We caught a cab early Sunday morning for Midway airport. I dropped Mitzi off at the Southwest terminal, where she caught her flight back to Sacramento and then called Atlantic to pick me up and take me to the general aviation area. Just as we got there, a nasty thunderstorm greeted us. So I went inside and snoozed for a bit in the pilot lounge while I waited for the storm to pass. By 10 oclock, it looked better, so I headed to the plane and tried my best to get a word in on the radio so I get get a taxi clearance. There were so many airliners and corporate jets waiting and I felt like a back bencher on parliament during question time (oh that's an obscure reference, I should have said I felt like a small town newspaper reporter at a White House press conference, that is, if the cuurent occupant thereof actually held press conferences).
I finally got my clearance and skedaddled out of there before the
storms came back or ATC could yell at me for anything. I watched the storms in the distance off my left wing and monitored the chunky radar images on the Bushnell to stay clear of them. A couple times I ventured a little too close trying to follow a straight-line path to Cleveland and paid a price of bumping and shaking. Finally, Flight Watch said the storms were dissipating and I would beat the next wave to Cleveland. She was right and my approach to Burke Lakefront was smooth as I hugged the Lake Erie shoreline. I made a nice crosswind landing on 24 left and I was sorry no one was in the plane to witness it.
I caught the rapid train (now called the red line) and then checked
into the hotel at the Cleveland Clinic. Then I walked to campus for a nostalgia tour and noticed the many changes that had taken place in the 10 years since I graduated (or has it been longer them that?) The biggest change is that the university green is now university blue. It was odd seeing the "greenie" buses and police cars adorned in blue, but I was happy they didn't recognize me and nab me for unpaid parking tickets.
