Dessert: Meyer Lemon Soufflé The Meyer lemon souffle was picture-perfect - as it was in texture and taste. I'm really impressed that the restaurant would be so daring as to coordinate souffles for everyone in that evening! To be sure, in some aspects, it makes dessert servicing somewhat more predictable... but making all of those souffles and timing them for each table, I can imagine, could spell disaster. The souffle was garnished with a Meyer lemon leaf. As well, little pots of cardamom creme anglaise were provided for each diner to sauce their souffle to their liking. The souffle was not overly eggy, and was ethereally light. I'm personally not a fan of cardamom, but I will admit that the creme anglaise worked magnificently with the subtle and mild citrus. One note on the creme anglaise - although I could have sworn I tasted a heavy dose of ginger in the creme anglaise, my server, after checking, reassured me that there was only cardamom. Cecelia Lucas My understanding of the Catholic faith is deeper and richer now that I am not a practicing member of the Church than it was during all those years I called the faith my own. Attending a Catholic grade school (with weekly Masses, stations of the cross during Lent, regular prayer services, and an ever-present awareness of God's love for us, "his" children) gave me a comfort and confidence I am sure I never would have received in a public school setting. During those years of the 1980's, the "Renew" movement in the Church brought guitar masses and a brand of liturgy that was more organic, dynamic, and free. I remember attending neighborhood Bible studies; families in surrounding blocks would gather in a different home every week, with the adults gathering around the Bible and discussing not its "correct" interpretation, meant to be parroted and passed on from dogma through the grapevine of the hierarchy. No -- they talked about what that text meant in their lives, how it came alive for them and had meaning in their individual, modern worlds. I remember candles and prayers, a warm feeling that all was well, God was love, and God loved me. Later years brought dynamic teen retreats, of which I could not get enough. My first was a must-do for Confirmation. But I went back, again and again, drawn by the music, life, and dynamic faith I experienced, mostly through the expression of my fellow young people and the adults who passionately served with us. That I ended up at a Catholic university was not something I had felt I needed to do. But, looking back, had I not ended up where I did, my journey of faith could never have deepened and progressed to the point it did during those years. Lord, did I put my heart and head and faith through the ringer during those years. Questions of justice, peace, gender, and life's inevitable and substantive purpose peppered every experience, academic and not, that I had. In a freshman year critical theory course, I discovered my weekly essays had unwittingly zeroed in on the topic of feminism; in choosing the readings upon which to reflect in my writing, I had again and again chosen those which allowed me to peer into and explicate my role as a woman in this world. In a sophomore year spring break trip, I found myself with world-renowned peace and non-violence activists, among whom were Phil Berrigan and Liz McAllister, throwing blood upon the Pentagon, and exploring the wisdom of Dorothy Day and the radical social teachings of Catholicism. These were teachings that seemed, to me, as if they had been swept under the rug. Why had I not been taught them before? Luminaries such as Oscar Romero, first explored in a Peace Studies course, came alive for me in experiences living and traveling in Central America, witnessing the gross social injustices which the Church's liberation theology had decried with such righteous indignation. I questioned and questioned and questioned the faith. I began to get real about my feelings, including admitting (which was hard for a "good" Catholic girl, at first) my anger at being denied the opportunity to fully serve and participate as a woman in the Church. By the time I was graduating, I had decided I was done with the Catholic Church. No more did I want to explore, delve into, burnish my faith within its confines. I wanted to see what else was out there. The Truth which I was intuitively seeking seemed to echo within its chambers -- but I was, frustratingly, not finding its substance to grasp. Almost as unwittingly as in my other steps along the faith journey, yet somehow, surely, a part of a greater plan, I stumbled upon a spiritual path of the conscious practice of Christian Mysticism. Those echoes within Catholicism of the great tradition of mysticism were embodied most fully in the luminous lives of its many