedals, Power Grip pedal straps (great around town), Planet Bike fenders, Spooky CX brakes with green SwisStop Rat pads, a Thomson Elite stem, a Brooks B-17 saddle and the pičce de résistance, an old school Ringle Mojo front brake peace sign cable hanger.
Since I took this picture, I have added a set of 35c Schwalbe Marathon tires. I have also gotten an Ultegra 6500 2x9 drivetrain which I will probably wait to put on until next spring when the weather gets nice. When that happens, I ditch the fenders and replace the tires with 25c Continental Gatorskins. I know an Ultegra drivetrain and skinny-ish roadie tires is kind of a goofy build for a Cross Check but one of the cool things about Surlys is they are such versatile bikes, they kinda lend themselves to bicycicular self-expression. They can be just about whatever you want them to be!

Montagne's Commuter Bike

Montagne's Commuter Bike

I custom built this bike during the summer of 2007 with Jerry, the owner of Rainbow Jersey Bicycles located in Shorewood, Wisconsin USA. I learned quite a bit from this experience and made many mistakes during the process. I originally designed this bike with an XtraCycle attachment, and that was a total disaster so we went back to a traditional style build.

I really like this bike. It is a solid blend between comfort, speed, durability, and commuter necessity. My roundtrip commute is about 22 miles each day, and this bike works out great for me. I hope this gives you a few ideas to consider if you are thinking about designing your own commuter bike.

Oh, one final thing. Total cost was around $1200 USD.

Originating in Los Angeles in June 1985, Guns N' Roses' originally was formed by singer Axl Rose, guitarist Tracii Guns, guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Robbie Gardner, The name was derived from a combination of Tracii Guns and Axl Rose's pseudonymous last names. Shortly after inception guitarist Slash and drummer Stephen Adler replaced Guns and Gardner.

The band released a self-produced EP, Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide, in 1986. Copies of the EP reached Geffen Records executives who soon signed the band.

Appetite for Destruction, GNR's Geffen debut, was released on August 21, 1987. The album sold 20 million copies, had three top 10 singles, and hit #1 on the charts. The album includes massive hits in Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child o’ Mine and Paradise City and to date has sold over 28 million copies worldwide. Including another great hit in Patience. In 1990 Guns N' Roses returned to the studio with new drummer Matt Sorum and keyboardist Dizzy Reed to begin work on the band's most ambitious undertaking yet. On September 17, 1991 they released contemporaneously Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, which debuted as #2 and #1 on the charts. These albums included an assortment of further hits including November Rain, You Could be Mine, Don’t Cry, Civil War and covers of the Wings hit, Live or Let Die, and Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.

Taken at a skating park in Chandler, Arizona, about a mile from where Lisa lives. The boys who were spending that afternoon skateboarding and riding their BMX bikes at that park took a great deal of interest in what we were doing! Lisa and I want to go back there sometime when the lighting will be less harsh and contrasty, because I didn't get many good shots at that location this time.

My reflection and that of the flash are visible on Lisa's sunglasses.

Torker Cargo T Mod. at Flying Pigeon LA bike shop

The Torker Cargo T pictured above is a rough, tough, get stuff done kind of bike. Unlike its larger cousins the bakfiets, Nihola, or Yuba Mundo, the Cargo T can fit onto a bus or train while laden with 150lbs+ of cargo or kids. It features a center kick stand, a locking headset, 3-speed Shimano Nexus hub with coaster brake, a roller brake up front, a chain case, fenders, and those awesome racks!

The Torker Cargo T retails normally for $600 (as of this writing). This particular bike has some extras added to it: we stuck on a battery powered headlamp and tail light. We also installed an Abus wheel lock on the rear wheel. These extras add about $50 to the price of the bike (by our guesstimates).

A fine bike for doing some serious work, and making serious work a pleasurable thing!

This is a late 80's / early 90's Raleigh Routier. This frame was given to me by my good friend Aaron; it belonged to his late grandfather. We built it up as a budget street fixed machine. Cheap-o road wheels, a 46t 1/8" BMX chainring, chopped'n'cropped bars and a Brooks Conquest. The frame is small, but the long toptube and the bullhorns compensate. A front brake (with a cool BMX lever that came with the BMX I got when I was 7) and a bell keeps me road-legal. The bell is useful, as the only sound this machine makes is the wind in the spokes...

A Christmas present for my Dad. Bought it cheap from eBay, not a bad bike but obviously built to a budget. Plenty good enough for him to pootle down to the pub and back on.

I had to replace the pedals as the cheap plastic ones were worn and wobbly. One was seized on and I had to hacksaw some of it off to finally remove it. It takes old skool size BMX pedals, which luckily I had a pair of Diamondback's donated to me a while ago.

