In the woods

One of the pictures from our recent holiday in Herefordshire. We stayed in a Tipi in one of the wettest parts of the UK. Fortunately, the farm was at the top of a very steep hill and the worst of the rain had finished. We had a fantastic time, swinging from trees, playing host to a variety of wildlife each night (including several mice, a frog and a blind rabbit) and larking about in the woods. Absolute bliss! The kids quite enjoyed it too.

Old growth timber stump

Old growth timber stump

If we don't preserve what little old growth forest left in the United States, this is all our grandchildren will be able to see.

Most of the old growth stumps you encounter in the Pacific Northwest, have spring board notches where the loggers build make shift scaffolds so they could saw the huge old growth trees, at a lesser diameter and above the sometimes rock bearing moss of the lower part of the giant trees. This old stump showed no spring board signs but was not as broadly tapered as some stumps.

This photo was taken of my wife at the very start of our Shi Shi beach hike.

Sunday night June 14th, 2009 - my wife and I camped in the back of our pickup truck canopy at the “South Beach” camp on Washington’s Pacific Ocean coast.

Monday, we drove to Neah Bay, where we took an 8 mile round trip hike from the Makah Indian Reservation trailhead, along Shi Shi beach, to the beach immediately south of the Point of the Arches - - and back. After the Shi Shi Beach hike, we drove back north and took the short, but outstanding, one mile round trip hike to the Cape Flattery & Tatoosh Island overlook. There we saw marine birds and were treated to the sight of a gray whale swimming north through the channel between Tatoosh Island and Cape Flattery.

Tuesday, we drove from our “basic” motel room in Neah Bay, back to our home in Eastern Washington, via the Hood Canal route. The back road travel and hiking over the two and half days were really enjoyable. My wife and I both had a great time and especially enjoyed the hikes and the camp at South Beach.

My flickr photo set “Shi Shi Beach - June 2009” has a detailed narrative of the trip and hikes.

Uninvited guest - eagle & raven

Uninvited guest - eagle & raven

Ravens have a curious and amazing relationship between wolves, coyotes, and birds of prey - - all of whom will gladly make a meal of a raven, if given the opportunity. With many places to land, this raven seems to be courting disaster by landing on the same rock as the bald eagle. The relationship is covered well in a book called "Mind of the Raven".

This photo was taken on the highway between Sequim and Neah Bay along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

St. George's (Episcopal) Church

St. George's (Episcopal) Church

Flushing, Queens

Prominently sited on Main Street in the heart of downtown Flushing, St. George's (Episcopal) Church is a notable example of Gothic Revival design. Erected in 1853-54, this impressive stone building is the congregation's third church building on the site since 1746. The large size of St. George's is indicative of the importance of Flushing as a major regional center during the nineteenth century. A rare surviving work in New York City by the leading ecclesiastical architects Wills & Dudley, St. George's is a major example of ecclesiological church architecture.

A philosophical reform movement that had widespread influence on American Protestant Episcopal church design in the nineteenth century, ecclesiology sought spiritual renewal by returning to the rituals and architectural forms of the medieval church. Its architectural precepts are reflected at St. George's in the clear expression of the interior spaces in the exterior massing, in the straightforward use of the materials, and in the inclusion of certain details derived from medieval architecture, such as the high pitched roofs and lofty tapered spire, which the ecclesiologists imbued with symbolic meaning.

The design is also noteworthy for handsome walls of randomly-laid granite rubble trimmed with dressed red sandstone and stained glass windows in wood tracery derived from English Perpendicular and Decorated Gothic sources. In 1894, the church was enlarged by the addition of a new chancel wing that matched the older parts of the church in materials and detailing and incorporated exceptionally fine stained glass windows.

The 1907 Neo-gothic Old Parish House, designed by the prominent architect Charles C. Haight, complements the church building and features a skillfully composed asymmetrical design. The church and parish house are located in a landscaped churchyard that contains approximately fifty gravestones and memorials dating from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS

The Early Development of Flushing

St. George's (Episcopal) Church is located in Flushing, one of the oldest European settlements on Long Island. Originally known as Vlissingen, it was founded by a group of English colonists who were granted a patent on October 19,1645 by William Kieft, the director general of the Dutch colony of Nieuw Amsterdam.