saints -- Francis, John of the Cross, and Teresa of Avila chief among those. These ones had always inspired me. To find that I could be like them was almost overwhelmingly too good to be true. Even harder to believe was the presence of priests who were married and, yes, female. I could be a priest. I could fully serve. And not only that, I began to discover that Truth I had heard echoing -- only now, its resonances made life-changing, reality-transforming sense. As I learned from texts containing the great spiritual wisdom teachings of all times, spiritual realities known in the depths of Eastern and Western traditions -- but largely forgotten in the West -- I began to feel that that yearning, that longing for "something more" was finally being sated. Now the sacraments were not just outer forms. I knew and experienced their inner realities -- the science behind the spiritual expressions I was witnessing. Shapes (of things to come) This...is George. He plays rhythm guitar, harmonica, and what is essentially an electric mandolin for The London Flush. The London Flush is a great Yardbirds cover band out of Eugene. Sounds pretty limited, I know, but they put on a great show! The first time we saw them, John, the bass player, was doing a cool acoustic blues set to open the show. I'll never forget his rendition of "Love Potion No. 9." How did I get to know these folks? Well...that goes back to high school and one of my first boyfriends, the incomparable Jimmy D. I had a great group of misfit friends in school, but the greatest and some of the closest were my boys, the boys from Barnstead, a town 25 minutes south of our regional high school, tuition students because their town had no official high school of its own. (Small town NH, what can I say.) Some of the best times of my life were spent in Barnstead. My husband was a Barnstead guy, introduced to me through my Barnstead boys. One of those boys was Jimmy. We called him Jim then. Tall, skinny, long black hair in a ponytail. I always loved the tall skinny guys with dark hair. Jimmy was sweet, soft spoken, but brilliant with a quick wit and keen ear for music. Jim played drums in a metal band then, I guess we all had a metal phase. And for a while we dated. He was always sweet and darling, except when I talked about going to prom with him he about choked on his cigarette in my bedroom and said, "proms suck." That was the end of that discussion, he still thinks proms suck, FYI, though he admits maybe he should have gone with me anyway. We've discussed it recently, I was officially his first girlfriend. Should Patrick dump my ass, Jimmy is my plan B. (Haha...in seriousness, I'm very fond of his girlfriend Maranda.) We were out of touch for a number of years, Jimmy traveled about the country, grew dreadlocks down to his ass, grew a gigantic beard, learned woodworking and how to build custom cabinets, visited 46 states, followed Phish for a time I believe, and as so often happens...he landed in Eugene. I got married, lived an uneventful if not tragic life. A couple of years ago I was back in touch with my friend Amy, and we planned a weekend to Vegas. Turns out she was in touch with Jimmy, got us back in touch with each other. We stayed up all night on the phone catching up more than once. Sadly, he couldn't come to Vegas with us, but when he was in NH for a visit that summer I threw a huge party in my backyard. By 4am we were all around a campfire in the firepit, beers and perhaps other things being shared, and a spontaneous drum circle erupted which is still the cause of great mirth for some of us. Jimmy was back in my life for good, it seemed. And now on to Oregon...he and I made plans for me to come out and visit. I needed to start over, he loved it here, thought I might, too. He at the time was looking at moving to Portland to live with his girlfriend. Next thing I knew, life being what it is, instead of visiting Jimmy I was staying with Patrick. Long story short, I would have wound up in Oregon either way. But now I have two amazing men in my life here. My Patrick, and Jimmy. Jimmy has long given up the hair metal, and now can be found strumming an acoustic guitar or even playing a concertina. But he still plays drums, and wound up in this killer little band out of Eugene with four other hilarious, talented, interesting, entertaining guys. I travel to Calapooia Brewing in Albany about once a month to see them. Calapooia has yet to serve me a beer I wouldn't drink PITCHERS of, AND they have mini corn dogs and tater tots on the menu. The place ROCKS. London Flush puts on one hell of a show. And some time this summer, Patrick and I are packing the dogs in the car, driving to Eugene, visiting the Raptor Rehab Center, and then partying all night with the band, before we crash