Inside looking out This theme of looking through bamboo screens has always apealed to me theres a Japanese Ukiyo ( Floating World ) quality to the above . The Ukiyo was a popular style in the Edo period 1600 - 1867 in Japanese art . This looking inside in this case a massage pavilion and through the bamboo blinds to the blue pool and pavilion structures beyond at the same time I find wonderful . Kuta Beach . Bali . Marcel's Eden Jack brought us to stay in this wonderful beach home for a few days. The second floor had NO walls... notice the bamboo blinds that act as walls and roll up to reveal the Garden of Eden out back (Bless you Jack!)... Fawkham S6K Manufacturer: Fawkam KitCars Nationality: Great Britain First assembled: March 8, 2189 Birthplace: Fawkham, England Engine: 3.0 L V6 HP: 330 BHP 0-60:6.2 seconds Top speed: 187.36 MPH Fawkham was a small kit car and car parts company stationed in the town of their namesake. They where mostly known for building cheap sporting kit cars, made for the enthusiast on a budget. One of their most known creations (and possibly one of the worst) is the first generation S6K. The S6K was made from fiberglass and aluminium, and an engine sold separately. The only engine compatible with the S6K was a V6, made by another British parts manufacturer called Silverstone. Both the engine, and the car itself, where unreliable. The S6K did have some unique features, however. It's party piece was that it used a vehicle canopy instead of conventional doors. Despite this. the S6K was still plagued with negative reviews, aimed at it's rather bad looks and poor reliability. Subsequent to the completion of STUDIO SECTION 2002-2005, Marsyas/Myself, the artist created another studio section, STUDIO SECTION 2005-2007, The Seven Deadly Sins and Three Diptychs from The Winter Notebooks. On Pages 7 and 8 of The Winter Notebooks he reprised MARSYAS/MYSELF in retrospect visual and verbal consideration and wrote the following excerpt about it: "Marsyas/Myself was completed in 2005 and entered into the permanent collection of the Crocker Art Museum in November of that same year. My three year involvement with this studio section was epiphanic and liberating, the separation nearly complete. However, the song of the artist, the skin of Marsyas, hangs heavy and will not be silenced. It lingers still, as Myself lingers still, and will not be silenced. As long as artists create artifacts and as long as viewers persist in creating Art from these artifacts, the myth of Marsyas is the truth of the artist; his life, his pain, his ecstasy, and his fate. By subjection of myself as a particular artist in equation with the corpus of Marsyas, an attempt was made to recast the drama of art into an anti-fascisttic and non-authoritarian process; a complete reassignment of roles wherein the viewer becomes the sole creator of Art and all else is cultural rhetoric. It was also an attempt by this artist at total honesty. As we know virtually nothing about Marsyas, it was my intention to reveal everything about Myself even to the extent of confessional boredom. All information has been made available to the viewer. Setting the plight of Marsyas in his challenge of Apollo within the context of a contemporary sculptor’s studio establishes the parallel of the cautionary myth with all artists who would gamble their lives on a rigged contest. There is no drama greater than the artist’s struggle with his own mortality. The transmutation of mortal desire into material artifact into immortal response is the distinguishing principal of humanity and it is the artist who personifies this principal in its sublime purity. No challenge is greater, no reality more intense. Marsyas is the artist’s myth and it is to this myth all artists conform…." It consists of free-standing sculptures, and large panels hanging on the walls and a combination of these and evenly divided into two metaphorical dimensions: "Marsyas" and "Myself." Bombed by NATO on 3rd, 26th and 29th May, 1999. I'd seen a photograph of this building, and received instructions of where is was - Mišeluk - and how to get there. Something along the lines of 'leave the bus station, keep walking, walk more, cross the Danube (don't fall in), go through the road-tunnel (don't get run over), take the slip-road on the right, follow it around the hill....' and there it was in the distance. The NATO strikes on Novi Sad from the end of March to early July were prolific. Electrical installations, military objects, water supplies, refineries. A suburban, residential areas. After crossing a few more eerily quiet over and under-passes to get there I arrive at the gate house. I'd been instructed to locate the guard to seek permission to enter. Three dogs where in the kennel at the ramshackle gate house building. A few bits of timber and what looked like a television set fake balustrade made up the gate itself. The dogs were as curious as I was wary. I didn't anticipate Serbian dogs being any less aggressive than Moldovan ones, so I proceeded toward the gate house with caution. It looked empty and the dogs were sizing me up. No growls yet, but I did begin to notice that of the three dogs one was lame, the other blind and the third seemed somewhat dazed. Not wanting to cross the line at which their territory begins I shouted 'zdravo' (hello) to see if the guard was around. Nothing. More 'zdravo', more volume. After five minutes or so an old-ish man came