Spencer Trask financed and supported Thomas Edison

Spencer Trask financed and supported Thomas Edison

Spencer Trask was an American financier, philanthropist, and venture capitalist. Beginning in the 1870s, Trask began investing and supporting entrepreneurs, including Thomas Edison's invention of the electric light bulb and his electricity network. In 1896 he reorganized the New York Times, becoming its majority shareholder and chairman.

Along with his financial acumen, Trask was a generous philanthropist, a leading patron of the arts, a strong supporter of education, and a champion of humanitarian causes. His gifts to his alma mater, Princeton University, set a lecture series in his name, that still continues to this day. He was also an initial trustee of the Teachers' College (now Teachers College, Columbia University) and St. Stephen's College.

Founded in 1900 by the financier Spencer Trask and his wife Katrina, herself a poet, Yaddo is an artists' community located on a 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. Its mission is to nurture the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without interruption in a supportive environment.

Yaddo offers residencies to professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in one or more of the following media: choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Artists may apply individually or as members of collaborative teams of two or three persons. They are selected by panels of other professional artists without regard to financial means. Residencies last from two weeks to two months and include room, board, and studio.

Left without immediate heirs by the deaths of their four young children, the Trasks decided to bequeath their home in Saratoga Springs, New York, to future generations of writers, composers, painters, and other creative artists. In a vision, Katrina Trask saw generations of talented men and women yet unborn walking the lawns of Yaddo, "creating, creating, creating."

The results of the Trasks' legacy have been historic. John Cheever once wrote that the "forty or so acres on which the principal buildings of Yaddo stand have seen more distinguished activity in the arts than any other piece of ground in the English-speaking community and perhaps the world." Collectively, artists who have worked at Yaddo have won 64 Pulitzer Prizes, 27 MacArthur Fellowships, 61 National Book Awards, 24 National Book Critics Circle Awards, 108 Rome Prizes, 49 Whiting Writers' Awards, a Nobel Prize (Saul Bellow, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976), and countless other honors. Many books by Yaddo authors have been made into films. Visitors from Cheever's day include Milton Avery, James Baldwin, Leonard Bernstein, Truman Capote, Aaron Copland, Philip Guston, Patricia Highsmith, Langston Hughes, Ted Hughes, Alfred Kazin, Ulysses Kay, Jacob Lawrence, Sylvia Plath, Katherine Anne Porter, Mario Puzo, Clyfford Still, and Virgil Thomson.

Mr. Spencer Trask was born in 1844 to Alanson and Sarah (Marquand) Trask in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a direct descendant of Captain William Trask, a leader in the formation of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. After graduating from Princeton University in 1866, Spencer Trask joined his uncle to form the investment firm Trask & Brown, which became Spencer Trask & Company in 1881. Mr. Trask became one of New York's leading citizens and one of the country's best known bankers. He was married in 1874 to Miss Katrina Nichols, the love of his life,a famous author of the time. He persisted in his optimistic support of artists and entrepreneurs, despite misfortunes that would set back most ordinary people. The Trasks' four children died within a single week from various illnesses and Katrina became an invalid as a result. In an automobile accident in Boston late in his life, the glass windshield injured Trask's eye so seriously that surgeons had to remove it to save the sight of her other eye. Mr. Trask died in a train accident on New Year's Eve in 1909.

Reference: Wikipedia

(There is speculation that he may have been murdered because he was the only one who died and he did not have to be on that train as his presence was not required at the meeting to which he was headed.)

Barrio Chino Book Part One Page 07

Barrio Chino Book Part One Page 07

Barrio Chino is a unique place in Panama City. The Chinese population in Panama city is the largest in Latin America, and the Chinese history in Panama is fascinating and surprising to the visitor. Barrio Chino provides a rich experience in a country that prides itself upon its diversity, and the story of the Chinese in Panama is an essential thread to understand the country at the heart of global culture and trade.
Next to Barrio Chino, Casco Viejo is growing. Its restoration puts pressure on Barrio Chino to grow, and pressures leaders to invest creativity in Barrio Chino. What can be done with the area? How should it grow? What are the issues that will dictate growth?
The purpose of this document is to provide an analysis and recommendations for the planning of Barrio Chino to address the questions above. Discussion centered upon creating a design for the neighborhood, but the team feels it is too early in the process to make plans for the area. It will be important to establish relations with members of the community to create a shared vision for Barrio Chino. These mutual goals between the government and the neighborhood will enable a rehabilitation of the Barrio Chino to avoid nostalgia, address the needs of the coming generations that are leaving Barrio Chino, and Panama and challenge the community to invest in its historic place. A mutual vision will create a sense of inclusivity that will make people want to live in Barrio Chino, and it can change the perception of the area as a first step to regrowth.
An interdisciplinary team of students and faculty from Cal Poly Pomona examined Barrio Chino June of 2007, returning to Los Angles to document our study. The team used qualitative methods including archival research, community interviews and interviews with local leaders and experts. The team visited Barrio Chino during different times of the day throughout our stay. We did not enter into the area in the evenings; all information gathered about night is secondhand.
Four sections structure the analysis, following the framework used for Casco Viejo: revival of the community, revival of the economy and tourism, revival of the infrastructure and revival of the architecture. Each section begins with a summary of the analysis for that topic, and the summary ends with action items to pursue to address the research that follows in the section.
The important and immediate needs include the leaders of Barrio Chino and government representatives creating a productive working relationship. This relationship should establish the ability for these groups to create a plan addressing the social, economic, political and physical issues in Barrio Chino.
If left unaddressed, the environmental conditions in this area will impede any development. The pollution is a threat to human health and flooding will damage property investments. Improving environmental conditions will raise the value of the area, and be a demonstration of a commitment to the future of Barrio Chino.
Creating a positive socio-political environment and functioning city services and maintenance should entice private investment as Barrio Chino has unique and desirable resrouces.