These settlers, many of whom were Quakers, came from Massachusetts seeking religious freedom. Under the rule of Governor Peter Stuyvesant, the Quakers were denied the right of meeting for worship and in 1657 issued the famous Flushing Remonstrance, one of the earliest colonial pleas for religious freedom.

Two major buildings, the Friends Meeting House (1694-1719) and the Bowne House (1661-1696), survive as monuments of this important period in Flushing's history.

By the early nineteenth century Flushing had become a major regional village. In 1800, a stage line opened connecting Flushing and Brooklyn. In 1826, Rev. William A. Muhlenberg, rector of St. George's, established the Flushing Institute, a private secondary school that attracted students from as far away as South America and Europe.

The village was officially incorporated in 1837 and by 1843 had its own newspaper. Direct rail service to New York City opened in 1854. Many wealthy New Yorkers built elegant houses on the side streets off Main Street, especially in the years following the Civil War.

In 1862, the Romanesque Revival style Town Hall was constructed on Northern Boulevard and between 1853 and 1854 the congregation of St. George's erected its present building on its historic Main Street site.

Early History of St. George's Parish

The Episcopal Church was the second religious denomination to organize in Flushing. In 1702 the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts sent the first Church of England clergyman, Rev. George Keith, to Flushing as a missionary. Keith, a former Quaker, attempted to speak at the Quaker meeting but was shouted down, and he soon left the settlement.

In 1704, Rev. William Urquhart, whose parish comprised the towns of Jamaica, Flushing, and Newtown, began conducting regular Church of England services at the Guard House in Flushing. Around 1746, Capt. Hugh Went worth, a merchant in the West India trade, donated a half-acre tract from his farm in Flushing for the construction of an Anglican church building and establishment of a grave yard.

Erected near the highway leading to Jamaica (present-day Main Street), the small frame church building was named St. George's soon after its completion.

In 1761,underthe leadership of Samuel Seabury, who later became the first bishop of the Episcopal Church in America, the church was officially incorporated under a Royal Charter from George in as "the Rector and Inhabitants of the township of Flushing in Queens County in Communion of the Church of England." In 1797, Trinity Church in Manhattan (the mother church

Fort Totten Chapel

Fort Totten Chapel

Fort Totten Historic District, Fort Totten, Bayside, Queens

Building 638 is a one-and-one-half-story rectangular structure, faced with red brick, laid in American bond, and accented by clinker brick. It is set on a concrete foundation topped by a limestone bandcourse. Brick quoins mark the corners of the building. The asphalt-covered gabled roof terminates in a hip at the north end. A square tower interrupts the roof at the south end. The tower contains the arched entrance with paired paneled wood doors below a wood-paneled transom. The arch has a stone keystone and impost blocks. A blind stone panel is placed on the wall above the entrance arch. Arched openings filled with louvers mark the second level of the tower. A slate-covered spire, surmounted by a weathervane, rises from the tower. The main tower entrance is flanked by two single entrances with stone lintels and containing paneled wood doors. A concrete platform with wrought-iron railings extends across the front. The long sides of the building, at the east and west, are punctuated by tall arched window openings with stone impost blocks. These contain multi-pane sash set with colored glass, below fixed transoms. Secondary entrances with stone lintels and wood-paneled doors are also placed on these sides. Wood-frame shed-roof additions have been constructed at basement level on these sides. The cornerstone, placed at the southwest corner, reads: "Erected by the Quartermaster Corps United States Army 1938."
Building 638 was constructed in 1938-39 as the Fort Totten Chapel. Erected for the Office of the Quartermaster General according to a standardized plan, 6167-110-127, the building displays the forms and details of a Colonial Revival-style religious structure. Chapels of similar design were constructed at army posts throughout the United States. This was the second chapel structure at the fort; the first, a Gothic Revival-style frame structure, had been built between 1871 and 1879 and located somewhat further to the east along Murray Avenue. Funding for the construction of the new chapel was provided by the Work Relief Appropriations Act of 1936 under the direction of the War Department's Construction Program. It has remained in use for purposes of religious worship.

