Copenhagen ( /?ko?p?nhe???n/ or /?ko?p?nh????n/; Danish: Kobenhavn pronounced [k?ob?m??h????n] ( listen)) is the capital and largest city of Denmark, with an urban population of 1,199,224 (as of 1 January 2011) and a metropolitan population of 1,919,979 (as of 1 July 2011). With the completion of the transnational Oresund Bridge in 2000, Copenhagen has become the centre of the increasingly integrating Oresund Region. Within this region, Copenhagen and the Swedish city of Malmo are growing into a combined metropolitan area. Copenhagen is situated on the islands of Zealand and Amager.

First documented in the 11th century, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in the beginning of the 15th century. During the 17th century, under the reign of Christian IV, it became a significant regional centre.

Copenhagen is a major regional centre of culture, business, media, and science, as indicated by several international surveys and rankings (see International rankings below). Life science, information technology and shipping are important sectors, and research & development plays a major role in the city's economy. Its strategic location and excellent infrastructure, with the largest airport in Scandinavia located 14 minutes by train from the city centre, have made it a regional hub and a popular location for regional headquarters and conventions.

Copenhagen has repeatedly been recognized as one of the cities with the best quality of life.It is also considered one of the world's most environmentally friendly cities. The water in the inner harbour is clean and safe for swimming. 36% of all citizens commute to work by bicycle. Every day, they cycle a combined 1.2 million km.

Since the turn of the millennium, Copenhagen has seen a strong urban and cultural development and has been described as a boom town. This is partly due to massive investments in cultural facilities as well as infrastructure and a new wave of successful designers, chefs and architects. As of 2010, Copenhagen is ranked as the 10th most expensive city in the world according to Forbes magazine.(wiki)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

By all accounts 2011 is going to be tougher that this one was. Austerity is the watchword as we all, we being the normal non-investment bankers and politicians, have to tighten our belts.
As we go into the New Year, I still don't know if my job is safe, but fingers crossed it is. Like many others we are hanging on with plans for home improvements in case things go really belly up/
Talk is of the Euro collapsing, and one European economy failing; Germany and some of the Nordic countries going off on their own and doing some new euro, whilst the rest carry on as best they can.
Interest rates are due to rise, the target is 5% according to the BBC, though that might not happen all in the new year.

Not that it is all bad; as long as we have love and romance........

Let us all hope that the new year is better than predicted and the light at the end of the tunnel is not an approaching train! Silly me, there's snow on the line.

So, Happy New Year one and all, and who knows, it might never happen, eh?

2011-08-19 Cast in Metal

This Grave Monument was cast in pure Zinc in Bridgeport Connecticut, by the Monumental Bronze Company. It is hollow. This company operated from 1874 - 1914, and had dealerships in several cities in the USA, and one in Canada, in St. Thomas, Ontario. They advertised these castings as "White Bronze". They were cheaper to buy than Granite or Marble, and much lighter and cheaper to ship. Marble Monuments from the same time period are sometimes now so weathered that they are nearly unreadable. These, as you can see from the following photos are still perfectly legible. These type of monuments are scattered about South Western Ontario in various cemeteries, and sometimes you will only see one in a cemetery. They seem to have been a good investment. This one is in St. James Cemetery,(Anglican) in Brooke-Alvinston, Ontario.

My first attempt at a hollow investment - cored bronze casting. I used bronze welding rod as the pins to hold the core in place, and the piece was vacume cast. It is about the size of a tennis ball and the walls are about 3/8in thick.

A residence modelled after the pomegranate, the marvellous fruit the Sardinians call ““arenada”. For centuries a symbol of happiness, it is depicted on table cloths and painted on ancient ceramic pottery. It is a little world to hold in your hands.
Your shell: it is the most beautiful in the collection. And how could it not be, walking along the 100 m2 patio or the 90 m2 terrace. There is a private garden which, like green breeze, surrounds the two bedrooms, the kitchen and the living room; here, you can spend hours in total relaxation both in the splendour of summer as well as the cosy intimacy of winter.

The Deluxe Tower on the left fits nicely with the surroundings and I can't wait to see how the Premium Tower will turn out!

Alternative Energy: Political, Economic, and Social Feasibility

As we experience a significant increase in the price of petroleum, energy experts caution us to the coming of a time when easily accessed petroleum will begin to decline. The United States is confronted with the challenge of meeting current energy demands in the face of a declining and unstable energy supply. Alternative Energy systematically explores the most viable alternative sources of energy, discussing the technical, political, economic, and social feasibility of each technology in understandable terms. In addition, the book discusses the history of energy policy, as well as current policy. Intended for courses in energy and public policy, as well as for those interested in developing energy-efficient plans for sustainable communities, Alternative Energy will help laypersons become active participants in making future energy choices for their communities. Includes an interactive model of alternative energy mixes and estimated prices.

Thrifty Tip

Thrifty Tip

I purchased a Swiffer Sweeper years ago, pretty much when they first came out. I've loved it for sweeping my floors, cause they grab the finer dirt and hang on to it, instead of picking it up blowing it around like other mops or brooms can do. However, I've not been at all happy with having to buy the throwaway cloths all the time...especially lately, since our money doesn't seem to be going as far as it used to.

I've been thinking that those microfiber cloths might work good as a replacement that could be washed and reused, but never got any to see, cause they aren't exactly cheap either usually.

Galen wanted to stop at harbor freight the other day when we were close to one, so I went in with him (usually I don't...cause I hate shopping when we don't have any money) and I saw a package of 10 cloths for 7 or 8 bucks...and so decided to splurge and get them. I used them and they work perfectly...maybe even better than the swiffer cloths!! I haven't used one thats been washed yet...but hopefully they will still work as good. Plus you can use the cloths for lots of other things too. I'm going to have to stock up on these....so I have plenty and can use them for dusting...washing windows (if that ever happens LOL) and anything else I can think of. :)

I think this package of cloths cost about as much or just a tad bit more than a small box of swiffer cloths...so even though they can a little expensive at first, depending on how long they last they will be a thrifty investment in the long run! :)

International terminal topping out, April 13, 2010

International terminal topping out, April 13, 2010

A new global gateway for Atlanta is a step closer. The final piece of structural steel was placed into the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal on April 13.

Mayor Kasim Reed and Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson joined Hartsfield-Jackson Aviation General Manager Ben DeCosta and others for the “topping out” of the 1.2 million-square-foot international terminal. More than 100 guests signed their names on the final structural steel beam before a crane hoisted it into place.

“The Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal represents economic stimulus, sound fiscal management, a focus on efficiency and customer-friendly design,” DeCosta said. “But, most importantly, this facility represents a forward-thinking investment in the future of international travel into and out of metro Atlanta.”

DeCosta’s comments were followed by remarks from Reed and Anderson, who both spoke about the international terminal’s importance and benefits for passengers.

Other speakers at the event were Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Kenneth Stewart; Valerie Jackson, radio personality and widow of the former mayor for whom the international terminal is named; and Dan Molloy, Hartsfield-Jackson assistant general manager for Planning and Development.

Construction of the international terminal began in summer 2008 and is scheduled to be complete in spring 2012. The international terminal will have 12 gates, nine security checkpoint lanes for international departing passengers and six recheck lanes for domestic connecting passengers. It will eliminate the need for Atlanta-bound international passengers to recheck their baggage after they clear customs.
