True to its name, the brown snake (Storeria dekayi) is dark brown to grayish brown in color. It generally has a broad light stripe bordered by dark spots down the back. The belly is pink or buff colored, sometimes with rows of small black spots. As a juvenile it has a light ring around the neck. However, unlike the ringneck snake, the brown snake has keeled scales.

Brown snakes emerge from hibernation after the ground thaws in the spring. They typically mate in spring or early summer, and 8-20 young are born alive from mid-July through August. Although they are generally forced into hibernation by November, brown snakes may emerge briefly during periods of warm winter weather.

Found in a variety of wild habitats such as wetlands, grasslands and forests, brown snakes are most often encountered in urban or residential areas. It is not uncommon to find several (or many) brown snakes under debris in vacant lots, parks and cemeteries. Earthworms and slugs are their preferred foods; however, they will also take sow bugs, insects, spiders, small fish and small frogs. They are active during the daytime in spring and fall, but are primarily nocturnal during the summer. Brown snakes rarely bite but, like most snakes, will release musk from their anal glands when alarmed.

Named for a yellow band around the neck, the ringneck snake is relatively easy to identify when encountered. Its back is either slate gray, black or brown with smooth scales giving it a satin-like appearance. A complete yellow ring just behind the head, along with smooth scales, distinguishes it from redbelly or juvenile brown snakes. The belly is bright yellow or rarely orange, and may occasionally bear a few small black spots. Was in my greenhouse this afternoon. Took the pics and returned to the wild.

I used to be a huge fan of Promise Ring. I mean, more than a relatively mid-level indie band should deserve to have. I wasn't alone. My whole group of friend would see them every time they would come down from Milwaukee to play the bigger city down here.

When they broke up I was heartbroken. But not enough to follow two of the members into their new band Maritime.

I had no idea this band existed until Samantha pointed out that they were playing Wicker Park Fest. I hadn't planned on heading down Milwaukee Avenue until later in the evening.

I'm glad I did. The band was incredible!

I can only make an educated guess that this was for the first JTB show in San Francisco. It was kind of awesome, although I really don't remember the Promise Ring playing at all.

All this happened just about ten years ago.

'Free or Die' is very stylish and very good, but it sounds like only for few talented and lucky ones who were able to be around UNIX machines and such environments. If they've worn the slogan like this, then that might have been - [Not that I know enough about Berkeley Free BSD people - at that slogan's time. - hey, but we may know someone.]

Sometimes I don't know 'geeks' those days were running towards people, or rather always lived in caves and sometimes came around and showed off their stuff - and ran back to the caves.

(So more questions is then who came to the idea - that they might be able to 'run' towards people - on what grounds (business, DTP, education? - or Engelbart like dream and passion?) and started that runs. We need these kind of analysis surely developed about the history of 'popularization of application of computation'. Otherwise, we aren't thinking or reading at all.)

I wondered about this so long, as I walked around Telegraph, Durant, Bancroft - Shattuck, Hearst, Euclid - and MLK and Derby.

Everytime I had a chance to be in used books store and had some intellect left - I wanted to find a small booklet which - sharply - pinpoints to this issue and debunk all the myth and soundbites, and fuzzy haze we all got about 'computers' and 'internet' and 'web'.

I wished so hard someone already had the answers. Someone wrote the book about all that happened. But no. Much of those books were very limited, doesn't really have focus on constructing entire context on which people can really think about 'applications' - what supposed to be possible, or 'can be made possible' - or just a dreams - illusions.

Alan Kay is the only person I know who kind of talks about these issues - in very fast and often very 'fast' ways - so actually we don't get concrete 'grips' of the issues. I believe he knows those details and concrete infos but he just doesn't get to write them down or talk them down.

So who thought 'populatization of computation gadgets' among general population - would be meaningful - in what ways? and how many different 'camps' and positions existed there and how all they went.