at Jimmy's and then do bbq lunch the next day at a place that serves Kool Aid in mason jars. Life here in Oregon is becoming quite excellent for me. And nights out like this past Saturday, shooting the band, seeing a friend I've known now for more than half my life (seriously, 16 years now), and amazing local beer? ROCK ON. And go see London Flush! Talented blue grass band Flat top guitar, mandolin and the lady on a the far left with a voice straight from West Virginia. Excellent Blue Grass. Some watched from the bleachers; some brought folding chairs; others sat on the park lawn under the protection of a big old cottonwood tree. Our first stop in Weiser was near the city center where a stage was set up in a grassy park, craft and food vendors, lined the south end. We roamed the fiddlers' village for quite awhile before finding our way out to the Weiser High School gym where the fiddling was was going on. We were treated to some excellent music and talent sitting under a large cottonwood tree when a little rain moved through. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ June 23 -25, 2010 My wife and I decided to attend the annual fiddlers’ contest in Weiser, Idaho. In the spirit of the “journey” can many times be as enjoyable or more than the “destination”, we decided to take a looping “road trip” to and from the Weiser fiddler’s festival. Day one we traveled “back roads” to Wendover campground along the Lochsa River on Lolo Pass (the Idaho side). We camped in the back of our pickup truck and really enjoyed our stay. A nice camp host (Bill from Lewiston, Idaho), dropped by and donated a few dry white pine firewood logs to our camp. We returned the nice gesture by dropping some “camp” raspberry and chocolate muffins by for them. Nice people. Day two we left camp early and backtracked a bit to the trailhead for some nice hot springs. We arrived early and crossed the Lochsa on the pack trail bridge and took the quiet lovely hike up Warm Springs Creek to two large hot springs pool (1.5 mile hike). We passed the hotter lower pool and settled into the upper “bath warm” clear, sandy bottom hot springs pool. A couple of deer, visiting the area for the minerals in the soil in the area, were our only company. After our relaxing hot springs soak we hiked out, drove over Lolo Pass. We drove the Salmon, Challis, Stanley, Lowman route and finished the day by getting a cabin for the night. Day three we drove down the Payette River drainage and over to Weiser, Idaho. We really had a lot of fun at the fiddlers’ festival. We walked, watched blue grass, country singers, and then out to the Weiser High School gym to watch the Grand National Round 2 competition. We got to see 18 of some of the best fiddlers you would ever want to hear play. One of the best, who has won the event several times and I had seen perform on a PBS television show, was a finalist as was his sister. We watched all 18 compete and my wife enjoyed a bowl of strawberries they were selling at the concession stand at the high school. I LOVE fiddle music and this was the first time I had attended the Weiser competition. I didn’t know quite what to expect, but it was very “audience friendly”. The judges sit in a different room so they don’t see the fiddlers they are judging, nor do they know the name of the fiddler. After the round 2 competition we watched some of the “young adult” competition, and then we returned to the city center fiddlers’ village venue, to eat a “light” dinner (I went for a BBQ pork sandwich and baked beans). We left Weiser and crossed below the Brownlee dam, intending to drive up Forest Service road 59 and camp on the upper Imnaha River and drive home via Joseph, Oregon the next day. Driving up Pine Creek in the direction of Halfway, Oregon we could see the evidence of a massive flash flood in the area, so when we arrived FR 59 and saw the “road closed” sign, we weren’t completely shocked. When we stopped for a short while in Halfway, Oregon a lady showed me aerial photos of the six or so major road washouts caused by the flooding in the area this year. It might take them awhile to open the road again. Accepting the “change in plans” we drove to Baker City, got on the interstate and headed on home. Fun times…once again. French-Italian singer, jazz musician and actor Nino Ferrer (1934 - 1998) was an immensely popular pop star during the second half of the 1960’s. L'homme a tout faire (The Jack of all Trades) also appeared in seven films. Nino Ferrer was born Nino Agostino Arturo Maria Ferrari in Genoa, Italy, in 1934. He had an Italian father and a French mother. A considerable part of his preteen years was spent under the stress of World War II, but Nino himself later declared having had a pleasant childhood in a bourgeois, art-loving