CHAIN MOTEL. DAY NIGHT HOTEL
Chain Motel
- connect or arrange into a chain by linking
- A connected flexible series of metal links used for fastening or securing objects and pulling or supporting loads
- Such a series of links, or a set of them, used to confine a prisoner
- (chemistry) a series of linked atoms (generally in an organic molecule)
- Such a series of links worn as a decoration; a necklace
- a series of things depending on each other as if linked together; "the chain of command"; "a complicated concatenation of circumstances"
- a motor hotel
- A motel is a hotel designed for motorists, and usually has a parking area for motor vehicles. They are common in the United States.
- Motel is the debut album by the Mexican soul-rock band, of the same name. The album was released in March 28, 2006, in Mexico, their homeland. And later, after four months, the album was released in countries like Guatemala, Venezuela, Chile, and the United States.
- A roadside hotel designed primarily for motorists, typically having the rooms arranged in a low building with parking directly outside
BLUE JAY MOTEL
?Prior to the opening of Interstate 81, U. S. Route 11 was the main north-south highway through the great valley of Virginia. Stretching some 350-mile from West Virginia to Tennessee, Route 11 was home to some of Virginia’s best roadside attractions, including Natural Bridge, and the caverns of the Shenandoah Valley. Also before the interstate, Route 11 featured many tourist motel and motor courts as they were called back then. These family owned motels provided motorist with basic clean accommodations for the night, while touting such modern amenities as “color TV” and “Air Conditioning.” Most of these family run motels were either rendered obsolete when the Interstates passed them by or were swallowed up by the chain motels. One of these old tourist motels is still in business on Route 11 west of Salem, Virginia. The Blue Jay Motel has been in business for well over 50-years and still welcomes guests who find their way off of Interstate 81 to visit nearby Dixie Caverns. The Blue Jay Motel Sign still stands at the entrance, but is fast falling into disrepair. Until recently the sign still worked at night but during the last year or so it has stopped working. Hopefully, business will improve and the owners can renovate and repair this icon of an earlier time.
Town House Motel
If you're an afficianado of old mid-20th century motels of the western US, West Picacho Ave in Las Cruces is a museum still worth visiting.
The Town House Motel is one of the exhibits. What makes it special is that it is among the few motels along this strip that still have their original wacky signs. The Town House's marquee, ellipses, and golf-ball-on-a-tee-light are all still intact. In contrast, most of the other motels on W. Picacho have gone through changes of ownership which has resulted in changes to the names of the establishments and their respective signs.
The early chain motels were early victims as the strip was isolated by the arrival of I-25 and I-10. Las Cruces' first Holiday Inn, just a block further down from this location here, is now the "Western Inn." The old Great Sign is long gone, of course. The old Motel 6, literally behind me when taking this picture, is the "Economy Inn." The Ramada Inn that was across the street with its massive sign showing an innkeeper holding a broad banner has a much smaller flourescent sign with some similarly forgettable name.

6:30pm. Getting chilly on the deck of M's room at the Inn. On another deck a man sits with one foot up on a chair, knee bent, holding an open book in his lap. He doesn't turn the pages. The image is so inviting that I take out my notebook.
Nothing better than just sitting out in your senses with an open book or notebook in your lap.
M. asks me almost immediately, "what are you going to do?"
Like, how many sentences are you going to write, how many words. She gets up, like, if you're going to pick up your pen I'm going inside. "None", of course, is the only appropriate answer to this conscious-making scrutiny of my otherwise organic as the weather activity. What am I going to do? Nothing! Whether or not I write, it is nothing.
I don't know if I will write any sentences. Or one sentence. Or even a word. Or several. Ever.
This is what I write.

Leslie, his roommate's girl. The Bronc let her tutor him off probabtio - and right into bed.
Paige, wealthy young co-ed. The Bronc showed her that in sex as in atheletics, all that counted was the score.
To the Bronc they were all women and they all could be had. He came, he saw, he conquered - except in one case. Her name was Doris Jane. She was as willful as the Bronc but in a different way. It took an orgiastic brawl to convince him she could not be had except on her own terms.

