Rochester Sweeps Festival
This was taken by my daughter, she was quite taken with the skeletal claw on the top hat. This group of Morris Dancers is not what you find in the tourist traps of ye olde London, they appear to hark back to something quite pagan and something quite funereal.
The Sweeps' Festival was so-called because the Chimney Sweeps would celebrate the fact that winter was over and they would make a good trade cleaning chimneys.
The festival is brilliant, it is an authentic English festival.
We go every year.
Premium for ‘Cleansing Chimneys’, 1797
This premium invited submissions for a new method of cleaning chimneys, one that did not involve children. The Society had been concerned with the ‘miseries attending children who fall into the employment of common chimney sweeps’ for some years. Members of the Society, such as the merchant and philanthropist Jonas Hanway, had been involved in campaigning to highlight the plight of such boys, although the Society did not find any suitable submissions for the premium until the early part of the next century.
