HINGEFINKLE'S LOGBOOK (Tenth instalment)
The Perfect Pocket-Watch
“Hum,” I said, as Snowdrop snorted with displeasure and plodded back down the pathway, with Agrimony and King Math in the midst of a heated argument in the cart. With the stem of my pipe, I pointed out Petribeddroch on the map. “Well, here we are. Where would you like to go next, Gladys - or shall I spin the alidade to decide?”
“Nay, ‘Ingefinkle,” said Gladys Sparkbright, leaning on a stone statue of a tinker, squinting at the sun and adjusting the knitting needles in her hair. “Ah’ve been thinkin’. Let’s go an’ visit th’ Spodleian Library. It oughter be a week’r two sou’east fro’ ere, if t’Goblins ‘ave left it standin’.”
And at that moment, my dear little Alias, I knew that I could not have made a sounder choice of travelling companion. Ah! The Spodleian Library! It is the most - some might say the only - civilised place east of the Marches of the Elf Lords; not quite Heaven on Earth, perhaps (for that honorific title must surely be reserved for the celebrated Town of Books on the edge of the Black Hills, which, quite apart from its virtue of being on the right side of the border, has the advantage over the Spodleian because its books can be bought - as you may confirm, dear boy, by an examination of my bookshelves) - not quite Heaven on Earth, as I think I said before, but nonetheless a veritable treasure-trove, a subterranean labyrinth packed with parchments and manuscripts illuminated by some of the most accomplished scribes in the world. Oh, dear, sensible Gladys! Discerning Gladys! Intelligent Gladys! I gazed at her, my eyes filled with awe and delight, and as I looked at her disordered clothes, her threadbare cardigan with bulging pockets, her eminently practical shoes, and her convex-lensed half-moon glasses, I had cause once again to lament the passing of the Gnomes from our land, and I cursed the name of Scabpicker with renewed vigour. And I knew that this genius, this little inventive dynamo, creator of explosive magic, the microscope, the astrolabe and the giant mousetrap, was also lost to our little village. For this was more than an expedition for Gladys; it was a quest for a new home. And for those who remained behind, it was the end of an era.
And so, without another word, we turned our faces towards the west, and walked across the grassy plain, the frozen ground crunching beneath our feet, for there was no path. We walked for days, camping in a little tent which Gladys carried in her backpack, and at last the scorched trees and scattered skeletons told us that we had reached the Marches of the Elf Lords. In the distance there loomed the empty hulk of an Elvish castle; we walked towards it and wept for sorrow, for all was burnt inside. In the castle keep, the wooden roof had collapsed, baring the great stone staircases and the mosaic floors to the elements. Icicles lined the doorways, and ferns sprouted from the lintels; the stones and mortar were cracked and crazed from excess of heat. On the floor there lay goblets of Elvish glass, partly melted by the breath of the fire dragons, and once-beautiful jewelry, charred and encrusted with verdigris. There were rusted weapons, too, and spent bolts from Goblin crossbows, amid the clutter of broken furniture and collapsed beams covered with wood-ear fungi. Bats flitted about the battlements like fragments of burnt parchment on the wind, and the moss on the paving-stones was filled with glistening crystals of ice.
We would have hurried away from that desolate place, but as we picked our way through the heat-blistered rubble, dark clouds gathered in the sky above us, lightning threw the blackened battlements into unnatural prominence, and great drops of rain-water spattered against the stones. And so we were compelled to spend the night there, and I do not think, my dear little Alias, that I have ever had a worse night of wakefulness - not even when, on a journey I have yet to chronicle, a dreaded Yena came out of the sepulchre to terrorise a whole town in his (or her - it is so hard to be sure) unending hunt for human flesh. Indeed, on that night, there was something in the wind which was very like the howling of the Yena himself; something almost human, a perverse and miserific moaning which excited at once the deepest emotions of pity and of fear. We crept into the ruined cellars, huddled together for warmth, and gazed through gaping holes in the roof at a tumultuous sky rent by lightning. And then, as quickly as the storm had come, it abated, and presently, stars were visible through the breaches. Gladys picked up her astrolabe and scurried outside, and, since any thought of sleep had been chased from my mind, I followed her.
