The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi is a text on kenjutsu and the martial arts in general, written by the samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi circa 1645. There have been various translations made over the years, and it enjoys an audience considerably broader than only that of martial artists: for instance, some business leaders find its discussion of conflict and taking the advantage to be relevant to their work. The modern-day Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu employs it as a manual of technique and philosophy. Schutzhund started at the beginning of this century as a test for working dogs. Its initial purpose was to determine which dogs could be used for breeding and which had true working ability. The growing demand for working dogs made more sophisticated tests and training necessary. These dogs were needed for police training, border patrol, customs, military and herding. As these tests evolved, more people participated just for the sheer enjoyment of seeing if their personal dogs could be trained as effectively as these "professional dogs". Now, over sixty years after the first formal Schutzhund rules were introduced, tens of thousands of people participate in the sport each year. Schutzhund tests three specific areas of a dog's training and behavior. The first, tracking, requires the dog to track footsteps over mixed terrain, change direction and show absolute accuracy and commitment to finding the track. The second phase is obedience. Those who are familiar with AKC obedience will feel more comfortable in this area, as many of the exercises are similar to those in Open and Utility. There is heeling, both on and off lead. The sit, down and stand are also done, except when the dog is moving. But Schutzhund applies its own style to this work. Instead of a forty foot ring, the handler and dog work on a soccer sized trial field. Some exercises require the dog to work under the noise of a firing gun. In addition to the normal dumbbell retrieval, the dog must retrieve over a 'jump' and a 6 ft. wall. Down stays and a long send away conclude the test. The final test is the most misunderstood by the general public. This is protection. The most important point to understand when watching a protection routine, is the relationship between dog and handler. The dog must never bite the trial helper, unless either the dog or the handler is attacked. Then it must attack fully and without hesitation. But here the real difference becomes apparent. The dog must stop biting on the command of the handler and guard the trial helper without further aggression. Often people confuse Schutzhund protection training with police dog or personal protection work. The Schutzhund dog is capable of the feats of never being aggressive except under those specific situations it is trained to face, and even then it must always be under the absolute control of the handler. The above tests are difficult enough, but to make it even more demanding, they all happen in one day during competitions that are held all over the country. These trials are held by local clubs or in regional and national championships. Each dog is judged by a point system that then determines the winner of the trial. When a dog successfully completes the first trial, it is awarded a title of Schutzhund I. It can then progress to Schutzhund II and, the ultimate, Schutzhund III. Each level makes ever greater demands on the dog and training in all three areas. Any Schutzhunder will tell you that a high scoring Schutzhund III dog is the ultimate working dog: one in a thousand of all working dogs.

The main staircase in the Stanley Hotel sits directly across from the main doors and takes hotel patrons ("Guests Only please", as the sign says!) up to the second floor.

Directly behind the staircase is another set of stairs leading to the basement and the employee tunnels. Beyond that is the exit the courtyard and on the left hand side you can just make out the entrance to the hotel bar (a favorite destination).

The hotel is said to be haunted not only by the spirits of its builders, F.O Stanley and his wife Flora Stanley, but also by the ghost of the man who owned the land before the Stanleys, a Lord Dunraven.

Being an Irish peer and non-American, it was illegal at the time for Lord Dunraven to own any land in Colorado under the Homesteaders Act. This didn't stop Dunraven from acquiring most of of Estes Park - 15,000 acres - through... lets say nefarious means. His plan was to turn the park into a hunting ground for himself and his friends, which he effectively did. In the process he hunted into near extinction all the native elk, wolves, bears and other large animals.

Dunraven built an English Hotel (not the Stanley) which became the first tourist facility in Estes Park. Adding to his somewhat disreputable reputation, Dunraven went about hiring women from the local towns to staff it and act as Ladies of the Evening for his various friends. Once he had essentially exhausted the supply of willing ladies, it's said he would often be seen in the local towns proposing prostitution to any lady he happened upon and fancied. He used a little trick whereby he would take their left hands and introduce himself. Then, being an expert pick-pocket, he would remove their wedding rings without them knowing and ask if they would act as prostitutes in his hotel. When the lady he propositioned complained (usually loudly and with some slapping I've no doubt) she was married and her husband stepped in, Lord Dunraven would apologize and point out the lady was not wearing a wedding ring so he couldn't know she wasn't single. According to the stories this often lead to a fight between wife and husband, and several women were left without homes to return to... in which case Lord Dunraven was fortuitously available to help them!

Women who visit the Stanley Hotel still report encountering Lord Dunraven. Many feel someone take their hand. Others discover jewelry missing and some even report being felt in "inappropriate places" upon their person. The staircase, oddly, is one of the places where many of these encounters take place. Seems Lord Dunraven has set up a screening spot to survey the hotel's female guests.

