Tokyo - Nakagin Capsule Hotel on Shimbashi
From Wikipedia:
The Nakagin Capsule Tower (-€«×»ëżďü, Nakagin Kapuseru Taw?) is a mixed-use residential and office tower designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa and located in Shimbashi, Tokyo, Japan.
Completed in 1972, the building is a rare built example of Japanese Metabolism, a movement that became emblematic of Japan's postwar cultural resurgence. The building was the world's first example of capsule architecture built for actual use. The building is still in use as of 2010, but has fallen into disrepair.
Design, construction and usage
The building is actually composed of two interconnected concrete towers, respectively eleven and thirteen floors, which house 140 prefabricated modules (or "capsules") which are each self-contained units. Each capsule measures 2.3 m (8 ft) × 3.8 m (12 ft) × 2.1 m (7 ft) and functions as a small living or office space. Capsules can be connected and combined to create larger spaces. Each capsule is connected to one of the two main shafts only by four high-tension bolts and is designed to be replaceable. No units have been replaced since the original construction.
The original target demographic were bachelor salarymen. The compact apartments included a wall of appliances and cabinets built in to one side, including a kitchen stove, a refrigerator, a television set, and a reel-to-reel tape deck. A bathroom unit, about the size of an aircraft lavatory, is set into an opposite corner. A large circular window over a bed dominates the far end of the room.
Shop: built-in display case
This, of course, will stay as well, though the picture above it will go.
A couple more photos of the shop follow - after the Jacques Cartier Bridge.

You scream, I scream, we all scream...
I remember being in kindergarten and every night about an hour before bed time my grandfather would take me by the hand out to his garage to the big white freezer. He would open the heavy creaking door oh so slowly as I stood in utter excitement. Within that white chest was something that was as good as gold to a 5 year old child. In that chest were barrels and barrels of ice cream.
Grandpa retired from the steel mill at a rather early age. Not being one to sit around idle he went to work for the ice cream shop that was owned by a family friend. He spent day after day churning that dairy cream, sugar, and natural flavors into some of the best ice cream this side of the Mississippi. Each time a new flavor was made there was about a half gallon left in the machine once the 5 gallon tubs were filled to the max. Grandpa being in the position he was in decided that it should not go to waste and started putting those bits of flavor into a container, mixing batch after batch after batch until there was a tub with enough flavors to make anyone happy. Each week that tub was brought home and placed into that treasure chest in the shed.
Sometimes there was writing on the tubs giving an indication as to what you were about to enjoy, but most of the time it was left blank, a mystery of sorts like the dum dum's with the question marks on them. You just opened it up and took a scoop of what could be strawberry and pecan, or double chocolate and pistachio.
As I would stand there anticipating the ice cream for what felt like a million years of slowly opening and creaking I could catch a glimpse of some of the writing. The "blueberry" and "mint cc" called to me. The "peppermint" begged me to pick it. I wished that I could just grab it and run to the back field to eat it using only my hands until my fingers got to cold. But I didn't. I stood there and waited, and stared at the treasure before me. Grandpa would never say much, He would just move the tubs around a bit making that scraping finger on the chalk board sound as he went about his reorganization. Then it was up to me to pick one.. I could have any one I wanted. All of those flavors were mine for the taking. Did I feel like strawberry? Or maybe peach pie? The butter nut, and chocolate chip? No I knew which one I wanted. I wanted the one to the right, in the very back. The one without the name. I liked the mystery, I loved the suspense. I debated in my head the whole way back to the house with that big tub in my little arms what my mystery flavor would be, excited as to what beautiful colors layed within, all the while hoping that somewhere in that tub was grandpa's favorite. The kind that grandpa first gave me on my very first trip to Steeses, the kind that to this day I order every chance I get...
If you are every at your favorite ice cream stand, and sadly they are out of White House, chances are Grandpa's spirit made an ice cream stop in his journey's, or it could be I was just there two minutes before you.

