Day 212: Beauty Dish Test

Well two year olds are not the ideal models for very specific set shots...I knew this and yet still I tired ;) This wasn't the best shot of the day but the best one that showed off the new equipment...compromises.

Camera Data
The setting sun is behind Aiden and he is staring directly into the dish set up on a light stand. The catch light in his eyes was pretty good even though he is squinting a good bit in this shot. I also liked light wrap around effect of the dish... definitely worth the $6 and several hours of labor to create. The camera data can be found below.

Christopher and I did a small shoot with Michon at the Kincaid Dunes in June 2011. Michon is one lass I doubt I would ever tire of shooting with - she is extremely intelligent, creative, focused, drop dead gorgeous and she puts up with us - what else could you ask from a model?

We did this shoot mainly to get practice with using Strobist flash on a sunny day and I like the results. I used a Canon 580EX II and Vivitar 285HV, triggered by Cybersync equipment. It was tough at first getting the lighting I wanted but once I did I thought the shots turned out fine - of course Michon is a beautiful lass under any lighting!

Playground

In Dongdan park there's a "playground" filled with adult-sized equipment for people to keep fit.
I met an old couple using this back exerciser and they insisted I give it a try. I was surprised how much effort it took to lift the bar.
On the other end of the park, they were giving free hearing tests and other kinds of checkups, I suppose as a service of the two hospitals that overlook the park, Beijing Hospital and Tongren Hospital.

The text of the Indo-Sri Lanka Agreement, 1987

The President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Mr. J.R. Jayawardene, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, His Excellency Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, having met at Colombo on July 29, 1987.

Attaching utmost importance to nurturing, intensifying and strengthening the traditional friendship of Sri Lanka and India, and acknowledging the imperative need of resolving the ethnic problem of Sri Lanka, and the consequent violence, and for the safety, well being, and prosperity of people belonging to all communities in Sri Lanka.

Have this day entered into the following agreement to fulfill this objective.

IN THIS CONTEXT,

1.1 Desiring to preserve the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka:

1.2 Acknowledging that Sri Lanka is a "multi-ethnic and a multi-lingual plural society" consisting, inter alia, of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims (Moors) and Burghers:

1.3 Recognising that each ethnic group has a distinct cultural and linguistic identity which has to be carefully nurtured:

1.4 Also recognising that the Northern and the Eastern Provinces have been areas of historical habitation of Sri Lankan Tamil speaking peoples, who have at all times hitherto lived together in this territory with other ethnic groups:

1.5 Conscious of the necessity of strengthening the forces contributing to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka, and preserving its character as a multi ethnic, multi lingual and multi religious plural society in which all citizens can live in equality, safety and harmony, and prosper and fulfil their aspirations:

2. Resolve that

2.1 Since the government of Sri Lanka proposes to permit adjoining provinces to join to form one administrative unit and also by a referendum to separate as may be permitted to the Northern and Eastern Provinces as outlined below:

2.2 During the period, which shall be considered an interim period (i.e. from the date of the elections to the Provincial Council, as specified in para 2.B to the date of the referendum as specified in para 2.3) the Northern and Eastern Provinces as now constituted, will form one administrative unit, having one elected Provincial Council. Such a unit will have one Governor, one Chief Minister and one Board of Ministers.

2.3 There will be a referendum on or before 31st of December 1988 to enable the people of the Eastern Province to decide whether:

A) The Eastern Province should remain linked with the Northern Province as one administrative unit, and continue to be governed together with the Northern Province as specified in para 2.2 or:

B) The Eastern Province should constitute a separate administrative unit having its own distinct Provincial Council with a separate Governor, Chief Minister and Board of Ministers

The President may, at his discretion, decide to postpone such a referendum.

2.4 All persons who have been displaced due to ethnic violence or other reasons, will have the right to vote in such a referendum. Necessary conditions to enable them to return to areas from where they were displaced will be created.

