(17) Blue Rug Juniper from the front I bought this Blue Rug Juniper at Stop & Shop last May. It was scrunched horizontally into a 2-gallon pot (hence the great curves), and I replanted it as an upright with the help of the Greater Hartford Bonsai Society. This May, I shaped it and wired it (again with help from the Great Hartford Bonsai Society), and now I'm trying to learn to effectively manage the foliage. It lost about 2/3 of it's folidage, but no roots, so it's growing well, especially after the move to our new apartment where it gets much more sun. I plant to reduce the roots this fall, and cut the training pot to about half the current depth. By next spring, I hope to have an appropriate pot for it (probably a medium-depth earthy oval) so I can work the roots and make it a real bonsai. Buy My Rug! From Mandalay, I took a boat to Bagan. I remembered the boat broke down. These Burmese are trying to sell the rugs to the tourists on board the ship. They throw the rugs on board the ship, and the tourists scrutinized them and offer a price. Money is thrown down to them if the offer goes through. P.S: Another scanned pic from Myanmar trip 2001. Weaving China's Past: The Amy S. Clague Collection of Chinese Textiles Western admiration of China's silk textiles dates back at least to the days of the Roman empire. The establishment of the Chinese republic caused a large number of imperial costumes, no longer needed for court ritual, to enter collectors' hands. Textiles curators have studied these in depth, yet American museums are just begining to explore the broader topic of Chinese textiles, and to present splendid examples of the art along with porcelains, bronzes, enamels, and other decorative art traditions of China. This work examines an extraordinary private collection of Chinese textiles of diverse styles, functions, and techniques. The collection is remarkable for its chronological expanse, with works ranging in date from the Song (960-1279) and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties through the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The book examines the relationship of these textiles to the greater fabric of Chinese art. Pieces in the collection have been subjected to microscopic examination and radiocarbon dating as well as full examination by a textiles conservator, and the results of these studies are included. The yarn type, thread count, weave, and supplementary materials are identified. Several of the brocades feature gold fibers, and these have been analyzed to identify specific techniques. A remarkable discovery was the use of peacock feathers twisted with silk fibers in a kesi woven during the Qing dynasty. The study of Chinese silk textiles, like the study of Chinese ceramics and metalwork, offers a glimpse into a complex tradition in which both organized industry and individual creativity played a role. Traditional China viewed spinning, weaving, and embroidery as divinely inspired arts to be practiced dutifully in the home. Concurrently, however, luxury textiles were commissioned for religious, state, and private use. Silk was essential in China's foreign policy, used along with gifts of tea and silver to pacify borderlands. Together with porcelain, silk became a major commodity for export to Europe. Elaborate techniques were developed for producing complex designs in both brocade and embroidery. During China's later dynasties, textile arts were pursued as fine arts, appreciated on equal footing with painting and calligraphy. Dreyfuss has commissioned French artist Julien Gardair to create a special installation inspired by the same Palm Springs, Calif., vibe as his summer collection of carryalls. Gardair can be seen masking black tape on the store’s tiled white walls, and once it’s finished, the piece will remain up through September. Dreyfuss has wanted to embark on such a collaboration ever since laying eyes on the former Waterworks location. “When I first saw the store, I thought, Oh that is going to be a great place to make an exhibition. I’m not a gallerist, I don’t know anything about art, I just like it very much,” says Dreyfuss, who always makes the rounds in Chelsea when he visits New York. “[Designers] always have to make new pieces, new pieces and we never have time to sit and think about art. This gives me the opportunity to express myself with my friends.” Gardair has proved an ideal partner. Born in Versailles, France, and raised in the suburbs of Paris and Montpellier, France, he obsessively collected contemporary art magazines he bought at the flea market as a teenager and catalogued them at home. “I guess I was kind of cuckoo,” he says with a grin. Gardair earned an MFA from the Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Arts Paris-Cergy and has been Brooklyn, N.Y.-based for the past two-and-a-half years, where he works in as many as five mediums in one day, ranging from delicate ink and stamp drawings (a selection is on display at the Martos Gallery) to large-scale cutout felt installations. Dreyfuss, who first met Gardair a year ago through his artist friend Caroline Rennequin, connects with the 33-year-old’s unconventional approach. “I think it’s very interesting when young artists don’t have money to express themselves. Then they have to find ways to be able to say what they want to say…using materials you don’t use normally for art,” he says. Indeed, armed simply with rolls of black tape, Gardair is using the Broome Street store’s tiles as a kind of grid to give structure to his otherwise fluid, free-form mural. “I give myself very strict rules and try to find freedom inside of them,” explains Gardair. As for how his final result will mesh with Dreyfuss’ designs, Gardair sees them as a natural pair (his cutouts already have inspired Dreyfuss’ upcoming fall collection). “I don’t have to push anything very much to find the connection with the brand. [His bags] look so simple, and at the same time, they are so exclusive. I guess I’m the same because I use tape or bleach or cardboard or really bad carpet and try to make the best out of it. But he’s working with good material,” muses Gardair, who has been using Dreyfuss’ shopping totes to carry his tools. “They’re a bit tight for my shoulder. Does anyone know the scientific (botanical) name for this plant? 5/9/09 Note: I finally discovered this species in my new groundcover book entitled "Covering Ground" by Barbara W. Ellis. The species is Rubus pentalobus or R. rolfei 'Emerald Carpet'. Common names include Creeping Raspberry and Creeping Bramble along with Strawberry Vine mentioned by the horticulturist at the Select Seeds greenhouse. It can easily cover a 5 foot wide area and grows 3-4" tall. It has a small insignificant white flower in summer that is followed by red fruit (no information if it is edible). Zones 6-8 Brownlands: Acer pseudoplatanus + Parthenocissus inserta + Clematis vitalba + Rubus caesius (48°08' N 16°27' E) 2011-10-16 Vienna XI. district, a most ugly stretch of land between road and railroad (170 msm Quadrant 7864/4). On the right hand side and in the background some Acer pseudoplatanus, already beginning to change to autumn colours, and the red leaves mixed in everywhere are those of Parthenocissus inserta. Further, there's Clematis vitalba in abundance, with leaves still green but with their pretty fruit sticking out. Rubus caesius also is present there in considerable numbers, its leaves however do not stick out here at all. In the Beginning... ...there was this carpet on the first floor and stairs of our house. Shortly after we moved in, we removed the carpet from the three rooms it covered, but left the stairs alone for some reason (laziness and not wanting to deal with carpet staples for a long time). Now that our cat likes to puke a lot, the carpet was getting stained and reeked despite our best efforts to keep it clean and heave-free. This morning, on a whim, I ripped up a corner on the bottom stair and before we had a chance to talk ourselves out of it, Brian and I went to town on this filthy wrecked carpet. what lay under the carpet White stuff on the floor seems to be some sort of filler. My guess is the floor warped and bowed so they took out a board and filled in. We hired someone to do the floor here and refinish the stairs while we were on vacation this summer. We came home and the board was replaced, the bad removed and floor is now v. nice.
