324:365 Tear my hair out

Ok, so, i have to say, i reserve "hate" for a few select things. Cleaning tile, maggots, mayonaise, and ignorance.

Today, i did my very best to be straightforward, level headed, clear, calm and communicative with the people who ruined my car. Despite all of that, by 4pm when they had done nothing productive and i was getting a very clear, "stop being an irrational girl" from talking to them the guy i'm dating called them.

Here is what he said," Listen, even if you send the filter out to be tested aren't you gonna cover this repair either way?"

Check, i said that.

"It would be good of you guys just talked to Toyota since they have clear evidence of how this happened."

Said it!

"All she wants to know is that this is being taken care of."

check, Check, CHECK.

And yet he got answers and understanding whereas i got exasperation and mumbling and dissembling.

The pure sexism of it all is tardulous. Makes me want to tear my hair out.

The living dead who think their talents place them above the laws of nature
Lords of darkness with huge egos and tiny consciences

The Other Golden Arches

The Other Golden Arches

Ancient Rome had its magnificent arches, which you'll see copied a lot in modern Vegas. Those of you who know your World Civ will surely remember that Rome eventually collapsed under the weight of its own decadence. Could we apply the term "decadent" to Las Vegas? Depends on who you ask. All the fast food workers in Vegas would say, "What's so decadent about fast food? It's just the American lifestyle to save time by not having to cook yourself", while the mostly short-ish people handing out GIRLS DIRECT TO YOU flyers, publications and trading cards on the Vegas Strip are all Peruvian and wouldn't understand the English word "decadent" in the first place. After all, I once asked one of those Peruvians if the publication he was passing out was The Watchtower, and he appeared to not even get the joke. But, to get back on track, if there is in fact a parallel between ancient Rome and modern America, beyond Vegas even, then I'm sure the Romans would have envied us for our credit cards, while we would have envied them for their domestic (and other types of) slaves. Let us not forget that the USA built its initial mega-wealth in sugar, cotton and tobacco largely through the use of slaves. Keep labor costs to a minimum and you can maximize profits. If you think working at McDonalds for low wages is hard, try working for no wages except a shack to live in and some variation of gruel for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, the slave owners lived and ate considerably better. The South, center of the slave activity, used to be far richer than the North, until the Civil War when the North trashed the South and somehow ended up with all its money. After all, we're truly a liberal, God-fearing nation at heart, so we abolished slavery, and even left the South in ruins just for being un-American, i.e. slave owners. Never mind that they basically set the American economy in motion. As Honore de Balzac so aply put it, "Behind every fortune is a crime." Nowaways, the only slavery that exists is our slavery to credit cards and fast food. Some could also be said to be enslaved to gambling, which is really decadent. Darn, there's that Rome parallel again. So are you free or are you a slave? is carrying a big debt around with you really that different from carrying a ball and chain? Ok, it is cleaner at least, but you still don't really own your own life. What great progress western civilization has made in 2000 years. Ancient Rome... Modern USA...IT'S ALL CONNECTED!!! I say, bring on the Star Wars era already (unless some other planet further along in the evolutionary process wants to make us all slaves, or even worse, make us their snack). We need to explore new worlds where we can be missionaries spreading the gospel of credit cards, fast food, and gambling.

Sand Cove

Sand Cove

After 12 hours of photography the day before, we decided instead of pitching the tent, we'd just sleep in the Honda Element overnight at Peninsula State Park and head over to Sand Cove for sunrise. Unfortunately the phone which we were using as an alarm clock decided it wanted a lay in, the battery died! We had planned to wake at 4.45am to get to Sand Cove for sunrise, instead we got up at 5.45am and where on the road by 5.50am! After a hasty drive from Peninsula State Park over to newport State Park, we hoofed it through the dark woods to Sand Cove. We knew where to go as we'd been here in May so following the path in a pretty dark wood wasn't too bad. By 6.40am we were in position for sunrise just after 7am.

Unfortunately there were no clouds in the sky, so sunrise was fast, but the nice thing about Sand Cove/Duck Bay; which this in on the edge of, are these rocky outcrops. They allowed us to shoot back into the trees which still had some fall color, and a cloud even appeared for us.