2.5 The referendum when held will be monitored by a committee headed by the Chief Justice, a member appointed by the President, nominated by the Government of Sri Lanka, and a member appointed by the President, nominated by the representatives of the Tamil speaking people of the Eastern Province.

2.6 A simple majority will be sufficient to determine the result of the referendum.

2.7 Meetings and other forms of propaganda, permissible within the laws of the country, will be allowed before the referendum.

2.8 Elections to Provincial Councils will be held within the next three months, in any event before the 31st December 1987. Indian observers will be invited for elections to the Provincial Council in the North and East.

2.9 The Emergency will be lifted in the Eastern and Northern Provinces by August 15, 1987. A cessation of hostilities will come into effect all over the Island within 48 hours of the signing of this Agreement. All arms presently held by Militant Groups will be surrendered in accordance with an agreed procedure to authorities to be designated by the government of Sri Lanka.

Consequent to the cessation of hostilities and the surrender of arms by Militant Groups, the Army and other security personnel will be confined to barracks in camps as on 25th May 1987. The process of surrendering of arms and the confining of security personnel and moving back to barracks shall be completed within 72 hours of the cessation of hostilities coming into effect.

2.10 The government of Sri Lanka will utilise for the purpose of law enforcement and maintenance of security in the Northern and Eastern Provinces the same organisations and mechanisms of government as are used in the rest of the country.

2.11 The President of Sri Lanka will grant a general amnesty to political and other prisoners now held in

One of my favorite books is "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz.

The Four Agreements are:

1. Be Impeccable With Your Word
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don't Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don't Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Business Now and Then

At first I hated this shot, then I realized how cool it was from a historical standpoint (still don't like the shot).

The old Sheridan Press building, Centennial Theaters (still running) and the very new (not even a year old) Black Tooth Brewery. This brewery is a favorite place of mine (go figure). If you're ever in Sheridan check it out. Very similar to some of the micro breweries in Billings, MT where the dining/tasting area is in the same major room as the brew kettle and other equipment. You get to watch the brewmaster unobstructed!

MCMENAMINS ON THE COLUMBIA

Taken with my mobile phone after eating at the fabulous micro-brew pub, McMenamins up in Vancouver, WA. We were up there for a four-day weekend helping out my mother-in-law hook up some brand new computer and home theater equipment in her brand new home.

...I highly recommend the root beer on tap at the pub. Yum!

When I took this shot yesterday, I didn't realize the processing would develop in such an old-fashioned way. But some scenes are eternally peaceful, which is the way I feel when I think about my grandmother's spirit. We never spent any time together at the beach, but we did write to one another, especially when we found an inspiring postcard!

Please note this is only a "piece" of fencing that gets placed on different parts of the beach to help keep wind and sand from eroding parts of the beautiful seaside!

This reminds of the Simpsons episode where Agent Muller and Skully [from the X files!] came onto the show because they were investigating what they thought was an alien. It was actually Mr. Burns on drugs and he glowed. But I remember that episode used to scare me. And the music too! It was like, creepy. I can't believe I'm that much of a dork.
OH yesterday, funniest thing ever, I was telling my mom