Templetown Priory & Church

Templetown Priory & Church

DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLAR KNIGHTS
The destruction of the Templar order was relentlessly insisted upon by Philip the Fair, and accomplished with the reluctant co-operation of Clement V. In vain did the king strive to hide the sordidness of his purpose under the thin mask of religious zeal. At Clement's coronation, if not before, Philip brought charges against it. About the same time, in the insurrection called forth by his debasement of the coin, the king took refuge in the Templars' building at Paris. In 1307 he renewed the charges before the pope. When Clement hesitated, he proceeded to violence, and on the night of Oct. 13, 1307, he had all the members of the order in France arrested and thrown into prison, including Jacques de Molay, the grand-master. Doellinger applies to this deed the strong language that, if he were asked to pick out from the whole history of the world the accursed day, - dies nefastus, - he would be able to name none other than Oct. 13, 1307. Three days later, Philip announced he had taken this action as the defender of the faith and called upon Christian princes to follow his example. Little as the business was to Clement's taste, he was not man enough to set himself in opposition to the king, and he gradually became complaisant. The machinery of the Inquisition was called into use. The Dominicans, its chief agents, stood high in Philip's favor, and one of their number was his confessor. In 1308 the authorities of the state assented to the king's plans to bring the order to trial. The constitution of the court was provided for by Clement, the bishop of each diocese and two Franciscans and two Dominicans being associated together. A commission invested with general authority was to sit in Paris.

In the summer of 1308 the pope ordered a prosecution of the knights wherever they might be found. The charges set forth were heresy, spitting upon the cross, worshipping an idol, Bafomet - the word for Mohammed in the Provencal dialect - and also the most abominable offences against moral decency such as sodomy and kissing the posterior parts and the navel of fellow knights. The members were also accused of having meetings with the devil who appeared in the form of a black cat and of having carnal intercourse with female demons. The charges which the lawyers and Inquisitors got together numbered 127 and these the pope sent through France and to other countries as the basis of the prosecution.

Under the strain of prolonged torture, many of the unfortunate men gave assent to these charges, and more particularly to the denial of Christ and the spitting upon the cross. The Templars seem to have had no friends in high places bold enough to take their part. The king, the pope, the Dominican order, the University of Paris, the French episcopacy were against them. Many confessions once made by the victims were afterwards recalled at the stake. Many denied the charges altogether. In Paris 36 died under torture, 54 suffered there at one burning, May 10, 1310, and 8 days later 4 more. Hundreds of them perished in prison. Even the bitterest enemies acknowledged that the Templars who were put to death maintained their innocence to their dying breath.

In accordance with Clement's order, trials were had in Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and England. In England, Edward II. at first refused to apply the torture, which was never formally adopted in that land, but later, at Clement's demand, he complied. Papal inquisitors appeared. Synods in London and York declared the charges of heresy so serious that it would be impossible for the knights to clear themselves. English houses were disbanded and the members distributed among the monasteries to do penance. In Italy and Germany, the accused were, for the most part, declared innocent. In Spain and Portugal, no evidence was forthcoming of guilt and the synod of Tarragona, 1310, and other synods favored their innocence.

The last act in these hostile proceedings was opened at the Council of Vienne, called for the special purpose of taking action upon the order. The large majority of the council were in favor of giving it a new trial and a fair chance to prove its innocence. But the king was relentless. He reminded Clement that the guilt of the knights had been sufficiently proven, and insisted that the order be abolished. He appeared in person at the council, attended by a great retinue. Clement was overawed, and by virtue of his apostolic power issued his decree abolishing the Templars, March 22, 1312. Clement's reasons were that suspicions existed that the order held to heresies, that many of the Templars had confessed to heresies and other offences, that thereafter reputable persons would not enter the order, and that it was no longer necessary for the defence of the Holy Land. Directions were given for the further procedure. The guilty were to be put to death; the innocent to be supported out of the revenues of the order. With this action th

Importance of conch (shankh) as per scriptures

Importance of conch (shankh) as per scriptures

Importance of conch (shankh) as per scriptures Shankh naad

First of all let us se the importance of shankh. According to our ancient scriptuires that is Puranas, the shankh was originated during the Churning of ocean by the Deities and Lord Vishnu held it in the form of weapon. As per a holy verse which is regularly chanted during the puja ritual it is mentioned that by the command of Lord Vishnu the deities Moon, Sun and Varun are stationed at the base of the shankh, the deity Prajapati on its surface and all the places of pilgrimage like Ganga and Saraswati in its front portion. Yet another speciality of shankh is that the vibrations emanating on blowing it destroys the disease causing germs in the atmosphere. That is the reason it has a important place in Ayurved and medicine.