As we stood in a Boulangerie at lunch time this morning, I found myself faintly worried. Worried that we were taking the long way round, worried that we were in the mountains, and worried that it was lunch time and I still hadn't seen or thought of something worth blogging about. At that point though a woman with a moustache walked in, her pet ferret trailing on a lead behind her, and I knew that at least one of my problems had been solved. I don't know where she got the customised ferret harness, or even if the animal, preoccupied in rolling around on the polished floor, was allowed in the shop. I think there's a serious loop hole there though. When was the last time you saw a shop with a 'no animals' sign? Sure, there are plenty of 'no dogs allowed' warnings, but in defence of my ferret, Mr security guard, your sign said no dogs except for guide dogs, and I assure you that my pet is neither.

Today's picture, as you can see, is not the promised Viaduct du Millau, but not because we couldn't find it. The bridge was so magnificent in it's near two and a half kilometer span that it was impossible to get a decent photo of it without a telescopic lense and a helicopter. I'll post the photos I did get when I have the chance, but if you're that interested just google it. In a previous version of today's post, I instead spoke for a whole paragraph about how amazing the 36000 tonne road was, or how the tallest of the seven pillars is almost higher than the Eiffel tower, but the phone crashed and the blog was lost. At the same time I spilt wine all over the map, burnt myself on the cooker and was swarmed by blood thirsty insects. The god of comic timing is watching me today, laughing. Or just bad luck. A woman tried to sell me a ticket for a competition today, where I stood to win a television. I declined, partly because I hate television, partly because I don't live in France, but mainly because I don't trust my luck. She gave up on the competition idea and we stood beside a shop studying watches in the window together instead. I'm uncertain about luck, but surreal moments follow me closely, and I enjoy their company.
Dad and I bought a new, more powerful stove today too, because although the old one is in perfect working condition, the canisters it uses are nowhere to be found this side of the channel. A terrible reason to buy a new stove, we know, but without our own cooking equipment, eating is very expensive.
I'd like to tell you the name of the valley town we're camped in, with vertical rocky faces scaling both sides, but i've forgotten it, and the map is on the drying line dripping local wine, so i'll tell you instead that we managed 106km today and are very pleased with that distance. There were more hills today then yesterday, including, after the long climb, an exciting, curving descent through the forests that must have been almost 10km of freewheeling that I won't forget. And as we rode under the Viaduct today, the road dropped into an unexpectedly steep descent, and to my astonishment (Mum, love you, but skip to the end of this paragraph) I broke my speed record, previously set on Evelix down a hill into Cheltnam on route to lands end. Although the steering is sensitive, the weight gives the bike good stability and control, and it never feels anywhere near as fast as it is. Evelix reached 67.5 km/h [or 42.2 mph if you like] today, and refused outright to go faster [the previous top speed had been 66.7]. I'm delighted though; I didn't think i'd ever find such a hill again.

Anyway, this is about the go to print, so I just want to wrap with this thought. To those not in the loop, and i'd imagine they are few indeed, mpg, or miles per gallon, is essentially a measure of fuel usage/efficiency used on motorised transport. But I wonder if it could be transposed to us, on our bikes, to compare our fuel to distance ratio with, for example, a BMW X5. And I see no reason why not. If you blended all our food and water and snacks for a day together and measured the volume in gallons, then how far we could ride before we need to eat again, you'd get a number comparable to what car I wonder? Are we more efficient then a Honda Hybrid engine, or do we guzzle more gas they a Hummer? If you've got the time (or you're Emily Tann) then please do the math for us and comment below. I'd love to know. You can assume we drink four half litre bottles a day, with a few french breads and a generous amount of pasta and can ride perhaps 130km on a 'full tank', though we're seldom motivated to do so.

Big love

Why does God allow natural disasters?

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bike. Then I realised that The Lord doesn't work that way, so I stole one and asked him to forgive me.

The answer to natural disasters and disease is actually real simple. We need to die somehow, were already pushing overpopulation in many parts of the world. Death is important and necessary to human survival, in certain countries I think war would even be justified for the greater good. Life is not sacred, its meaningless, even Haiti meant nothing statistically, with billions of people on the world you could kill 10 million and not have a thing to worry about, more people would take there place in terms of production and those people could actually eat instead of starve.

Thats just my view, I know its different when its a loved one you lose and I do sympathize with people coping with loss and issues which arise from natural disasters, particularly emotional issues.

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is impotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Whence then is evil?"

I'm someone who wants to believe in God. I did, until about age 10-11, and it gave me great comfort and memories that are good and still with me. But then in my own less sophisticated way the thought behind Hume's words above sort of haunted my belief. For me, the "mysterious ways" response that lamely explains the contradiction is a fine, maybe quintessential example of a cop-out.

But if you were in charge of say an ant farm and the ants were reproducing too fast, would you flood the farm or seperate the queen from the other ants to slow the population growth? Since you could just as easily do either.