Historic District description

Fort Totten occupies a 136-acre site in northeast Queens, north of Bayside, on a peninsula jutting into the Long Island Sound. The Fort Totten Historic District, incorporating much of the peninsula, includes over 100 buildings and smaller secondary structures built between the 1830s and the 1960s.1 The fort, originally called the Fort at Willets Point, was established in 1857 as a major component in the defense system of New York Harbor. Its surviving, although uncompleted, fortification displays the features of the last phase of the Third System of coastal fortification, an important period of American military construction. The fort's surviving structures from various phases of construction vividly depict the changing role of military technology and defense strategy between the Civil War and World War II. The major period of improvement and expansion for the fort occurred in 1885-1914, resulting in much of the historic character that exists today.

In addition to upgrading the fortifications and batteries, installing torpedo buildings, and reconfiguring the parade grounds, the Army built about 80 structures, many of them to house the soldiers and officers who were stationed there. In 1898, the Fort at Willets Point was renamed in honor of Maj. Gen. Joseph G. Totten (1788-1864), who had been a major force in developing the Third System, and it was characterized as one of the most essential posts on the East Coast. The buildings and grounds, represent Fort Totten as a major military post and as one of the most intact, self-contained army posts in New York City.

Fort Totten is a tangible reminder of New York City's once-powerful harbor defense system which ranged from the inner harbor adjacent to Manhattan Island to the Narrows and Long Island Sound. Since the sixteenth century, New York Harbor has been recognized for its strategic importance, and as the city grew to prominence, its defense became increasingly important to New York and the nation. Fort Totten (the Fort at Willets Point) was planned as the counterpoint to Fort Schuyler on Throgs Neck (The Bronx), begun 1833, to guard the Long Island Sound entrance to New York Harbor. Although the Third System fort, begun in 1862 during the Civil War, was never completed because of advances in weaponry during that conflict, the army post retained its importance as the site of advanced training for Army Engineers and of research in military technology and military medicine.

It also housed several major military commands, including the Eastern Artillery District, New York, and the Coast Defense of Eastern New York and the North Atlantic District, through much of the twentieth century.

A Flower Grew (Poem for Rachel) (by James Watkins)

In deepest realms of glory,
a flower grew and danced
in morning bright-
and dreamed a dream
of golden choices,
of clouds,
and evening flight-

It sang a song with setting sun
that whispered with the wind-
and bloomed in heavens guardian light-
complete and warm within-

To run and play by stardust stream,
beyond the silent dawning,
and bless anew angelic hosts,
above celestial awning.

In father’s heart awoke a flame
aware at its beginning-
the smallest seed of love renewed,
prepared for time unending.

This heavy blow against the realm
of cruelty and darkness,
was sparked by hope
against the storm,
to flourish in its softness.

To topple kings and steadfast things
amazed at hidden wisdom-
that struck the plan, that
moved the hand,
that broke the holy prison.

Revealed in grace and wonder,
to live and dance and sing,
a perfect image of the light,
proceeding from the king.

Empowered by his mercy,
the father spoke the name-
and Rachel came into the earth,
to flower once again.

MEET AUDREY (6)

MEET AUDREY (6)

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn-Ruston was born May 4, 1929, near Brussels, Belgium. The daughter of an English banker and a Dutch baroness, she was sent to a girl's school near London after her parents' divorce. She was vacationing with her mother in Arnhem, Holland, when WW II broke out. She spent the war years in the Nazi-occupied town, attending a local public school and receiving ballet training at the Arhem Conservatory. After the war she went to London on a ballet scholarship. Graceful, slender, and long-legged, she soon began winning modeling assignments from fashion photographers. In the early 50s she joined Felix Aylmer's acting classes and began playing bit parts in British movies. While filming Monte Carlo Baby on the French Riviera, in 1951, she met Colette, the French novelist, who insisted that Audrey play the lead in the forthcoming Broadway adaptation of her Gigi.

