The Twilight Zone: Vol. 14 Episodes: "One for the Angels" (Ep. 2, October 9, 1959) - A salesman (Ed Wynn) cleverly eludes Death. But if he lives, a little girl must die in his place. Only the salesman's greatest pitch can save her! "The Man in the Bottle" (Ep. 38, October 7, 1960) - A discontented curio shop owner thinks he's finally found happiness when a genie he discovers in an old bottle grants him four wishes. But be careful what you wish for. "The Arrival" (Ep. 67, September 22, 1961) - A plane lands safely, but all its passengers, pilot and crew are missing! When a veteran FAA investigator is called upon to solve the mystery, his own past provides the answer. "In Praise of Pip" (Ep. 121, September 27, 1963) - An alcoholic bookie (Jack Klugman) regrets that he wasn't a better father to his son, Pip (Bill Mumy), critically wounded in South Vietnam. A visit to an amusement park gives them both a second chance. Volume 14 of The Twilight Zone on DVD is a wall-to-wall tribute to series creator Rod Serling. All four TV episodes represented here are original ideas scripted by Serling himself, with his strengths--and some of his weaknesses--on display. "One for the Angels" was the second episode broadcast in the series and demonstrates Serling's sentimental streak: an aging street peddler (former vaudevillian Ed Wynn) is confronted by Death (Murray Hamilton, bearing a curious resemblance to Serling), but strikes a clever deal to forestall his demise. Ah, but there's always a catch... "The Man in the Bottle" is a variation on the old genie-in-a-magic-lamp number, except that this time the elegant genie comes out of an ordinary wine bottle. Luther Adler plays a bitter antique store owner who learns his lesson in four short wishes. Not much of an episode, really, but the punch line to the third wish is one of those startling twists that stuck in the collective imagination of Zone fans everywhere. The eerie "Arrival" indulges Serling's fondness for aviation stories, as a DC-3 pulls into a hangar with not a soul aboard--not even the pilot. Like many of Serling's tales, it follows the theme of regret, which also hangs heavy in "In Praise of Pip," the opening episode of the series' fifth and final broadcast year, 1963. A two-bit bookie (Jack Klugman) reflects on his wasted life when he learns that his son is near death on a Vietnam battlefield. Although the episode is derivative of Serling's previous efforts on the same topic, this one does provide a glimpse of two actors who appeared frequently on the Zone, Klugman and kid actor Billy Mumy. Klugman's anguished aside about Vietnam ("There isn't even supposed to be a war going on there, and my kid is dying") may well be American popular culture's first, hesitant questioning of a war that would soon bloom into a national nightmare. --Robert Horton (11) Alt?ntepe Beko Servisi .:444 1 494:. Manifold: Time The year is 2010. More than a century of ecological damage, industrial and technological expansion, and unchecked population growth has left the Earth on the brink of devastation. As the world's governments turn inward, one man dares to envision a bolder, brighter future. That man, Reid Malenfant, has a very different solution to the problems plaguing the planet: the exploration and colonization of space. Now Malenfant gambles the very existence of time on a single desperate throw of the dice. Battling national sabotage and international outcry, as apocalyptic riots sweep the globe, he builds a spacecraft and launches it into deep space. The odds are a trillion to one against him. Or are they? Leave it to the consistently clever Stephen Baxter to pull the old bait and switch. A story that begins as a hoary asteroid-mining tale, set in 2010 against the by-now familiar spiel of fulfilling humanity's pan-galactic Manifest Destiny, instead takes a bold, delightful ascent into a trajectory far more ambitious. To ensure its survival, humankind need not merely master the galaxy but also the flow of time itself. Manifold: Time's would-be asteroid-miner-in-chief is bootstrap space entrepreneur Reid Malenfant, a media-savvy firebrand who's showed those crotchety NASA folks what's what with his ready-to-fly Big Dumb Booster, piloted by a genetically enhanced super-squid. But Malenfant's near-term plans to exploit the asteroids get diverted when he crosses paths with creepy mathematician and eschatologist Cornelius Taine. Applying Bayes's theorem and a series of other statistical do-si-dos, Taine convinces Malenfant that an inescapable extinction event--the "Carter catastrophe"--is nigh, and that even working to colonize the galaxy might not be enough to save humanity. The answer: build a Feynman "radio" to listen to the future and, by detecting coded quantum waves traveling back through time, divine the fate of human "downstreamers" and find the key to their survival. Space flight, time travel, and even squid