When he talks of necessity of history of computer sciecen to be written (in OLPC mailing list, decrying about today's yonger generation hackers and geeks utter ignorance or shallow 'camp' mentalities) -

I believe he includes this issue as a part of the story. Engelbart said 'everyone got to work more collaboratively.' And I don't know what Xerox Parc was at - probably had many different inclinations and ideas, without real sorting platform building, just everyone had different whims and ideas, day by day. (it was such a diverse place.)

And then Kay was there at when Apple got the some idea about this. Engelbart was there too. Steve Jobs didn't get any of the visions researchers had. Only took GUI thing,
didn't have any intellectuality or senses to get the ideas. He only took eye candies...

And I only read Engelbart's - nearly screaming - lines about how it was not supposed to go this way say 10 years, 20 years later. And Alan Kay kind of agrees to this but he is with kids. (Only account is that via Howard Rheingold that Alan Kay thought Engelbart's stuff is too complex -...)

And Alan Kay talks in Japan that 'revolution may not arrive in the time span we are still alive. That's going to happen in maybe in the middle of this century.' [I don't know it's a mistranslation or he slipped his tongue or what. In English domain, by so far, I haven't hear

Like other reptiles, turtles are "cold-blooded" (or poikilothermic — "of varying temperature"[2]). Like other amniotes (reptiles, dinosaurs, birds, and mammals), they breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water. The largest turtles are aquatic.

The largest chelonian is the great leatherback sea turtle, which reaches a shell length of 200 cm (80 inches) and can reach a weight of over 900 kg (2,000 lb, or 1 short ton). Freshwater turtles are generally smaller, but with the largest species, the Asian softshell turtle Pelochelys cantorii, a few individuals have been reported up to 200 cm or 80 in (Das, 1991). The smallest turtle is the Speckled Padloper Tortoise of South Africa. It measures no more than 8 cm (3 in) in length and weighs about 140 g (5 oz). Two other species of small turtles are the American mud turtles and musk turtles that live in an area that ranges from Canada to South America. The shell length of many species in this group is less than 13 cm (5 in) in length.

Turtles are broken down into two groups, according to how they evolved a solution to the problem of withdrawing their neck into their shell (something the ancestral Proganochelys could not do): the Cryptodira, which can draw their neck in while contracting it under their spine; and the Pleurodira, which contract their neck to the side.

Most turtles that spend most of their life on land have their eyes looking down at objects in front of them. Some aquatic turtles, such as snapping turtles and soft-shelled turtles, have eyes closer to the top of the head. These species of turtles can hide from predators in shallow water where they lie entirely submerged except for their eyes and nostrils. Sea turtles possess glands near their eyes that produce salty tears that rid their body of excess salt taken in from the water they drink.

Turtles are thought to have exceptional night vision due to the unusually large number of rod cells in their retinas. Turtles have color vision with a wealth of cone subtypes with sensitivities ranging from the near Ultraviolet (UV A) to Red. Some land turtles have very poor pursuit movement abilities, which are normally reserved for predators that hunt quick moving prey, but carnivorous turtles are able to move their heads quickly to snap.

Turtles have a rigid beak. Turtles use their jaws to cut and chew food. Instead of teeth, the upper and lower jaws of the turtle are covered by horny ridges. Carnivorous turtles usually have knife-sharp ridges for slicing through their prey. Herbivorous turtles have serrated-edged ridges that help them cut through tough plants. Turtles use their tongues to swallow food, but they cannot, unlike most reptiles, stick out their tongues to catch food.


