To test if your hard drive is about to break
No hard drives hold forever. The fact that they work well is of course very important, given the very important data we store on them. So it's good sometimes to test drive your drives to see how they feel! The hard drives in our computers is spinning at a substantial , and as with any other mechanical gadgets wear occurs. An ordinary hard drive in a desktop computer, rotates at 7200 rpm when it's working, while a regular drive in a laptop spins at 5400 revolutions per minute. You can calculate how many rotations it is about for a long workday. The fact is that Windows and its file system keeps pretty good track of faulty areas on your disks, and lets just get to use them. The advantage is that you do not have problems. The disadvantage is that you rocked into a belief that one's hard drive works great and is flawless. A disk that has a few years old are rarely flawless ... One sign that a hard drive is about to break, is that it sounds terrible. In the end, the coup de grace, with no loud clicking sound, followed by error message that you can not read or write to the device. Anyone who has been through a hard drive crash knows what I'm talking about. These would not come, and then it's good to replace worn-out hard drives in a timely manner . In this article I will demonstrate some applications you can run that analyzes the health of your hard drive . How you doing to change the hard drive I will return to in a future article. However, I can give a tip to check the program Norton Ghost , or similar. CrystalDiskInfoThis free program gives you a quick check over all your disks. It delivers plenty of statistics, but if you are not interested in it enough to check on Health Status . There speaks namely program on how good your hard drive is doing. Is it Good , no problem. If it says Caution is time to replace the device. You download CrystalDiskInfo from home. There is a link to a zip file that you download and unpack. Remember to unzip it into a new folder. The program needs no installation and can run directly. The tool is very easy to use, and I do not read much about it. HD TuneThe program HD Tune is more advanced than CrystalDiskInfo. There are a limited free version, and a professional version which costs just under 300 dollars. If you are a home user who just wants to get basic information about your disk health, free version works great. The interface is not as good as in CrystalDiskInfo, but there are more features. In the dropdown menu, select the hard drive you want to check. You can then switch to the tab, Error Scan and then click Start to do a scan for bad tracks on the disk. Please tick the Quick Scan for a simpler but faster scanning. Try the programs and test how your disks are doing! Perhaps, the system hard disk to collapse completely, and then it's time to change before it goes too far.
