The San Diego Padres & the home of my childhood friend Scott Binder, Kearney, Nebraska Sometime in the late 1960s, maybe 1968: Near the back door visible at the extreme left of this house, my Central Elementary school classmate Scott Binder solemnly informed me that there would be a new major league baseball team, and that it would be called the San Diego Padres. We were first- or second-graders, I think. I was shocked. I thought the teams of Major League Baseball were eternal entities, sort of like the ten commandments, or maybe like Scott Binder's house itself. We played over there a lot. "Pod Rays?" I asked. I'm surprised the house is still there. It's been shorn of the many trees and bushes that I recall surrounded it back then. In my mind, as a kid, this was a house of luxury and fine things; I considered it to be quite a bit better than the house our family lived in. I remember beginning to describe to my mother some of the many superb things I saw there, and she didn't want to talk about it. It looks like it's about to be torn down, now. Scott's father ran the Florist business next door. It's still there, too, in this Google Streetviewer photo, at the far right. Scott moved to Colorado not too long after that, and I became his "pen pal." My mother took me to see him in Fort Morgan, CO one time. I remember sleeping in their new house, and thinking, well, this is OK, but it sure would be better if Scott were back in Kearney. J-Flo's Flower Shop When Jenny Flores (aka J-Flo) was young, she always dreamed of becoming an independent florist. So when a swanky, mixed-use building became available, she moved in and set up shop. This building conforms to the Cafe-Corner standard. The friend's father did the flowers for the movie the Godfather (how cool is that). He's retired now, but agreed to do the flowers for the wedding for Chris and Maggie. And he did them for only the cost of the flowers, no labor! And what an amazing deal. They were beautiful and the centerpieces were stunning. kindness To you, it may look like a simple sausage taco with mustard wrapped in a paper towel. To me, it is a bit of kindness. I was strolling down Super South Congress on First Thursday (06 Mar 06) and wound up at Ben White Florist to listen to a band playing out front. (Johnny Cash's "Walk the Line"!! I knew that I was in the right place.) I sat on one of the tree stumps in the front yard and a lady asked me if I wanted a sausage wrap. I said "Sure!" and she proceeded to prepare me one. Gratis. Out of the kindness of her heart. As First Thursday grows further south down South Congress, I hope that the spirit of the beginnings of First Thursday stay strong. Long live South Austin!! Highlight of the Day: Improv (Maestro & Comedy Sportz) Today was amazing. After a morning and early afternoon spent in the best company I could hope for there were two improv shows to watch. I shared a table with this little boy who gave the suggestion of "Blood!" and watched Scott try to kill Les in a leg lock while he dangled from the ceiling. Then we shuttled over to the Hideout for Maestro where everyone was dressed all spiffy for the prom theme. GREAT SHOW. A calculus teacher kidnapped a student, Noah brought his drunk principal home with him, a Florist found out that he turned a girl into a guy on prom night, and there as a healthy sermon about the evils of prom to tie it all together. fall curly willow centerpiece dahlia red orange mokara orchid This fall wedding was in a beautiful old CT barn and these seasonal autumn dahlias were perfect for the rust, orange, burgundy / red color scheme. The dahlias paired well with the other flowers like roses, mokara orchids, calla lilies, and kangaroo paw. The centerpiece was made complete by the hanging votives which cast a lovely glow. Double Bowls with Fall Flowers This centerpiece was created using a double glass bowl, one lined with river stones and curly willow and the second with a hand tied bouqut of spray roses, sunflowers, gerber daisies and seeded euc. Watercolor Thank You Background is patterned paper by Kathy Griffiths for Provo Craft. I scored lines 1/4" in from each of the card's edges, but it is kind of hard to see in the photo. Focal image is Dried Marigold and Tea Dye Distress Inks applied with blending tool and foam to a manila shipping tag over a non-stick craft sheet. Misted with water and dried using a heat tool to give it a watercolor look. Stamped grass from Hero Arts CL428 Earth Flowers over top with Tea Dye Distress Ink. Stamped single flower from Hero Arts CG170 Wildflower Garden over top of that, using Dusty Concord Distress Ink. Trimmed to size and edged with Tea Dye. Cut a scalloped mat using a Spellbinders Nestabilities Classic Scalloped Rectangles die. Attached to card base with foam for dimension and added a bow. "Note of Thanks" sentiment is from Hero Arts AR137 Script Sentiments (an Archiver's Exclusive set). It is stamped using VersaFine Vintage Sepia pigment ink on glossy cardstock colored with Ranger alcohol inks. It is also adhered with foam squares for dimension. Finished with 3 orange jewels from Hero Arts CH216 Sunshine Mixed Accents. Thanks for looking! :-) Cheerful Flower ATC (35th) Background is watercolor paper. Swirled on Dried Marigold Distress Ink using a blending tool and foam. Stamped design from Hero Arts CL401 Speckled Ornaments repeatedly using Tsukineko VersaFine Vintage Sepia pigment ink (multiple generations). Flower is made from Ranger Gloss Paper covered with alcohol inks. Hero Arts E3271 Sunflower Style stamped on top using Ranger Archival Ink in black; then flower cut out. Stem cut from textured green cardstock. Ribbon is American Crafts. Adhered to kraft cardstock base edged with Tea Dye Distress Ink. Free advertisement Located on Grand Ave at Arsenal, this used to be "Botanicals on the Park". It was much larger, occupying 3 or 4 store fronts and had a full upper level. The original incarnation was a truely unique business for this area. While I suppose they sold actual flowers at the time, that aspect would have been lost on me as they had everything you could think of that was of a holiday theme. They also had a very wide variety of objects d'art that covered the entire palette of styles. One could find treasures in Botanicals on the Park that seemed to exist nowhere else. When ever family was visiting from out of state, going to Botanicals on the Park was on the list of "must do's". They all spent money there, as did I. For what ever reason, the owner decided to end that business and refocus his/her efforts on flower shop type inventory and/or services. Neither I nor any of my family have stepped foot in this "new?" establishment. It holds no interest for