The moment you've all been waiting for: story time.
Oh my Jesus. Today in my Intro to Graphic Arts class, we were working in Illustrator and making stickers and printing it in the print shop. We have this bad ass nice school so we have all new equipment. It's fucking awesome in there. So, we ganged all of our files and nested it or whatever they say, and we went into the print shop which is like...a room away but there's a pathway in the middle of the classroom so it's awesome. I go in there with Sonia because we put our file on the same flash drive and we hang out in there and watch the process of nesting and printing. THEN! M walks into the classroom. I look up because, well, he's as beautiful as a golden sunshine rising in the Italian lowlands. BAHAHA! Anyways, I watch him walk in and he's like asking everyone kind of but he totes looked at me when he asked "Hey, where's the flashdrive?!" Then I kinda looked in his direction and then looked at the table to where the USB was and then looked back at him but he had found it already and he totally reached in front of me and I got to smell how wonderful he smells. He smells like, ahh just wonderful. I don't remember it right now but if you gave me like 2 smells I could sniff out his. So he goes back to the normal room where we were working and then he puts his on the flashdrive then comes back into the room where Sonia and me were at. Then we stand around the computer while the other kids who knew how to work the program were doing stuff with the stickers and sending them to the printer. Sonia found some tape and kept messing with it and M was standing right next to her. You know how the IDs have a little plastic part in the back? Well, this kid sitting in front of us had his on the middle of his neck and it was like right in our faces. Sonia ripped a little piece of tape off and stuck it to that plastic part. Then M saw what she did and took it off and said "No." with this super serious face. Then he starts laughing and he's like "nahh I'm playing." Then he suggested to her that she should rip a piece off and write "I'm gay" on the piece of tape and stick it on his back. She tore off a piece of tape and gave it to him and he found a marker and wrote, instead "I'm Black" on the piece of tape. Don't worry, the kid they stuck it on is African American. So I was like laughing and pointing and laughing at it. Funniest part: My teacher looked at the tape on the back and she just laughed. That was so awesome. So the kid walks off proudly with his new sticker and then M also walks away with him to go watch the stickers print. OH! I forgot, this also happened before we put the tape on the kid.
Kid on the computer: Hey, Adriana!

Kid: What's your file named?
Adriana: Adriana
M: Hah! *mimicks me* Adriana!
Adriana: *giggles lightly and takes all of her might not say OMFG HE JUST MADE EYE CONTACT WITH ME AND TALKED TO ME AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!*
The way he said it, he was kinda making fun of me because the name was obvious. But I still cannot believe that he talked to me.
So then back to the kid we put the tape on went to go watch the stickers being printed and then left the chair that was infront of the computer open. So duhh I sat down. Sonia went into the next room because she wanted to talk to our friends in there and she was cool with the teacher. Hah his name is Mr. Walker and everyone says it with a country accent like "mistaa walka." It's funny. So while she was over there, I was sitting in the chair. And then guess who wanders back over to the computer area and gets behind while I'm in the chair? YEAH, IT WAS him. Lol so it's all like awkward and scary for me because the most beautiful man in all of the land [not really true] was behind me and probably leaning on my chair. I had my phone in my hand and I was texting Jennifer and she hadn't texted back so to look cool I resent a message. Hopefully he didn't read it because it was a dorky one. Haha. I wish I had his number

Sternberg Advertisement

Full-page ad for Sternberg, Hall & Co. that appeared on page 103 of the 1869-1870 Chenango County, N.Y. Business Directory. The ad notes "Designing and Drafting!" services in a stylish Old English font. Beneath "Designing and Drafting!" the ad states, "NEATLY AND PROMPTLY EXECUTED. Persons wishing anything in our line are invited to give us a call and examine our stock, and learn that we are determined not to be undersold by any other establishment."

W.H. Sternberg (1832 - 1906) grew up working in his father's (Nicholas Sternberg) lumber planing mill (saw mill), although it was a much smaller mill than the younger Sternberg's. W.H. Sternberg's factory was noted in the local newspaper as "a leading Norwich industry" and indeed it was large business for the day. The factory itself was a three-story brick structure with lots of windows and a four-story brick smokestack. A photo of the factory from about 1875 (when W.H. Sternberg owned it) shows about 30 employees standing out in front of the building. Employee names included: James Stack (long-time mill employee), Charles Barber, Clinton Merrill, James Sherwood and Mr. Bowker (distinguished in the photo with long flowing white whiskers). With 30 employees , the Sternberg Mill (also known as the "Sternberg Sash and Blind Company") was putting out a high volume of high quality finished wood millwork products (doors, newel posts, window sashes, balausters and more) as well as dressed lumber throughout the New England area. It's also likely that many of their finished products were being shipped by rail to cities in the west. At this time (1875), the population of Norwich was only a few hundred people - considerably less than 1,000 people. It's impossible that the town itself or even the local area around Norwich could have supported a woodworking factory with 30 full-time employees.