Fragile and radiant, projecting both childlike and feminine qualities, Miss Hepburn was an ideal Colette heroine. Her success in the play led to a starring part opposite Gregory Peck in the film Roman Holiday, for which she won an Academy Award (she would later be nominated for Oscars four more times, for Sabrina,The Nun's Story, Breakfast at Tiffany's and & Wait Until Dark. Six weeks after the Oscar ceremonies she won the Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway play Ondine. Later in 1954 she married Mel Ferrer, her co-star in the play. They also co-starred in King Vidor's War and Peace, she as Natasha and he as Andrei. Ferrrer later directed her in Green Mansions; and produced her last picture of the 60's Wait until Dark; for which she received her fifth Oscar nomination, for her portrayal of a terrorized blind woman. But Ferrer had no part in the real highlights of her career, notably Funny Face, Love in the Afternoon,The Nun's Story, Breakfast at Tiffany's,Charade and My Fair Lady. They divorced in 1968. The following year she married an Italian psychiatrist nine years her junior and made her home in Rome and later in Switzerland. She was name a Special Ambassador for UNICEF and devoted much of her free time to charity. She returned to the screen in 1976 after a nine -year absence as a luminous 'Maid Marian' in Robin and Marian, but her subsequent film appearances were few and far between. Shortly after a highly publicized 1992 mission of mercy to famine and war-torn Somalia, she died of colon cancer and the early age of 63. She was mourned internationally as the loss of one of the favorite film actresses of all time, an icon to style, elegance, dignity, and charity.

Audrey Hepburn's farewell letter to her sons were from her favorite poem, she wrote Remember, if ever you need a helping hand, it's at the end of your arm. As you get older, remember you have another hand: the first to help yourself, and second to help others.

Day 19/365 - The Ties that Bind (and Choke and Gag)

Day 19/365 - The Ties that Bind (and Choke and Gag)

The photo is a close-up of my necktie du jour. Every work day I stuff a tie in my bag that matches what I'm wearing and then when I get to the office I drape it over some reference books at the side of my desk to keep it from getting wrinkled. I only bother to actually put it on if I have a meeting to go to, otherwise the tie just lays there until it's time to go home, at which point I stuff it back in my bag.

I hate wearing a tie. Given that fact, I might have been better off choosing a profession that generally didn't require me to wear one. I'm half-convinced that one of my ancestors was hanged at some point and that my aversion to having things tight up around my neck is the hereditary remnant of his sorry end.

When I started work I wore a suit everyday, but then after the first year I realized that was a bit pointless because the first thing I'd do when I got to my office was take my jacket off and hang it up. So then I ditched my suits and just started wearing slacks, shirt, and tie to work. After about 5-6 years of that, I began to question why I bothered with the tie given that I spend most of the day in my office and generally don't see anyone except for other lawyers, none of whom care whether I'm wearing a tie.

That's when I switched to carrying rather than wearing the tie and only putting it on for meetings. And now it's even gotten to the point that I don't wear it to every meeting. Only certain meetings merit the tie. Meeting with regular clients on routine matters = not tie-worthy. Typically I only put on a tie now if the meeting involves people from outside the Agency or if there are going to be fairly high-ranking people in attendance.

Guess you can tell I've never really cared for dressing up. When I was in the Navy the sailors on my ship were only permitted to go ashore if we were wearing collared shirts. Don't ask why, it was some BS argument about upholding the reputation of the command. Whatever. After dealing with that frustration for a while, I finally hit upon the idea of buying a white golf shirt and cutting the collar off it. Then when I wanted to go ashore, I would just tuck the collar under my t-shirt or sweatshirt so that technically I was wearing a collared shirt. Once I was off the ship, I would take the collar off and jam it in my pocket and go on my merry way.

Worked like a charm. When I left the Navy I gave my shirt collar to another guy in my division so he could carry on my legacy of obeying the letter of the rule while simultaneously thumbing his nose at the spirit of it. You know, on second thought maybe I was destined to be a lawyer after all, my distaste for neckties notwithstanding.

New York Magazine (Art) - See Here Now

New York Magazine (Art) - See Here Now

SOURCE: New York Magazine
TITLE: See Here Now
Three art-rich neighborhoods, 25 new galleries.
DATE: Oct 4, 2009
AUTHOR: Rachel Wolff
MAP BY: Jason Lee

Every gallery here has opened since the start of 2008, and all are exhibiting art that’s startling, affecting, or just plain fun. Since most (though not all) of them show emerging artists, the barriers to buying—financial and otherwise—are low. If you like what you see, you just may be able to take it home.

Downtown

Jonathan VanDyke at Scaramouche.
(Photo: Courtesy of Scaramouche, NY)
1. Scaramouche
53 Stanton St.; 212-228-2229
Stand back! This little gallery’s first fall opens with Jonathan VanDyke’s minimalist sculptures rigged to spurt out brightly colored paint (through November 1).

