The house is a beautiful Queen Anne style residence, with its expansive porch and grand turret and be prepared to take a small step back into time. As you stroll up the wooden walkway to the front door, you begin to see what life was like at the turn of the century. The home was designed by architect Wesley Arnold and built around 1890 for Ernest Hall, Hemingway's maternal grandfather, maintains many of its original features that even Ernest would find familiar. Hemingway's Birthplace is a good place to begin to explore the roots of the author's life and art. Here Ernest was born in a second floor bedroom on July 21, 1899. This Queen Anne house, built by his maternal grandparents and recently restored, is as it was when Ernest lived there. Young Ernest spent his first six years in these grand rooms rich with Victorian decor. On the first floor, Hemingway joined his family in Grandfather Abba's Bible readings and prayers. His mother, Grace Hall Hemingway, gave music lessons in the parlor. The top floor of the tower was a mini-museum, where Ernest's father, Dr. Clarence Hemingway, kept his wildlife specimens. Grace's uncle, Tyley Hancock, who roomed on the second floor, had traveled widely. Ernest listened avidly to his colorful tales, and acted out poems and stories from the family's well-stocked library. When Ernest was five, he watched Abba die, and with him a strong link to the Victorian Age. The family then left this house of ancestral echoes for a Prairie-style house, more streamlined like the new century-and Ernest's writing to come. Gidleigh Park Set deep in the wilderness of Dartmoor National Park, Gidleigh Park is not an easy hotel to find until you stumble across the signpost putting you onto the right road. The intrepid will be rewarded, however, at first gaze upon this Tudor-style manor built in the 1920s.The quintessential country house hotel, Gidleigh Park has been masterfully run since 1977 by two Americans, Kay and Paul Henderson. Its pristine white exterior, wooden beams and mullioned windows exude elegant simplicity and attention to detail. Upon entering the hall you will immediately notice the homey smell of wood-smoke wafting from the fireplace and go on to find that all the public rooms are enormous, inviting, and beautifully panelled.An arrangement of fresh flowers and bowl of fruit are waiting in each bedroom, where the decor is in exquisite taste. Wallpaper of painted flowers, large, generously padded armchairs, antique furniture and luxurious bathrooms combine to create a mood of true British gentility.Outside, taking the air, spying on wildlife and striding out over the romantically bleak Devon landscape are the orders of the day; they certainly work up an appetite. Speaking of which, you will discover that the restaurant offers excellent French cuisine and a number of first-class wines, notably from California.A truly remarkable hotel.