To be honest of the trip it was this shot that I was waiting to import from the card. Often images that look good on the LCD turn out crap and visa versa on the big screen. This looked good on the LCD and I figured there would be no issue with the scene on the large screen, other than unless I screwed up the exposure, focusing, polarization, ND Grad etc. Luckily I was good on all fronts, the image only needed sharpening and dust spots cleaning up, nothing more.

I should give some credit to Mark Baldwin who I was shooting with and had made the trip to Door County with me, as he found the shoot spot first on this one, nice one Mark, I need one of your custom made frames now!

Shotgun Training

Shotgun Training

Before we left for the field we had to be sure that we were able to use shotguns.
Even though we had signed up for this months in advance the rangers in Denali had brushed us aside and forgotten that we needed this course until almost the last minute.

The training consisted of a demonstration and then a run-through of how to disassemble and clean the shotgun, then also the target shooting where you must cluster 5 rounds (only 4 fit into the shotgun) in under a minute and a half somewhere in the silhouette.
We all easily passed at this distance.

Dan, the instructor later showed us how to use bear spray. His demonstration included showing us how to discharge the spray, which he did into the wind.
The result was him coughing incessantly and a runny nose.
It was a good demonstration. I will not be doing that.

January 24, 2010
I've never been very good at keeping my bathroom tidy. It's always the last place I clean. Every now and again there seems to be little gremlin that starts taunting me and when it gets that bad I have to bring out the big guns.

I only brought home one flash unit this weekend so I was forced to get creative in where I place that light. I should have taken a photo of my set up in the bathroom, it was quite complicated and our bathroom is not big to begin with.

The digital enhancement only added to my title "the lightning's hand" in that it made my hand glow. Can you hear the "watchooo" (cracking whip sound)? The gremlin did surrender after this shot. He could only take about a dozen shots of Mr. Clean and he was down the drain.

Ch? Ph?ng (Phoenix Roll)

Ch? Ph?ng (Phoenix Roll)

Ch? Ph?ng (Phoenix Roll)

Traditionally this dish was only served to the royal family. Over the years it made its way into menus for formal events such as weddings and new years. There is really nothing special about the ingredients, what make this dish standout from the rest is the food arrangement to creation an image of the mystical phoenix.

For the Phoenix Rolls (Main Part of the Dish):
-1lb shrimp
-4 cloves garlic
-3 tbs fish sauce
-1 tbs tapioca starch
-1/2 tsp pepper
-pinch of salt and sugar
-2 green onions
-3 eggs
-1/2 tsp oil

What to Do:
Pell and clean shrimp. Put everything except the eggs in a food processor and process into a smooth paste. Beat the eggs with the oil. Using a non-stick pan add a few tablespoons (amount depends on size of your pan) of egg mixture, tilt and swirl the pan to create a thin sheet (like making crepes). Cook the eggs completely, remove and repeat the process until all of the eggs are used up. Divide the shrimp paste to equal the number of egg wrappers created. Spread on portion of the shrimp paste onto on of the egg wrappers. Roll as you would a Swiss roll and steam the phoenix rolls for about 15 mins or until done.

For the Phoenix (Garnish):
-1 tomato or apple
-daikon radish, and carrots
-1 tbs vinegar
-3 tbs water
-1 tsp sugar
-1 Thai chili
-2 toothpicks
-creativity ;)

What to Do:
Cut carrots and daikon into thin long strips, mix with sugar, vinegar and water (can add food coloring too). Marinate until the veggies are wilted, then drain and squeeze out excess juices. To create the phoenix, cut the tomato in half then slice into the tomato at an angle, evenly at both sides so the cuts meet at the center and create V shaped layers that stack on top of each other. Lightly push the layers back a little to create the body. Cut a slice off of the other tomato half remove the seeds, this will be the bird’s neck/head. Make a small slice on one of the ends and bend the tomato flesh slightly to create a beak. Using tooth pick ends, pin on eyes (carrots) and a chili on top to give the head some “character”. Pin the “neck” into the center of the body. Cut the remaining tomato into 2 slices, these slices will be the wings of the phoenix, carve whatever designs in them as you please. Arrange the wings to the left and right of the neck to create a bird.

Cut the phoenix rolls diagonally into thin slices. Arrange the slices behind the bird to make its tail. Arrange the daikon and carrot slices marinated earlier in vinegar around the tail and body of the bird to represent the phoenix’s elegant feathers.

Gumboots, hoses and frothing, scalding buckets of hot caustic soda is how we used to clean up at work. Real manly cleaning; the type that could put you in hospital with chemical burns.