Effect of energy emitted from blowing of shankh
As soon as the shankh is blown the frequencies of divine energy (shakti) are emitted into atmosphere due to sound generated. These energy frequencies are seen in red colour. Along with these energy frequencies yellow circles of chaitanya are also projected in the atmosphere. You can also see the pink particles of Bliss being emitted in the atmosphere. This increases the proportion of shakti (energy), chaitanya and anand in the environment and that is why the negative energies get distressed and run away.
Thus it has become clear to us the importance of blowing shankh during puja ritual. The blowing of shankh makes the atmosphere holy and pure and conducive for the spiritual practice (sadhana) of the individual. Thus it becomes easier for an individual to receive maximum sattvik frequencies emanating from the deities.

Journey to Financial Security: Creating Wealth

Journey to Financial Security: Creating Wealth

The road to financial security presents numerous turning points, and you will learn that there may be a few detours along the way.

“Creating Wealth: Stocking up for the long haul” covers how few people have the resources to accomplish major goals, such as a down payment for a home, college education, and retirement, without long-term investments. By investing, you will be able to put the power of compounding to work for you and achieve higher rates of return than you can with savings. Risk, diversification, and asset allocation are important concepts to understand for successful investing.

Money Management International (MMI) recognizes the importance of sound financial management skills and has developed the Journey to Financial Security series of programs to serve as your road map to financial security.

I've always wanted to purchase a portrait studio lighting setup, however I found that you had to be really serious about investing a large sum of money to get one. Enter Wescott Photo Basics 503, which includes three always-on halogen lamps with umbrellas, stands and a cloth backdrop for less than $500. It even came with a DVD that includes several short videos which explain how to set up and to position the lights for the most flattering effect.

The camera was set on a tripod and the white balance was set to Tungsten to accommodate the halogen lights. The portrait was then processed in Adobe Photoshop CS4 to add the border, courtesy of the folks at PhotoRadar, and then added the gallery frame.

Technical data: the aperture was f/5.6, the exposure was 1/60th of a second, and the ISO was 800.

BTB - Rhododendron Close Up - Jenkins Arboretum

BTB - Rhododendron Close Up - Jenkins Arboretum

A close up shot of a rhododendron at Jenkins Arboretum. I shot this with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT using the EF 75-300 mm F/4-5.6 lens. I used a +1 close up filter to posion the camera more closely to the flower in order to pull the shot without uning a formal macro lens. With this combination, I was able to get the shot and pull nice bokeh with the natural light available.

This is a good example of how someone with a basic kit can invest a few dollars in set of close-up/magnifying lenses and enjoy dabbling in macro photography without breaking the bank on lighting and lenses.

Pressure compensation Device DA 284

Pressure compensation Device DA 284

Pressure differentials in enclosures with a high degree of protection are a result of internal and external temperature changes. In the case of negative pressure or partical vacuum, dust and humidity can enter the enclosure through the door seal. When the air inside the enclosure cools down, condensation may occur because the humidity cannot escape the enclosure. The easy-to-install pressure compensation device DA 284 provides compensation of pressure at a protection degree of IP66. Even with a slight overpressure, a waterproof membrane inside the plug allows the humidity to escape whilst blocking water and dirt from entering the enclosure.

I extracted the data points from Ilford's HP5+ spec sheet and calculated the exposure compensation factors for reciprocity failure. I added the data for 0.5 seconds (which is the longest exposure they cite that does not need compensation. The same chart appears in all their spec sheets.

Topping Out On The Solstice

And this is in the shade on our patio. You pause a second before sliding the door open when you see a reading like this.

The gray thing to the right is a sending unit for one of those remote thermometers, it just corroborates what this one says. They do tend to read a bit high at this time of year. Once the sun is far enough north, it shines underneath the patio roof onto the floor and heats it up, and the rising air is trapped by the roof just above this thermometer. They don't read ~that~ high though, the high today in Goodyear was 115 degrees.

At least tomorrow the sun's arc will be slightly lower and the day will be slightly shorter.

New pair of shoes

New pair of shoes

Hidden in a dark corner of your closet is what was once your favorite pair of shoes. Yes, the shoes that you wore at your graduation or wore regularly to go salsa or merengue dancing … now you remember. Buy a container of shoe polish for around a dollar. Carefully apply polish to your shoes.
If needed, guys can also replace their old shoe laces with new ones. Once again, you’re ready to shine on the dance floor.