family. His father worked as an engineer in a nickel mine in New Caledonia. On holiday in France in 1939, Nino and his mother were unable to leave Europe because of the World War II. While his father carried on working in New Caledonia, they spent difficult years stuck and penniless in Italy, where Nino’s mother was considered the wife of an enemy. In 1947, the family, re-united and moved to France. Nino was sent to the best colleges in Paris and earned a degree in ethnology and prehistoric archaeology. As a student, much of his free time was spent on archaeological digs and his first job was at the Musee de l'Homme with Andre Leroi-Gourhan. Alongside his passion for history, he developed numerous other interests. He became a keen painter, and remained so until his death. Above all, he learned to play several instruments (piano, guitar, clarinet, trombone and trumpet) and composed, wrote lyrics and became a fervent jazz lover. When he finished his studies, his grandmother offered him a trip to New Caledonia, a gift he took advantage of by going round the world on a cargo ship. On his return to Paris, he tried several jobs. Starting out as a hired hand in the capital's jazz circles, he was employed by bandleader Richard Bennett and later worked for American singer Nancy Holloway. He also continued to write gospel-inspired songs which received only refusals from most of the record companies. Hearing Otis Redding and Sam Cooke for the first time was a musical revelation and transformed his writing style. Although already spotted by the Barclay record label, he had to wait until 1963 to record his first release, Pour oublier qu’on s’est aime. He was 29, whereas most of the young stars of the time were hardly 20. It was a four-track EP, written in a fairly classical vein, and did not sell well in France. However, one of the tracks, C'est Irreparable, was a hit in some European countries, in Japan and even in the Middle East. The song was picked up by Italian Mina as Un anno d'amore, hitting #1 of the Italian singles chart. Having left Barclay for a small label, Bel Air, Nino Ferrer was still unknown in France. In 1964, he started a gospel group, Reverend Nino and the Jubilees, but it broke up before recording anything worth being released. He had small parts in two policiers starring hard-boiled Eddie Constantine, Laissez tirer les tireurs/Let the Marksman Fire (1964, Guy Lefranc) and Ces dames s'en melent/These ladies get involved in it (1965, Raoul Andre), and he also went on to bring out several solo singles, but all without any success. After so many lean years, Nino Ferrer’s big break came unexpectedly in 1965 when he returned to Barclay, who gave him the chance to record his new material. After a few unsuccessful trials, a new artistic director, Richard Bennett, gave Nino free rein to record his compositions as he wanted. And so Nino Ferrer recorded Mirza, an effective cocktail of rhythm ‘n’ blues and caustic lyrics. The song was immediately a huge hit. His record company called for more songs in the same vein. His records sold very well and overnight the he became an idol. Now the zany singer in vogue, he followed Mirza up with Les Cornichons and Oh! He! Hein! Bon. Although he was now very popular, his success was founded on material with which he never felt really comfortable. Nevertheless, hit followed hit and he lived his new life as a star at breakneck rhythm. In 1966, he gave 195 live performances and made nearly thirty TV appearances. As an actor he appeared in the TV film Palpitations (1966, Marcel Moussy). He soon grew tired of his deliberately blase and provocative seducer image of which people compared to Jacques Dutronc. In 1966 he released Le Telefon, another hit to which people are still dancing years later. He left Paris for Italy where, at the same time, his song Je veux etre noir, was a success of an entirely different kind. Smothered by his own success, Nino stayed about three years in Italy, from 1967 to 1970. In France, his releases continued to sell well. His lyrics became increasingly iconoclastic, even politicized, while remaining just as sarcastic or even cynical. In 1967, he brought out Mao et Moa and Mon copain Bismarck and in 1968, le Roi d’Angleterre, with biting lyrics echoing his irritation with show business and society in general. Indianapolis Museum of Art: Highlights of the Collection (2005) Norman Rockwell's Love Song, which was reproduced as an illustration in the December 1926 issue of Ladies Home Journal, presents one of this popular artist's major themes: youth contrasted with old age. A young girl listens wistfully as two elderly men play the flute and the clarinet. Leaning against the metronome is a music sheet indicating the tune's-and the painting's-title, "The Love Song." Rockwell, an