Solo (a 'she') is one of a handful of happy cats stationed at The Bann Makok retreat - eight rooms of reclaimed wood, floating in an exotic bend of river in a still unspoiled island off Thailand. It's such an exquisite, near-anonymous little place, that it seems almost dangerous to flag it up.

Rochester city schools do not have a good reputation. In fact, I sell quite a bit of real estate because young families want to move their children out of the city school district.

There seems to be one exception. I've worked with two different families that have had a child accepted in the Rochester School of the Arts and the most important thing to them is that they stay with the city bounds. It's a beautiful building for those beautiful minds that is located on University Ave.

Legend of Nanabush and the Thorn

Legend of Nanabush and the Thorn

You are the rose
I am the thorn.

A native legend of the rose and the thorns from the folklore is that of Nanabush. Nanabush was the son of the West Wind and the great grandson of the Moon. This unusual ancestry gave him rather unusual powers.

Nanabush's mother died at his birth, and he was raised by his grandmother, Nokomis. Throughout his life he did many good things, and sometimes rather naughty things. In this respect he was quite human! Being part human, Nanabush behaved as humans do -- sometimes good and sometimes bad.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Wild rose bushes are very beautiful, but they are covered from top to bottom with very sharp thorns and prickles. If you were to pick wild roses, you would probably have to spend quite a while trying to pull the thorns and prickles out of your hands.

At one time many years ago, rose bushes did not have any thorns. They had long smooth stems. Even the smallest child could pick them without injury. This story explains how and why rose bushes became covered with thorns and prickles.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

ONE day great fat Rabbit was talking to his animal friends. I'm hungry," he said. "How about you?"

"Yes, we're hungry too!" the animals shouted. "What should we eat today?"

"Let's try something different," Rabbit said. "I'm tired of eating grass and clover all the time."

"But we've tasted just about everything," replied the animals.

"No, not everything," replied Rabbit. "We've never tried to eat rose bushes."

"That's right!" the other animals agreed.

"I wonder if rose bushes taste good," said Bear.

"One way is to find out," replied Rabbit. "Let's find some rose bushes."

So away the animals scampered, looking everywhere for rose bushes.

Suddenly, Rabbit stopped and shouted excitedly, "I just remembered where there is a great big garden full of rose bushes! Follow me!"

The animals ran after Rabbit, their leader, and were huffing and puffing when they arrived at the rose garden. Sweet-smelling pink flowers covered the bushes as far as their eyes could see.

"What part do we eat -- the petals, or the leaves?" shouted the animals.

"Let's try both," replied the Rabbit. "I like the petals best, but even the leaves taste good!" All the animals agreed, and they nibbled and nibbled and nibbled, until every petal and almost every leaf had disappeared into their big fat tummies.

"I wonder who owns this rose garden," asked Raccoon.

"Who cares," answered Rabbit. "Whoever owns it had better watch out, or we'll eat him too!"

"Ha, ha, ha!" laughed the animals. Soon their bellies were full and they agreed to have an afternoon nap.

"See you later!" they shouted to each other as they disappeared into the forest.

As time went by, there were very few rose bushes left on earth. The few that had been left were very worried that soon they would be discovered and eaten too.

"What can we do to protect ourselves?" they asked each other.

"There is nothing we can do except wait to be eaten," they decided.

But one older rose bush suddenly had an idea. "Nanabush loves flowers. Why don't we try to find him and ask him to help us out?"

"Good idea!" cried the other bushes.

Now Wind heard the rose bushes talking, and swept up to them. "I am your friend, Wind. I am also friendly with Nanabush, for I have helped him any times."

With these words, Wind swept up the bushes and carried them on his back. Now Wind knew that Nanabush, the Spirit, had just returned from a long journey, and he blew these rose bushes toward Nanabush's flower garden.

As they drew near the flower garden, they heard Nanabush shouting, "Who has destroyed my lovely hedge of rose bushes?"

Just then, Wind blew the rose bushes straight to Nanabush's feet.

"Rabbit and some of his friends ate your rose bush hedge, Nanabush," said the rose bushes. "Soon there will be none of us left on earth!"

Nanabush was overjoyed to see the rose bushes and asked, "How did you escape the animals, my friends?"

"We were hidden," replied the rose bushes, "but soon we will be eaten too, unless you can save us from that naughty rabbit and his friends."

"I will help you," replied Nanabush. "I am going to give you thousands of small thorn-like needles to cover your branches and stems. The thorns will not spoil your great beauty, but they will make anyone who tried to eat you wish they hadn't!"

Just then Nanabush spotted Rabbit and his friends running toward them.

"I am going to hide," Nanabush told the rose bushes. "You stand up straight and tall and wait for them to spot you. I promise they won't eat you."

"Chocolate Hills"

Digital Karma Project '09

Legends...

Fourmug explain the formation of the Chocolate Hills.

The first tells the story of two feuding giants who hurled rocks, boulders, and sand at each other. The fighting lasted for days, and exhausted the two giants. In their exhaustion, they forgot about their feud and became friends, but when they left they forgot to clean up the mess they had made during their battle, hence the Chocolate Hills.

A more romantic legend tells of a giant named Arogo who was extremely powerful and youthful. Arogo fell in love with Aloya, who was a simple mortal. Aloya's death caused Arogo much pain and misery, and in his sorrow he could not stop crying. When his tears dried, the Chocolate Hills were formed.