Sternberg's Steam Planing Mill was definitely an efficient and high volume production factory. The equipment which produced high-quality decorative millwork was expensive to purchase and business demanded a certain level of orders in order to cover the payments on such expensive machinery. Also, most steam-powered saw-mills of the day were frequently shoddy open-air shacks (not established facilities in brick buildings) with a large boiler in the middle which provided steam to a cylinder steam engine. Sometimes steam leaked from boilers or pipes. Steam blew from the governor and from the steam exhaust and the work was hot and humid. Cotton belts and pulleys connected the equipment and the area smelled like a mixture of fresh wood, grease, burning wood and steam. When in full operation the sawdust from the mill provided more than enough fuel to power the boiler.

In addition to owning one of the leading businesses in Norwich with a large number of employees, Sternberg also served as Mayor or Norwich in 1864. Mayors (or "Presidents" as they were called then in Norwich) served one-year terms. The town Clerk in 1864 was Orson Pope. Also Norwich was originally known as a "Hamlet". This changed in 1816 when the town incorporated as a "Village". This changed again later when it incorporated as a "City". So, technically, Sternberg was "President of a Village" vs. "Mayor of a City", but in any case it was the highest elected position in Norwich.

Theater

The SOMArts Theater is ideal for performances and other events that require a stage and stage lighting. "House" dimensions are 54' x 35' (LxW). House walls are painted black to create a black box venue within our larger venue. Stage lighting and theatrical soft goods are available on a pipe grid over the stage. A movable tech booth is available for a FOH tech operating position for stage managers and lighting/sound operators. Seating includes 140 padded non-folding chairs. Additional chairs may be brought in from an outside source. Sound reinforcement, additional lighting to supplement the house rep plot and soft goods can be rented to supplement the included equipment.

Paint

I used a spray primer coat followed by a coat of exterior flat latex. It must be flat to look rusty. I also did one without primer and it seemed to come out OK.

I picked the color at the hardware store by taking paint sample cards out to the store's rental yard and finding one that matched well with rusty old equipment.

If you go to a paint store I suggest you take a rusty thing with you to match the color with.

1948 Rolls Royce at the pump

1947-1959 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith
While driving down the expressway the other day I spotted this opulent vintage “Rolls” cruising along in the other lane. I had to try and get a picture of this rare beauty before the sun set. As luck was with me, the driver took the off ramp leading to our neighborhood. While stopped for a red light I pulled along side and hollered over at the driver, asking if he had time to pull over and allow me to take some pictures. He informed me he was looking for a gas (well, okay, my Brit friends, a “petrol”) station. Okay, so I followed him to a nearby gas/petrol station and, well..........obviously I got some pictures.

While chatting with the fellow (the driver – actually a chauffer to be exact), he “claimed” this 1947-48 Rolls Royce had once been owned by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (Henry William Frederick, member of the British Royal Family, the third son of George V of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary, and thus uncle to Elizabeth II. and his wife, The Duchess, (nee The Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott), the daughter of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch & Queensberry, Scotland’s largest landowner. While all this sounds impressive, I have not been able to verify this information and frankly, I remain skeptical as to its authenticity. The owner of this classic vehicle remains unknown, albeit, he reportedly lives in close proximity to where we reside.

Following is a long (and probably boring to most) history about the 1947-1959 Roll-Royce Silver Wraith.

The Silver Wraith, launched in 1947, was an evolution of the pre-war Wraith and was offered in the traditional chassis form ready for the fitting of Bespoke coachwork. The 4,257cc overhead-inlet, side-exhaust engine developed before the war was used, as well as a modified coil and wishbone independent front suspension. Hydraulic brakes were used for the first time on a Rolls-Royce.