Shell
The upper shell of the turtle is called the carapace. The lower shell that encases the belly is called the plastron. The carapace and plastron are joined together on the turtle's sides by bony structures called bridges. The inner layer of a turtle's shell is made up of about 60 bones that includes portions of the backbone and the ribs, meaning the turtle cannot crawl out of its shell. In most turtles, the outer layer of the shell is covered by horny scales called scutes that are part of its outer skin, or epidermis. Scutes are made up of a fibrous protein called keratin that also makes up the scales of other reptiles. These scutes overlap the seams between the shell bones and add strength to the shell. Some turtles do not have horny scutes. F

Wednesday, October 17, 1990 - The Syracuse rush hour crept past old downtown. Past gray stone and red brick buildings covered in pre-dawn black. The people in the cars heard the same story:

``Good morning, WSYR radio news ... This is the day thousands of Central New Yorkers have been waiting for - the opening of the Carousel Center Mall.''


Thousands? Some guessed a half million would show before the week was out. For this is a showcase Pyramid mall, built by the same Syracuse company ready to build a giant mall in Wallkill. The Pyramid watchword is out of Field of Dreams: ``Build it and they will come.''

The people had come to Pyramid malls in Buffalo, Watertown, Poughkeepsie, Plattsburgh. On this morning, the people came streaming out of central Syracuse by the dawn's early light. They came down from Binghamton and Canada on a pilgrammage to the new mecca.

The mall rose to view at the end of Hiawatha Boulevard. God. It was a glass and metal shrine with a towering cathedral roof, shining like a 21st century Oz.

It stood on 700 acres of what had first been an Onondaga Indian fishing village. Later, it was a stop on the underground slave railroad. Only last year, city residents had still called it Oil City, an industrial graveyard of abandoned factories and smelly refineries.

Now it was Carousel Center and this was ribbon-cutting day. Parents had skipped work and kept their kids out of school. The Syracuse TV crews set up, their ``A'' team anchors set to smile. Radio deejays broadcast live.

People walked inside the mall and they suddenly hushed. They gasped at four glass elevators that scaled the five-balcony atrium wall. They stared at the huge antique carousel. Some window-shopped the 105 stores. They oohed at Bonwit Tellers, aaahed at the fancy Penney's. Others peeked at Victoria Secret or stood dwarfed by 30-foot high plants.

``Something else, huh?'' marveled Don McMillon, standing in the atrium. He has taken a vacation day from his job as maintenance man at a nearby school district. ``I just wanted to be here - this is the future.''

McMillon and thousands stood behind a roped-off area, where VIPS sat and stared at men in suits on a stage. At 9:30 on the dot, trumpeters dressed as heralds rang out from the balconies.

The men on the stage were introduced. They were Congressman, Councilmen, Stare Senators, Pyramid bigwigs.

Then he rose, Pyramid chief Bob Congel. He wore a fighter's face, a neighbor's smile and a king's bearing. He spoke to warm applause about this great day that had finally come. After all, he said, there were ``bruises'' along the way.

He must have been talking about the rashes on mall construction workers. Soon after, it was said PCBs were oozing from the site. Or maybe he was referring to mysterious accidents during mall construction. Just last month, a tire flew off a truck on the interstate, hurled into the mall site, seriously injuring two workers. Some Onondaga Indians blamed the accidents on ``something being disturbed'' from the old fishing village.

Or perhaps it was the disclosure of the new tax breaks to Pyramid the city is suddenly considering extending from 15 years to 25 years. Or the disclosure that Pyramid's payments in lieu of taxes might not go to school taxes at all, but strictly to improvements around the mall. Some taxpayer's were unhappy subsidizing a millionaire's mall.

But on this day, all was forgotten. They gave a spontaneous standing ovation for Congel, the gracious giver of new shopping possibilities. Even anti-Puramid grumblers mumbled the name of a store they wished to visit.

Congel said this was just the beginning of the development around the mall. There would be more, a marina.

``It's a miracle,'' said Eric Nordheim of Syracuse, a retired engineer. ``They oughta give this guy a medal.''

Syracuse mayor Tom Young stepped up to the mike and fawned over Congel. He was just about ignored. It was easy to see on this day he no longer ran the city.