avid collector of antique maps, added an old map to the scene, enhancing its quaint setting. Rockwell was born in New York City and trained at the Chase School of Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League. In 1910, he set up a studio in New Rochelle, New York, the home of such famous illustrators as J.C. Leyendecker and his brother Frank, and Howard Chandler Christy. Rockwell was a young man of thirty-two when he was commissioned to paint The Love Song, yet he had already been designing cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post for a decade. Between 1916 and 1961, Rockwell illustrated more than three hundred covers for that magazine alone. He produced some of the most recognizable images in American art, always treating his subjects-"average" Americans in everyday situations-with warmth and humor. In his later years, Rockwell became more political. His 1965 illustration The Problem We All Live With dealt with segregated education in the United States. Maybe . . . Scale 1 This old scale has been sitting around our house for years. I think my wife got it as a wedding present some 12 years ago. There's not telling how old it really is. We always liked the rust patina and thought it would be a good subject to photograph, but have never gotten around to it before. Tonight I had to take something of value. It has been about a week and a half since I've taken anything of note. For this shot, I had one light on level with the face of the scale and to the right of the image. I had my handy-dandy black backdrop behind and underexposed. Only post-processing in Photoshop was an adjustment layer for contrast, set to 45% opacity (no adjustment in the dialog box) and resizing. Clarinet Player Merridith Huffty Providing for the formal education of its youth has been important to the citizens of Nacogdoches since the first European settlers arrived in the area. Beginning during the Spanish Colonial period, the recorded history of the town is filled with references about the need for and the establishment of schools. It was not until June 10, 1903, however, that the Nacogdoches Independent School District and Nacogdoches High School had their beginnings. Nacogdoches - the oldest town in Texas - is named for the Caddo family of Indians who once lived in the area. There is a legend that tells of an old Caddo chief who lived near the Sabine River and had twin sons. When the sons grew to manhood and were ready to become leaders of their own tribes, the father sent one brother three days eastward toward the rising sun. The other brother was sent three days toward the setting sun. The twin who settled three days toward the setting sun was Nacogdoches. The other brother, Natchitoches, settled three days to the east in Louisiana. The two brothers remained friendly and the road between the two communities was well traveled. This road became a trade route and the eastern end of the El Camino Real. Nacogdoches remained a Caddo Indian settlement until 1716 when Spain established a mission here, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe de los Nacogdoches. That was the first European activity in the area, but a mission was not a town - it was a church. The "town" of Nacogdoches got started after Spaniards decided that the French were no longer a threat and maintaining the mission was too costly. So, in 1772 they ordered all settlers in the area to move to San Antonio. Some were eager to escape the wilderness, but others had to be forced from their homes by soldiers. Antonio Gil Y'Barbo, a prominent Spanish trader, emerged as the leader of the settlers, and in the spring of 1779, he led a group back to Nacogdoches. Later that summer, Nacogdoches received designation from Mexico as a pueblo, or town, thereby making it the first "town" in Texas. Y'Barbo was named Lt. Governor of the new town and he established the rules and laws under which the city was governed. He laid out streets with the intersecting El Camino Real and El Calle del Norte as his central point. On the main thoroughfare he built a stone house for use in his trading business. The house, or Old Stone Fort as it's called today, became a gateway from the United States to the vast Texas frontier. But Nacogdoches' role in Texas history was just beginning. Over the next four decades, Nacogdoches and the Old Stone Fort became the site of three failed attempts to establish a Republic of Texas - the Magee-Gutierrez (1812), Long (1819) and Fredonia (1826) rebellions. Thus, nine flags have flown over Nacogdoches as opposed to the six that have flown over Texas. Today, Nacogdoches is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas. People come here to discover the town's historic past and to enjoy its slow-paced and relaxing atmosphere.