“Aye,” said Gladys as I reached her side, “Ah make Capella ter be in th’ twenty-sixth degree, an’ Vega i’th’ fifty-third. Must be abaht one o’clock in th’ mornin’.”

Label:
William Buckland (1734-1774), an English-trained builder active in eastern Virginia and Maryland during the third quarter of the eighteenth century, was responsible for some of the colonial Chesapeake's most aspiring architectural productions and cabinet wares. Among the latter is this cherry sideboard table made during the 1760s for the Tayloe family of Mount Airy in Richmond County, Virginia. With its fully carved console legs, gadrooned rails, and marble top, this remarkably well-preserved object illustrates both Buckland's considerable artistic vision and the skill of his employees. It also alludes to Buckland's penchant for aesthetically integrated architectural schemes.
Born in Oxfordshire, Buckland was apprenticed in 1748 to his uncle, London joiner James Buckland. The young artisan completed his training in 1755 and soon signed an indenture with Virginian Thomson Mason. In return for passage to America and a modest annual salary, Buckland would serve Mason or his agent for four years "in the Employment of a Carpenter &. Joiner." In fact, Mason had secured Buckland's services on behalf of his older brother, George (1725-1792), a rising Fairfax County planter and politician. Then in the midst of building Gunston Hall, a brick house on the Potomac River, the elder Mason required the services of a skilled carver and joiner. Like thousands of other British artisans, Buckland undoubtedly accepted the indenture hoping to find better career opportunities in the colonies.
When Buckland arrived in Virginia, the masonry shell of Gunston Hall was apparently complete and ready for its joined components. Buckland and his crew designed and executed woodwork that was surprisingly elaborate and unusual for its time and place. They added a porch in the form of an engaged octagon closely resembling a Gothic garden temple in William Pain's BUILDER'S COMPANION AND WORKMAN'S GENERAL ASSISTAN (1758). This whimsical portico with Gothic arches and a now missing ornamental finial has no known parallels in contemporary American work. Buckland created equally interesting spaces inside the house, including a templelike central passage with a prominent Doric entablature supported by twelve fluted pilasters. In the parlor, the artisans installed woodwork that blends classical and naturalistic carved ornament with Palladian symmetry. The dining room was executed in the exotic Chinese taste, complete with pagodalike moldings on door and window surrounds. One can only imagine the surprised reactions of Mason's guests on their first view of his singular new house.
Buckland's work at Gunston Hall was nearly complete by 1759 when Mason endorsed the back of the Englishman's indenture with a highly complimentary recommendation, calling him "a complete Master of the Carpenter's &. Joiners Business both in Theory &. Practice." Two years later, the artisan moved his crew to Richmond County on the lower Rappahannock River where he evidently was commissioned to complete the interior woodwork of Mount Airy, the "elegant Seat" of John (1721-1779) and Rebecca Plater Tayloe.

Former New York Life Insurance Building
Civic Center, Manhattan
The home office of the New York Life Insurance Company organized in 1841 and one of the oldest life insurance companies in America. was constructed between 1894 and 1898. A monumental freestanding skyscraper in
the neo-Italian Renaissance style, it was designed by Stephen D. Hatch and McKim. Mead & White. The design history is extremely interesting. and somewhat complicated. In a sense, the building was constructed backwards. The eastern rear section designed by Hatch was originally intended to harmonize with the old New York Life building of 1868-70, then located at the western end of the block. When Hatch suddenly died. the commission was turned over to McKim, Mead & White and under their supervision the project took on new dimensions; the old building was demolished and the new building, now culminating in a palazzo-like tower on Broadway, was carried to completion. Thus two separate campaigns resulted in the unified and impressive structure we see today.
By early 1893, New York Life had decided to expand its headquarters. The old building by Thomas occupied approximately half of the trapezoidal block bounded by Broadway, Leonard, Elm (now Lafayette) streets, and Catharine Lane.