E&O Hotel,Penang, Malaysia
The Eastern & Oriental Hotel (popularly known as the E. & O.) is a colonial-style hotel in Penang that was established in 1885 by the Armenian Sarkies Brothers. The sea-fronting hotel is known for its luxurious accommodation and restaurants. The address is at 10 Lebuh Farquhar.
The Eastern Hotel was founded by the brothers in 1884. Within one year, the hotel had prospered and gained so much popularity that the brothers established another hotel, the Oriental Hotel in 1885, leading to the merging of both hotels to form the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in 1885. The success of the hotel led the brothers to establish a sister hotel, the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, 2 years later.
After World War II, the hotel went through a period of decline and in 1996, it was closed down. After major restoration works to restore the hotel back to its former grandeur under its new owner, The E & O Group, the hotel was reopened to the public in 2001.

2007 STELLA DEEDEE IN FRONT OF HOUSE IN MARSALA
The Florida homes came about in an interesting way. I was at the airport going to Florida in 2005. I bumped into my friend, Edgar. I knew that Edgar lived in Naples and commuted to Cleveland for business once a week. He and his wife had a beautiful home in Naples. Just in passing, he gave me the names of some people to talk to down there since I was interested in real estate. The Naples real estate market was still pretty fluid and being a buyer’s market you could get some pretty good deals.
I couldn’t wait to get off the plane. I called around for some information about the lead Edgar gave me on a new development called Horse Creek Estates. I found the address and went directly to the president’s office.
As usual, the secretary gave me the once over and reluctantly agreed to let me see Alan Schiffman. Alan was pleased to meet me. He probably thought to himself that here comes the gravy train with blond hair and a heavy Romanian accent. Wrong. Just as wrong as all the dealmakers I had met before him.
Alan and I stayed in negotiations for about three weeks. By the time the deal was sealed, I had five lots at Horse Creek Estates. The best part is that I got them for the price of three lots. These lots had luxury homes ready to be built on them.
The Southern lawyers from Arkansas had just given me my money back from the hotel and I had a very short time to reinvest the money in real estate so that I would not pay capital gains taxes.
I eventually sold three of the lots for a good profit and built two homes on the remaining two lots. We loved going to Naples and staying at the Ritz Carlton. I found out that the Ritz properties were selling lots for homes right on the hotel’s golf course. I knew I wanted to buy a lot or two. I went to talk to the people at WCI sales office and I wanted to buy a lot. I went to see a builder and I said that I wanted a house on the Tiboran lot. The architect was from the Ohio area and he gave me a very good price. The WCI people told me that this house was going to cost me $2.4 million. I went back to the sales office. They wanted $725,000 for each house. I told them that I wanted two lots and was willing to pay $675,000 for each house.
They were offended and told me that WCI does not bargain. I told them that they have to start bargaining now.Add a captionThe Florida homes came about in an interesting way. 365-2009-Day 52: Seriously?
Day 52: Travel Day
***
After leaving the hotel we went for breakfast at a lovely cafe (see April's photos), went to the tourist trap of Florida Street for some shopping where I fell for the first time in months, in front of all the tourists and vendors - isn't life lovely! and then we were off to the Airport for a short flight to Santiago for a 5 and a half hour layover. Our plan was to leave the airport for dinner - see Santiago briefly AND get another passport stamp - two birds with one stone right? But there is a tax of $150 to leave the airport - and it wasn't worth it. So we spent a LOT of time at the airport. Thank heavens for the Brother's Karmazov. And then, finally, at midnight (6PM LA time) we left Santiago for a 12 hour flight to LA.

De muchas maneras podemos llegar y alli cumplire tus deseos, porque tu en mi cabeza siempre estas y si me quieres te llevo. Hotel Wellington, Manhattan
This sign caught my eye, and the building looked old, so I wondered if it'd always been a hotel. Internet research turned this up (New York Times, I think):
ANONYMOUS LETTER DROVE HER TO DEATH; Mrs. Charles F. Schmidt Killed Herself and 8-Year-Old Son After Getting Note. HER HUSBAND ACCUSED IN IT Bodies Found in a Room at the Hotel Wellington Here ;- Couple Had Been Separated.
October 6, 1915, Wednesday
An anonymous letter in a feminine handwriting received by Mrs. Charles F. Schmidt, attacking her husband and leading her to believe that she had lost his love, caused Mrs. Schmidt to kill herself and her only child, Carl Robert, a 6-year-old boy, with gas in the Hotel Wellington, Seventh Avenue, near Fiftysixth Street, early yesterday morning.
Yikes! So, it's been a hotel a long time. Reviews of this place didn't mention any recent murder-suicides, fortunately.
Wellington
Wellington is standing at the entrance to a shop that sells all sort of bears and other plushies. Wellington is about as tall as me (5ft 6ins) and a snip at ?1495. On the other side of the doorway was Digby. He is the same size and his fur is black.