negotiations ensue, while Earth is gripped in Last Days madness. Once again, the award-spangled Baxter gives us sci-fi at its beard-stroking best, with an imaginative, audacious plot line that's firmly grounded in good science, reminiscent of Baxter's own excellent Vacuum Diagrams. --Paul Hughes (10) Manifold Valley The Manifold Valley winds its way through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Peak District National Park. These valleys have been described as the Switzerland of Staffordshire. Referring to the railway line, the "Tramway and Railway World" of 14th July 1904 says :- "The line passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world". How very true this is! The Manifold Way closely follows the rivers Manifold and Hamps, and runs from Hulme End to Waterhouses, a distance of 8.25 to 9 miles depending on which route is taken. Manifold Institute Manifold students undergoing some practicals with the Resource Person, Nathaniel Yankson digital refrigeration manifold The year is 2020. Fueled by an insatiable curiosity, Reid Malenfant ventures to the far edge of the solar system, where he discovers a strange artifact left behind by an alien civilization: A gateway that functions as a kind of quantum transporter, allowing virtually instantaneous travel over the vast distances of interstellar space. What lies on the other side of the gateway? Malenfant decides to find out. Yet he will soon be faced with an impossible choice that will push him beyond terror, beyond sanity, beyond humanity itself. Meanwhile on Earth the Japanese scientist Nemoto fears her worst nightmares are coming true. Startling discoveries reveal that the Moon, Venus, even Mars once thrived with life–life that was snuffed out not just once but many times, in cycles of birth and destruction. And the next chilling cycle is set to begin again . . . Stephen Baxter follows up his Arthur C. Clarke Award nominee Manifold: Time with the second book in the Manifold series, Manifold: Space. In this novel, former shuttle pilot and astronaut Reid Malenfant meets his destiny once again in a tale that stretches the bounds of both space and time. The year is 2020 and the Japanese have colonized the moon. The 60-year-old Malenfant is called there by a young scientist named Nemoto who has discovered something in the asteroid belt that can only mean humans are not alone in the universe. The aliens seem robotic in nature and appear to be building something in Earth's backyard. The Gaijin, as they are called by humans, don't respond to communication efforts so an unmanned ship is launched to investigate. In the meantime, Malenfant decides answers are only possible by mounting an expedition to Alpha Centauri, which may be where the Gaijin come from. Baxter, who won the John W. Campbell Award and the Philip K. Dick Award for his novel The Time Ships, orchestrates a stunning array of scientific possibilities in Manifold: Space. Each chapter adds a new piece to his mosaic of humanity's future. The novel is admirable in its enormous scope, but it's hard to invest much emotion in the characters. Although they are well drawn, they vanish for long periods of time as Baxter leapfrogs through time and space. Manifold: Space, by its nature, lacks passion but excels in grand ideas. --Kathie Huddleston The year is 2020. My Canon 30D | repair | The shutter release on my Canon 30D started to misbehave. The focus position was fine but the release was becoming progressively harder to trigger. It turned out that it's a very common problem on the entire 10,20, 30 &40D range and with the repair costing at least a third to a half of the worth of the body I bought a switch and did it myself! There's excellent resource material on the .net and my thanks go to all who went before and documented it. The screws are much harder to remove than I anticipated - make sure you've got really good screwdrivers and actually soldering such a small component was very difficult especially if you're obsessed with not overheating it. Once you've taken one of these cameras apart it destroys the nice feeling that you've got a 'semi-pro' model. They look no better made than any other consumer electronic device - all self tapping screws and plastic! 