The third legend tells of a town being plagued by a giant carabao, who ate all of their crops. Finally having had enough, the townsfolk took all of their spoiled food and placed it in such a way that the carabao would not miss it. Sure enough, the carabao ate it, but his stomach couldn't handle the spoiled food, so he defecated, leaving behind him a mound of feces, until he had emptied his stomach of the food. The feces then dried, forming the Chocolate Hills.

The last legend is about a Gluttonous giant named Dano that eats everything in his path. One day he came to a plain. He saw a beautiful young woman named Eng. To win her affection, he needed to lose weight. So he excreted everything he ate. In the end, his fecal matter covered the land and he won Eng's affection. -W

Cheers!

I Want That Organ!

I Want That Organ!

Saw this when going by on a bus. Had to go in and try it. Loved it. I managed to haggle the price down from ?125 to ?90, metaphorically giving a thuggish V-sign to everything charity shops ever stood for in the first place

It's got everything, man. Even a sliding protective cover for the keyboards which Ed dubbed the "You Can't Play It" Shield. The bass pedals shake the house, the knobs and sliders make brilliant changes to the sounds, the little music stand squeaks convincingly, and there's a sustain lever you control with your knee. It's a full-body rock 'n' roll workout

The stool it came with opens up revealing numerous musical books, cassette tapes and instruction manuals. Best of all, it came with a wooden stick which I assume is for smiting people who dislike your playing

About me: I am currently a nanny and have been working as one for over 7 years. In addition to watching, taking care of, and playing with children, I also stay actively involved in the families I have worked with by cooking, cleaning, assisting with laundry and other housekeeping projects, running errands, and taking children to various activities and doctor’s appointments. Growing up in a family with seven other siblings has greatly helped instill in me a love and passion for being around children of all ages and in all different stages of life. There is no age group that I am uncomfortable working and interacting with and I love how each stage brings with it so many new and exciting challenges and opportunities.

I am a graduate from Liberty University where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Multidisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Music, Business, & Psychology. I am currently working my Masters in Professional Counseling through Liberty University Online. I have a love and passion for music as well and I currently teach private violin lessons and am on staff at New Covenant School as adjunct faculty where I teach beginning violin and also assist with the school string orchestra.

I have been blessed in so many areas of my life and I want to make it a goal to be a help blessing to any and all families that I have the privilege of working with in the future.

Favorite babysitting activities: LOVE being outside with children, so any outdoor activities and taking walks are some of my favorite pastimes. I also enjoy playing board games, coloring, and cooking with and for the children I work with.

Favorite Disney Movie: Tangled, Cars, Finding Nemo, & Ratatouille

The Sacramento Photographers Monthly contest for March is any photo that may pertain to music. While browsing through several music shops, the keys of the saxophone caught my eye as resembling musical notes.

So if you imagine hard enough, the keys on top resemble 3 flats, thus the key is E-flat.

If you're a fan of the movie, "The Sound of Music", then you know that the first 3 notes just happen to be...do, re, mi...lol Love that movie!!

Modena - La facciata del Duomo

Modena - La facciata del Duomo

Modena Cathedral is a Romanesque church in Modena, Italy. It is the cathedral, or duomo in Italian, of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola. Consecrated in 1184, it is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Europe and a World Heritage Site. Two previous churches had been constructed on the site since the 5th century, but they had both been destroyed. Work on the modern Cathedral began in 1099, under the direction of the master builder Lanfranco, over the site of the sepulchre of Saint Geminianus, Modena's patron saint. The Saint's remains are still exhibited in the cathedral's crypt. The present cathedral was consecrated by Pope Lucius III on July 12, 1184.After Lanfranco's work, the Cathedral was embellished by Anselmo da Campione and his heirs, the so-called "Campionese-masters". The current facade therefore exhibits different styles. The majestic rose-window was added by Anselmo in the 13th century, while the two lions supporting the entrance's columns are of Roman age, probably discovered while digging the foundations. The facade has also notable reliefs by Wiligelmus, a contemporary of Lanfranco's; these include portraits of prophets and patriarchs, and most of all the Biblical Stories, a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture. The scholars have pointed out the splendid achievements in the creation of Adam and Eve, the original sin and the story of Noah. The side gates are also noteworthy. On Piazza Grande, the Porta Regia ("Royal Gate"), also by the campionesi, and the shorter Porta dei Principi ("Princes' Gate"), decorated with a relief depicting episodes of the life of Saint Geminianus, by a pupil of Wiligelmus'. On the northern side is the Porta della Pescheria ("Fish-Market Gate"), with reliefs inspired by the cycle of the years' twelve months (on the doorposts) and tales from the Breton Cycle of King Arthur (on the arch). The interior is divided into three naves. Between the central nave and the crypt is a marble parapet by Anselmo da Campione portraying the Passion of Christ, including the Last Supper. The pulpit is by Arrigo da Campione, decorated with small terracotta statues. Notable also the wood crucifix from the 14th century. The Duomo houses also the nativity scenes by two great Modenese artistis: Antonio Begarelli's one (1527) and, in the crpyt, Guido Mazzoni's one (1480), also known as the Madonna della Pappa ("Madonna of the Pap").The Torre della Ghirlandina is annexed to the church. The funeral of the late famed tenor Luciano Pavarotti, a native of Modena, was held in the cathedral. The Torre della Ghirlandina is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Modena, in Emilia-Romagna, Italy.Standing at 86.12 metres, the tower is the traditional symbol of Modena, being visible from all directions outside the city.