2. *Sue Scott
1 Rivington St., second fl. 212-358-8767
Scott’s sizable space, known for group shows and curatorial projects, is presenting an installation by Franklin Evans, who has transformed the gallery into a weird riff on his own studio (through October 24).

*= Jerry Saltz Recommends
3. Nicelle Beauchene
163 Eldridge St. 212-375-8043
Beauchene—who represents a nice mix of emerging and emerged artists—is showing Brooklynite Rachel Foullon’s wall-mounted sculptures of cedar and stained fabric, evoking the textures and details of life in rural America.

4. *Rachel Uffner
47 Orchard St.; 212-274-0064
Uffner’s September opening for Sara Greenberger Rafferty—who’s showing her murky manipulated portraits of seventies comedians through October 25—was packed to the rafters. A definite up-and-comer.

Saltz's Fall Gallery Tour
5. *Lisa Cooley Fine Art
34 Orchard St. 212-680-0564
Cooley represents a small crop of eclectic (and critically well-received) artists, and with the exception of a Texan and one West Coaster, all are local. Up now: a two-man show by painters Jon Pestoni and Zak Prekop (through October 18).

6. Collette Blanchard
26 Clinton St.; 917-639-3912
Blanchard made a splash last October with “Belle du Jour” (images of the female figure as imagined by E. V. Day, Mickalene Thomas, Shinique Smith, and others). Feminism is on the roster this fall, too, with Nancy Friedemann’s unexpectedly dramatic enamel paintings of lace and embroidery—a confluence of traditionally male and female media (through October 26).

7. Satori
164 Stanton St.; 646-896-1075
Like Blanchard, Satori is farther east than most local spaces, and both are worth the trek. This month, see one of the area’s few sculpture shows: Benjamin S. Jones’s wooden models inspired by not-so-stable urban architecture and planning (through October 18).

Lilla LoCurto at Sloan Fine Art.
(Photo: Courtesy of the artist and Sloan Fine Art Gallery)
8. Sloan Fine Art
128 Rivington St. 212-477-1140
Alix Sloan worked as a private art dealer in Los Angeles before opening here in 2008. In November, look for a series of anthropomorphic digital animations and prints by Lilla LoCurto and Bill Outcault, which look like high-tech medical illustrations run amok.

9. *X Initiative
548 W. 22nd St.; 917-697-4886
A one-year project in the old Dia space, this is a not-for-profit spearheaded by dealer Elizabeth Dee. Phase two of its three-part season is on view through the end of this month. In addition to seeing the three artists within the building, don’t miss the roof installation made of swimming-pool noodles.

10. *Horton & Liu
504 W. 22nd St.; 212-243-2663
This gallery specializes in painting and is located on the parlor floor of a Chelsea brownstone, giving it the pre-white-cube vibe of an earlier age. It debuted in September with a show of brightly colored, densely structured, faintly Cubist paintings by Michael Berryhill (through October 10).

11. *David Zwirner
524 W. 19th St.; 212-517-8677
Mega-dealer David Zwirner—who’s showing Chris Ofili and Raoul De Keyser across the street through October 24—will open his fourth Chelsea storefront early next year, expanding his retail space to an immense 40,000 square feet. The new building, a.k.a. Shigeru Ban’s Metal Shutter Houses, is almost an exhibit itself.

Joe Fig at Hendershot Gallery.
(Photo: Courtesy of the artist and Hendershot Gallery)
12. Hendershot Gallery
547 W. 27th St., Ste. 632 212-239-3085
James Hendershot represents commercial as well as fine-arts photographers, giving him a cash buffer in tricky times. He also reps a wide range of up-and-comers like Joe Fig, whose witty paintings and sculptures of artists’ studios—reproducing in micro-detail the worktable of, say, Ross Bleckner or Chuck Close—go on view October 15.

13. Slag
531 W. 25th St.; 212-967-9818
A passion project from Romanian-born collector Irina Protopopescu, Slag (named, symbolically, for the unwanted but recyclable by-product of ore smelting) opened last summer to showcase Eastern European artists. Right now, she’s hosting Romanian artist Mircea Suciu, whose bleak paintings look like fifties ads stripped of all their chipper optimism.

"Act in the Living Present - The Life of Martin Robison Delany" - by Jim Surkamp

MRD.vid1.1
MD: “I leave you here and journey on and if I never more return, farewell”
NARRATOR: Martin Delany finally gave up on America.