us beyond simply looking at the window display from time to time. And, for as many times as I have passed this window, since the inseption of "Botanicals Design Studio", I have never seen a single soul within to give evidence that this is a functioning, let alone thriving, business. Still, I do like the displays. Window Display 22/07/11 Call it a 'straw-nado' if you like(!). Late July and August is when London becomes a ghost town and the shop is quiet, giving me an afternoon to play with a bit of window design, using whatever's on hand. For this display, I taped some old branches to buckets into a cone shape, then after covering the frame in chicken wire, I wired on the straw from bales belonging to a previous window display. The buckets were filled with sunflower plants and then the straw cones were hung in the window. The pale straw and bright sunflowers made this an easy-to-see design in our very reflective windows. There are seasons of a woman's heart which cycle through joy and contentment to pain and sorrow; and seasons of her mind which seeks knowledge and develops wisdom. There are seasons of a woman's relationships from new friendship to mature trust and companionship; from acquaintance to deep love and commitment. There are seasons within seasons which overlap to make our lives rich, complicated, peaceful and restless. Just like the seasons of the year as creation turns on its axis new and varied aspects present themselves. It is an endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. This piece represents four women dancing around the cycle of life. Each is connected to the red womb-like source of the center circle, giving and receiving, supporting and nurturing. This hub revolves with the power of our efforts to connect with our source and each other. The power of this Dance makes possible our sisterhood in all times and places. Each woman is connected to the others as one season gives way to the next or lingers before turning us loose to continue our journey. Spring gains with the promise of new life, summer offers maturity and productivity, fall rewards with its bounty and winter withdraws into dormancy and rest to gain strength for resurrection. Our diversity as women is apparent in the variety of embellishments and fabrics expressing the nature of each season. Diversity, both as individuals with many facets and as women who belong to all the cultures of this world, is a blessing to be celebrated in the Dance. The outer, all encompassing ring of gold indicates that we are on a continuous journey with the universal spirit in the many ways in which it is understood. It's un-limiting nature is represented by the two seasons which break out of the bounds of the divine ring, times when we have glimpses of insight into our spirits as divine. Rarick June 2010 Seasonal Cupcakes @ Cupcake Royale To celebrate the season, Cupcake Royale is selling seasonal cupcakes to fit the fall. The last time I was there they were selling two types and I took it as a kind of challenge to try them both. Here we have the pumpkin with cream cheese buttercream frosting (front) and the spiced apple with caramel buttercream frosting. Pumpkin/Cream Cheese: There oughtta be a law. Seriously. I think this must have come freshly from the frosting station, it was that warm and fluffy and almost crumbly once I got beyond the ever so slightly crisped top. The cake was the best pumpkin "bread" I've ever had and the frosting held enough of the cream cheese tartness to perfectly complement the sweetness of the buttercream. Frankly, I wouldn't be at all disappointed if they added this to their permanent menu. Actually, I take that back. I'd much rather see a spring seasonal carrot cupcake. I took a sip of water and moved over to the next cupcake. Spiced Apple/Caramel: TOO SWEET! Goddam but halfway through this one and my teeth started to hurt. The cake alone was ok (not a huge fan of spiced apple as a rule) but when combined with the sugary frosting I was wondering whether I was entering sugar shock. I should point out that this they actually skimp on the frosting for this cake. It's more of a glaze than the liberal dollop you'll find on most of their other offerings, and even then I had to wonder. Frankly, I'd recommend avoiding this one like the plague. Behold, my first real disappointment from CR. But given just how good that first one was... Window to the soul? Everyone has a set of bog standard illustrations that they can produce on an inviting canvas. Just like most people have one tune that they can play on an instrument, or one football trick or one sexual position which they excel at. I cannot be left in front of a blank board or piece of paper without feeling compelled to produce one of my party pieces. I also can’t be left in a bar with pistachio nut shells without producing a phallus. Give me a score board for darts at the pub and a piece of chalk and I shall draw a fully labelled anatomical drawing of the fallopian tubes. I have gone through in my mind the images that I am most likely to produce in any given situation: - A horse - One of my university vehicle designs – usually the one that looks like a sperm. - A shark savaging someone (I once had to copy out an illustration of John the Baptist in RE at school; we were told to trace it exactly. I just had to embellish; drawing him stubbing every one of his toes on a rock in the water and the subsequent red stained horror that ensued as people wearing sacks watched his toes float downstream.) Now these usually happen after wine… - Giant woodland fungus-like penis with comedy hairy balls. - Female genitalia in abstract – rather like a melted dart board with a jelly tot at the top. - Female porn star/super-heroine with unfeasibly big breasts. This works great on the side of white vans. - A cat’s bum with tail erect and labelled ‘tea towel holder’ – that one I put on the Tate modern comments board. So we all have a little repertoire of doodles. They probably give away terrible flaws in our personalities. If I were a psychologist what would I glean from my favoured sketches?! A sexually frustrated/obsessed potential lesbian with penis envy and major bloodlust who likes long hairy mushrooms and big engines that you sit astride and perhaps even with slight zoophilic tendencies?! I did used to write HORSES ARE SKILL all over my lunchbox when other people were writing EMILY 4 BEN. If all else fails, go for the cute animal approach... I was invited to contribute generously to take this one, being a kind soul and having a few coppers about me, I obviously obliged. The cat seemed to take it all in its stride and didn't seem to be remotely interested in the pawing and fuss being made around it.
