Shakey's Shakey's Pizza Restaurant 2234 W Valley Blvd Alhambra, CA 91803 From wikipedia: Shakey's Pizza was founded in Sacramento, California, on April 30, 1954, by Sherwood "Shakey" Johnson and Ed Plummer. Johnson's nickname resulted from nerve damage following a bout of malaria suffered during World War II. The first weekend the parlor opened, only beer was served and Shakey took the profits from beer sales and bought ingredients for pizza the following Monday. Shakey personally played dixieland jazz piano to entertain patrons. Shakey's initially became known outside Sacramento, not for its pizza, but for the jazz program it sponsored on a regional radio network. Shakey Johnson is honored in the Banjo Hall of Fame in Guthrie, Oklahoma, for his longtime use of banjo music at his pizza parlors. Other live music, including piano, was also a staple in the old Shakey's parlors. The original store at 57th and J in Sacramento remained in business until the mid 1990s. The second Shakey's Pizza Parlor opened in Portland, Oregon, in 1956. Shakey's opened their third parlor in Albany, Oregon in 1959 which was the first building Shakey's actually owned and the first building to be built in the distinct building style for which Shakey's is known. It now operates as a used bookstore. According to Johnson, Shakey's Pizza engaged in little market research and made most of its decisions on where to locate stores by going where Kinney Shoes opened stores. By the time Johnson sold his interest in 1967, there were 272 Shakey's Pizza Parlors in the United States. The first international store opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1968. By 1975, the company had expanded to the Pacific Rim, including Japan and the Philippines. The chain is now much bigger in the Philippines than in the United States. Shakey Johnson sold his half of the company for $3 million to Colorado Milling and Elevator in 1967, which acquired Plummer's half for $9 million the next year. Shakey's was again sold to Hunt International Resources in 1974. Two franchisees bought the chain in 1984 and they sold out to Inno-Pacific Holdings of Singapore in 1989. Most of the U. S. stores closed during the time Inno-Pacific owned the chain (two Shakey's restaurants in the Houston, Texas metro area were shuttered). Some of the remaining franchisees took Inno-Pacific to court in 2003. Before this could come to trial, Shakey's was sold to Jacmar Companies of Alhambra, California, in 2004. Jacmar had been the franchisee of 19 Shakey's restaurants. Commuter Mapping I see it twice a day coming to and from work. In the morning it is still, and seagulls seem to think it is their hang out. The building looks poised, waiting for its people to arrive. On summer evenings, when it stays light late as I drive home I see many people swimming and splashing. I love the moment as I drive from under the Mass. Ave. Bridge and the area is reveled to me - the bridge, the docks, the flame of the bonfire, the water, the steam off the hot tub. The people on the bridge in their swim suits. In the winter the ice is lit up and the protected swimming area on the Charles has many skaters. I try to come in with my family once in the summer. We park down in Kenmore Square and walk up Beacon St. to the Muddy River entrance. There are many spots to set up our little camp, but we usually do the full loop, by all the other camps, before choosing a spot. Right in the midst of things in the sun? In a shady corner? We have our picnic lunch on the outskirts, and then go over to the changing rooms before making our way over to the River side. The first area nice wooded deck with chairs, but my kids (and me truly) head over to the more interactive stuff, with places to jump off into the water, rope swings, and a sort of giant squishy raft that you can try to stay dry on but end up soaked by the end. My oldest and my husband take a kayak out for an hour while I take the youngest into the kiddie pool next to the muddy river. As the day turned to dusk we went and made smores by the bonfire. By the time headed back to the car, our path seemed like a different one than we had come in upon. The umbrellas were lit from above; there were little fire boats on the muddy river, and an impromptu concert had begun near the Muddy River. The twisting parts of overpass seemed alive. Next to the trees it formed an urban canopy fit for a muggy night. Under the over pass, between Beacon St and Comm., an outdoor movie was being shown. So instead of leaving we spread our blanket out and watched. When it was over we carried the kids back to the car. Virginia creeper or five-leaved ivy (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is a woody vine native to eastern and central North America, in southeastern Canada, the eastern and central United States, eastern Mexico, and Guatemala, west as far as Manitoba, South Dakota, Utah and Texas. It is a prolific climber, reaching heights of 20 to 30 m in the wild. It climbs smooth surfaces using small forked tendrils tipped with small strongly adhesive pads 5 mm in size. The leaves are palmately compound, composed of five leaflets (rarely three leaflets, particularly on younger vines) joined from a central point on the leafstalk, and range from 3 to 20 cm (rarely 30 cm) across. The leaflets have a toothed margin, which makes it easy to distinguish from poison-ivy, which has three leaflets with smooth edges. The flowers are small and greenish, produced in clusters in late spring, and mature in late summer or early fall into small hard purplish-black berries 5 to 7 mm diameter. These berries contain oxalic acid, which is poisonous to humans and other mammals, and may be fatal if eaten. However, accidental poisoning is uncommon, likely because of the bad taste of the berries. Despite being poisonous to mammals, they provide an important winter food source for birds. Mark Taper Forum Los Angeles The Mark Taper Forum opened in 1967 as part of the Los Angeles Music Center, the West Coast’s equivalent of Lincoln Center. The smallest of the three, the Taper sits between the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the Ahmanson Theater at opposite ends of a plaza. The three buildings of the Music Center were designed by Los Angeles architect Welton Becket. Mr. Becket designed the center in the style of New Fomalism, which emphasized geometric shapes. The perfectly circular Taper is considered one of Mr. Becket’s best works, featuring a distinctive decorated drum of a design, its exterior wrapped in a lacy precast relief by Jacques Overhoff. The lobby has a curving abalone wall by Tony Duquette, Charles Moore described Becket's design for the Music Center as ;Late Imperial Depression-Style cake. Becket designed the building not knowing who would use it. At one point it was considered for chamber music or even grand jury meetings. Ultimately Dorothy Chandler, the Los Angeles cultural leader, convinced Center Theater Group artistic director Gordon Davidson to use the Taper. For 38 years Mr. Davidson was the artistic director of Center Theater Group, which also ran the Ahmanson and eventually the Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City. The Taper became known for its thrust stage, jutting into a classical, semicircular amphitheater, which creates an especially intimate relationship between audience and performer. In other words, it's a fairly formulaic comedy that veers awkwardly from gags (ranging from slapstick to mean-spiritedness) to sentiment (ranging from sappy to not entirely sappy). Its appeal will depend entirely on your feelings about Sandler and the rest of the gang--if you like this bunch of lugs (in all their prolonged adolescent glory), then you'll like this movie. If you don't, you won't. Everyone's in relaxed but good form; affable is more the comic goal than razor sharp. Expect gags about being fat, being old, prolonged breast-feeding, ogling hot chicks, flatulence, etc. There's some role reversal: it's the women, particularly Hayek as a type-A fashion designer, who need to learn the eternal cinematic lesson that family is more important than work.
