BEER FRIDGES

109. Monday 12th September

Glacier Bay. Or somewhere thereabouts. I was up on deck and happened to see another cruise ship in the distance.

I went around with one of the fitters today, and welded stuff on an ice machine. It was pretty cool, and nice to be able to fix something and know exactly what was going on, plus the principle behind it. It's basically a big fridge, and I loved doing refrigeration at university.

Meng, the fitter who I was with, took me up to a secret room behind the huge 'movies under the stars' screen, and I finally realised where the mini golf course was. It's very pretty, I'll probably take a picture of it at some point.

There was a dead bird in a vent space, which was going to be my picture for today, but then I took this picture off-handedly and it turned out to be really pretty. The dead bird made me sad. We had a lot of them fly in to various parts of the ship and they came with us to the next port, but unfortunately this little fellow got caught in a ventilation fan or something :(

The UBC Thunderbird Arena or the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre actually has three hockey arenas. This Olympic venue is located at the University Endowment Lands and is just outside the city limits of Vancouver.It was a LEED Silver building for its efficient use of energy. Heat extracted from ice refrigeration is reused in heating the building and to provide hot water. The Thunderbird Sports Centre can also be booked for soncerts. In a concert configuration, floors spaces can be used to accommodate an additional 2,000 people. ZZ Top will be the first musical acts post-Games on June 05, 2010. [April 2010 Photo by Ray Van Eng]