095-365 Mike Day 95: I generally do not pay for my portraits but Mikes portrait cost me $221! Mike was the repairman fixing our freezer. It was the second or third time that I had tried to fix it but after the problem came back again we decided to call an expert. Mike was a very kind helpful man, He clearly explained what the problem was and actually showed me what I could do to fix it myself but I we not totally comfortable doing it so we decied to have him repair it. beet jemstones i scrub the skins and then peel them roughly with a sharp knife, it's the peelings that i use to make beet kvass. i got the results back from yet another lab analyses and it says that it is my kidneys and adrenals that are fatigued (no lyme disease, no arthritis, no vitamin deficiency) which is why i am going through pre- menopause so early in life. it was just a few years ago i ended living a life of stress (working 60+ hours a week), smoking, drinking, the fast lane (partying even harder than working), eating super rich unhealthy foods and now i am paying for it, in blood. time for a kidney tonic and i happen to have many beets in my garden that amaya planted. they are one of the best cures for a myriad of ailments especially kidney and liver problems, too much acid in the body, to treat anemia, for leukemia (beets are very anti-cancerous), building red blood cells, rejuvenation of hair, fingernails and skin, full of folic acid they are very important for women. Beet Kvass *large raw organic beetroot, peeled and chopped up coarsely. (or you do what i do with chunky peelings) *1/4 cup whey made fresh from raw milk during cheese making or strain off of yogurt (not necessary but speads up the kvass process, you want the white lacto bacteria to form) *1 teaspoon of sea salt *filtered water Place beetroot, whey and salt in a glass container. Add filtered water to fill the container. Stir well and cover securely. Keep at room temperature for at least 2 days before transferring to refrigerator (mine is still on my countertop) Drink a glass morning and night for health benefits. Beet kvass is great for a digestive aid, blood tonic, promotes regularity, alkalizes the blood, and a good treatment for kidney stones and other ailments. You can use it in place of vinegar for some vivid salad dressings. I used the beet chunks after the ferment to make my borscht soup with a splash of this beet elixir. Once-a-Month Cooking is the perfect cookbook for today's busy lifestyles. (17) Tomato Ketchup Prawns Prawns are sweet and have an enticing flavour. Undoubtedly, they are one of my favourite ingredients. They may be caught in salt water and fresh water and they are being farmed too. There are prawn farms in Singapore. One such high-tech marine prawn farm is located at the sea front on Pulau Ubin. This farm produces both black tiger prawns and white prawns all year round. Due to intensive cultivation, black tiger prawns are harvested every 120 days at the farm. Annually there are two and a half cycles. Usually prawns caught from salt water are more expensive. Although shelled prawns or shrimps are available from chiller or freezer of the supermarkets. I prefer to buy them fresh and raw from the wet market because more flavour is retained. When using prawns in your dishes, overcooking should be avoided as this makes the prawns tough. To avoid this, it is always better to saute the prawns till just cooked and then set aside. Add them back to the dish at the last stage of cooking. When purchasing prawns, look for glossy, undamaged shells, legs and tails, plump and shinny black eyes. They should be no signs of dark or discolouration. Refrigerate as soon as after purchase. For convenience, divide into quantities required for each meal or recipe and keep them in plastic bags before freezing. Before cooking prawns, whether they are used with shells intact or shelled, remember to remove the intestinal veins. Prawns shells are segmented just bend the shells to expose the joint, make a small incision in each prawn’s back and carefully draw out the dark vein. A toothpick is a handy tool here. When recipes call for prawns to be shelled, retain the last segment of shell and the tail fins to give a more decorative appearance to the finished dish, as shown here in the picture. Shells and heads of prawns make good stock. To obtain this, fry them in a little oil on high heat, add just enough of hot water to cover, and boil for 10-15 minutes. Strain, discard shells and freeze the stock if not immediately required. . This type of stock is used in our local fare, prawn noodle soup. Homemade, gluten-free chocolate pudding I've been experimenting with a mostly gluten-free diet (about 98% gluten-free). My friend Matthew has celiac disease and so when I'm with him, we go to places that specialise in gluten-free food (Risotteria and Friedman's Lunch are two of my favorites now). I started buying gluten-free versions of staple items and have been really pleased with the results. This is something I made while experimenting with smoothies. In the Vita Mix, I blended 2/3 cup of unsweetened, vanilla flavored almond milk, one banana, 2 tablespoons of almond butter, and one heaping scoop of Whole Foods chocolate flavored soy protein powder with spirulina. This makes a rather thick shake, so I put some in a bowl and set it in the freezer for about 15 minutes. It went very cold and even more thick, about the consistency of custard. To switch up the texture, I crumbled some Mi-Del gluten-free mini chocolate chip cookies on top (one serving of five cookies has 130 