Following their pre-war tradition of manufacturing a rolling-chassis only, Rolls-Royce delivered these cars to be bodied by independent coachbuilders. Some rationalization however was apparent because the sister model Bentley Mark VI incorporated into a 7 inches shorter frame the same major technical components. The Silver Wraith outlived the Mark VI and in fact survived until 1959 having been modernized step by step with vital improvements like automatic gearbox becoming an option in 1952 and power assisted steering in 1956. An engine bored out to 4,566 cc had been phased in in 1951 and in 1954 capacity was increased to 4,887 cc. The Silver Wraith was the last Rolls-Royce model to show a vast variety of coachwork styles.
The Silver Wraith differed from the Mark VI in that, rather than being offered as a complete car, the tradition of manufacturing a rolling-chasses only was maintained, the body being erected by a coachbuilder.

The England of the post war era had more urgent requirements than luxury motor cars. The economy had suffered and production was severely handicapped by shortages of raw materials. Further, the high priced, high quality car had become subject to a prohibitive purchase tax. To add to the misery petrol was rationed and only available on coupons.

Rolls-Royce, therefore, approached the subject of production of the Silver Wraith with not only hesitation but great care. It had been decided that Rolls-Royces and Bentleys should not continue to be built in strictly separate series. Instead, it had been agreed essential that as many parts of the chassis, engine and gearbox should be identical for the different makes and thus interchangeable. The fitted hydraulic jacks shown on the chassis drawing were never fitted. In this regard the Silver Wraith illustrated the company’s new philosophy that complicated components did not belong on a chassis, which should be reliable and easy to maintain anywhere in the world.
In respect of the engine there were no notable differences between the Silver Wraith and the Mark VI. A camshaft with lower lift than that of the Bentley, and a single Stromberg carburettor instead of twin SU carburettors were the only modifications. Thus more torque was gained at low revolutions.

One technical sophistication proved to be a shortcoming. The upper cylinder liners were polished and chrome plated. In theory this should have helped the engine in achieving extraordinary mileage. It was hoped that a re-bore would not be necessary before 100,000 miles (160,000 km) was reached, which could then be carried out during a general overhaul. In practice the quality of chrome plating did not live up to expectations. Many of those engines that were used for town traffic became unserviceable after very low mileages. After a short time this problem, which was common to the Silver Wraith and the Mark VI, was solved. Cylinder lines of hardened steel with chrome content were pressed into the engine blocks.

I've been watching and waiting for about 6 months to get one of these things... and I finally got a deal! It's just the Jobo CPE-2 without a lift, but it will definitely work for the time being. I got this thing so I can do color prints in conjunction with my recenltly purchased dichro enlarger head. I'm also anxious to try developing some color film... bleach bypass is definitely in my near future!

Project 365 #166: 150611 The Tower Of Power

Dave and Carol were kind enough to give me a change of scenery tonight and collected me for a dinner date at their house.

It was a lovely evening, and it was of course always nice to see Socks the cat again. As usual I got some Socks photos, but I think Dave really wanted to feature this.

It's his hi-fi stand, of which he's very proud indeed. It has, as you can see, lots of shelves and stands at about the height of my chin.

It's a terrible photo (low light, compact, no flash) but I hope it conveys the sense of scale and makes Dave pleased. ;)