I noticed an annoying speck in the viewfinder and for a while all attempts to remove it (from the fresnel zones of the prism, inside the body) just moved it around from one place to another. These dainty cleaning tools did little but annoy me.

The Outcast – Stray Dogs and Paper Walls

The Outcast – Stray Dogs and Paper Walls

His right hand reaching out. Fingers not quite open. Left hand holding handkerchiefs, head down but searching. Like a stray dog running away from a place he has been chased. On his right side an empty bottle, above him chains and lock on a door where he cannot enter to find selter. And a hat for those who are in hurry and want to throw money. He does not quite beg for he does not look at the pedestrians, he does not plead for mercy, nor money. As being ashamed of his position. The Outcast.

They say that begging is a hard job and not all beggars make money. Beggars become organized, they work for other people who take advantage of them, collect their money and they only take a share. These beggars know the rules of how to sell their position. They show off somehow their misery. They know what can attract the attention of a pedestrian, they know that for many a hand reaching is not enough. There are other instruments more effective on this “job”.

Selling a small token gives the opportunity to the consumer – filanthropist to escape his thought that I am throwing away my money. He can then give money. A small child besides a mother also is a helpful tool. Playing an instrument not as a musician should but as someone who does not know how to play but still he has no other choice but to play, can also create a feeling of pity. Others do not need to buy anything to feel the need to give to beggars.

It is as if beggars exist for fulfilling the need for someone to feel superior and understanding, to feel a bit of shame and become a bit shocked. As if there is a need for that. In order to keep a sense of humanity alive. Beggars are a chance to feel human. In order to keep living in a pressing environment that creates beggars. The role of a beggar, in this sense, is similar to that of an artist who becomes the object of art. For the artist – beggar, it is the only way he can survive. For the citizen – consumer, watching a beggar is an instrument to find a deep hidden sense of humanity but also to appreciate his current position.

I spoke to him. He looked at me but did not reply. I asked him if he had shelter, he reached to give me handkerchiefs and escaped my pervasive look. This man was trying to hide. This man was not accustomed to begging.

After the official declaration of financial crisis in Greece, soon enough many streets were filled with beggars. All kinds of beggars. Mothers with their newborn children. Children playing music, disabled people, long term drug addicts, old ladies. But also people who clean your car windshield, or help you park your car. As if the crisis opened the doors of a new world which up to that point only periodically made evident its existence. New people add up to this new world every day. Their population seems to grow as time passes.

All this happened quite fast. As if there was already a plan in action and there were other people who knew that there might be a chance to make money from the occasion. Now, it is evident that there are organized systems of beggar trafficking. In these times of crisis, citizens seem to be more understanding and even with less money on their pockets, they are more willing to give. This is still capitalism.

The Outcast is no longer on the street I used to find him. Instead, they covered the deserted building with a huge “cloth”. This cloth was an advertisement of a healthy man, strong, confident and selfish – a survivor - entering a big store to buy an expensive watch. A wall to hide a deserted building and a deserted man. A cloth wall to protect a “healthy” society from the reality that is more and more evident. To “stop” an intrusion that seems inevitable.

Just like the wall that the greek government decided to built on the frontiers of Evros region to stop refugees from entering the country. A society that does not find solutions but hides behind false walls. An endangered existence. That chooses to become cannibalistic to its people instead of changing. We just keep on living our lives and beggars are useful as long as they help us do so. This, we call tolerant: As long as.

If not, we built walls. Walls that if we decide, we could - just with the move of one right hand - make them fall down. And we hide. Just like the outcast who was ashamed. His right hand reaching, his fingers not quite open. Stray dogs. Scared. Not his choice to beg.

This is a story of the reality of a man who since that moment I have not seen him anywhere on the streets again.. A man who seemed like an outcast even from the society of beggars. This is a story about the collective reality in Greece. My reality also. Stray dogs and paper walls. Walls fall.