MRD.vid1.2
His expulsion with two others from Harvard Medical School just because of skin color convinced him that the power of reason and merit alone did not in fact determine the country’s esteemed leaders. So, scraping just a few hundred dollars,

MRD.vid1.3
he rented a crew and ship back to Africa, where his grandfather Shango had returned several generations before.

MRD.vid1.4 SHIP

MRD.vid1.5
His critics including Frederick Douglass, were legion. "You must stay here and fight for freedom," they told him.

MRD.vid1.6
He certainly reflected on his already long life:

MRD.vid1.7
the long road as one of five children in a freed family in Charles Town Virginia;

MRD.vid1.8
and after that fleeing because they illegally learned how to read, followed by the many years as a physician’s assistant in Pittsburgh,

MRD.vid1.9
and then editing two influential newspapers.

MRD.vid1.10
Most of all he remembered as he perhaps gazed at the sperm whales that
wandered into those southern latitudes . . . Of the day he was walking

MRD.vid1.11
the road to Pittsburgh in 1829 deciding - his head filled with
books and images of pharoahs and Africa - of making this pilgrimage in reverse back to Africa.

MRD.vid1.12
“Land Ho!"

MRD.vid1.13
NARRATOR: “The arrival of Martin Robison Delany in Liberia is an era in the history of African emigration, an event doubtless that will long be remembered by hundreds of thousands of Africa’s exiled children.

MRD.vid1.14
Persons from all parts of the country came to Monrovia to see this great man.”

People cheering:

MRD.vid1.17
MRD.vid1.18

MRD.vid1.19
Ridiculed and ignored in America for speaking -

MRD.vid1.20
embraced by the thousands here for speaking - how strange.

MRD.vid1.21
MD: “The regeneration of the African race can only be effected by its own efforts, the efforts of its own self and whatever aid may come from other sources; and it must, in this venture succeed, as God leads the movement and His hand guides the way.”

MRD.vid1.22
“Face thine accusers, scorn the rack and rod and, if thou hast truth to utter,

MRD.vid1.23
speak and leave the rest to God."

MRD.vid1.24
But we pushed on to Abeokuta.

MRD.vid1.25
Africa taught Martin Delany its mysteries.
MD: “The principle markets to see all the wonders

MRD.vid1.26
is in the evening. As the shades of evening deepen,

MRD.vid1.27
every woman lights her little lamp and, to the distant

MRD.vid1.28
observer, presents the beautiful appearance of innumerable stars.”

MRD.vid1.29
“But in the entire Aku country one is struck by the beautiful country which continually spreads out in every direction.”

MRD.vid1.30
Africa also taught him its nightmares. . .
I read August 13th in the West African Herald:

MRD.vid1.31
“King Dahomey is about to make the great Custom in honor of the late King Gezo.

MRD.vid1.32
Determined to surpass all former monarchs, a great pit has been dug which is to

MRD.vid1.33
contain human blood enough to float a canoe. Two thousand persons will be sacrificed on this occasion.

MRD.vid1.34
The king has sent his army to make some excursions at the expense of some weaker tribes. The younger people will be sold into slavery. The older persons will be killed At the Grand Custom.”

MRD.vid1.35
MD: “Whole villages are taken.”

“Farewell, farewell my loving friends, farewell. . .”

MRD.vid1.36
The jasmine smells of Africa are tonight less fragrant than my scented memory of soft honey-suckled summer’s night breezes in Virginia long ago, and awaking to the mockingbird.

{MRD.5:37} END PART 1 TO BLACK

MRD.vid1.37
MRD.vid1.38
NARRATOR: On April 10th, 1860 at Lagos, Martin Delany and Robert Campbell

MRD.vid1.41
They would undersell, at the gold price of fourteen cents a pound, all the slave wrought cotton from the plantations back home.

MRD.vid1.42

MRD.vid1.7
the long road as one of five children in a freed family in Charles Town Virginia;

MRD.vid1.8
and after that fleeing because they illegally learned how to read, followed by the many years as a physician’s assistant in Pittsburgh,

MRD.vid1.9
and then editing two influential newspapers.