Fawning next was Onondaga County Executive Nick Pirro: ``If you ask Bob Congel what he does, he'll tell you he's a cookie cutter. He goes aroundthe country, finds a location and cuts a cookie. Well, this is his finest cookie.''

And so on the spot where Indians fished and slaves ran, 25 white men and one white woman stood on a platform, each with a scissor in his hand. ``Three, two, one ...Cut!''

The ribbon snapped. People charged off to shop. Congel took the politicians for a ride on the merry-go-round. Kids flocked to Congel, asking him for his autograph.

Nobody even asked the mayor where the rest rooms were. Which was a good thing because the toilets were stopped up. The stench of human waste wafted into the food court, mixing with the aroma of burgers, dogs and tacos.

Few seemed to mind. Outside people kept streaming in, 40,000 by the evening. TV interviewed everyone about ``the Emerald City.'' Radio stations broadcast live all day. Come to the `retail Disneyland,'' a deejay beckoned.

Grandmother Spider Steals the Fire

Now, when Earth was brand new, there was much confusion, for there was darkness everywhere. All of Earth's Peoples kept bumping into each other, and were often hurt. They all cried out for light, that they might see.

Fox said that he knew of some people on the other side of the world who had plenty light. He said that it was nice and warm, but those people were too greedy to share it with anyone else. Possum said that he would steal Sun. "I have a beautiful, bushy tail," he said. "I can hide the Sun in all of that fur. Let me try."

So Possum went to the other side of the world and found the Sun. It was hanging up in a Tree and lighting up everything. Possum took a piece of the Sun and hid it in the fur of his tail. But Sun was so hot that it burned all of Possum's tail hairs off. To this day, Possum has a bare tail. The people discovered Possum and took the piece of the Sun back.

Buzzard said, "I will take the Sun myself. I will put it on my head, so that I can see where I am going with it." So he tried to take the Sun too. He flew to the other side of the world, and dived down to snare the Sun in his claws. But it was so hot that it burned all of Buzzard's feathers off of his head. To this day, Buzzard's head is bald and ugly. The people discovered Buzzard, and took the Sun back.

Then Grandmother Spider said, "Let me try." First, she made a very thick clay pot, big enough to put the Sun in. Then, she spun a web which reached all the way to the other side of the world. She was so small and quiet that these people did not notice her at all. When she was ready, she quickly snatched up the Sun in her big clay pot, and hurried back home along her web. Now her side of the world had light, and warmth. Everyone rejoiced at Grandmother Spider's gift.

According to historians, Mardi Gras dates back thousands of years to pagan celebrations of spring and fertility, including the raucous Roman festivals of Saturnalia and Lupercalia. When Christianity arrived in Rome, religious leaders decided to incorporate these popular local traditions into the new faith, an easier task than abolishing them altogether. As a result, the excess and debauchery of the Mardi Gras season became a prelude to Lent, the 40 days of penance between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Along with Christianity, Mardi Gras spread from Rome to other European countries, including France, Germany, Spain and England.

Two titanium rings. The one on the left is based on one of the three rings (besides my wedding band) that I normally wear. It features a 5/16" band with a slightly narrower titanium strip that is riveted and wrapped in place. In the gap between the ends of the titanium strip is a small platform with a 4.5 mm bezel set chrome diopside cab. On either side of the cab are three 14k gold granules.

I really like how this ring turned out. I started with a double half round band and added a titanium wire which I held in place via stitches that are soldered onto the silver (you cannot solder titanium so it presents unique challenges). Between the ends of the titanium wire is a bezel-set 4 mm black onyx cabochon. It is simple and bold. A strong design that is both elegant and masculine at the same time.

The contrast between the cold surfaces of glass and steel with the warmth of feelings, sterile materials are set against her heart, which is a swirl of emotions. The endless waiting at the table of someone unknown and that we do not know if he will ever come. The awareness of belonging to someone, the ring suggests the bond, no matter how much our feelings are reciprocated.