The D Stock is composed of six-car trains, as opposed to the seven-car trains of CO/CP, and R Stock, whose cars were shorter. The traction motors (type LT118) are the same as on the 1973 Tube Stock only higher although bogies are different.
D Stock brought many innovations. The rubber coil suspension, for example, meant a smoother ride for passengers. The driver's cab is more ergonomic, the seat being of a swiveling design that allows it to be move forwards, backwards, up or down. The dead man's handle of earlier trains is replaced by a joystick handle which only needs to be twisted for the dead man feature, and moved fore and aft for motoring and braking the train. Additionally, there is a Train Management System (replacing the original Train Equipment Panel) that highlights faults to the driver.
The most noticeable difference between D Stock and earlier trains is that the doors are single leaf. Originally, passengers pressed door-control buttons to open them, but door operation is now controlled by the driver. Posters explaining how to operate the door buttons were put up around Tube stations in English, French and German when the stock was first introduced.
The D stock windows had to be modified because of overheating in the carriages when new, with pull-down opening windows installed in each car.
The stock was ordered in 1976 to replace the pre-war CO/CP Stock and post-war R Stock fleet operating on the District Line. 75 trains were built by Metro-Cammell, entering service on 28 January 1980, with final deliveries in 1983.
The O and P Stock was built for the Metropolitan Line and Hammersmith & City Line in 1937–1940 by Gloucester RC&W and Birmingham RC&W. In all there were 262 driving motors (DM) and 103 trailers. The trailers were constructed to the same physical design as the DMs, with provision for the fitting out of a driving cab at one end of the car, although while used as a trailer the unused cab doors were locked closed.
The O stock was built for the Hammersmith & City service and the P stock for the Metropolitan Line service to Uxbridge, although initially some worked on the District Line's Putney Bridge to Edgware Road service. The guard's position on the O stock DMs was in the cab, this continuing the policy of the former Metropolitan Railway. In contrast, the guard's position on the P stock was at the trailing end of the DMs, following the practice of the District Line (and the tube lines).
As built the units had Metadyne equipment, being classified as O Stock and P Stock. The units were originally built as two-car sets, but an intermediate trailer was later added.
From the late 1940s, some of the P Stock used on the Uxbridge services were transferred to the Circle Line to replace the former Metropolitan Railway Stock still in use. Trains of F Stock were transferred from the District Line for use on the Uxbridge services.
Starting in 1955 the Metadyne equipment was removed from the DMs and was replaced with PCM equipment. Converted cars were renumbered from 1xxxx to 5xxxx and reclassified with a C (meaning Converted) before the O or the P.
In the early 1960s, the remaining P (or CP) stock still used on the Uxbridge services was transferred to the District Line. Metropolitan Line services were taken over by new trains of A Stock.
In the late 1960s the CO/CP Stock used on the Circle Line and Hammersmith & City Line was transferred to the District Line (following the introduction of C69 Stock.
Withdrawals started in earnest in 1977 following the introduction of new trains of C77 Stock for use on services between Wimbledon and Edgware Road (which were restricted to six cars, rather than the seven cars then used on the rest of the District Line). The bulk of the CO/CP Stock (as well as R Stock) were replaced by new trains of D Stock in the early 1980s. The last examples were withdrawn in 1981; they were the last red painted sub-surface stock used on the London Underground.

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is the championship event for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s rodeo year.

The 2010 Wrangler NFR Bareback Contestants were 3-Ryan Gray, 7-Steven Dent, 17-Clint Cannon, 18-Wes Stevenson, 39-Bobby Mote, 45-Dusty La Valley, 52-Will Lowe, 56-Kelly Timberman, 58-Justin McDaniel, 61-Steven Peebles, 67-Jason Havens, 69-Kaycee Field, 70-Matt Bright, 78-Joe Gunderson, and 98-D.V. Fennell.

Bareback riding is a roughstock event where the contestant's score is equally dependent upon his performance and the horse's performance. The cowboy will attempt to ride his horse for eight seconds by hanging on to a handle similar to a suitcase handle on a strap, cinched on his horse.

The cowboy must ‘mark his horse out,’ or have both his spurs touching the horse’s shoulders until the horse’s feet touch the ground after horse’s first move out of the chute. Failure to do this will result in a disqualification. If the cowboy touches the horse, himself, or any of his equipment with his free hand he is disqualified.

The cowboy is judged on how he spurs, to what degree his toes stay turned out during the ride as he spurs, as well as how well the cowboy handles the horse’s moves. The horse is scored on how hard he is to ride based on if the horse changes direction, and bucks with lots of energy and power.