MRD.vid1.16
MRD.vid1.17
MRD.vid1.18

First Christian Church

First Christian Church

Often called one of Tulsa's top tourist attractions - Tulsa architect John Brooks Walton considers the dome a "must-see" artwork - the sanctuary actually represents the third home for Tulsa's original Disciples of Christ congregation. Started in 1902 by the newly arrived Marshall family from Missouri, the flock first gathered at their farm around what is now Fourth Street and Denver Avenue. In 1903 they built their first sanctuary, a simple cottage with a bell tower steeple.

"All the other churches held early services so that they could come and participate in the new church," Gray said, sharing a tale of the founding. As was tradition at the time, the first offering was intended to pay off the note on the building.

"They passed the plates twice without getting enough money," said Gray, retelling the story, "so then they closed the doors and passed the plates again, and on the third try they made it."

Although that Second and Boulder facility could hold about 250, Gray said the congregation soon outgrew it and built a 1910 structure twice its size at Fourth and Boulder, featuring a large dome in its center. But as World War I started, that building also proved inadequate for the expanding church, spurring plans for today's landmark.

Completed in 1920 from designs by architects Van Slyke and Woodruff of Fort Worth, at an estimated cost of $250,000, the 1,200- seat sanctuary's ornate plaster interior featured a multitude of stained-glass fixtures around the walls and doors, all linked to the classic dome by several uniform shades of brown and green, repeated images of Easter lilies, cherub wings and the cross of Christ.

Sitting 45 feet off the floor, that dome not only helped light the room, but drove a ventilation system that used shafts under the solid concrete foundation and support structure to cool and recycle the atmosphere. The centerpiece of the dome, which by itself rose six feet, could be elevated another three feet to help hot air escape. Gray said second-floor windows around the balcony also had removable pieces that could be replaced by louvers and fans to create breezes.

"In those days before air conditioning, that could lower temperatures in the sanctuary by 10 to 15 degrees," said Gray.

Many elements of that structure changed over the years. Leaking problems forced the church to seal in the giant dome during the 1930s, lighting the stained glass with electric lamps. That lasted until 2001, when Gray oversaw a skylight restoration by Nosak Roofing.

Continued growth led First Christian to add an education building, Memorial Chapel, and then an annex that connected the sanctuary to the rest of the structures. Gray estimates the four buildings total about 50,000 square feet.

In 1966 the church finished a sanctuary renovation that extended the stage, installed a new Wicks organ with more than 4,000 pipes, took out the choir loft and replaced several plaster features with walnut paneling. Gray said many of those steps came at the expense of seating, which was reduced to about 900. He said 35 stained- glass treasures also were removed, which church members still intend to replace when possible.

"It's a long-term project," said Gray, one that comes with high overhead. Just replacing one of the lost front-door pieces could cost up to $6,000. "We always have to balance whether that money would be better spent on stained glass or on ministry. And of course, there's an obvious conclusion."

About once a month, Kevin Gray takes tour groups through downtown Tulsa's First Christian Church.

They're drawn by the four green domes atop walls of cut Indiana limestone, a classical Greek structure graced with a Corinthian entrance. But what really moves visitors is the large bowl of stained glass lining the interior of the centerpiece dome. Lit by natural light, Gray said the skylight provides awe-inspiring shifts of illumination through the arched chamber.

"It's just fascinating to sit in here when there are clouds and watch the sunlight shift across this room," said Gray, archivist for the church. "For insurance purposes, that dome is valued at $1 million."

Shopping's a bit shit really isn't it.

I mean, come on, as national pastimes go, it's not much to boast about.

Ah forget it. It's not like I actually care or anything.

That's me being a prize twat in Habitat anyway.

And if I can go my whole life without ever having to dress up like Lovejoy again, I will be quite pleased with myself.

Post-it note script: As of Two thousand and credit crunch Nine, there is no Habitat in Leicester that you can go to and stick light fittings on your head in. Dressed as Lovejoy or not.

Somehow or other, this seems like a bit of a shame.

Not perhaps THE most devastating repercussion of rapacious capitalism allowed to run batshit mental wild, I'll readily grant you, but, a bit of a shame nonetheless.

Anyway, I wanted to give this image a bit of a dreamy/surreal feel to it, so I have experimented with a bit with Orton stylee processing, new for me....your thoughts please, good OR bad......I can take it :o)

When buying this house I inherited the most hideous window treatments from the previous owners. This bathroom window was the last to be replaced. I gladly threw out the dingy old curtains and replaced them with these new cellular blinds.