BE SAFE

BE SAFE

one of those fucking awful black days when nothing is pleasing and everything that happens is an excuse for anger
an outlet for emotions stockpiled
an arsenal
an armor
these are the days when I hate the world
hate the rich
hate the happy
hate the complacent
the tv watchers, beer drinkers, the satisfied ones
because I know I can be all those little hateful things and then I hate myself for realizing that
there is no preventative, directive, or safe approach for living
we each know our own faith
we know from our youth how to be treated and how we'll be received and how we shall end
these things don't change
you can change your clothes, change your hairstyle, your friends, cities, continents
but sooner or later your old self will always catch up
always it waits in the wings

Ideas swirl but don't stick.
They appear but then run off like rain on the windshield.

one of those rainy day car rides
my head imploded
the atmosphere in this car a mirror of my skull
wet, damp, windows dripping and misted with cold
walls of gray
nothing good on the radio
not a thought in my head

be safe
I know a place we can go where you'll fall in love so hard that you'll wish you were dead

let's take life and slow it down incredibly slow
frame by frame
like two minutes that take ten years to live out
yeah, let's do that

telephone poles like praying mantis against the sky
metal arms outstretched
so much land traveled, so little sense made of it
it doesn't mean a thing all this land laying out behind us
I'd like to take off into these woods and get good and lost for a while
I'm disgusted with petty concerns - parking tickets, breakfast specials
does someone just have to carry this weight?
abstract topography
methane covenant
linear gospel
Ashville saleslady
stagian emmisary
torturous lice
mad Elizabeth

(keep a better peoples)

the light within me shines like a diamond mine
like an unarmed walrus
like a dead man face down on the highway
like a snake eating its own tail

the movie unpeeling, unreeling, about to begin

I've seen your hallway
you're a dark hallway
I hear your stairs creak
I can fix my mind on your yes and your no
I'll feel your face today in the sparkling canal
all red, yellow, blue-green brilliance and silver Dutch reflection
racing thoughts
racing thoughts all too real
you're moving so fast now I can't hold your image
this image I have of your face by the window
me standing beside you
arm on your shoulder
a catalog of images, flashing glimpses
then dawn again
untethered to this post you've sunk in me
every clear afternoon now I'll think of you up in the air
twisting your heel and your knees up around me
my face in your hair
you scream so well
your smile so loud
still rings in my ears

inhibition
distant tied-up longing
clean my teeth
stay the course
hold the wheel
steer on to freedom
open all the boxes
open all the boxes
open all the boxes
open all the boxes

Times Square mid-day
newspaper buildings
news headlines going around
we watch as they go and hope for some good ones
Those tree shadows in the park they're all whistling chasing leaves.
Around six pm shadows across the cobblestones
girl in front of bathroom mirror
she's slow and careful
paints her face green, mask-like
like Matisse
Portrait with Green Stripe
long shot through apartment window
a monologue on top but no girl in shot

the light within me shines like a diamond mine
like an unarmed walrus
like a dead man face down on the highway
like a snake eating its own tail

That was great
Yeah? Mine were alright. Wasn't my best one but who cares?
That's the spirit...

Make your home a nest.

Make your home a nest.
Check out my bird nest! I created it with free form sewing using bits of this and that. (Always save those wonderful little scraps of ribbons ,tulle, lace, ravels etc!) I keep a sack by my sewing machine and put all my scraps in it to re-purpose in to a fun piece!)
I used a piece of muslin underneath and machine sewed the pieces randomly in a
circular pattern.
I then switched to hand sewing and added a fabric transfer bird and sewed some more
strings, threads, and fibers around her. I further embellished the nest with
beads, buttons, and little nature items such as twigs and mosses.
I think I will put her on an art quilt piece soon as I find all the right things
to go with her!

Your my rock

Your my rock

This was a difficult shot to get,i wanted these to weed covered rocks being the biggest in this area, the problem was getting low enough to capture them and have a nice colourful sky as a backdrop. I then set my tripod to it`s lowest hieght and kneeled in the weed to frame it up .I set F4 and adjusted my focus points on the rocks so as to throw off the surrounding area . I considered a tight crop on the two rocks which would be nice but i love my colourful skies , so there it is it`s what I like.

