Happy anniversary, loyal friend! In the past 12 years this car has taken us to Chicago and back, following old Rt. 66 haunts. In the Windy City it cruised Lake Shore Drive. It's been to Mexico, California, Nevada, Utah, many many times... and all over every nook and crannie of Arizona. It's had its fussy moments, flat tires, slipping clutch, electrical problems, occasional nervousness, carburetor chaos...but overall it has been steadfast, true, starting right up and taking me wherever I want to go, firing on all 4, smooth as silk. My local VW friends can never figure out what the secret to its longevity is. I say it's all about the motor oil: the straight weight oil (40 in summer, 30 in winter), the additional screw-on oil filter, the deep sump that holds 2 1/2 extra quarts of oil, and the religiously performed oil changes, every 2500 miles without fail. I joke that while doing engine work I dripped a drop of my blood (from a busted knuckle) into the oil filler tube. I joke, but I am not really joking.