calories). This was really awesome. I'm going to make it over and over, and I'd even serve it to guests. For more of a shake/smoothie, add more almond (or soy, or rice, or oat) milk. I've also made a variation of this with fresh raspberries, too, which was good, but chocolate/raspberry isn't a combination I'm ridiculously crazy for. If it is for you, totally try that. Nutrition wise, this is not light on calories (NOTE - this makes a very large serving; I could easily halve it and no one would feel cheated.): The almond butter has about 190 calories, the banana is about 70 calories, the protein powder is 108 calories, the almond milk has 30 calories, and the cookies have 130 calories. That's about 530 calories for this dessert. BUT, it's a treat and one made with great ingredients. Also, if you mostly eat vegetables all day and lay off high calorie dishes during other meals, you can still manage to have a low calorie day. (My total for this day clocked in at 1200 and I feel still full hours after finishing eating for the day.) Ice Cream Scoops of My Household, in Chronological Order The Colony, Texas September 9, 2008 left to right: 1. Nuroll. A sentimental favorite – I swiped this from my parents, since it was the main ice cream scoop in our house when I was a kid, as far back as I can remember. It pains me to admit it doesn’t cut through hard ice cream as well as some of our other current ice cream scoops, but I can appreciate its solid metal, seamless construction. And it has lasted easily over forty years, so its design isn’t all bad. 2. OXO Good Grips. I married into this one. This has been the best-working, most reliable ice cream scoop in our house so far (but the latest one might well show it up). The pointed scoop really cuts through the ice cream… in fact, if this scoop is wielded clumsily enough, the tip of the scoop tends to poke through the walls of the cardboard ice cream carton! The dingy finish on the metal on this one (as on the previous one) comes purely through running this aluminum implement through the dishwasher, which you’re not supposed to do… but that’s the fate of just about every non-electric kitchen implement in our house. 3. Indeterminate brand. These mechanical-type scoops never seem to be up to the task: Not only are they hard to dig into the ice cream, but their scoop-clearing mechanisms as often as not simply jam up… at any rate, they never actually push the ice cream out of the scoop. Up until a few weeks ago we also had a Farberware scoop similar to this one (only with a plastic thumb-lever that was supposed to turn the gear) but it jammed up as always and I summarily threw it out in disgust. It seems that in ice cream scoops, the simpler the better. 4 and 5. Indeterminate brand. Probably some cheapo things I got hanging off the racks at some supermarket. These are NOT the kind with the antifreeze sealed inside (which I refuse to buy, since you REALLY have to hand wash those). Not too flimsy plastic, but they’re too light to really dig into the ice cream. I don’t know why I haven’t discarded these yet. 6. Good Cook. The newcomer: As of this writing, I bought this one less than twenty-four hours ago, after seeing over the past few months the supplies of these dwindle at Kroger, down to this last one. (They were actually racked-up INSIDE the ice cream freezer at the store, frost forming on their plastic packages and all.) Called the Twister, this agressively-shaped ice cream scoop (the word “auger” was actually used on the packaging!) is designed to cut through the hardest of ice cream. I thought the point on the OXO Good Grips scoop was impressive, but this one could actually jab you! (On the other end, the handle of this one looks to me like some sort of sex toy.) I’ve used this ice cream scoop once so far, and it worked well (albeit the ice cream was not particularly hard). Note the shiny new finish on the aluminum… its inevitable dishwashing hasn’t come to pass. “HAND WASH ONLY” it has inscribed right on the handle… Right! Not likely in our busy house! This photograph is in the public domain. Blue... kissed by frost! This time, I was looking for some floral shots and spotted an area where these flowers grew in abundance. Looked around and liked this flower in particular 'coz for some reason this is the only one that seemed to be kissed by the morning frost. Again, no crop during post processing, and yes I could've gotten a much closer shot, but prefered this one. Liked how the blue flowers stood out against the green background. Anyhow, constructive criticism is always welcome and appreciated. Have a great weeked. TURKEY FREEZER BAGS - FREEZER BAGS
Turkey Freezer Bags - Stainless Steel Freezer Chest. Turkey Freezer Bags