Freeze dried in Oneonta Gorge
Posting this shot is worth the story alone. This was taken in Oneonta Gorge last month during a particularly chilly bout of cold weather which froze many of the area's waterfalls. For those not familiar with this gorge, it is a popular spot during the hot summer months. The gorge itself is an extremely narrow canyon that is only about 1/4 of a mile long but requires wading, sometimes up to one's chest through pools of water to reach. It is quite impossible to hike up this canyon without wading.
During the summer this is great, the canyon is shaded and always about 15 degrees cooler and the cold water is quite refreshing. Crowds of people churn up this canyon on weekends, making photography frustrating but cooling off quite enjoyable.
About once a year we get a cold snap that is cold enough and long enough to turn the many waterfalls of the Columbia River Gorge into winter wonderlands. It is one of my favorite times of year. It is hard to imagine enjoying as much discomfort as this weather brings. Painfully chilled faces and hands, pants and fleeces coated in ice to the point that you crack when you walk. Spray from the waterfalls coating your cameras and freezing solid. Hurried trips back to the car to regain feeling in your extremities before venturing out for "just a few more pictures".
In other words, bliss.
I make a point of getting out here every year. So I have spent a fair amount of time at most of the main waterfalls over the past few winters. But this one had always seemed a little to crazy to attempt. Afterall, it requires wading, and during this time of year, getting wet for that long would result in frostbite at the least and even hypothermia. Probably hypothermia. I will go through a lot in pursuit of amazing scenes like this, but I think I draw the line at hypothermia. Just sounds overrated if you ask me.
The idea of making it up this gorge somehow to see this falls was awfully tempting still. A few of us talked about it and brainstormed ideas. The most popular was to buy an inflatable raft and pump it up and use it to cross the pools. The big problem with this is that there is a giant logjam at the mouth of this gorge that one has to climb over in order to enter the gorge itself. So any raft would have to be inflated on site, and it ruled out bringing in a canoe or kayak.
Then a stroke of inspiration was lent to me on a comment to a photo I posted some time ago, to rent a drysuit. A ha. Even more fortunate, I did not have to rent one, a friend likes to surf and scuba dive and owns a drysuit. Even better, we are almost the same size. So the cold snap hit, I got a day off work, naturally I called him right away and got my hands on a drysuit. All that stood before me then was a giant frozen logjam and a quarter mile of ice cold water.
The fun begins.
My first task was wading across the shallow stream to reach the logjam, which required me donning the drysuit. I had to repeatedly take it on and off as needed because I did not want to trip, or snag it on a log and tear it. But as an additional wrinkle I did not have waterproof boots to put over the feet of the drysuit. Even though the entire suit is waterproof, I did not want to walk across rocks in just the suit and risk damaging the feet. So I pulled on an old pair of my hiking boots to protect the feet. They worked well to that extent but of course got soaked the moment I stepped in the water. Which basically made them like little freezers on my feet.
The suit kept out the water, not the cold.
By the time I got across the first stream, which only took 2-3 minutes, and was never deeper than mid-calf, I could not feel my toes. So I had to sit down, take off the suit, pack it up, and hold my toes until I was certain they were still going to talk to me. Then on to the logjam. Unfortunately I hit another unexpected snag here too. Right before the logjam are two giant boulders that sit right in the middle of the stream. There are two basic choices, you can go left around them, in the tight space between them and the cliff walls. You just wedge yourself in, back to the wall and hands and feet on the nearest boulder and crab walk along, suspended over a deep little pool of water. Or you go right, which requires wading through a fairly deep pool of water and pulling yourself up on a chest-high shelf of rock onto the second boulder. Well a small waterfall had turned the left hand cliff into a sheet of ice, there was no way I would get any traction on it, even with Yaktrax on my feet. The pool on the right was doable with the drysuit, but I did not want to have to climb the jagged shelf of rock in it, again afraid I would puncture or damage the suit. So I had to climb the first boulder and jump the four foot gap down to the second boulder, with all my gear attached. I did not think too much on how I was going to get out on my return trip...
This mini-adventure brought me to the logj

9-19 Ninth Avenue (AKA 7-11 Little West 12th Street)
Meatpacking District, Manhattan
History
From 1878, when the John Jacob Astor I Estate was partitioned, this property passed to William Astor, then to John Jacob Astor IV, and finally to William Vincent Astor, who held it until 1943. This building has had a complex construction history. Its present form resulted from an alteration in 1921-22 (Alt. 2409-1921) when four two- and three-story stables and wagon storage buildings were unified at two stories, fortified with interior steel girders, and converted to a garage (on both stories) with stores.
It appears that the previous buildings were: a two-story former storeldwelling (11 Little West 12' Street) altered in 1881 (Alt. 972-1881, A.B. Van Heusen, builder); a two-story stables building (17 Ninth Avenue) rebuilt in 1889 (Alt. 597-1 889, Hugh Getty, mason); a one-story market and stables building (9 Ninth Avenue) rebuilt and raised to two stories in 1905 (Alt. 1398-1905, George M. McCabe, architect), after being condemned by the Board of Health; and a three-story stables building (19 Ninth Avenue) constructed in 1908 (NB 647-1906, George M. McCabe, architect).
Commercial tenants both before and after the 1920s alteration were mostly in the fruit and produce business, including several long-term ones: Domenico Calarco, Frank Cliento & Co., Angelo Gionfrida, West Side Water Cress Co., and C. Starace & Bro. (later C. Starace & Bros., Inc. and J.J. Starace, Inc.). Domenico Calarco purchased the building from Astor in 1943 and held it until 1962. It operated as the Radio Garage and Avenue Garage until the 1940s, then as the Gansevoort Garage (Leo and Frank Calarco) and Olympia Garage.
This building was the result of a 1921-22 alteration during one of the major phases of development in the area, when transportation and market-related buildings were being constructed or significantly adapted in the district.