LEYTON ALLOTMENT SOCIETY. ESTABLISHED 1843

During the early 1800's it was the prospect of breathing fresh clean air and living in a tranquil countryside of rich green marshland interspaced with neatly worked farms that attracted and increasing number of established gentlemen from the crime ridden and stinking streets of the London capital to the peaceful suburbs of Low Leyton. The parish was already rich in history, having been fought over and settled by ancient British tribes, one of which had left a large fortification in the area that is now Drapers Road Playing Fields which could still be seen in Victorian times before the outward flowing urban sprawl engulfed, eroded and finally hid it from view. That great general Julius Caesar had forded the nearby River Lea, a massive river in his day, and force marched his troops and cavalry through the area in a surprise move overnight in order to gain a tactical advantage against the British tribes of Ilford. Later not only did the vengeful chariots of Boadicea cut a murderous path through the local farmland but a great villa standing where Leyton Grange is today was burnt down. King Alfred drained and then reflooded the Leyton marshland, using waterways that can still be seen at the Auckland Road site so saving the land and its people from Danish domination. King Harold and his retinue used to pass regularly through the area using what is the High Road today when he travelled from London to his power base at Waltham. He could easily practised one of his fighting manoeuvres, the Shield Wall, on the small bluff that would have risen from the soggy marshland that is now the Oliver Road site.
The agonies of the Civil War and the Reformation had long faded when the gentlemen of commerce followed the laudable example set by many noted churchmen who were resident in Low Leyton and began building their ample houses mainly along the present High Street. It was of course obligatory for these gentlemen to have many servants and it was from this servant population that the first allotment society was formed.
An area of land known locally as the oasis which surrounded a natural water hole called Jesus Christ's Tankard and now contained within the Oliver Road Site was bought for the servants from money left over from rebuilding a local chapel. The original title of the society was The Association of Low Leyton Allotment Holders and was the clever invention of a young Muslim boy brought to this country by his master, a very high ranking official in the East India Company. Forced to live as a christian the young boy, who was named Arif, kept his own faith in the best way he could. Once the name of the society was accepted he volunteered to inscribe all of the society's implements with the initials of the society which spelt A.L.L.A.H., this he did most faithfully but its significance was lost on his christian brothers.
Religion and war played a major part in the lives of our founders and the first horticultural competitions arose from the church. At Easter a special service was held at the local church at which all the head cooks of the various households brought a basket containing a selection of Easter biscuits, hot cross buns, gingerbread men and a jar of chutney. The cook who made the best jar of chutney was awarded a small silver salver donated by Arif's master, called the East Indian Salver. At the end of the season there was another service, Thanksgiving, at which each household placed of allotment vegetables on the church steps. The best one was selected by the vicar and the Laprimaudaye was awarded to the winner. Laprimaudaye was the name of one of the original vicars of the church. Also at this service the young under-maids had to present a sampler for inspection by the vicar's wife and the girl with the best piece was awarded with the Hester Strype Bible, Hester Strype being the daughter of an earlier vicar of note, John Strype.
By the mid 1850's the church's sway on the society was waning as a wider range of people began to use the allotments. As a result of spoils brought back from the Crimean War the bibles were replaced by trophies name the Sebastopol Vase and the Florence Nightingale Thimble.
The next major change in the society was due to the Boer War where local men made battle friendships with comrades from adjoning boroughs and kept them after cessations by asking that the name of their society be changed to The Leyton and District Allotment Holders Society so as to incorporate fellow East Londoners.
The First World War changed the social side of the society and our society led the way in allowing a woman to hire an allotment in her own right, have a vote at the A.G.M. and become a committee member.
During the Second World War the society maintained 900 plots and still kept its proud tradition of having a horticultural show. During the war the shows were held outdoors and it is related how during a bombing raid all the heads of the ch

Dormant Long Under: Chapter 1: Part 3: And so it begins....