The company, having gradually amassed all the property of the block, proceeded to organize a limited competition, inviting five prominent architectural firms to participate. The extension was to be twelve stories tall, and
was to harmonize with the existing marble building, although the facade on Catharine Lane was to be of cheaper light brick.
The invited architects, Stephen D. Hatch, McKim, Mead & White, George B. Post, and Babb, Cook & Willard, all New York firms, and Daniel H. Burnham of Chicago, were each to be awarded $ 500 and their plans returned in the event they were not chosen. There was some debate concerning commission rates for the winner. By the 1890s a 5% commission was considered standard, but New York Life was reluctant to include this stipulation in its competition specifications. In an inter-office memo, William Mead advised his partner Stanford White:
Dear Stanny,
If Mr. Brown [of New York Life] comes to see us about a lower commission than 5%, don't agree to it under any conditions. We have a written agreement between all the competing architects except Hatch not to accept less than
5%.... Mr. Brown is a new man in the company and probably would like to be smart. Don't let him get ahead of us. We must stand by our record.
Mead
Hatch, a less successful and more conservative architect than Mead or White, may have held out either from conviction or from eagerness to be awarded the work; whether the building committee genuinely preferred his design
or were swayed luL-l:!is fees--he apparently agreed to a 3 1/2% commission 15, Hatch was selected in August 1893. Building commenced in May of the following year, but only three months later Hatch died suddenly at the age of fifty-five.
At that point, with plans and specifications completed, contracts awarded, and construction underway, New York Life apparently had two options, Work could continue under the supervision of Hatch's office, now directed by
the unknown William McCabe (who was to head the successor firm of McCabe & Wilke), or the project could be handed over to another firm. New York Life reached a compromise so Dution. McCabe was to be retained as General
Superintendent, while McKim, Mead & White, known to New York Life from the earlier western commissions, was engaged to complete the building. Hatch's drawings were sent by McCabe to McKim, Mead & White's offices and
construction was completed in late May 1896. 16 McKim, Mead & White had agreed to supervise the work as planned but certain modifications, especially to the interior of the building were incorporated.
Since Hatch's contribution to the building has been virtually overlooked, it seems worthwhile to consider the sites appearance in tile Spring of 1896: The original, mansard-roofed Italianate structure, with which the Hatch extension had been planned to harmonize, still stood. The massive extension, like its progenitor, was constructed in white marble, cornice heights had been adjusted to conform with those of the older building, and the fenestration with paired arched windows also echoed the older design. The scaling of Hatch's skyscraper--most significantly on the side elevations--seem to have been dictated by the smaller building. resulting in the rather staccato effect of the window bays (this was also to effect McKim, Mead & White's treatment of the side elevations). Hatch had also been forced to design a truncated western elevation rising midblock above the older building.
Even while the extension was under construction, New York Life apparently became convinced that the result would not be an aesthetic success, The company decided on a drastic change of course, and it was decided to

Colorado Springs, CO DeGraff Building
From the city's website:
The DeGraff building is one of the few remaining masonry commercial buildings that date from the Cripple Creek boom days. Constructed by David DeGraff, a veteran of the California gold rush, who owned the entire block face, this building was located in the middle of the block. The first floor contained retail shops and office tenants occupied the upper floors. Following World War II, the building was converted into apartments, then was transformed back to office space in 1967. The curved parapet at the top of the facade was removed, and a rock aggregate veneer was applied to the front. In 1982, the veneer was stripped, the parapet was recreated and the detailing was reformed. Designed by the local firm of Barber and Hastings.
The DeGraff Building is on the National Register #83001293.