out and on sight of my camera he happily let me in. He could see I was wary of the dogs, but he dismissed them and laughed. Only The Trying “For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business.” ~ T.S. Eliot Many have asked how I am managing to capture snowflakes and while I would love to tell you it takes great skillful skill and great speedy speed:) there really is no other magic to it than patience, luck, and a little bit of know how. This shot is good, and I managed to grab some of the detail but it could have been better. I think there are some things that might help, like a tiny little paint brush to help gently brush away snow that insistently falls on top of your perfect snowflakes JUST AS YOU SHOOT them -AHHHH! lol:) *Note to self...buy small paintbrush for just such a purpose. I plan to keep trying, as the weather allows. Here are some things I think are very important, for any of you who want to give it a try. Those of you in the Northeast seem to be getting plenty of opportunity for it.:) 1. The temperature and wind conditions. It has to be cold enough and still enough that when the snowflakes are falling, they don't instantly melt or blow away. You need them to stick around for a few seconds. A good way to test this, is to just go outside and see if they are sticking to your clothes. There are things you can do to block the wind, but I haven't done that yet. I will be learning about this in a macro class this spring and I'll tell you about it then. Wind will absolutely make it impossible. In fact, even a slight breeze will make it a more frustrating experience than you'd probably like to have. 2. It helps if you have something colorful or textured for them to fall on. In my last two shots, I actually used my fading flowers. I left them out on the deck for a short time to get cold. 3. Good glass. You will have a very hard time capturing snowflakes without a very good lens. I use two...Canon's 100mm macro lens, which is probably one of the best lenses in my bag, and an old FD 50mm lens in reverse. If you have no idea what the Reverse Lens Method is, check out the description in my macro set and read the article I wrote on the subject for The Magic In Pixels. (There's a link in the set description.) It'll open your eyes to a whole new world. 4. Always use Live View on your camera and a remote shutter or cable release, or at least a 2 second delay. If you don't know how, drag out the manual and read about it. My camera allows me to zoom up 10 times so I am able to focus by watching until it clears up on Live View. This is how I do most of my work that has a really tight dof. Keep your ISO to 100 or 200 so the detail will be good and use a tripod if you can. I've gotten some handheld shots, but it's extremely difficult to do. 5. Crop your image in post. If you did well on #4, you should be able to crop to a very small area to feature just the snowflake. This is why good glass and a low ISO are so important. Otherwise, you'll end up with a very noisy, grainy image that will be disappointing. 6. Don't give up. It'll try your patience, but the result is pretty cool.:) *I created a snowflake set today, if you'd like to see all of the ones I've captured so far.:) What Is The World Coming To ? November 2nd, 2009 - New York, United States Ruskin famously complained that the new craze for photography - he was writing in the 19th century - meant that no-one really looked at anything any more : they simply pointed their cameras at whatever was before them. He believed that everyone should learn to draw and that tourists should sketch what they saw instead of photographing it - because to draw something, one is required truly to observe it, to look beyond the superficial. These days, people don't even seem to want to take the time to look properly at works of art in galleries or museums. They race through, presumably so they can say they've "done" MoMA or The Louvre, in the same way they've "done" New York or France, simply by virtue of having set foot there, waved their cameras around and clicked the shutter a few times. I swear, it's the new form of cultural tourism : you go to a gallery, and instead of looking at the works of art, you simply photograph all the descriptions. I can just imagine the conversations around the world, as these intrepid travelers, returned home, proudly recount their adventures to their friends and families : "Yeah, and then we went to this museum where we saw this really great painting of a flag." "My, that sounds fascinating. And which flag was it supposed to be ?" "Oh, it was that famous one. You know - from that really big country. The one next to Canada. You know the one. It's on the tip of my tongue. Wait, I think I have a photograph of the details here..." The old couple, in their 70s / 80s, was seen selling (and installing) venetian blinds well before the present building on the adjacent lot was built. In early 70s, the couple was facing a hard time when the former building this stall adhered to was being re-developed, hoarding erection along the lot boundary line of this service lane forced the business to continue in an awkward position. The son of this couple was rather discontented with his parent's small business, leaving the couple to carrying on this trade on their own. May be for another 10 years.... Woven curtains, venetian blinds of all types and even old fashioned blinds with 2 inches wide slats are always available.