In the end Lord Dunraven's hunting preserve and land grab plot came apart. The influx of new settlers brought demands for land and put pressure on him to sell, particularly as the local population had no interest in seeing Estes Park remain his private hunting grounds, or indeed of having Dunraven and his friends in Estes Park at all.

In the late 1880s Dunraven gave in and sold a large chunk of his holdings to F.O. Stanley. As Dunraven put it: "People came in disputing claims, kicking up rows: exorbitant land taxes got into arrears; and we were in constant litigation. The show could not be managed from home, and we were in constant danger of being frozen out. So we sold for what we could get and cleared out, and I have never been there since."

Well, he was never back in corporeal form anyway...

On March 25, 1626, Don Juan Nino de Tabora boarded the El Almirante galleon and left Mexico to go to the Philippines. He brought along the brown image of the Blessed Virgin. The “El Almirante” safely braved the dangers of the stormy seas and a fire aboard the ship for three months. It finally arrived in the ports of Manila on July 18, 1626. Governor Tabora credited the Blessed Virgin for the galleon's safe and successful journey and called for a celebration for the image's arrival. A religious procession was held to transfer the image to the Manila Catholic Cathedral in Intramuros. It was believed that because the Blessed Virgin provided safe voyage for the galleon, she was named Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buen Viaje. The Blessed Virgin assures that everyone will be safe in any voyage, any journey, any pilgrimage or trip for as long as the Way is Jesus, also the truth and the Life.
Upon Governor Tabora's death in 1632, the Blessed Virgin was turned over to the Jesuit fathers who were constructing a church in Antipolo. A church was to be built for the Blessed Virgin in the nearby barrio of Sta.Cruz although the Jesuit fathers found it hard to move it there from the Church of Antipolo. As if in protest of leaving the town, the image was always found on the tree trunk of Tipolo which grew in the original site of the old church. Because of such, a pedestal was curved out of the trunks of that tree and the Blessed Virgin became locally known as the Virgin of Antipolo.
When the Chinese community in Antipolo revolted, they burned the church as well as the image. However, the Blessed Virgin was recovered unblemished except for a slight streak on her right cheek. It was said that the image was stabbed by the Chinese non-believers.
The image was transferred to Manila then to Cavite where it stayed for 14 years.It was brought on board the galleons of the Filipinas-Mexico trade route on round trips from Manila to Acapulco.
The Antipolo Church became a Japanese garrison during World War II. The image was kept in a drum and was buried under the convent floor. When the town was destroyed, the image was taken by the devotees to the house of Rosario Ocampo. It was later transferred to Quiapo Church before it was brought back to Antipolo when the war was over.
The image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage was sculptured by Mexican craftsmen. It was carved from dark hard wood similar to the Black Nazarene in Quiapo. One would note the presence of her famous "plancha de oro. It was an exquisite, 18th century rococo-style frontal dress of solid 18 karat gold with a design of various flowers and birds. Her crown which was made of solid 18 karat gold is completely studded with rose-cut diamonds, large natural Sulu pearls, Burmese rubies, Colombian emeralds, and Indian blue sapphires. Her aureola" halo, also made of solid 18 karat gold is studded with precious gems like diamonds, pearls, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. Her 18 karat gold hair pins or "atochas" and rings are all studded with rose-cut diamonds and Sulu pearls. Her cape has a magnificent and heavy silver-gilt thread embroidery. She also seems to be wearing a wig made of human hair. Unfortunately, all of the magnificent jewels of the "Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buen Viaje" disappeared at the turn of the 20th century. It was said that a caretaker had absconded with the entire lot to Hong Kong.
She was canonically on November 26, 1926 by Archbishop Michael J. O'Doherty in Luneta Park.

Thrice gig tonight. I though I'd wear rings today.

I was going to wear them on Tuesday but gave up after 15 minutes of trying to pop in the segment on just one ( segment rings are tricky things). I think the problem may have been too much caffeine in my coffee because the machine broke and was only giving warm water for decaf. And when ever I try and do something delicate I get the shakes. This morning I manages to sort both rings our easily.

Its a shame I have my desk lamp sticking out the end of my nose!

This is the kind of scenery that you can expect when driving around the Ring of Kerry, one of the top tourist attractions in Ireland.
Sadly. Because Ireland doesn't seem to have realized that if you want a lot of tourists to look at something, you might want to widen those roads a little, and maybe even put up signs that tell you where to go (I know, crazy idea).
Although the scenery was beautiful to look at during those rare hours when it didn't rain, I didn't really enjoy traveling in that area that much (and the prizes are a complete rip-off).
I hope I didn't offend anybody.