Jardine's Victoria Mill,Draycott, Derbyshire
VICTORIA MILL, DRAYCOTT AND CHURCH WILNE, DERBYSHIRE
Grade: II
Date Listed: 02/05/1986
NGR: SK4381034222
Tenement lace factory, now light industrial works. Erected between 1888 and 1907, with partial rebuilding after a fire in 1902. Built by E Terah Hooley, a wealthy local industrialist, and finished by Ernest Jardine. Red brick with blue and yellow brick and stone dressings. Slate roofs with numerous stone coped gables on moulded kneelers, plus moulded brick cornice. Four storeys and 57 bays. Main elevation of Derby Road has polished granite plinth, rock faced stone ground floor, red brick with blue brick and stone bands to upper floors and a moulded and dentilled stone cornice. Five bay facade with advanced central bay topped by square tower. Ground floor has a
large semi-circular headed doorcase with raised keystone and a pulvinated frieze and open swan-necked pediment over. Double panelled doors with fanlight, below. To either side there are pairs of semi-circular headed windows with rock faced stone voussoirs, and flush stone bands at sill level. Above there are pairs of iron casement windows under carved lintels with lozenge design, to either side of round central window with large keyblocks. Above again, five similar iron windows under carved
lintels with zig-zag design, and five more iron windows under moulded lintels above. Central tower above has a deep base inscribed '1906. JARDINE', with clockfaces to each side over, flanked by nookshafts to each corner supporting a bracketed cornice which curves up over the clockfaces. Ogival fish-scale tiled copper roof to top of tower with vented frieze below. East elevation has 57 segment headed iron casement windows below yellow brick heads to ground, first and second floors, each with stepped pilaster buttress to sides. Top floor has 57 similar flat headed iron windows below moulded stone lintels. West elevation is similar except for the addition of four full height bow fronted staircase turrets with loading doors to all floors to sides and small segment headed stair windows to front. Interior has wooden floors supported on iron columns. Steam engine with rope drive to all floors removed c1958. Chimney and outside lavatories also demolished.
Reputedly the largest lace factory in the world.
Dublin, Co Dublin - Ireland
Roof-line of industrial buildings.
Now known as the Storehouse (the Guinness Visitor Centre), for many years this building was under threat of demolition, lying empty and disused. Ironically, only the cost of demolition saved it. The building is reputedly the earliest steel framed multi-storey building in Britain and Ireland and is a magnificent structure with massive brickwork and detailing. It was built in 1904 as the Fermentation House for the brewery. In plan the building was almost square with the steel structure allowing light wells to illuminate the ground floor. Unusually for a steel framed building, the steelwork is exposed, neither clad in concrete as was the norm in Europe or in terracotta or plaster as was the norm in similar Chicago buildings.
Perched on top is the new Gravity Bar by RKD Architects which has floor to ceiling glazing almost the entire way around and a magnificent view of the city.
The interior of the Storehouse (as it is now known) is impressive. The sheer scale of the original buildings engineering has been enhanced by the renovations. During this a new atrium, shaped like a pint glass was cut through the floors of the building leaving the original steelwork exposed. This space erupts through the roof to the new Gravity Bar perched on top of the building. The space is crisscrossed by escalators to take visitors to the next level. The Gravity Bar has fabulous un-interupted views of Dublin.
The interior of the building was finished in white glazed bricks and these bricks were also used on the undersides of the floors which where constructed on concrete jackarches clad with the bricks.

Ode to Detroit. What is was, what it is, and what is could be!.
Postcards, clockwise: Giant Garland Stove. This is carved of hardwood and painted. It was displayed at the 1893 Columbian Exposition. It is still around. When I was a kid it was parked at the entry to Detroit's island park, Belle Isle.
Hotel Pontchartrain From the reverse side of an old postcard: "The Hotel Pontchartrain Detroit's largest and best hotel, is beautiuflly situated on the Campus. It is fifteen stories high with three stories underground. This hotel was opened to the public in October 1907 and is strictly fireproof. It is a marvel of convenience, the underground portion being most important for the comfort of the guests. Over five million pounds of steel were used in its construction". The distinctive mansard roof portion containing 5 floors was added when the hotel wasn't even a decade old. In 1920, the Hotel Pontchartrain was demolished to make way for the National Bank Building, a structure that has a nearly identical footprint, but contains only offices, not hotel rooms.
The band shell and pond, Belle Isle. No canoes for rent these days. There is a different bandshell and an Eero Saarinen designed building, the Flynn Pavilion, which may be rented for special events. You can also rent a paddle boat shaped like a swan.