Ignoring the exclemations of acerbity that rose up from the crowd of aliens and humans alike, I shoved my way through the thick crowd, slowly unfastening my holster to ready the Hera Semta K7-2 heavy pistol. Contrary to the usual lack of accuracy in the model, the K7 series rose over these problems, maintaning power and accuracy. Now, the only problem was the battery port may melt when under too much stress; I winced at my permenant burn mark which was a result of the problem. Burns from something as intense as a UWCS Battery cooler ranged from ranged from fourth degree to sixth, and only that. Mine happened to be five; a large permenant scar was left on my forearm as a result.
Shrugging off these thoughts, I threw myself up a market stand leading to the catwalks above, as the chembian shop owner swore loudly. Ignoring the reptillian figure, I glanced backwards to Harkin; who, at my nod, kept running on my flank. After a quick minute of navigating through technical quarters above the factory district, a metal door careened into my vision, stopping me dead. The holographic interface demanded proper code authorization, which I lacked. With a quick remark in a foul tongue that an enthor would have cuffed me for, I rapped on the door twice, impatient.
As the metal frame screeched open, a human worker stammered out, an agitated look displayed on his greasy features.
"This area is restricted, as is this level. Please, leave!"
I briefly considered using my rank, but shook the thought off. Officialy, I was just aesthetic now, bearing no authority till the council declares otherwise.
"Erm..I'm from...galactic, custodian services...I've been told to clean up this area."
The man shook his head. "The janitor was a reegur a day ago! You think me stupid?"
I rubbed the back of my neck, thinking quickly. "He caught the cold." I almost swore when I remembered Reegur don't catch the cold.
The man hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, whatever. Just don't breathe a word of it to Merka. Damn enthor's got a pole up his...."
His voice faded as he walked off, and with a sigh, I broke off again, desperately hoping I wasn't too late. My worries were soon justified; two Xembact troopers were edging around the crates, slowly lining up their shots on a familiar reegur, who was angrily growling at a chembian stock keeper. Glancing around, I saw Harkin doing the same on the Xembact; eventually sliding out of his makeshift cover and cleaving a shot through one's skull. His thorian partner gasped, but his frantic whimper was cut short by a repeated shot, this time flaring from my own weapon. He clutched his neck, choking, then fell backward, disappearing into the piles of cargo.
Rosk, his own weapon drawn, scanned the affair before him, but lowered it when I came into view, Harkin following suit.
"Elijah Wilson," He said, leaning back to seat himself on a small crate. "Hero of Shiro Kirrva, son of Councillor Joseph Wilson. It's an honor." He leaned his head forward, in a reegur symbol of respect. I nodded, and we shook hands quickly.
"It's been to long, old friend." I said, leaning my head to the side. Reegur took this as a sign of acknowledgement, apparently.
"Indeed it has," he rose his arm slowly, revealing a mechanical prosthetic replacing his left forearm. "The time hasn't treated me well."
Before we could exchange any more conversation, Harkin cut in. "Wilson, we need to talk. Is our deal done?" I nodded in reply.
"Now, you tell me what's going on, and how I can help."
He paced back and forth slowly, clearing his throat. "Wilson, this is no small matter. I assume you've heard of the attack on Ark station?" I nodded again.
"A few news flashes, yes."
"This attack..was more than just a small terrorist attack. The invading force was the size of half our fleet; while ours just so happened to be halved. The attackers must be an official military force, like a species branch in the GCIR."
Rosk cut in, obviously knowing more about the matter. "That's why I was here; I was to investigate a possible lead in this cargo, a package that may hint at the race that lead the attack. No luck."
Harkin sighed. "Wilson, the council has assigned me with investigating, and reforming the old crew. You were the first on the list."
I knew what he was going to ask, and he did too. He just left us with a hesitant silence, till I answered, with a sigh. "I'd rather be out there then in here. Come on."

Clean Water [1]

Clean Water [1]

#1 I am extremely thankful for having clean water. Now a days lots of folks in the US take it for granted being able to turn on a faucet and have clean water to drink and bathe in. CLEAN WATER you are AWESOME!

[SHORT STORY] -----> There are so many things we take for granted but are awesome in our lives. I decided to create another project showing all of the things I'm thankful for in the year 2011. I hope I keep this up.

[LONG STORY] -----> I was actually born in a "3rd world country" Cameroon, in the West Coast of Africa and I came to the US when I was 11 years old. I was the kind of person who always appreciated the small stuff, like having lunch at the cafeteria at school, while the other kids complained about it. I enjoyed seeing the diversity of kids since I only saw people who looked like me. I have an American mother so I knew of the great things this country offered. But in the same vein having an African father grounded me to the realities of this world. This project is an attempt to get back to those days. I don't want to let cable TV dictate how awful life is, when in reality we all have far more than others do in other parts of the world. Yet with far less, many people still find ways to be happy.

Water in all it's forms: gas, liquid, solid

Water in all it's forms: gas, liquid, solid

Snowy December in Boulder, Colorado.

The power plant in Boulder with the front range in the background. That's water vapor rising off the lake. Don't worry, the stuff coming out of the smokestack is mostly water vapor, too.

