Alex is a Yorkshire Terrier, a Yorkie. He weighed 4 1/2 pounds at his heaviest. He is only half the size of a normal size cat. Alex has spunk in spite of his size. He was bought from a breeder and had breathing problems. He was the “runt” of the litter. My daughter had always wanted a Yorkie but it was so difficult getting him on his feet and healthy. He is 12 years old at this writing.

He was so small and light weight that if he was running and wanted to stop in a hurry he would put the front brakes on his little behind and back legs would go straight up in the air, it was so funny to watch. Sometimes he would run into things before he could stop.

He lived with my daughter for several years but as time went on he started staying more and more with me. There were times that we shared a house, while we were building new homes, or looking for a place to rebuild. Consequently he became very close to Butch, my Poodle. Sue and I built houses next door to each other and fenced the back yards into one large, privacy fenced yard. Even though he lived next door he would be waiting for me to come home then he would come over and eat with Butch. Even though he had the same food at his house, he would only eat with Butch. They were inseparable for 12 years, until Butch’s death. Butch’s life is another beautiful story. Alex took the loss of his best friend so hard he quit eating. He was in deep depression and I thought I would lose him, but he is still hanging on and beginning to eat again, but only selective eating. He has found that doughnuts are one of his favorites and he also eats cat food. I believe it is because there is someone to share it with. It has been suggested that I get him another “doggie pal”. I’m not sure yet. Because Alex is blind it might be very difficult for him to adjust to another dog. I don’t want to put any additional stress in his life.

Alex is a very loving, needy dog. He requires much love, always has to be close whether at night or during the day. He loves to growl at the cats. The big cat, Midnight, slaps him across the face it he gets too close to her bowl while she is still eating, but she never puts her claws out. She really is very gentle with him. She used to slap him in the behind when he would walk past her and then she would run and hide. They have a pretty good relationship. They are so funny to watch. Midnight is three times Alex’s size but he still stands up to her.

My home will be so quiet when something happens to him. He is very vocal, he talks all the time and often whines when he wants something and as annoying as that is at times, I will sorely will miss it.

Update on Alex he is finally beginning to eat, but still not a very good appetite, still very worried about him but he is trying. It's been over 7 months since Butch left us but his new pal Molly is helping a great deal.