Why my co-workers love me.. Items needed: Vanilla Wafers - base and tail support Chocolate Covered Cherries - body Candy Corn - feathers and beak Jelly Beans - Head Mini Choc Chips - eyes Chocolate Icing - glue Use a pastry bag (or a ziplock bag with a corner clipped off) to squeeze a ring of icing on both cookies. Place Choc Cov Cherries in center of first cookie, use 4-6 candy corn pieces to cover a third of the outside edge of the other cookie. Attach "tail" to the CC Cherry. Use very very small amounts of icing to secure eyes and beaks. Beaks are made by breaking off the white tips of candy corn pieces. Optional: Use red tic-tacks or other small red candy under the head to look like the waddle. I usually do this but forgot to pick up the tic-tacks while I was at the store. As each "turkey" is assembled place it in the freezer on a cookie sheet covered w/ wax paper to allow the icing to firm up and set. You can store them in the 'fridge or freezer for a few days provided you wrap each one in plastic. I usually use the colored saran wrap if I'm taking them to work. If you choose not to individually wrap them the cookies will get stale but the rest of them will be just as delicious. Kids LOVE making these. Turkey Necks and Dumplings Various family members sent necks and wings home with me after Thanksgiving. I had some necks in the freezer from earlier in the year. So... A new dish: Turkey Necks and Dumplings (pot-pie style). Defrost the necks and put them in a large heavy pot with some Canola oil, salt, pepper. Brown until pretty dark. Add some chopped onions and chicken stock to almost cover. Simmer for at least 45 minutes or until meat is loose. Remove and cool. While waiting for the nexk to cool, make up some biscuit batter. Bisquick works great. I was out, so I manually worked some butter in flour until we got that tradition "pea" texture. Salt, baking soda, baking powder and buttermilk to get a batter slightly too thin for biscuit, but thicker than waffle. Pick the meat off the necks. Yup - this will take awhile. Add milk, Emeril's Traditional seasoning, water and a bag of thawed mixed vegetables to the pot. Bring to a boil. Add the meat. Reduce to simmer. Use a disher to place the batter into the simmering soup. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes. Lid up and cook another 10. ZIPLOCK FREEZER BAGS : FREEZER BAGS

DIY - Raincoat. Items Required: Razor or scissors - Something sharp enough to cut the bag. Zipping Freezer Bag - Those oversize sandwich bags. The Rundown: Basically just need to grab a ziplock freezer bag, cut a hole the diameter of the lens out and a small hole in the back for the view finder and go nuts. This works well for lenses that do not extend while focusing and primes. I suggest keeping the number of openings in the bag to a minimum as after so many you may as well be out there without the cover. Of course this probably doesn't come without certain risks so I wont take responsibility for you dropping your camera or any other crazy complications you may encounter. There are quite a few variations of this on the net and I do not mean for it to be original in any way. If you don't wanna be that person running about in the rain with a ziplock bag there are rain coats you can purchase at your local camera shop for many times more the price of the ziplock bag. Pizza dough My pizza dough recipe, to make enough for 4 pizzas: * 2 cups milk (I use raw milk, but any type works fine.) * 4 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil * 4 cup all-purpose flour * 1-1/3 cup whole wheat flour * 2 teaspoons sugar * 3 teaspoons Kosher salt * 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese * 2 teaspoons dried Oregano * 2 teaspoons dried Basil * 2 tablespoons Bread Machine yeast Mix for about 5 minutes with the dough hook until it is smooth. Divide into 4 parts, and let rise for 30 minutes. (I freeze three of them then, double wrapped in plastic and into a ziplock freezer bag.) Roll out to the size of your pan, let rise again before baking. I pre-bake mine for 6 minutes at 425, then top and bake for 15-17 minutes. Einstein's Refrigerator: And Other Stories from the Flip Side of History Steve Silverman was looking for a way to add some spice to his high school lectures when he realized that weird and bizarre true-life stories would capture his students' attention. In fact, they worked so well that the science teacher then began posting his discoveries to his own Web site, which he dubbed Useless Information. Well-researched and clearly sourced, Silverman's unusual tidbits have gained a wide following. In Einstein's Refrigerator, Silverman collects more than 30 of the most fascinating stories he has gathered--tales of forgotten genius, great blunders, and incredible feats of survival, as well as answers to puzzling questions. Einstein's Refrigerator is a remarkable book with spellbinding stories. Whatever happened to the refrigerator Einstein helped invent? While it never became a commercial success, its underlying concepts became the basis for cooling nuclear breeder reactors.