While we're on the topic, did you know that the famous environmental act actually worsened the pollution from coal fired plants? How? Well the coal from the eastern US is very dirty. The coal from the west is much cleaner but more expensive. Senator Robert Byrd needed to preserve jobs in his coal producing state and keep the support of the labor unions. So they managed to write into law that all coal fired plants have scrubbers. Extremely expensive scrubbers. So those coal fired plants that used western coal had to put scrubbers on theri plants. Then they decided to no longer pay for the expensive western coal since the scrubbers brought them into environmental compliance. However, burning the cleaner western coal without scrubbers is ans was still cleaner than burning eastern coal with scrubbers. BTW, environmental groups cheered this bill.

The government should have regulated the output, not the method. Be very careful of good intentions.

Nature's Most Amazing Events

Nature's Most Amazing Events

Witness the planet's most breathtaking natural events, and follow the dramatic wildlife stories behind them. Combining the epic cinematography of Planet Earth, with all the emotion, intimacy and storytelling of a wildlife diary, this series charts the effects of global climatic phenomena which transform entire landscapes, drawing in thousands of animals and determining their fate. Each episode is set in a different part of the world - from the great flood of the Okavango delta to the plankton blooms of the Pacific Ocean, and from the Indian monsoon to the race for survival triggered by the annual Arctic melt - and shows how immense natural forces, often starting thousands of miles away, drive a chain reaction that culminates in a spectacular wildlife event. For some animals, it's a window of opportunity, but for others, it's the most dangerous time of their lives. Follow their emotional, involving stories to a dramatic climax where their fate will be revealed. Episodes: The Great Melt, The Great Salmon Run, The Great Migration, The Great Tide, The Great Flood, The Great Feast.

Nature's Most Amazing Events takes up the mantle left by the stunning BBC series Planet Earth, and offers a closer look at some of the most fascinating and dramatic natural happenings on the planet. Narrated by David Attenborough, it digs in some detail into the impact of certain events on nature, and manages to hone in on small stories in the midst of major happenings. It's a breathtaking cocktail. What particularly lifts Nature's Most Amazing Events too is the stunning photography. Many will recall just how superb the shots in Planet Earth were, but if anything, Nature's Most Amazing Events tops it. The cinematography here is world-class, and it greatly enhances the series around it as a result. That said, there's more than enough substance to Nature's Most Amazing Events as it stands anyway. Diligently made and researched, and presented in an accessible, yet not condescending manner, it's another major success for the BBC in this area, and further cements why it's a world leader where natural-history documentaries are concerned. Credit must go too for the decision to include the making-of material. Back when the BBC broadcast The Blue Planet, this material was often just as interesting as the main feature itself, and the same is true here. It's a genuinely fascinating insight into the production of such an ambitious, and unmissable, series. --Jon Foster

Nice weather so time to hit the roads :-)

Canon 1000D with Canon 17-85 IS USM

Shot made at the 14th of July, handheld, speed 1/15th, aperture 5.6, 800 iso (!)

Story of my new Secondhand bike, starting at the 1st of June

Okay, it didn't look like this, this bike stood still for 5 years at my neighbors and they wanted to throw it away, I asked if I could have it....

Problems, dirty (duh) chain rusted, brakes gone, the saddle leaks so everytime you sit on it you get wet, water seems to be in the saddle....

Done sofar (1st/2nd of june) cleaned it, chain freed and working (thank you Caramba) bought two mudguards (9 euros total) put on my saddle of my old bike, put on the stand of my old bike. Freed up some gears (4 of the 18).

Still to do, repair front brake, put in different saddlepin (my old bikes pin is nicer) buy a LOCK and adjust the gears. The saddlepin is Finally loose.... again thank you Caramba.....
a product that actually works and works well :-)

Update 3rd of June. Saddlepin switched with my old bike. Both brakes are shot, but 10 euros bought me two new handles, cables are surprisingly in good shape. So both brakes work now :-) Plus I now have 6 speeds freed up.