----About the district----
The Gansevoort Market Historic District - consisting of 104 buildings - is distinctive for its architectural character which reflects the area's long history of continuous, varied use as a place of dwelling, industry, and commerce, particularly as a marketplace, and its urban layout. The buildings, most dating from the 1840s through the 1940s, represent four major phases of development, and include both purpose-built structures, designed in then-fashionable styles, and those later adapted for market use. The architecture of the district tells the story of an important era in New York City's history when it became the financial center of the country and when its markets were expanding to serve the metropolitan region and beyond. Visual cohesion is provided to the streetscapes by the predominance of brick as a facade material; the one- to six-story scale; the presence of buildings designed by the same architects, a number of them prominent, including specialists in market-related structures; the existence of metal canopies originally installed for market purposes; and the Bel

SOLAR ABSORPTION REFRIGERATION. SOLAR ABSORPTION
Solar absorption refrigeration. White westinghouse freezer. Refrigeration hot gas bypass.
Solar Absorption Refrigeration
- A system in which a secondary fluid absorbs the refrigerant, releasing heat, then releases the refrigerant and reabsorbs the heat. Ammonia or water is used as the vapor in commercial absorption cycle systems, and water or lithium bromide is the absorber.
- An absorption refrigerator is a refrigerator that uses a heat source (e.g., solar, kerosene-fueled flame) to provide the energy needed to drive the cooling system.
- Of, relating to, or determined by the sun
- Solar is an American fictional comic book character. Originally known as Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom, he first appeared in a comic book published by Gold Key Comics in the 1960s.
- Relating to or denoting energy derived from the sun's rays
- relating to or derived from the sun or utilizing the energies of the sun; "solar eclipse"; "solar energy"
- "Solar" is a musical composition attributed to Miles Davis on the studio album Walkin', considered a modern jazz standard. There is disagreement concerning the exact pronunciation of the tune (|ČsMlYr| or |ČsMlär|).
Solar Eclipse January 15, 2010
The solar eclipse of January 15, 2010 is an annular eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 0.9190. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring Earth's view of the Sun. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun, causing the sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most of the Sun's light. An annular eclipse appears as a partial eclipse over a region thousands of kilometres wide.
This is the longest annular solar eclipse of the millennium,[1] and the longest until December 23, 3043, with a maximum length of 11 mins and 7.8 seconds. (The solar eclipse of January 4, 1992 was longer, at 11 minutes, 41 seconds, occurring in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.)

New Zipel Refrigerator Lineup Featuring the ‘Smart Sensor’ System
Samsung Electronics has unveiled its new Zipel refrigerator lineup for 2010, taking the cooling system and eco-friendliness to new levels with its "Smart Sensor" features.
The Smart Sensor is a fully automated system to help the refrigerator operate in the most optimized way. The trick is its ability to detect varied factors – including the temperature and humidity outside the fridge, the temperature inside, and the amount of food stored -- which might affect the refrigerator’s functioning.
Temperature Sensor with Arduino
A thermistor (temperature sensor) is connected to the Arduino's ADC input. The Arduino samples the current temperature once per second, and outputs the temperature on the connected LCD screen. Programmed in C++.
This was photo was taken while the Arduino was in my refrigerator. After taking the picture, I realized I had incorrectly calibrated the thermistor, hence why it is reporting a warmer temperature than it should be while inside my refrigerator ;)

The irony is that there was nothing in the fridge it wanted to eat, except some smelly cheese from Lille that was in a heavy glass dish. It spurned my ageing red cabbage and carrots.
But it has ruined my irreplacable Zanussi Electrolux side by side under the counter fridge freezer. They stopped making them a year ago, and noone else makes a comparable model.