Also bought a bikelock (another 10 euros) for mountainbikes and head and tail lights (another 10 euros) also for mountainbikes.... (both are pretty much mandantory)

so now it has cost me 39 euros...... Still cheap :-)

Update 8th of june, it seems most of the speeds (12 or 14 out of the 18) are now working. Took it for a long drive (about an hour) to put it through it's pases..... way lighter than my old bike :-)

Update 14th of July, all speeds work, have to oil the pedals every once in a while though. My old bike computer broke.... so I bought the cheapest of the cheap, a Ventura X for only 6 euros. World of difference, this little bike computer is fantastic :-) Big display and it does what I want, speed, max speed, distance, trip time, trip distance, average speed, the lot, 6 euros well spent :-). I've been using my bike a lot lately, weather is too nice not too and it saves me a lot on fuel.
And more importantly.... it is very good for my health :-)

Update 25-7 MAKE THE SQUEAKING STOP!!!
Not thing is worse than a bike that squeaks with every push of the pedals.... First I thought it was my pedals, which offcourse wasn't the case, allthough they were loose. Then my saddle, which was also loose. Turns out that all parts were starting to loosen up. Which is nice, but not when your biking :-) Crank was loose, pedal arms loose, fastened them all. Oiled everything.

Still squeaks.... DANG!!! Long story short, oiled the main axel, turns out you can drop oil in there :-) So first run with nice teflon coated grease, then second run with oil, problem solved. Now all I hear is the nice buzzing sound of the tires.

jeff wall morning cleaning - Jeff Wall:

Jeff Wall: Complete Edition

Jeff Wall: Complete Edition

Jeff Wall (b.1946) adopts the nineteenth-century poet Baudelaire's famous description of one of his contemporaries as 'a painter of modern life' to describe his own very different work: huge transparencies mounted on to light boxes that diffuse a brilliant glow of white light evenly through his photographs of contemporary urban scenes and 'constructed' social situations. Wall is foremost among the pioneering artists who since the late 1960s have brought photography to the forefront of contemporary art. His constructed images employ the latest sophisticated technology in the creation of compelling tableaux, which are evocative of subjects ranging from Hollywood cinema to nineteenth-century history painting. When exhibited in their glowing light boxes they evoke both the seduction of the cinema screen and the physical presence of minimalist sculptures such as Dan Flavin's fluorescent light installations or Donald Judd's metal and Perspex wall reliefs. All of these elements - traditional figurative painting, cinema, Minimalism, Conceptual art, documentary photography - are consciously evoked and explored in Wall's work. Associated closely since the late 1960s with Conceptual artists such as Dan Graham, with whom he collaborated on The Children's Pavilion (1988-93), Wall has engaged at a sophisticated level with theories of representation and its social dimensions both as an artist and as a theoretical writer on contemporary art and culture. The survey by Thierry de Duve, author of "Pictorial Nominalism" and "The Definitively Unfinished Marcel Duchamp", proposes an alternative history of modernism. Critic and curator Arielle Pelenc talks with the artist on themes ranging from storytelling to cinematography. Boris Groys, author of "Contemporary Art from Moscow", focuses on the meaning of light in Wall's work. The update section by French art critic and historian of photograpy Jean-Francois Chevrier surveys Wall's work from 1995 to the present. The artist has chosen texts by Blasie Pascal and Franz Kafka for the "Artist's Choice", and the "Artist's Writings" celebrate Wall as an art historian and theorist by including key essays and important interviews.

Jeff Wall: Selected Essays and Interviews

Throughout his career, the influential art photographer Jeff Wall has written periodically on a variety of subjects--from the work of his Vancouver colleagues, to the art of such diverse figures as Edouard Manet, On Kawara, and Dan Graham, to the important role of photography in Conceptual art. Wall's own work takes center stage in the many interviews he has granted over the past two decades. Both the essays and the interviews are indispensable to the study of Wall's work, which will be the subject of a major American traveling retrospective, with stops in New York, Chicago and San Francisco, throughout 2007. Thanks to Wall's wide-ranging curiosity, nimble mind, and articulate voice, the texts are also of considerable interest outside of the context of his own oeuvre. This generous selection of 14 essays and 23 interviews from the past 25 years is the first collection of Wall's texts to be published in English, and as such, is an instant collector's item. This affordable volume also includes 120 black-and-white illustrations for reference purposes.

Street cleaner in Piccadilly Circus

Amongst the large amount of tourists on a typical overcast day, the people that keep the capital moving are often forgotten and taken for granted. A City of Westminster borough street cleaner with his brush and cart gets ready to move on after clearing rubbish left by tourists.

Street cleaner in Berlin

This street cleaner is sweeping the pavement. The columns in the back remain black and dirty. Finest German thoroughness. However, his orange coat gives a nice contrast to the green plants.
Seen somewhere near the museums in Berlin through my Leica R5 with Summilux-R 50.
